Re-Thinking The Nature Of Bodies., Rachel Robinson-Greene May 2021

Re-Thinking The Nature Of Bodies., Rachel Robinson-Greene

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Human beings are constantly growing and shedding cells. This means that very few of the cells that any person has as an adult were the cells that they had as an infant. Over the years, as we’ve learned more about cell growth and death, we’ve learned that our bodies aren’t fixed objects that simply change shape over time. Bodies are ever-shifting collections of physical stuff. To co-opt a phrase from Heraclitus, no one occupies the same body twice.

Aconitum Lycoctonum L.: Phenolic Compounds And Their Bioactivities, Erna Karalija, Adisa Paric, Sabina Dahija, Renata Besta Gajevic, Sanja Cavar Zeljkovic

Poisonous Plant Research (PPR)

The very first report on the phenolic composition of aerial parts of Aconitum lycoctonum L., a species belonging to the toxic Aconitum genus, is presented here. Aerial parts were subjected to the extraction with four different solvents and analyzed via LC-MS/MS for the content of phenolic acids and flavonoids. Furthermore, isolated extracts were tested for antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Ethanolic extracts of both flowers and vegetative parts (leaves and stems) were found to be the richest in the phenolic compounds, following the water extracts. Ethanolic extract of flowers was very rich in flavonoid apigenin, while high levels of salicylic and …

Drought-Tolerant Options For Southwest Agriculture: Edible Produce, Emily Rice, Kynda R. Curtis

All Current Publications

The arid Southwest has been heavily impacted by drought and climate change. The Southwest states are some of the driest in the nation. From 2000 to 2020, 65% of the state of Utah experienced abnormally dry conditions, 78% of Arizona, 69% of New Mexico, and 71% of Nevada. Drought can damage pastures and crops, leading to economic losses in agriculture. Sustaining agricultural production (crops, food, livestock) on tribal lands will become progressively more challenging in the future due to decreased water availability, extended droughts, and changes in precipitation quantities and timing. This fact sheet is the second in a series …

Episodic Occurrence Of Favourable Weather Constrains Recovery Of A Cold Desert Shrubland After Fire, Alexandra K. Urza, Peter J. Weisberg, David Board, Jeanne C. Chambers, Stanley G. Kitchen, Bruce A. Roundy

Articles

  1. Key to the long-term resilience of dryland ecosystems is the recovery of foundation plant species following disturbance. In ecosystems with high interannual weather variability, understanding the influence of short-term environmental conditions on establishment of foundation species is essential for identifying vulnerable landscapes and developing restoration strategies. We asked how annual environmental conditions affect post-fire establishment of Artemisia tridentata, a shrub species that dominates landscapes across much of the western United States, and evaluated the influence of episodic establishment on population recovery.
  2. We collected A. tridentata stem samples from 33 plots in 12 prescribed fire sites that burned 8–11 years …

Autonomous Optimal Trajectory Planning For Orbital Rendezvous, Satellite Inspection, And Final Approach Based On Convex Optimization, Nicholas Ortolano, David K. Geller, Aaron Avery May 2021

Autonomous Optimal Trajectory Planning For Orbital Rendezvous, Satellite Inspection, And Final Approach Based On Convex Optimization, Nicholas Ortolano, David K. Geller, Aaron Avery

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

Convex optimization techniques have deterministic convergence properties, are self-starting, i.e., they do not require an initial guess, and have been tested in real-time environments. These optimization techniques are applied to the trajectory planning problem for orbital rendezvous and proximity operations. Spacecraft rendezvous, inspection, and final approach trajectories are considered. Optional trajectory constraints are considered, including approach corridors, keep-out zones, and maximum thrust acceleration levels. Two linear dynamics models are investigated: Clohessy-Wiltshire dynamics to describe the relative motion in a local-horizontal local-vertical frame, and a new relative orbital motion dynamics model to describe the motion relative to a spinning or uncontrolled …

Splitting The Difference: Heterogeneous Soil Moisture Availability Affects Aboveground And Belowground Reserve And Mass Allocation In Trembling Aspen, Ashley T. Hart, Morgane Merlin, Erin Wiley, Simon M. Landhäusser May 2021

Splitting The Difference: Heterogeneous Soil Moisture Availability Affects Aboveground And Belowground Reserve And Mass Allocation In Trembling Aspen, Ashley T. Hart, Morgane Merlin, Erin Wiley, Simon M. Landhäusser

Aspen Bibliography

When exploring the impact of resource availability on perennial plants, artificial treatments often apply conditions homogeneously across space and time, even though this rarely reflects conditions in natural systems. To investigate the effects of spatially heterogeneous soil moisture on morphological and physiological responses, trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) saplings were used in a split-pot experiment. Following the division of the root systems, saplings were established for a full year and then subjected to either heterogeneous (portion of the root system exposed to non-lethal drought) or homogeneous (whole root system exposed to non-lethal drought or well-watered) treatments. Above- and belowground …

(Re-)Defining Permaculture: Perspectives Of Permaculture Teachers And Practitioners Across The United States, Kaitlyn Spangler, Roslynn Brain Mccann, Rafter Sass Ferguson

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

The solutions-based design framework of permaculture exhibits transformative potential, working to holistically integrate natural and human systems toward a more just society. The term can be defined and applied in a breadth of ways, contributing to both strengths and weaknesses for its capacity toward change. To explore the tension of breadth as strength and weakness, we interviewed 25 prominent permaculture teachers and practitioners across the United States (US) regarding how they define permaculture as a concept and perceive the term’s utility. We find that permaculture casts a wide net that participants grapple with in their own work. They engaged in …

Maple trees (Acer sp.) are a common fixture and beautiful addition to Utah landscapes. There are over one hundred species, each with numerous cultivars (cultivated varieties) that are native to both North America and much of Northern Europe. Trees vary in size and shape, from small, almost prostrate forms like certain Japanese maples (Acer palmatum) and shrubby bigtooth maples (Acer grandidentatum) to large and stately shade trees like the Norway maple (Acer platanoides). Tree shape can vary greatly, ranging from upright, columnar, rounded, pyramidal to spreading. Because trees come in a range …

Electron Yield Decay Curves For Analysis Of Sample Charging And Neutralization, Matthew Robertson May 2021

Electron Yield Decay Curves For Analysis Of Sample Charging And Neutralization, Matthew Robertson

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Excess charge on a material will affect the electron yield of the material. Electron yield is an attribute of materials which describe how the material behaves when irradiated with electrons. It is the ratio of the number of electrons going into the material over the number of electrons leaving the material. Understanding how a sample charges is important in both how it affects the electron yield and how it can be neutralized.

Evolution Of A Digital Twin For Wing Assembly By Refill Friction Stir Spot Welding, Johnathon Hunt May 2021

Evolution Of A Digital Twin For Wing Assembly By Refill Friction Stir Spot Welding, Johnathon Hunt

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Refill Friction Stir Spot Welding (RFSSW) is an emerging solid state joining process for thin sheet aluminum. Many researchers are developing RFSSW process parameters and best practices for manufacturing, thus enabling the use of RFSSW in many industries. Within this development, this work focuses to predict the resultant residual stresses and distortion in a joined part after welding. These residual stresses are caused by the heat & mechanical inputs from the RFSSW process. This report provides the preliminary results of the two step solution to resultant temperature and stresses from a series of RFSSW in thin sheet aluminum.

Reliable Mode Tracking In Gradient-Based Optimization Frameworks With Flutter Constraints, Taylor Mcdonnell May 2021

Reliable Mode Tracking In Gradient-Based Optimization Frameworks With Flutter Constraints, Taylor Mcdonnell

Utah Space Grant Consortium

In this paper a new mode tracking method is presented which incorporates backtracking logic to maintain a high degree of confidence in mode tracking results. The effectiveness of this mode tracking method is demonstrated on linear and nonlinear aeroelastic systems of varying complexity in the context of aeroelastic analyses and optimizations with stability constraints. The high degree of confidence in mode correlations provided by the new mode tracking method allows for the creation and use of mode-specific C1 continuous stability constraints in gradient-based optimization frameworks. Using our mode tracking method in the context of a gradient-based optimization framework with …

Sparse Monocular Scene Reconstruction Using Rolling Voxel Maps, Jacob Johnson May 2021

Sparse Monocular Scene Reconstruction Using Rolling Voxel Maps, Jacob Johnson

Utah Space Grant Consortium

We present a method for creating 3D obstacle maps in real-time using only a monocular camera and an inertial measurement unit (IMU). We track a large amount of sparse features in the image frame. Then, given scale-accurate pose estimates from a front-end visual-inertial odometry (VIO) algorithm, we estimate the inverse depth to each of the tracked features using a keyframe-based feature-only bundle adjustment. These features are then accumulated within a probabilistic robocentric 3D voxel map that rolls as the camera moves. This local rolling voxel map provides a simple scene representation within which obstacle avoidance planning can easily be done. …

Evaluation Of Liquid Doping Methods For Use In Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Taylor Davis May 2021

Evaluation Of Liquid Doping Methods For Use In Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Taylor Davis

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is an additive manufacturing (AM) process that is well known for its geometric versatility and high-quality parts. While the properties of LPBF parts are commonly superior to those made using other AM techniques, LPBF is generally limited to a single material in any given build. While LPBF can accommodate the integration of multiple components into a single part geometrically, the material limitation leads to over-designing to ensure that every component can complete their various functions. Some studies have shown potential methods of 3D composition control throughout a part, but these methods are subject to high …

Wake Expansion Continuation: Multi-Modality Reduction In The Wind Farm Layout Optimization Problem, Jared J. Thomas May 2021

Wake Expansion Continuation: Multi-Modality Reduction In The Wind Farm Layout Optimization Problem, Jared J. Thomas

Utah Space Grant Consortium

In this paper we present a continuation optimization method for reducing multi-modality in the wind farm layout optimization problem that we call Wake Expansion Continuation (WEC). We achieve the reduction in multi-modality by starting with an increased wake diameter while maintaining normal velocity deficits at the center of the wakes, and then reducing the wake diameter for each of a series of optimization runs until the accurate wake diameter is used. We applied and demonstrated the effectiveness of WEC with two different wake models. We tested WEC on four optimization case studies with a gradient-based optimization method and a gradient-free …

Passive Atmospheric Safety Feature For Small Molten Salt Reactors In Accident Conditions, Brent Edgerton May 2021

Tuning Radiation And Microgravity Exposure For Human Brain Organoids, Bailey Mcfarland May 2021

Tuning Radiation And Microgravity Exposure For Human Brain Organoids, Bailey Mcfarland

Utah Space Grant Consortium

The environment of space, specifically radiation and microgravity, poses a substantial threat to astronauts' brain health. Understanding the damage mechanism and therefore paving the way to finding potential remedies is critical to protect astronauts during space flight. Current models are insufficient at representing the human brain, and insufficient research has been conducted on the effect of radiation and microgravity on the higher structures of the human brain. This ongoing research aims to use brain organoids, a tissue-engineered model that recapitulates the human brain's anatomy and structure and investigate the effects of radiation and microgravity on the brain. At the current …

Identification Of Haloarchaea In Gypsum From Great Salt Lake, Zhantao Du May 2021

Identification Of Haloarchaea In Gypsum From Great Salt Lake, Zhantao Du

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) is a common precipitate at Great Salt Lake (GSL). On Earth, gypsum is formed in hypersaline environments, in minerals left behind when water evaporates. In the Autumn, as the water cools, mineral precipitation is favored since solubility is lowered. In this process, newly formed gypsum will trap microorganisms in fluid and clay inclusions. This study is to cultivate haloarchaea preserved in gypsum, and identify the species using PCR technique.

Characterization Of Halophyte Rhizosphere Microbiomes At Great Salt Lake, Utah, Haley K. Nate May 2021

Characterization Of Halophyte Rhizosphere Microbiomes At Great Salt Lake, Utah, Haley K. Nate

Utah Space Grant Consortium

The saline soils comprising the shoreline of Great Salt Lake, Utah (GSL) provide a unique habitat for both halophytes (salt-tolerant plants) and the microorganisms that inhabit their rhizosphere. While plant diversity has been well documented at GSL, little is known about the microbial diversity in the rhizosphere. Here we present preliminary data characterizing the halophyte rhizosphere microbiome at two GSL locations; the more saline North Arm near the artwork, Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty (SJ), and the less saline South Arm on Antelope Island (Al). The rhizosphere of several plants along the shoreline at both SJ and Al locations was sampled. …

Miniature Multi-Sensor Array (Mini-Msa) For Ground-To-Stratosphere Air Measurement, Phase Ii, Zachary Kennedy, Drew Huber, Huiling Renee Xie May 2021

Miniature Multi-Sensor Array (Mini-Msa) For Ground-To-Stratosphere Air Measurement, Phase Ii, Zachary Kennedy, Drew Huber, Huiling Renee Xie

Utah Space Grant Consortium

There are numerous college research groups doing high altitude ballooning and working with drones. Many of these are making air quality measurements. Those measurements are effectively random. We are designing an inexpensive and easy to build assembly that others can build for under $500 with the goal of having a uniform data set that can be compared. This will provide more useful data for atmospheric studies. Our first version had too many noise issues and the gas sensor signals were unstable. In December 2020 Winsen Sensors (China) came out with a “multi-in-one sensor module,” the ZPHS01B. At a price point …

Simulated And Phantom Detection Of Microscopic Targets By Raman Spectroscopy, Jordyn Hales May 2021

Simulated And Phantom Detection Of Microscopic Targets By Raman Spectroscopy, Jordyn Hales

Utah Space Grant Consortium

The goal of this study is to determine the minimum spatial sampling resolution required to accurately detect microscopic targets within a sample using Raman spectroscopy. The resolution depends on the light scattering properties of the material. We use Monte Carlo simulations to study how measurement geometry and optical properties of a sample affect the Raman signal detected from an embedded target. We confirm these results using polystyrene beads embedded in artificial tissue phantoms.

Comparing P-11b To D-3he Fusion For Direct Drive Fusion Rockets, Christopher Hooper May 2021

Comparing P-11b To D-3he Fusion For Direct Drive Fusion Rockets, Christopher Hooper

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Direct Fusion Drive (DFD) is a theoretical configuration that uses a magnetically confined fusing plasma to provide thrust for a rocket. In the words of the original authors, Princeton Satellite Systems (PSS) and Razinet al., it is “...a compact, anuetronic fusion engine [which] will enable more challenging exploration missions in the solar system.” DFD is proposed as a theoretical alternative to chemical and ion propulsion rockets – as seen in Table 1, it has clear advantages over both in exhaust velocity (specific impulse) and mass ratio, and a large advantage over ion propulsion in thrust and thrust-to-weight ratio. Despite being …

Mapping Relative Sand Abundance, Ice-Rich Regions, And Linear Dune Properties Of Titan, Ben Lake, Delaney Rose May 2021

Mapping Relative Sand Abundance, Ice-Rich Regions, And Linear Dune Properties Of Titan, Ben Lake, Delaney Rose

Utah Space Grant Consortium

The equatorial regions of Titan are dominated by linear dune fields made of complex organic particles [1, 2] and have many similarities to terrestrial dunes such as those found in the Namib Sand Sea [1, 3]. Previous studies of Titan’s sand seas included mapping sand sea margins [4, 5, 6, 7] and some dune tracing, but did not involve mapping relative sand abundances. Our work involves mapping relative sand abundances coupled with relative abundances of water ice, as well as more detailed mapping of linear dune morphology.
