A Profile Of Wild Pig Hunters In Texas, Usa, Rachael L. Connally, Maureen G. Frank, Gary E. Briers, Nova J. Silvy, Keith M. Carlisle, John M. Tomeček

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Wild pigs (Sus scrofa) are a widespread exotic, invasive species that poses ecological, agricultural, and human health risks in invaded areas. Wildlife managers often manage wild pig abundance and expansion to mitigate these risks. The diversity of stakeholders involved in the issue of wild pig management complicates efforts to manage the species, and, to be successful, wildlife professionals should consider the human dimensions associated with wild pig management. The prevalence of privately owned lands in Texas, USA necessitates cooperation to enact effective management policies. In this study, we investigate the factors that affect a hunter’s likelihood to participate …

Understanding The Effects Of Climate Change Via Disturbance On Pristine Arctic Lakes—Multitrophic Level Response And Recovery To A 12-Yr, Low-Level Fertilization Experiment, Phaedra Budy, Casey A. Pennock, Anne E. Giblin, Chris Luecke, Daniel L. White, George W. Kling

Watershed Sciences Student Research

Effects of climate change-driven disturbance on lake ecosystems can be subtle; indirect effects include increased nutrient loading that could impact ecosystem function. We designed a low-level fertilization experiment to mimic persistent, climate change-driven disturbances (deeper thaw, greater weathering, or thermokarst failure) delivering nutrients to arctic lakes. We measured responses of pelagic trophic levels over 12 yr in a fertilized deep lake with fish and a shallow fishless lake, compared to paired reference lakes, and monitored recovery for 6 yr. Relative to prefertilization in the deep lake, we observed a maximum pelagic response in chl a (+201%), dissolved oxygen (DO, −43%), …

Informational Signage Increases Awareness Of A Rattlesnake In A Canadian Urban Park System, Jonathan D. Choquette, Alexis V. Hand Aug 2021

Informational Signage Increases Awareness Of A Rattlesnake In A Canadian Urban Park System, Jonathan D. Choquette, Alexis V. Hand

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Human–snake conflict results in negative outcomes for people and snakes, and if left unmanaged, could undermine conservation efforts. One approach to managing conflict between people and snakes is to use signage to inform members of the public on the presence of venomous snakes and measures to prevent snakebites. To be an effective tool, however, signs must first be noticed, then read and understood by the target audience. As part of conservation efforts targeting eastern massasauga rattlesnakes (Sistrurus catenatus) in southwestern Ontario, Canada, we tested the effectiveness of signage at increasing awareness of its presence, status and threats, and …

Human–Wildlife Interactions

The Himalayan brown bear (Ursus arctos isabellinus) is an endangered subspecies of brown bear (U. a. spp.) and is found throughout the Himalayan region of south and central Asia. We describe the type of and the current level of human–bear conflict (HBC) with Himalayan brown bears in the Zanskar region of northern India and suggest potential mitigation methods. Between July and September 2018, we interviewed 218 households across the Zanskar region, all of whom had experienced HBC. Participants reported increasing numbers of HBC events in the last 4 years. The most common form of HBC was damage …

Cross-Boundary Weed Management In Protected Area-Centered Ecosystems: How Can It Work And What Makes It Harder To Achieve?, Natalie Otto, Mark W. Brunson Aug 2021

Cross-Boundary Weed Management In Protected Area-Centered Ecosystems: How Can It Work And What Makes It Harder To Achieve?, Natalie Otto, Mark W. Brunson

Environment and Society Student Research

Invasive species management in natural landscapes is generally executed at the scale of independent jurisdictions, yet the ecological processes and biodiversity to be protected from invasion occur over large spatial scales and across multiple jurisdictions. Jurisdictional land boundaries can influence the flows and dynamics of ecological systems, as well as the social systems that exist in these complex landscapes. Land management entities in large, protected area-centered ecosystems may use different approaches to address cross-boundary management challenges. To understand these differing strategies and their effects on cooperative invasive plant management, we interviewed employees with federal, county and state agencies, research organizations, …

Bioavailable Silicon: Release Rate From Additives & Substrates, Mackenzie G. Dey, Jennifer Boldt, Bruce Bugbee

Hydroponics/Soilless Media

Liquid fertilization is often used to supply silicon (Si) (Boldt & Altland, 2021), but Si is minimally soluble. Media components that provide a steady release of Si are valuable.

There are many options for Si media amendments, but Si release rate is not well characterized.

Our objective was to quantify Si release from media components to achieve a steady-state Si release as mono-silicic acid (H4SiO4) over time.

The Impact Of A Spill Or Pollution Accident On Firm Environmental Activity: An Empirical Investigation, Rick Hardcopf, Rachna Shah, Suvrat Dhanorkar

Management Faculty Publications

Spill and pollution (SP) accidents cause significant damage to the natural environment. They also result in financial costs and reputational losses for the offending firm. As such, understanding how firms respond to such crises is of significant interest to firm stakeholders, such as investors, customers, regulators, NGOs, employees, and local communities. In this study, we examine whether publicly disclosed SP accidents cause firms to alter their approach to environmental management, as expressed by the adoption of environmental management practices (EMPs). Using a unique panel data from 2002 to 2013, representing over 400 publicly-traded US manufacturing firms, we find that in …

Tremblings

Knowing the WAA Through Connection

Paul C. Rogers

The Western Aspen Alliance (WAA) was founded in 2008 with a three-year start-up fund from Utah State University’s Quinney Foundation. Envisioned as a partnership between USU and the U.S. Forest Service’s research branch, the organization quickly attracted multiple partners in the form of state and federal agencies. Thus, a virtual organization was born with the primary function of bringing current aspen science to field practitioners. A secondary mission, to support active aspen research, involved facilitating interdisciplinary teams to address key issues. This basic structure, with science outreach overseen by a Steering Committee …

Logbert: Log Anomaly Detection Via Bert, Haixuan Guo Aug 2021

Logbert: Log Anomaly Detection Via Bert, Haixuan Guo

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

When systems break down, administrators usually check the produced logs to diagnose the failures. Nowadays, systems grow larger and more complicated. It is labor-intensive to manually detect abnormal behaviors in logs. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an automated anomaly detection on system logs. Automated anomaly detection not only identifies malicious patterns promptly but also requires no prior domain knowledge. Many existing log anomaly detection approaches apply natural language models such as Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) to log analysis since both are based on sequential data. The proposed model, LogBERT, a BERT-based neural network, can capture the contextual information in …

When Healthy Turns Harmful: Increasing Understanding Of Potential Risk Factors And Approaches To Decreasing Orthorexic Behaviors, Elizabeth King Aug 2021

When Healthy Turns Harmful: Increasing Understanding Of Potential Risk Factors And Approaches To Decreasing Orthorexic Behaviors, Elizabeth King

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is a relatively new term used to describe individuals who place an excessive value on consuming a “pure” or healthful diet, so much so that their psychological, and potentially physical, health is negatively affected. ON is driven by a focus of consuming high-quality foods rather than limiting the quantity of food. This has sometimes been referred to as “clean eating”, or only consuming “clean” foods. A commonality between ON and other eating disorders (EDs) is that the behaviors are rooted in restriction, where an individual with ON would focus on restricting specific foods, or even entire food …

Iluqata: All Of Us, Cana Uluak Itchuaqiyaq Aug 2021

Iluqata: All Of Us, Cana Uluak Itchuaqiyaq

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The field of technical and professional communication (TPC) is solidly within the social justice turn that encourages TPC practitioners and scholars to consider how their work, if left unchecked, could perpetuate oppressive societal norms, such as racism. Increasing awareness of how technical communicators can combat oppression through coalitional action and through centering multiply marginalized and underrepresented (MMU) voices and experiences through inclusive research methodologies are important components towards equity in TPC. This dissertation presents five accepted publications that demonstrate how narrative methodologies and coalitional work function to enhance scholarly activism and work towards equity. These five publications are thoroughly introduced …

A Phenological Model For A Southern Population Of Mountain Pine Beetle, Catherine E. Wangen Aug 2021

A Phenological Model For A Southern Population Of Mountain Pine Beetle, Catherine E. Wangen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The mountain pine beetle (MPB, Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins) attacks living Pinus trees across a widespread area of western North America, causing significant ecological and economic damage. The ability to make accurate predictions of how MPB populations across this range will respond to temperatures, which affect MPB progress through life stages, is essential. Northern and southern populations of MPB are genetically different in response to temperature, requiring geographic-specific model parameters. There is not currently a predictive model for the southern MPB life cycle, despite concerns that those populations may be more susceptible to increased numbers of generations per year, which would …

Saudadades Da Minha Terra Amada: Brazilian Immigrants In Utah, Corinne Clarkson-Heaps Aug 2021

Saudadades Da Minha Terra Amada: Brazilian Immigrants In Utah, Corinne Clarkson-Heaps

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

“We are all strangers in a strange land, longing for home, but not quite knowing what or where home is,” author Madeleine L’engle once wrote (L’engle 1993). The Portuguese language has a word for this feeling - saudade. Saudade is hard to describe in English, but it is often described as a feeling of longing, or nostalgia that is supposedly characteristic of the Brazilian temperament. Brazilian immigrants are familiar with this feeling. Though generally grateful for new opportunities, they often describe the saudades that they have for their terra amada, or “beloved homeland,” after coming to America. Saudades …

Alternative Doppler Extraction For Indoor Communication Signals, Thomas L. Bradshaw Aug 2021

Alternative Doppler Extraction For Indoor Communication Signals, Thomas L. Bradshaw

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Radar is a common detection system for detecting the speed and velocity of moving objects. Radar is performed by transmitting a radio signal in the direction of a moving object and then processing the received reflected radio waves. The radar system processes the received signal to extract the Doppler frequency of the reflected waves, which reveals information about the velocity of the object. In traditional radar, the system uses one antenna for both the transmitter and the receiver.

In passive bistatic radar, the transmit antenna and receiver antenna are separated. In addition, the radar system has no control over the …

Fixed Pattern Noise Non-Uniformity Correction Through K-Means Clustering, Andres Imperial Aug 2021

Fixed Pattern Noise Non-Uniformity Correction Through K-Means Clustering, Andres Imperial

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Imagery obtained with poorly calibrated sensors is often corrupted with fixed pattern noise. Fixed pattern noise presents itself through a non-uniform distribution and therefore is hard to target in noise removal. Traditional noise removal techniques assume that the noise is uniformly distributed and subsequently produces inadequate corrections. Noise correction methods that target fixed pattern noise rely on dynamically identifying present noise and adjust correction values appropriately using nearby information or general assumptions about the image’s composition. If noise identification is not accurate, the correction values will also suffer from low accuracy. Inaccurate correction values can affect the imagery’s quality, and …

Climate change is one of the major issues humans face in the 21st century. This decade is critical in shaping the future of Earth and the way humans live on it (IPCC, 2018). Changes in human behavior are necessary to mitigate and adapt to climate change. This series of studies explored factors important in communicating and implementing environmental behavior. The first study tested the effects of an online, interactive carbon calculator with moral interventions on three self-reported measures and one objective measure of behavior over a period of weeks. The interventions resulted in small changes in self-reported behavior and …

Navigation Performance Of Line/Plane Intersection Lidar Model In Conjunction With Opportunistic Feature Tracker, Michael R. Hansen Aug 2021

Navigation Performance Of Line/Plane Intersection Lidar Model In Conjunction With Opportunistic Feature Tracker, Michael R. Hansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

With NASA awarding numerous contracts to build commercial lunar payload spacecraft and human lunar landers, the need for high precision navigation has increased. Traditional inertial navigation alone is not sufficient to autonomously land a vehicle on hazardous lunar terrain. Terrain relative navigation (TRN) systems have been explored in previous research that exploit camera observations of known landmarks. Such approaches require the flight electronics to correctly match features of the observed landmarks to an onboard database, in the drastically varying lighting conditions of moon. This paper explores the performance of a TRN system that does not rely on apriori landmark identification, …

Breast Ultrasound Image Segmentation Based On Uncertainty Reduction And Context Information, Kuan Huang Aug 2021

Breast Ultrasound Image Segmentation Based On Uncertainty Reduction And Context Information, Kuan Huang

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Breast cancer frequently occurs in women over the world. It was one of the most serious diseases and the second common cancer among women in 2019. The survival rate of stages 0 and 1 of breast cancer is closed to 100%. It is urgent to develop an approach that can detect breast cancer in the early stages. Breast ultrasound (BUS) imaging is low-cost, portable, and effective; therefore, it becomes the most crucial approach for breast cancer diagnosis. However, BUS images are of poor quality, low contrast, and uncertain. The computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system is developed for breast cancer to prevent …

Wildland Fire Risk Perceptions And Mitigation Actions In The Western United States: A Systematic Literature Review And Two Empirical Case Studies, Lauren Nicole-Dupéy Larsen Aug 2021

Wildland Fire Risk Perceptions And Mitigation Actions In The Western United States: A Systematic Literature Review And Two Empirical Case Studies, Lauren Nicole-Dupéy Larsen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Individuals are continuing to move into previously uninhabited, wildlands in the Western United States where fire danger is often high. This continued movement of people is a two-fold problem. First, individuals are moving into areas that have dense forestland and other flammable vegetation types where wildfires can easily ignite and spread. Second, individuals are starting more wildfires in these previously uninhabited areas (over 90% of wildfires across the country are caused by humans). Although wildfire is a complex topic, one thing is simple: As individuals continue to move into these wild, forested, and often mountainous areas, the risk of these …
