Growth–Defense Trade-Offs Shape Population Genetic Composition In An Iconic Forest Tree Species, Olivia L. Cope, Ken Keefover-Ring, Eric L. Kruger, Richard L. Lindroth Sep 2021

Growth–Defense Trade-Offs Shape Population Genetic Composition In An Iconic Forest Tree Species, Olivia L. Cope, Ken Keefover-Ring, Eric L. Kruger, Richard L. Lindroth

Aspen Bibliography

All organisms experience fundamental conflicts between divergent metabolic processes. In plants, a pivotal conflict occurs between allocation to growth, which accelerates resource acquisition, and to defense, which protects existing tissue against herbivory. Trade-offs between growth and defense traits are not universally observed, and a central prediction of plant evolutionary ecology is that context-dependence of these trade-offs contributes to the maintenance of intraspecific variation in defense [Züst and Agrawal, Annu. Rev. Plant Biol., 68, 513–534 (2017)]. This prediction has rarely been tested, however, and the evolutionary consequences of growth–defense trade-offs in different environments are poorly understood, especially in long-lived species …

Thermal Barrier Coating For Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Composite Materials, Heejin Kim, Jungwon Kim, Juhyeong Lee, Min Wook Lee

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites are widely employed in lightweight and high performance applications including supercars, aero-vehicles, and space components. However, although carbon fibers are thermally stable, the low thermal endurance of the matrix materials remains a critical problem in terms of the performance of the material. In this study, we proposed a new, Al2O3-based thermal barrier coating (TBC) for the CFRP composites. The TBC comprised α-phase Al2O3 particles with a mean diameter of 9.27 μm. The strong adhesion between the TBC and the CFRP substrate was evaluated using a three point bending …

Increasing Fiber Intake During Childhood And Adolescence, Madison Gunter, Stacy Bevan, Casey Coombs, Mateja R. Savoie-Roskos Sep 2021

Increasing Fiber Intake During Childhood And Adolescence, Madison Gunter, Stacy Bevan, Casey Coombs, Mateja R. Savoie-Roskos

All Current Publications

Fiber is an important part of a healthful diet that provides numerous benefits when adequately consumed. Yet, many individuals do not know what fiber is, let alone how to eat enough. Thus, it is no surprise that fiber has been a dietary concern among children and adolescents for over a decade, with less than 10% of youth meeting recommended fiber intakes (Finn et al., 2019; Kranz et al., 2012; McGill et al., 2015). In this fact sheet, we will discuss what fiber is, along with its health benefits, current recommendations, and strategies for incorporating fiber into your child’s diet.

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) is a commercially important timber species planted across a wide temperature gradient in the southeastern U.S. It is critical to ensure that the planting stock is suitably adapted to the growing environment to achieve high productivity and survival. Long-term field studies, although considered the most reliable method for assessing cold hardiness of loblolly pine, are extremely resource-intensive and time-consuming. The development of a high-throughput screening tool to characterize and classify freeze tolerance among different genetic entries of seedlings will facilitate accurate deployment of highly productive and well-adapted families across the landscape. This study presents a …

The Association Of Assault Military Sexual Trauma And Sexual Function Among Partnered Female Service Members And Veterans: The Mediating Roles Of Depression And Sexual Self-Schemas, Rebecca K. Blais, Whitney S. Livingston Sep 2021

The Association Of Assault Military Sexual Trauma And Sexual Function Among Partnered Female Service Members And Veterans: The Mediating Roles Of Depression And Sexual Self-Schemas, Rebecca K. Blais, Whitney S. Livingston

Psychology Faculty Publications

Background: Military sexual trauma (MST) that involves assault is associated with poorer sexual function in U. S. women service members/veterans (SM/Vs). Theory of sexual function suggests that the presence of higher depression severity and more negative sexual self-schemas may contribute to sexual dysfunction. This has yet to be examined in partnered women SM/Vs who are survivors of MST.

Objective: Using path analysis, the current study examined the associations of MST type, depression, sexual self-schemas, and sexual function in 818 partnered women SM/Vs.

Method: Three separate mediation models were tested, all testing indirect effects of depression and sexual self-schemas on the …

Surveying Teachers' Preferences And Boundaries Regarding Human-Ai Control In Dynamic Pairing Of Students For Collaborative Learning, Kexin Bella Yang, Luettamae Lawrence, Vanessa Echeverría, Boyuan Guo, Nikol Rummel, Vincent Aleven

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Orchestration tools may support K-12 teachers in facilitating student learning, especially when designed to address classroom stakeholders’ needs. Our previous work revealed a need for human-AI shared control when dynamically pairing students for collaborative learning in the classroom, but offered limited guidance on the role each agent should take. In this study, we designed storyboards for scenarios where teachers, students and AI co-orchestrate dynamic pairing when using AI-based adaptive math software for individual and collaborative learning. We surveyed 54 math teachers on their co-orchestration preferences. We found that teachers would like to share control with the AI to lessen their …

Hyperspectral Imaging Combined With Machine Learning For The Detection Of Fusiform Rust Disease Incidence In Loblolly Pine Seedlings, Piyush Pandey, Kitt G. Payn, Yuzhen Lu, Austin J. Heine, Trevor D. Walker, Juan J. Acosta, Sierra N. Young

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Loblolly pine is an economically important timber species in the United States, with almost 1 billion seedlings produced annually. The most significant disease affecting this species is fusiform rust, caused by Cronartium quercuum f. sp. fusiforme. Testing for disease resistance in the greenhouse involves artificial inoculation of seedlings followed by visual inspection for disease incidence. An automated, high-throughput phenotyping method could improve both the efficiency and accuracy of the disease screening process. This study investigates the use of hyperspectral imaging for the detection of diseased seedlings. A nursery trial comprising families with known in-field rust resistance data was conducted, and …

Heat Stress And Reproduction In Beef Cattle, Reganne K. Briggs, Kerry A. Rood Sep 2021

Heat Stress And Reproduction In Beef Cattle, Reganne K. Briggs, Kerry A. Rood

All Current Publications

Reproduction could be considered the most important production trait on a cow-calf operation. Economic outputs are sustained when cattle rebreed and calve every year in a timely manner. However, when cattle are unable to rebreed efficiently, profits may decrease for producers. It is well known that heat stress can negatively impact reproduction in cattle (Jordan, 2003). The Intermountain West has been impacted by drought and increasing temperatures, both of which can impact reproduction rates in cattle. This fact sheet helps producers understand the consequences of heat stress on cattle reproduction and how they can manage reproduction during increasing temperatures.

Comparison Of Theoretical And Multi-Fidelity Optimum Aerostructural Solutions For Wing Design, Jeffrey D. Taylor, Douglas F. Hunsaker Sep 2021

Comparison Of Theoretical And Multi-Fidelity Optimum Aerostructural Solutions For Wing Design, Jeffrey D. Taylor, Douglas F. Hunsaker

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Student Publications and Presentations

As contemporary aerostructural research for aircraft design trends toward high-fidelity computational methods, aerostructural solutions based on theory are often neglected or forgotten. In fact, in many modern aerostructural wing optimization studies, the elliptic lift distribution is used as a benchmark in place of theoretical aerostructural solutions with more appropriate constraints. In this paper, we review several theoretical aerostructural solutions that could be used as benchmark cases for wing design studies, and we compare them to high-fidelity solutions with similar constraints. Solutions are presented for studies with 1) constraints related to the wing integrated bending moment, 2) constraints related to the …

Calibration Anomaly For Goes-17 Abi Infrared Images Before Local Midnight, Fangfang Yu, Xiangqian Wu, Haifeng Qian, Jon Fulbright

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

In February 2021, a GOES-17 Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) infrared (IR) image with a stripe near the Equator came to our attention. It was found later that this abnormal feature also occurs on some other days for several IR channels, and the location of the anomaly changes with the ABI scan modes. Further characterization revealed that this calibration anomaly can be observed when the Focal Plane Module (FPM) temperature is stable, the predictive calibration (pCal) algorithm is enabled, and before the satellite midnight. The pCal algorithm is the adopted ABI IR operational calibration algorithm to mitigate the GOES-17 Loop Heat …

Room Temperature The Self-Calibrating Dual-Mode Detector - Say Goodby To The Long Traceability Chain, Marit Ulset Nordsveen, Eivind Bardalen, Jarle Gran Sep 2021

Room Temperature The Self-Calibrating Dual-Mode Detector - Say Goodby To The Long Traceability Chain, Marit Ulset Nordsveen, Eivind Bardalen, Jarle Gran

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

Low cost, high-accuracy calibration standards are requested by the radiometry community [1]. In the EMPIR-funded project chipS·CALe, we are developing self-calibrating dual-mode detectors for high-accuracy optical power measurements to meet this need. The dual-mode detector combines two primary standard techniques (PQEDs and electrical substitution radiometer [2]) into one device. This means the detector can be calibrated against its own internal primary reference. This eliminates the usually long and cumbersome traceability chain, and makes the detector suitable for calibrations in remote locations.

The absorbing element for both measurement modes is an induced-junction photodiode [3]. A photodiode has internal losses that make …
