You Feel Special When You Get A Library Card: Replicating Latinx Students' Public Library Feelings In Academic Library Spaces, Niki Fullmer
You Feel Special When You Get A Library Card: Replicating Latinx Students' Public Library Feelings In Academic Library Spaces, Niki Fullmer
Library Faculty & Staff Presentations
The goal of academic and public libraries is to support the community by contributing to life-long learning, access, and knowledge. However, the feelings produced by these institutions are dissimilar although both use similar practices to reach their communities. Researchers administered surveys and interviews at a university to understand Latinx students’ perceptions of the academic library. Many of the questions inquired about their feelings towards public libraries as well as cultural affirmation wishes they wanted implemented in academic libraries. In our proposed presentation, we will share how Latinx students view public and academic libraries in relation to their culture and ethnicity.

Teaching students to critically think and effectively research and write is a tall task, but an important one in ensuring students become informed citizens. The good news is we don’t have to face these challenging concepts alone. In Spring 2022, USU Librarians conducted a research study to better understand information literacy instruction that is occurring in our local high schools as well as understand teacher/librarian collaborations. Presenters will share key findings from this study and facilitate a discussion about how our expertise as teachers and librarians might intersect in ways that will better support our students. Participants will also discover …

Lecturas Contra Un Mundo Corrupto: La Buena Lectura (1879-1882), Andrea Castro

The text’s emotionally charged language refers to the mid-century disentailment laws under Juan Álvarez Mendizábal. Its phrases “templo destruido” and “imágenes mutiladas” depict the monastery’s confiscation as a tortuous experience before it passed into private ownership, thus testifying to the monastery’s resultant damage and loss of its historical community and identity. Similarly, other old church …

In April of 1842, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento was a relatively well-known journalist who had arrived in Santiago de Chile less than two years before, by the end of 1840; he wrote for different periodicals, but his most frequent participation was in El Mercurio. Published in Valparaíso, this was the only permanent daily newspaper in Chile, which granted a wide readership that gradually started to notice him, up to the point that he would become its first stable writer and the editor-in-chief (Martínez Gramuglia et al. 266-70). Even though he did not sign most of his contributions, by 1842 El …

A Monolithic Solid-State Interferometer For Real-Time Multi-Environment Measurements, Aaron J. Pung
Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications
The high degree of precision offered by optical interferometry makes it an ideal tool in many applications, including vibration detection, wind tunnel aerodynamics, surface topology measurements, and environmental sensing. In the latter case, real-time measurement of real-world environments is crucial to ensuring the health and safety of individuals operating within domestic and industrial domains. Currently, these measurements are made possible with portable fiber-based interferometer systems – systems that are also limited by high cost, fragility, coupling loss, and low power. This work presents a lightweight free-space interferometer that is versatile, modular, and compact. The interferometer is monolithic, geometrically simple, easy …

Buried wood is an important but understudied component of reclamation soils. We examined the impacts of buried wood amounts and species on the growth of the common reclamation tree species trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides). In a greenhouse study, aspen seedlings were planted into four soil types, upland derived fine forest floor-mineral mix (fFFMM), coarse forest floor-mineral mix (cFFMM), and lowland derived peat and peat-mineral mix (PMM), that were mixed with either aspen or pine wood shavings at four concentrations (0%, 10%, 20% and 50% of total volume). Height and diameter growth, chlorophyll concentration, and leaf and stem biomass were measured. …

Summer base flows for rivers are critical for maintaining water quality, healthy fish populations, and a functional aquatic ecosystem. Low summer base flows can increase water temperatures and lower dissolved oxygen levels. These conditions can cause Brown Trout (Salmo trutta) energetic stress and result in lower angler catch. The goal of this study was to determine if low river flows and higher water temperatures influence angler catch rates of Brown Trout on the lower Logan River, Utah and to better understand angler use of the lower river. We performed a creel survey on approximately 6.4 km of the …
