A Network Flow Approach For Constellation Planning, Skylar A. Cox, Greg N. Droge, John H. Humble, Konnor D. Andrews
Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications
A graph-based network flow approach to constellation planning is presented that respects spacecraft resources and mission constraints to arrive at a preliminary operational schedule. The method discretizes task fulfillment opportunity windows into graph nodes and then adds edges based on feasibility of transition between these opportunities, either by slew maneuvers or extended-time task fulfillment during downlink operations. Intelligent graph pruning is applied to improve computation performance and provide a versatile planning capability with a minimal impact on the resulting solution. A network flow formulation allows for a simultaneous search for spacecraft plans using a Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP). The …

Local Production And Developing Core Regions: Ceramic Characterization In The Lake Pátzcuaro Basin, Western Mexico, Anna S. Cohen, Amy J. Hirshman, Daniel E. Pierce, Jeffrey R. Ferguson
Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications
A core region is the first place for expected shifts in archaeological materials before, during, and after political changes like state emergence and imperial consolidation. Yet, studies of ceramic production have shown that there are sometimes limited or more subtle changes in the ceramic economy throughout such political fluctuations. This article synthesizes recent efforts to address political economic changes via geochemical characterization (neutron activation analysis; NAA) in the Lake Pátzcuaro Basin in western Mexico. This region was home to the Purépecha state and then empire (Tarascan; ca. AD 1350-1530), one of the most powerful kingdoms in the Americas before European …

We conducted a range-wide investigation of the dynamics of site-level reproductive rate of northern spotted owls using survey data from 11 study areas across the subspecies geographic range collected during 1993–2018. Our analytical approach accounted for imperfect detection of owl pairs and misclassification of successful reproduction (i.e., at least one young fledged) and contributed further insights into northern spotted owl population ecology and dynamics. Both nondetection and state misclassification were important, especially because factors affecting these sources of error also affected focal ecological parameters. Annual probabilities of site occupancy were greatest at sites with successful reproduction in the previous year …

Empowering Teaching Excellence Conference
A growing number of students are taking online and hybrid courses and many instructors are looking for ways to keep students engaged in these virtual settings. This presentation will focus on sharing lessons learned through using digital tools such as PearDeck and Google Applications (i.e., JamBoard, Google Docs, etc.) to engage students during synchronous and asynchronous classes. We will also share how we used student feedback to make improvements to current and future lessons using these digital tools. Participants will actively engage with the digital tools through a student's lens and then see the tool from an instructor's perspective. Participants …
Learning Strategies Lift Students, Melanie Chambers
Learning Strategies Lift Students, Melanie Chambers
Empowering Teaching Excellence Conference
Students feel more confident in college courses when they know how to learn effectively. Incorporating learning strategies into class can lift student performance (Flippo, 2009) and transfer to other courses. In this session we will go over several evidence-based learning strategies that you can easily apply to your class. Examples include: time management semester planners, Cornell note taking method formats, Annotating textbooks, and test preparation strategies. With the adjustments of the Academic Support Services, there were lessons learned with taking the strategies to where the students were. The lessons kept are the strategies that remain the same, however the way …

Basic Need Challenges Of Today's Students: How To Best Support These Needs, Mateja Savoie Roskos, Jennifer Grewe, Jess Lucero, Jan Thornton
Empowering Teaching Excellence Conference
College students face a vast array of basic needs challenges that can impact their ability to thrive inside and outside of the classroom. Basic needs can include (but are not limited to) food and housing security, healthcare for mental and physical health/well-being, childcare, resources for personal hygiene, and more. Utah State University has many programs and services that aim to support the basic needs of students. In addition, there are many off campus resources that students are often eligible for. Being aware of the resources available and connecting students to those resources is essential when helping students navigate these hardships. …

Teaching Without A Traditional Textbook, Jen Burbank, Stephanie Western
Empowering Teaching Excellence Conference
Record numbers of faculty have introduced digital content options into their courses since going online in the spring of 2020. Many of the changes to course structure and increased use of Canvas as well as alternative text options are here to stay. Learn how to ditch that traditional textbook and make use of open educational resources (OER). Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching and learning materials that are free to use, adapt, and redistribute. With the cost of college education increasing, it is more important than ever to include freely accessible course materials for students whenever possible. Come and learn …

The pandemic shown a light on the importance of students having a sense of belonging, which research shows is an important indicator of student success. However our syllabi can unintentionally signal "you don't belong" to some of our students. In this presentation, we will discuss ways we can change our course syllabi to better serve as a welcome mat for students, particularly first-generation and historically minoritized students. Relying on the work done in the Student Experience Project, participants will learn about evidence-based changes they can make to their syllabi, with particular focus on "low-lift" changes that can be made in …

Simple Techniques To Encourage Long-Term Retrieval, Stacy Bevan, Maryann Schneider
Empowering Teaching Excellence Conference
Amid massive changes in teaching, one thing that remains constant is that we want students to really learn, not simply memorize to pass a test and then forget everything. We want our students to be successful in their studying rather than wasting time rereading highlighted text with glazed over eyes. Despite these ambitions, teachers often use ineffective techniques and students lack the metacognitive strategies needed to enable learning. The presenters of this session will highlight evidence-based techniques found in the book "Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning" by Peter C. Brown. They will also share personal experiences from …

Increasing Student Success By Integrating Career Education Into The Classroom, Dannon Loveland, Cindy Higgins
Empowering Teaching Excellence Conference
During the last several years of upheaval and change, equity become an increasingly important topic of focus and research in higher education. Studies have found that the number one reason students list for pursuing higher education is to get a better job. Students who don’t access career services are often those who would benefit the most. This has caused a rethinking in the way that career education is delivered to students from a service model which only reaches a small percentage of students to integration into the student experience. Faculty are in a unique position to promote career development in …
Inclusive Pedagogy: Benefitting All Learners, Madison Heider, Lindsay Thunell
Inclusive Pedagogy: Benefitting All Learners, Madison Heider, Lindsay Thunell
Empowering Teaching Excellence Conference
The prevalence of students with disabilities and learning differences attending college is steadily increasing. This calls for reform among educators to adjust their teaching practices to serve this diversity of learners more effectively. Traditional methods for addressing disability and learning differences within the college classroom put the responsibility on individual students to request accommodations and adapt their learning to the outlined course requirements. Inclusive pedagogy creates learning that is “meaningful, relevant, and accessible to all.” This represents an institution-wide shift in mindset and responsibility toward creating content, instructional delivery, and assessments that are accessible, equitable, and beneficial for everyone. This …

Inquiry Journal Facilitation: A Writing Assignment For Practicing Exploratory Speech, Jessica Rivera-Mueller
English Faculty Publications
The Inquiry Journal Facilitation is a project that helps preservice teachers develop habits of mind for engaging in critical dialogue about the situations they confront in their teaching contexts. In this project, preservice teachers compose a piece of writing that examines an idea, question, or issue that emerges from their clinical teaching site and lead an inquiry-based discussion about the ideas raised in their writing. Pairing the activity of writing with the activity of discussion creates a context for preservice teachers to create "exploratory speech" (Smagorinsky, 2013) collaboratively. In doing so, preservice teachers practice intellectual moves–framing observations, explaining those constructions, …
