Settler-On-Settler Violence: Ritual Protocols In Youtube Street Fight Videos - Part Two, Kelly Menzel, Tyson Yunkaporta
Settler-On-Settler Violence: Ritual Protocols In Youtube Street Fight Videos - Part Two, Kelly Menzel, Tyson Yunkaporta
Journal of Indigenous Research
This is part two of a series of two papers exploring a project was conducted by two Australian Aboriginal researchers, one male and one female, and might be described as ‘reverse anthropology’, in the same way that people sometimes refer to positive discrimination as ‘reverse racism’. But we would just call it anthropology; a tidal river is still a river when it flows back the other way. The project could hardly be acknowledged as anthropology though, as it was based on Indigenous methods of inquiry that do not yet belong to a formal discipline. Initially the goal was to disrupt …

Symplectic Reduction Along A Submanifold, Peter Crooks, Maxence Mayrand
Symplectic Reduction Along A Submanifold, Peter Crooks, Maxence Mayrand
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
We introduce the process of symplectic reduction along a submanifold as a uniform approach to taking quotients in symplectic geometry. This construction holds in the categories of smooth manifolds, complex analytic spaces, and complex algebraic varieties, and has an interpretation in terms of derived stacks in shifted symplectic geometry. It also encompasses Marsden-Weinstein-Meyer reduction, Mikami-Weinstein reduction, the pre-images of Poisson transversals under moment maps, symplectic cutting, symplectic implosion, and the Ginzburg-Kazhdan construction of Moore-Tachikawa varieties in topological quantum field theory. A key feature of our construction is a concrete and systematic association of a Hamiltonian G-space 𝔐𝐺,𝑆 to …

Pausing While Programming: Insights From Keystroke Analysis, Raj Shrestha, Juho Leinonen, Albina Zavgorodniaia, Arto Hellas, John M. Edwards
Computer Science Student Research
Pauses in typing are generally considered to indicate cognitive processing and so are of interest in educational contexts. While much prior work has looked at typing behavior of Computer Science students, this paper presents results of a study specifically on the pausing behavior of students in Introductory Computer Programming. We investigate the frequency of pauses of different lengths, what last actions students take before pausing, and whether there is a correlation between pause length and performance in the course. We find evidence that frequency of pauses of all lengths is negatively correlated with performance, and that, while some keystrokes initiate …

Multiple Discharges Before Leader Inception In Long Air Gaps Under Positive Switching Impulses, Xiangen Zhao, Juhyeong Lee, Gang Liu, Lei Jia, Yang Liu, Junjia He, Yaping Du
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
There are multiple corona bursts before leader inception when the rising rate of the applied voltage or electric field is not sufficiently high enough in long positive sparks. In existing studies, no attention has been paid to whether these corona bursts occur in the same location, and they are mostly considered directly as belonging to the same discharge. However, this paper presents that in a typical rod-plate long air gap, the multiple corona bursts before leader inception are distributed in at least two different locations, and the highest probability of three discharges occurs. Also, the discharge occurs with the highest …
Sustaining Water Conservation: A Synthesis Of Research On Motivators, Message Construction, And Tactics, Mahmudur R. Aveek, David E. Rosenberg
Sustaining Water Conservation: A Synthesis Of Research On Motivators, Message Construction, And Tactics, Mahmudur R. Aveek, David E. Rosenberg
Civil and Environmental Engineering Student Research
Urban water managers face the challenge of sustaining conservation behavior. A review of 77 papers across water, energy, and environmental conservation was conducted to understand how programs encourage reduced water use. Motivators were external or internal. Theories of behavior change targeted different social-psychological factors. No single model addressed all aspects. Different message contents (water use, self-comparison, social comparison, leak information) and tactics (communication medium, frequency, program duration) reduced use by 0.5% to 25%. Reductions typically lasted less than a year. Quantifying the effects of specific motivators, message contents, and tactics was difficult due to varied contexts. Effective conservation messages included …

Utah’s population has seen significant growth in recent years resulting in population increase outside of the Wasatch Front and into Utah's high mountain valleys. These locations include Bear Lake Valley, Ogden Valley, Morgan and Henefer, Park City, Wasatch Valley, and Sanpete Valley. Much of the information presented here would also apply to the Uintah Basin and other high elevation locations in eastern Utah. Common characteristics of these valleys include high elevations (greater than 5,000 feet) leading to short growing seasons. Many homeowners who are new to these regions wish to establish perennial fruit crops in their gardens. This publication outlines …

Libraries and archives have differing opinions on how much effort to put into content description. Yet, descriptive practices meant to reduce processing time and increase exposure to collections can have unintended impacts on long-term user discovery. This project tests minimal and full description to determine the effects on discoverability.

Diversifying Knowledge: Presenting And Applying A Framework For Inclusive Graduate Program Websites, Jamal-Jared Alexander, Hannah L. Stevens, Rebecca Walton
English Student Research
This paper reports our experience improving the inclusivity of Utah State University’s (USU) Technical Communication and Rhetoric (TCR) graduate program’s online materials. We report outcomes and implications of a 20-hour project in which Stevens applies aspects of an analytical framework developed by Alexander. In addition to the nine-tactic framework introduced in this report, readers may find value in four takeaways we share, based on our experience applying the framework.
Cultivating Ethics In The Peer Review Process, Rachel Welton Bryson, Sam Clem
Cultivating Ethics In The Peer Review Process, Rachel Welton Bryson, Sam Clem
English Student Research
After describing the content and implementation of an anti-racist scholarly review training informed by recent scholarship in technical communication (TC), the authors reflect on an unanticipated outcome of that training: a participant using language from the training in an attempt to silence an author they were reviewing. We analyze this experience through a framework of modern virtue ethics scholarship and explore ways to cultivate more ethical peer review practices. Drawing upon elements of ethical self-cultivation articulated by Vallor, we use concepts of moral habituation, relational understanding, and reflective self-examination to understand how to cultivate more ethical, reflexive peer review processes.

Assisted Migration Is Plausible For A Boreal Tree Species Under Climate Change: A Quantitative And Population Genetics Study Of Trembling Aspen (Populus Tremuloides Michx.) In Western Canada, Chen Ding, Jean S. Brouard
Aspen Bibliography
A novel method was tested for improving tree breeding strategies that integrate quantitative and population genetics based on range-wide reciprocal transplant experiments. Five reciprocal common garden tests of Populus tremuloides were investigated including 6450 trees across western Canada focusing on adaptation traits and growth. Both genetic parameters and home-site transplant models were evaluated. We found a genetic trade-off between growth and early spring leaf flush and late fall senescence. Coefficients of phenotypic variation (CVp) of cell lysis (CL), a measure of freezing injury, shrank from 0.28 to 0.10 during acclimation in the fall, and the CVp slope versus …

Women-Owned Businesses In Utah: Status, Challenges, And Opportunities, Susan R. Madsen, April Townsend
Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications
Twenty-five years ago, in 1997, Utah’s Women’s Business Center, in partnership with the Utah Technology Finance Corporation and Small Business Administration, sponsored a comprehensive survey of Utah women business owners.1 The purpose of the study was to better understand the specific roles women-owned businesses play in Utah’s economy. It was hoped that the research would stimulate a rich dialogue within the business community regarding the nature of women-owned businesses and better anticipate future needs, and this is indeed what happened. The 1997 report addressed four questions:
- What is the economic power of women business owners in Utah?
- What are …

A Review Of Acceptance And Commitment Therapy For Adolescents: Developmental And Contextual Considerations, Julie M. Petersen, Patricia Zurita Ona, Michael P. Twohig
Psychology Faculty Publications
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) offers a promising, transdiagnostic treatment approach for a wide range of mental health concerns in adolescents. Although research on ACT for adolescents is still developing, there is encouraging theoretical and empirical support in this area. The ability of ACT to adjust and account for developmental considerations and contexts in adolescence is discussed, alongside the theoretical support for using ACT with adolescents. A broad review of 34 studies on ACT with adolescents is then presented—ACT with adolescents has some preliminary support for anxiety, depression, disordered eating, chronic pain, and more. Detailed examples of how to implement …
