The Exceptional Fauziah Gambus: Negotiating Novelty, Piety, And Self-Promotion In An Androcentric Malaysian Musical Scene, Joe Kinzer Jan 2023

The Exceptional Fauziah Gambus: Negotiating Novelty, Piety, And Self-Promotion In An Androcentric Malaysian Musical Scene, Joe Kinzer

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

This article highlights several performance personas—including novelty and Islamic piety—at work in the career of Fauziah Gambus, a female gambus player in a highly androcentric musical scene. I argue that gendered assumptions and stereotypes have not restricted her but have instead enabled her to gain more popular success and notoriety than many of her Malaysian male counterparts. In unpacking her career, I examine how Fauziah synthesizes a variety of self- promotion strategies to achieve success beyond traditional gambus music channels.

Profeatx: A Parallelized Protein Feature Extraction Suite For Machine Learning, David Guevara-Barrientos, Rakesh Kaundal Jan 2023

Profeatx: A Parallelized Protein Feature Extraction Suite For Machine Learning, David Guevara-Barrientos, Rakesh Kaundal

Computer Science Student Research

Machine learning algorithms have been successfully applied in proteomics, genomics and transcriptomics. and have helped the biological community to answer complex questions. However, most machine learning methods require lots of data, with every data point having the same vector size. The biological sequence data, such as proteins, are amino acid sequences of variable length, which makes it essential to extract a definite number of features from all the proteins for them to be used as input into machine learning models. There are numerous methods to achieve this, but only several tools let researchers encode their proteins using multiple schemes without …

Exploring The Impact Of Coaches’ Emotional Abuse On Intercollegiate Student-Athletes’ Experiences, Katherine N. Alexander, Kat V. Adams, Travis E. Dorsch Jan 2023

Exploring The Impact Of Coaches’ Emotional Abuse On Intercollegiate Student-Athletes’ Experiences, Katherine N. Alexander, Kat V. Adams, Travis E. Dorsch

Human Development and Family Studies Student Research

Despite widespread anecdotal accounts of coaches’ emotional abuse in intercollegiate sports, empirical literature is lacking. To address this gap, the present exploratory study was designed to explore how former intercollegiate student-athletes interpreted experiences of emotionally abusive coaching. Former female NCAA and NJCAA student-athletes (N = 14; Mage = 25.3 years) took part in semi-structured, in-depth interviews. Data were interpreted using a constructivist grounded theory approach. The final product of the research was a three-stage grounded theory explaining how former student-athletes interpret their experiences of emotional abuse over time organized into sections on antecedents to abuse, experiences and actions …

Hemispheric Reconstructions: Post-Emancipation Social Movements And Capitalist Reaction In Colombia And The United States, James E. Sanders Jan 2023

Hemispheric Reconstructions: Post-Emancipation Social Movements And Capitalist Reaction In Colombia And The United States, James E. Sanders

History Faculty Publications

As historians have begun to conceptualize the U.S. Civil War as a global event, so too must they consider Reconstruction as a political process that transcended national boundaries. The United States and Colombia both abolished slavery during civil wars; ex-slaves in both societies struggled for full citizenship and landholding, partially succeeding for a time; in both societies, a harsh reaction ripped full citizenship from the freedpeople and denied their claims to the land. These events, usually studied only as part of a national story in either the United States or Colombia, can also be understood, and perhaps be better understood, …

Aspen Bibliography

The aim of the present research was to study the dynamics of growth and conditions of aspen stands under climate change, according to different periods of forest inventory. The study was conducted in modal aspen forests growing in the subtaiga/forest steppe region of Central Siberia. Aspen forests grow intensively at young age, which allows them to realize maximum carbon sequestration potential. The research was based on forest inventory data from 1972, 1982, 2002, and 2021 (the study was conducted on a limited territory). There was a steady increase in temperatures in the growing season from 1982 to 2002. The amount …

Transfer Effects Of A Multiple-Joint Isokinetic Eccentric Resistance Training Intervention To Nontraining-Specific Traditional Muscle Strength Measures, Steven Spencer, Brennan J. Thompson, Eadric Bressel, Talin Louder, David C. Harrell

Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications

Relatively few investigations have examined the transfer effects of multiple-joint isokinetic eccentric only (MJIE) resistance training on non-specific measures of muscle strength. This study investigated the transfer effects of a short-term MJIE leg press (Eccentron) resistance training program on several non-specific measures of lower-body strength. Fifteen participants performed Eccentron training three times/week for four weeks and were evaluated on training-specific Eccentron peak force (EccPF), nontraining-specific leg press DCER one-repetition maximum (LP 1 RM), and peak torques of the knee extensors during isokinetic eccentric (Ecc30), isokinetic concentric (Con150) and isometric (IsomPT) tasks before and after the training period. The training elicited …

Chesapeake Bay Watershed Residents’ And Farmers’ Concerns And Perceptions Of Water Quality, Edem Avemegah, Jessica D. Ulrich-Schad Jan 2023

Chesapeake Bay Watershed Residents’ And Farmers’ Concerns And Perceptions Of Water Quality, Edem Avemegah, Jessica D. Ulrich-Schad

Publications

Poor water quality is an issue in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed (CBW). In this rapidly urbanizing landscape, both farmers and non-farm residents contribute to nutrient pollution of rivers and streams. Understanding these important stakeholders’ views of water quality problems and how to address them is essential for creating an economically thriving and environmentally beneficial agricultural system that all residents depend upon. To understand key stakeholders’ views on water quality both locally and regionally, researchers from Utah State University and the Pennsylvania State University surveyed residents of the CBW and agricultural producers of the southern part of the CBW (Maryland, Delaware, …

Regulating Coopetition In An Ev Charging Market, Arthur J. Caplan Jan 2023

Regulating Coopetition In An Ev Charging Market, Arthur J. Caplan

Applied Economics Faculty Publications

This paper explores the coopetitive relationship between a private firm and a utility when the utility simultaneously competes with the firm in the output (EV charging-station) market and potentially cooperates in the input (electricity) market through its choice of a mark-up rate on the price of electricity supplied to the firm’s charging stations. In the absence of regulation, we find the utility chooses to self-regulate itself (i.e., cooperate with the firm) in the input market in order to continue earning revenue from the sale of electricity to the firm’s charging stations. We uncover the condition under which the utility chooses …

Sheep Ingestive Behavior And Tannin Selection In Pampa Grassland And Feedlot, Marina Terra Braga Jan 2023

Sheep Ingestive Behavior And Tannin Selection In Pampa Grassland And Feedlot, Marina Terra Braga

Green Canyon Environmental Research Area, Logan Utah

The Pampa grassland biome has high plant biodiversity, some with significant secondary compound concentrations such as tannins. Tannin inclusion in ruminant diets may improve meat quality and productivity. However, voluntary intake of this phenolic compound can be a challenge. This dissertation includes three studies within this context. The first study documented whether sheep consume tannin-rich Desmodium incanum (DI), the most common Pampa herbaceous legume species. The second study evaluated how forage tannin and protein concentration influenced sheep feedlot feed selection and the diet affects performance parameters. The third study evaluated sheep feeding behavior in a Pampa native pasture, and how …

Chesapeake Bay Watershed Residents’ And Farmers’ Views On Urban And Suburban Growth, Edem Avemegah, Jessica D. Ulrich-Schad

Publications

What the future of agriculture in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed (CBW) will look like is uncertain due to issues such as the loss of farmland to sprawling suburban development. In this rapidly urbanizing landscape, tension can also arise between farmers and their non-farm neighbors due to their proximity to each other. Understanding the concerns of these stakeholders regarding the urban and suburban growth and the potential problems that are likely to occur with farmers being in close contact with their non-farm neighbors is a good step in ensuring an economically thriving and environmentally beneficial agricultural system that all residents depend …

Future Of Great Salt Lake Survey, Lisa W. Welsh, Joanna Endter-Wada, Karin M. Kettenring, Anna Mcentire

Reports

The Future of Great Salt Lake Survey was conducted in fall 2022 when state and global attention on Great Salt Lake was ramping up, following record lows of the elevation of lake water levels. In the survey, we asked Utahns their opinions on securing water for Great Salt Lake and focused on strategies that individuals, local communities, and the state of Utah could pursue. When it comes to how water is used and managed in Utah, there are multiple actors and institutions who all make decisions and have authority or ability to take different actions. While the state of …

Differences In The Spectral Output Of Single- And Double-Ended High-Pressure-Sodium Lamps, Jun Liu, Bruce Bugbee

Photobiology

High pressure sodium lamps have a low fraction of blue photons, and this fraction is reduced from 3.6% to 2.6% in the newer style double-ended bulbs. About half of the photons in the “blue” region (400 to 499 nm) are between 491 and 499 nm. These photons have low biological activity for cryptochrome activation.
