High Frequency Radio Communication, Tyler Larsen Apr 2023

High Frequency Radio Communication, Tyler Larsen

Physics Capstone Projects

High frequency radio communication has been the most reliable form of communication for many decades. Over that period, we have learned and experienced times of enhanced signals along with complete radio blackouts. The purpose of this research is to collect and analyze radio signal data to see the evidence of various reasons as to why these phenomena occur. A radio antenna was set up at USU campus to retrieve the signals from beacon networks across the globe that transmit signals every 15 minutes. By tracking a few of these signals we can locate the times of discrepancies in the signals …

The Kp Index And Behavior Of Quiet Periods, Collette Walbeck Apr 2023

The Kp Index And Behavior Of Quiet Periods, Collette Walbeck

Physics Capstone Projects

The Kp-index quantifies the electromagnetic effects in the Earth’s atmosphere and is used in a variety of scientific fields. Higher Kp values tend to be the focus in these fields as they relate to high solar activity and geomagnetic storms. This study aimed to examine the significance, if any, of lower Kp indices. A simple data analysis was performed on continuous sequences of low Kp values, deemed Quiet Periods. Both the daily average of the values and the full set of Kp data were used. A decaying exponential relationship was discovered between the length of these periods and their frequencies …

Effectiveness Of Multilayer Graded-Z Forms Of Radiation Shielding, Brinley Packer Apr 2023

Effectiveness Of Multilayer Graded-Z Forms Of Radiation Shielding, Brinley Packer

Physics Capstone Projects

This study explored how different forms of radiation shielding were more or less effective than standard single-layer shielding. Beta and gamma radiation sources were used and measured using a Geiger counter to determine how well the various forms of shielding protect against the radiation. The shielding effectiveness of standard homogeneous materials (e.g., graphite, carbon/epoxy composites, aluminum, and lead) of various thicknesses for different radiation sources was measured to provide standards for comparison. Once a basis of effective shielding was established, the study can go into greater depth into how to use shielding materials to be more effective, to better shield …

Beaver Pond Geomorphology Influences Pond Nitrogen Retention And Denitrification, Desneiges Murray, Bethany T. Neilson, Janice Brahney Apr 2023

Beaver Pond Geomorphology Influences Pond Nitrogen Retention And Denitrification, Desneiges Murray, Bethany T. Neilson, Janice Brahney

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Beaver ponds are increasingly promoted as a strategy for physical stream restoration, and more recently recognized as natural solutions for excess nonpoint source pollutants, such as nitrogen (N). Beaver ponds facilitate N transformations on the streamscape by increasing sediment-water interactions and creating low and high redox conditions in close proximity. Because beaver ponds vary widely in their geomorphology, the spatial extent of morphological units should dictate the degree of biogeochemical processing. We explore the role of beaver pond geomorphic units in facilitating sediment N transformations using a sediment mass balance approach. We quantified input, output, and transformation of N species …

Missing The Warning Signs? The Case Of "Yellow Air Day" Advisories In Northern Utah, Arthur J. Caplan Apr 2023

Missing The Warning Signs? The Case Of "Yellow Air Day" Advisories In Northern Utah, Arthur J. Caplan

Applied Economics Faculty Publications

Using a dataset consisting of daily vehicle trips, PM2.5 concentrations, and a host of climactic control variables, we test the hypothesis that “yellow air day advisories” issued by the Utah Division of Air Quality resulted in subsequent reductions in vehicle trips taken during northern Utah’s winter-inversion seasons in the early 2000 s. Winter inversions occur in northern Utah when PM2.5 concentrations (derived mainly from vehicle emissions) become trapped in the lower atmosphere, leading to unhealthy air quality over a span of time known colloquially as “red air day episodes”. When concentrations rise above 15 μg/m3 toward the …

A Deep Dive Into User's Preferences And Behavior Around Mobile Phone Sharing, Rizu Paudel, Prakriti Dumaru, Ankit Shrestha, Huzeyfe M. Kocabas, Mahdi Nasrullah Al-Ameen

Computer Science Student Research

Users share their personal devices with different entities in various circumstances. While prior research shed light on the broad reasons behind the sharing of mobile phones, there is a dearth of systematic study to understand the user's decision-making process and the underlying preferences and concerns in the context of phone sharing. To address these gaps, we designed a prototype that we leveraged to investigate the interplay between a user's relationship with sharees, preferences of sharing a subset of apps with a certain entity, perceived sensitivity of the apps being shared, and how these factors relate to their authentication behavior. We …

Understanding spatial and temporal dynamics of soil water within fields is critical for effective variable rate irrigation (VRI) management. The objectives of this study were to develop VRI zones, manage irrigation rates within VRI zones, and examine temporal differences in soil volumetric water content (VWC) from irrigation events via soil sensors across zones. Five irrigation zones were delineated after two years (2016 and 2017) of yield and evapotranspiration (ET) data collection. Soil sensors were placed within each zone to give real time data of VWC values and assist in irrigation decisions within a 23 ha field of winter wheat ( …

Processes Of Change In Online Acceptance And Commitment Therapy For Hoarding, Jennifer Krafft, Julie M. Petersen, Clarissa W. Ong, Michael P. Twohig, Michael E. Levin Apr 2023

Processes Of Change In Online Acceptance And Commitment Therapy For Hoarding, Jennifer Krafft, Julie M. Petersen, Clarissa W. Ong, Michael P. Twohig, Michael E. Levin

Psychology Faculty Publications

Initial research suggests that acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is efficacious in treating hoarding problems, but processes of change in ACT for hoarding are unclear. Thus, we investigated potential mediators and moderators in a randomized waitlist-controlled trial (n = 73) of web-based ACT for U.S. adults with clinically significant hoarding problems. Hoarding severity was significantly correlated with hoarding-related psychological inflexibility (r = 0.52, p < .01), mindful awareness (r = −0.40, p < .01), and beliefs that people with hoarding disorder are different from others (r = 0.31, p < .01). Effects of ACT were not significantly moderated by age, gender, or baseline hoarding-related psychological inflexibility. Longitudinal mediation analyses did not support mediation by hypothesized processes. However, the effect of condition on hoarding severity at follow-up was significantly mediated by hoarding-related psychological inflexibility at follow-up (ab = −0.41 [95% CI: 0.85, −0.01]), and change in hoarding-related psychological inflexibility (r = 0.73, p < .01) and mindful awareness (r = −0.69, p < .01) was correlated with change in hoarding symptoms over time. Overall, our results suggest that psychological inflexibility, self-stigma, and mindful awareness are indeed related to hoarding symptoms, but we cannot conclude that they underly the effects of ACT for hoarding. Limitations include a predominantly White and female sample.

Examining Teachers' Beliefs About 3d Learning: The Importance Of Analyzing Multiple Data Sources, Jessie Nixon, Colin Hennessy Elliott, Jefferey B. Bush, Mimi Recker

Publications

While teachers’ beliefs about curricular reforms such as NGSS and 3D learning (science practices, disciplinary core ideas, and crosscutting concepts) often influence whether or not they enact these practices in the science classroom, it is unclear if changes in beliefs influence practices or if engaging in new teaching practices changes teachers’ beliefs. Through a comparative case study, we examine how two science teachers' beliefs about 3D learning related to their implementation of a science unit introducing students to a sensor-based physical computing system. We found that it was necessary to triangulate multiple data sources to better understand teachers’ beliefs. We …

Aspen Bibliography

In boreal forests, European aspen (Populus tremula L.) is a keystone species that hosts a variety of accompanying species including epiphytic lichens. Forest management actions have led to a decrease in aspen abundance and subsequent loss of suitable habitats of epiphytic lichens. In this study, we evaluate the environmental responses of epiphytic lichen species richness and community composition on aspen, focusing on the potential of remote sensing by combined hyperspectral imaging and airborne laser scanning to identify suitable habitats for epiphytic lichens. We measured different substrate and habitat parameters in the field (e.g., aspen diameter and bark pH) …

I-Optimal Or G-Optimal: Do We Have To Choose?, Stephen J. Walsh, Lu Lu, Christine M. Anderson-Cook

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

When optimizing an experimental design for good prediction performance based on an assumed second order response surface model, it is common to focus on a single optimality criterion, either G-optimality, for best worst-case prediction precision, or I-optimality, for best average prediction precision. In this article, we illustrate how using particle swarm optimization to construct a Pareto front of non-dominated designs that balance these two criteria yields some highly desirable results. In most scenarios, there are designs that simultaneously perform well for both criteria. Seeing alternative designs that vary how they balance the performance of G- and I …

Nanoscale Mechanics Of Li Anodes In Solid-State Li Batteries, Md Takmil Sakir Apr 2023

Nanoscale Mechanics Of Li Anodes In Solid-State Li Batteries, Md Takmil Sakir

Student Research Symposium

Solid-state Li metal batteries have emerged as a promising way to enhance energy density and safety compared to the traditional Li-ion batteries. Even though numerous research studies are being conducted in this field, many unresolved issues have been hindering the commercialization of such batteries such as dendrite formation, loss of contact, battery failure in low cycles, etc. One of the reasons is the lack of knowledge on the deformation mechanisms (especially creep) at the atomistic level. In this study, Molecular Dynamics simulations have been performed and the creep behavior and superplasticity of pure Lithium was observed in nano scale. Grain …
