Bulletin No. 108 - The Effect Of Formalin On The Vitality Of Seed Grain, Robert Stewart, John Stephens
UAES Bulletins
The Utah Experiment Station for a number of years has recommended the formalin treatment for the prevention of smut in wheat, oats and barley. Since the publication of Bulletin No. 84 by Prof. L. A. Merrill on the Subject, a number of complaints regarding the treatment have been received. We learned, also, by traveling over the state, that these complaints were quite general. The work reported in this bulletin was undertaken for the purpose of throwing light on these questions, and it is hoped that the results obtained will be of value to the farmers of the state.

The following observations were made on tours in the Central Provinces and Berar, in 1908 and 1909. The first of the tours comprised a visit to the hill of Asirgarb in Nimar (26-28. ix. 08) and a journey by road from Ellichpur over the Satpuras through the forests of the Melghat to Lewada where the Sipna valley opens towards the river Tapti, (3-19. x. 09): the second comprised a visit to Nagpur (14-22. ii. 09) and the third an excursion into the Melghat from Akot, along the Ban valley and to Jalgaon in the Buldana district (16-'-26. ix. 09). Unter dem Sammelnamen TetraZonia sind in den letzten Jahren eine Menge neuer Arten aus Südamerika beschrieben worden, ohne daß deren Verwandtschaft angegeben wäre, oder aber, wo die neuen Arten auf verschiedene Gattungen verteilt wurden, ist dies einzig auf die Zahl der Palpenglieder hin erfolgt, ein Verfahren, das niemals gebilligt werden kann, weil eine auf nur ein Organ begründete Einteilung notwendigerweise mangelhaft sein muß. Es ist daher wohl zu entschuldigen , wenn mehrere Bearbeiter den in dieser Gruppe aufgestellten neuen Gattungen überhaupt keine Beachtung schenkten.
