A

Kopf, Thorax und Mittelsegment dunkel erzgrun oder blaugrun. Hinterleib rot, die niedergedruckten Hinterrandor der einzeln en Ringe gebraunt, der erste Ring ganz oder bis auf einen sehmalen roten Endrand schwarz. Kopf rund, kurz gelbgrau bebaart; Clypeus nicht vorgezogen, etwas breiter als lang, blau, mit violettem Schimmer, seine Basis erzgrun, ziemlich grob und sparsam, an der Basis feiner punktiert. Stirnschildchen rundlich gewolbt, zerstreut und fein punktiert. Wangen, Stirn und Schlafen dicht und fein, Scheitel weniger dioht punktiert.

In dieser Zeitschrift, p. 579, veroffentlicht H. Friese einen Artikel "Uber einige nomenklatorische Anderungen", in welchem er ausfubrt, infolge davon, dafs durch J. Perez die durftige Beschreibung von E. longicornis Linne erganzt und auf eine bestimmte Art (namlich E. longicomis Perez, Friese) gedeutet und festgelegt worden sei, babe nur noch die Auffassung , Bescbreibung und Type von Perez Beweiskraft und nicht die von Linne. Dabei beruft Friese sicb ohne Berechtigung auf die internationalen Regeln der zoologischen Nomenklatur, Berlin 1901, V. § 1, 2 und 3.

Successful farming in Utah is dependent upon two main factors: First, the economic use of irrigation water upon the lands lying under the irrigation ditch, and second, upon the correct practice of the principles of dry farming upon those lands not susceptible to irrigation. Dry farming in Utah is, therefore, of great importance and it becomes essential to learn something of the nature of the dry farming soils of the State.

The soil of the Southern Utah Experiment Farm is a very interesting type: it is highly charged with gypsum and thereby presents a condition unique in reported studies of the soils of America. Gypsiferous soils are characteristic of a large portion of Southern Utah; many of them are derived from shale, others from sandstone, impregnated with gypsum.

Do not wait until the crop is picked to select show specimens. The successful exhibitor makes his prize selections in the orchard while the fruit i still on the tree. The specimens here recorded are part of a collection made at Medicine Hat, Alberta, by Mr. J. R. Malloch, between September 1st and October 15th, 1911. Other species of bees, which have not been studied, were also collected.

On The Status Of Some Species Of The Genus Panurginus, J. C. Crawford

In a paper on the bees of Nebraska, Messra Swenk and Cockerell say that a comparison of cotypes of Panurginus nebrascensis with specimens of P. ornatipes shows that the two are synonyms and that P. boylei is a subspecies. The types of all of the involved species being in the collections of the U.S. National Museum has led to a re-examination of them and the characters given show them to be abundantly distinct. In view of these characters, what Messrs. Swenck and Cockerell has under the name ornatipes is somewhat of a mystery.

This contribution to our knowledge of the sub-family Scoliinae (digger wasps) found in North America, Central America and the West Indies, is the result of work done at the Massachusetts Agricultural College under the direct supervision of Doctor H. T. Fernald, and forms a portion of a thesis for the degree of doctor of philosophy. In it, an attempt has been made to place before those interested, a paper in which our present knowledge of these wasps is systematically arranged and the identification of the species facilitated.
