Bulletin No. 132 - Minor Dry Land Crops At The Nephi Experiment Farm, P. V. Cardon

The investigations conducted at the Nephi substation deal primarily with cereals; other crops, such as alfalfa, peas, corn, potatoes, etc., have occupied only a secondary position in the work of this station. This necessarily has been true because the experiments are confined to dry-land practices, and the cereals unquestionably comprise the basal crops for dry-land farming as it is now understood and practiced in Utah. No crops have been found as yet which yield so profitably on the dry lands as do the cereals, especially winter varieties.

Die kleinen schwarzen Halictus-Arten bereiten dem Systematiker viele Schwierigkeit und lassen sich nur bei ausreichendem Material und durch genaue Untersuchung sicher erkennen. Eine reichaltige Sammlung von Apiden, die ich von meinem Freunde A. Moschler in Rossitten zur Bestimmung bekam, entheilt eine grofsere Anzahl der kleinsten Halictus-Arten. Diese bieten mir die gunstige Gelegenheit, den H. minutissimus und die ihm am nachsten stehenden Arten klarzustellen.

Von den Herren Dr. H. Brauns in Willowmore, Kapland, und Dr. J. Bequaert in Brugge, Belgien, erhielt ich eine grofsere Anzahl afrikanischer Prosopis-Arten, welche von don genannten beiden Forschern in Kapland, beziehungsweise in Belgisch-Kongo, sowie von Henn G. ArnoId in Rhodesia gesammelt wurden. Einige dieser Arten wurden von H. Friese im Archiv fur Naturgesch. 1911, p. 120-134, andere in dieser Zeitschrift, 1913, p. 573-574 sehr kurz, und in den Zool. Jahrb. v. 35, p. 582-584, 1913 ausfuhrlicher beschrieben. Freund Friese war so freundlich, mir die Typen der von ihm aufgestellten Arten zu leiben, so dafs ich das mir vorliegende Material …

Andrena nudigastra n. sp. 10-10.5 mm Lg. Ausserordentlich nahe mit A. humilis lmh. verwandt, der Korper aber starker glanzend und weniger behaart und der Hinterleib breiter und flacher. -Mesonotum, Schildchen und Hinterchildchen fast kahl oder sehr dunn gelbgrau behaart (bei A. humilis ziemlich dicht mit abstehenden schmutziggrauen Haaren besetzt). Hinterleibsring 1 vor dem niedergedruckten Endrande unbehaart (bei A. humilis dort mit einer Reihe abstehender nach hinten gerichteter liaare). Die Ubrigen Hinterleibsringe tragen seitlich am niedergedrlickten Endrande nur einige wenige Wimperharchen, bei A. humilis dagegen deutlich bindenartig auftretcnde Wimperhaare. As noted In Bulletin 124, the Southern Utah Experiment Farm is located in Washington Field, southeast of St. George. This tract of land is comparatively low and flat and bounded on three sides by hills. On the front or north side it extends to the Rio Virgin river, which enters and leaves the valley through small canyons. This entire area has a very poor water and air drainage. Frosts occur here much more severely and much later than on the surrounding bench land.

Spraying experiments against the codling moth were carried on upon the Smart orchard until the number of worms per tree was reduced to such an extent that no accurate comparisons could be made between different treatments. As a result of the work on this and other orchards, practically every commercial orchard in the valley was by this time well sprayed and the worms reduced to a point where one driving spray per season would keep them under control.

In the meantime a number of questions arose which required very wormy conditions to adequately investigate. Search was therefore made for orchards …

While collecting Ichneumonoidea in New Brunswick, Mr. A. Gordon Leavitt also collected a number of other Hyrnenoptera, and below is given a report on most of the Apoidea. Some of the material, mostly Megachilinae, Sphecodes and male Halictus, has not been identified, and is not included. A few of the determinations were made by Mr. H . L. In most sections of the State three crops of alfalfa hay are harvested. There is a widespread opinion among practical feeders in this locality that these crops of hay are not of equal value for feeding purposes. Especially is this true when feeding dairy cows is considered. The belief is so strong in some cases that farmers have said they would exchange three tons of second crop hay for two of first crop when feeding milk cows. Third crop hay is given second choice.
