Als Type für die ab. interrupta hat dann die Figur Romanoff's in Rom. Mem. Lep. 1. (1884) pi. IV, f. 4 zu gelten.

Experimental work in breeding for egg production was started with this flock of Single Comb White Leghorns in 1907. The flock of 1907 was hatched from eggs from a small flock that had been introduced into the plant two or three years before.

After two years' records of these flocks had been completed and studied it was found that nearly three-fourths of the first flock had made better records the second year than they did the first and that there was a great variation in the two years' records of individual hens. In many arid sections of Western America there have been reported marked accumulations of nitrates in the cultivated soil. Hilgard,(1) who was the first to observe these accumulations, believed that the nitrates are being formed at the present time by the rapid nitrification of the organic matter contained in the soil. In Colorado there has been considerable trouble with orchards dying; the death of the trees in some cases has been attributed to the excessive accumulations of nitrates in the cultivated soil. The corn plant also offers an excellent field for scientific investigation independent of any economic bearing.

Table No. 1 shows the number of licensed stallions and jacks of each breed in each county of the State. It will be seen that 439 licenses have been issued. Of these 92 are grades, which means that 79 per cent of all the licensed animals of the State are purebred. Cache County leads with 59 licensed animals, including 8 grades. Sevier County stands second with 51, including 8 grade animals. Sanpete County has 43 licensed animals, including 10 grades. Utah County has 44, two of which are grades. The number of varieties of practically all the field crops is now very great, and is increasing every year. Each variety has certain growers who believe in it and who do what they can to make it more widely grown. As a result many varieties of crops are found in most every farming community.
