It is almost universal history that in farming a newly developed region no attention whatever is paid to maintaining the fertility of the soil. This is natural for two very obvious reasons. In the first place the pioneer has other and more pressing problems in the "subduing" of the new land, and in the second place such virgin soils are generally blessed with a great abundance of native fertility. New lands in an arid or semiarid region are usually especially fertile because they represent a long-time accumulation of fertility which is not possible under humid conditions. Since in a humid …

The data presented in this thesis are the results obtained from a study of the F₂ and F₃ generations from a cross between the wheat varieties, Dicklow and Hard Federation. Toward the end of the summer of 1922 this problem was assigned to me by Professor George Stewart. The plants then growing in the field were in the F₂ generation, the cross having been made in 1920 by Professor Stewart. The dire consequences of nematode invasion have been graphically depicted by Spiegler (1907), who says, the beet industry was at its heyday during the seventies. Nor satisfied with the land already in cultivation, the farmer plowed fertile lands along the border of the streams, wherein to grow beets, obtaining in some cases of 20 to 27 tons an acre.

There are many groups of insects in Utah that have not been touched in a systematic way up to the present time, and to the knowledge of the author no systematic work has been done on the homopterous family Aphididae.

Due to the very common occurrence of the aphids, or plant lice, and the need for a simple key that would aid in the determination of these insects, this work was commenced in June 1923, continuous work being carried on in collecting, determining, drawing and describing, up to the present time.

The purpose of this report is to investigate the feasibility of irrigating the lands of the Cache Valley Water Conservation District No. 1. The district, as it now stands, is very much in need of many improvements. The Main canals are now in use and are in a good condition to serve all the lands with the required amount of water, but the few laterals that are now constructed, are in a poor condition, with the remaining laterals yet to be finished.

The results presented in this paper are from data accumulated by a study of the F3 generation of a cross between the two varieties, Sevier and New Zealand wheat. This cross was made during the summer of 1920 by Professor George Stewart with the object of combining the high-yielding power of Sevier with the strong straw of New Zealand. In the fall of 1922 the problem was assigned to me, at which time I selected about 150 superior plants, possessing the desired characteristics, at least so far as appearance was concerned. Two methods of crop improvement are open to the plant breeder. Pure-line selection, which might be mentioned first, deals with the natural variability in plant populations. Thru selection, isolation, and comparative yield tests superior individuals are located. Nothing, however, can be added which the plant does not already have. Here hybridization provides a new starting point. Increased variation, new combination of characters, and thus greater opportunities are provided for improvement. The present investigation has for its purpose a study of the latter phase of this subject.

Inheritance Studies In Kanred X Martin And In G-149 X Ridit, Myron T. Hansen

The studies here reported involve two crosses, one of which was between a pure line of Kanred and a pure line of Martin from a bunt resistant selection. The other was between a pure line of G-149, a rust-resistant segregate from Sevier x Dicklow, and a pure line of Ridit. These were both economic breeding projects made in an effort to combine the good commercial qualities of Kanred and G-149 with the high bunt resistance of Martin and Ridit, respectively.

The development of artesian and pumped wells as a source of irrigation water has created the need for a measuring device which will be accurate for small discharges. The thin edged weir has been accepted as one of the most accurate and desirable measuring devices for this work. Three types of weirs are now commonly used: the Rectangular, the Cipolleti, and the Triangular Notch weir. Of these types the triangular notch is probably best suited for small discharges (under 3 second feet). The various formulae for discharge over 90% Triangular weirs have been accurately determined for heads over two tenths …
