Bulletin No. 212 - Studies On The Morphology Of The Beet Leafhopper, G. F. Knowlton Jul 1929

Bulletin No. 212 - Studies On The Morphology Of The Beet Leafhopper, G. F. Knowlton

UAES Bulletins

The beet leafhopper, Eutettix tenellus (Baker), is one of the most serious insect pests of western North America. Its chief importance is as a vector of the plant disease curly-top, which it transmits to beets, tomatoes, beans, melons, and many other agricultural plants. The virus apparently is introduced into the plant during the process of feeding, and is responsible for the frequent and often enormous losses to the sugar-beet growers and sugar manufacturers of the west. Apparently, the virus multiplies and remains active in the body of a leafhopper for some time, making it possible for the insect, after once …

Bulletin No. 213 - Food Habits Of Utah Farm Families, Almeda Perry Brown Jul 1929

Bulletin No. 213 - Food Habits Of Utah Farm Families, Almeda Perry Brown

UAES Bulletins

This report is merely an attempt to set forth the findings of the investigation without making claim to their being conclusive except for the families included in the study. While the study was carried into a relatively large portion of the state, the records are too few in number for any claim to be made that they represent community food conditions. It is believed, however, that the records which form the basis of this report are representative of the food situation in the homes from which they come.

Bulletin No. 211 - Silage Corn Varieties For Utah, George Stewart, A. L. Wilson Jun 1929

Bulletin No. 211 - Silage Corn Varieties For Utah, George Stewart, A. L. Wilson

UAES Bulletins

Utah is rapidly developing an important dairy industry. In addition to homegrown hay and grain, there must be some form of succulence. Pasturage is the common way of furnishing fresh feed in summer. In certain regions, silage and beet pulp are the winter forms. With a scarcity of beet pulp, silage corn is likely to be an important crop in the Great Salt Lake and Utah Lake Valleys, where corn does well. The data presented in this publication are related to the choice of a corn variety for ensilage.

Circular No. 77 - Measurement Of Irrigation Water, George D. Clyde Jun 1929

Circular No. 77 - Measurement Of Irrigation Water, George D. Clyde

UAES Circulars

Water is the limiting factor in Utah's agricultural development. In spite of its admitted value the farmer knows less about the measurement of water than about any of the other commodities which he handles. He knows how to measure his land, his crops and his cattle, but he has little conception of how to measure his most valuable asset, viz., irrigation water. The importance of water measurement is not appreciated until the water-supply becomes over-appropriated and users begin interfering with each other's rights. Expensive litigation, which always follow controversies over water, is gradually convincing the farmer that water should be …

Bulletin No. 210 - The Mineral Content Of Grains, J. E. Greaves, C. T. Hirst May 1929

Bulletin No. 210 - The Mineral Content Of Grains, J. E. Greaves, C. T. Hirst

UAES Bulletins

It is generally recognized that shrunken, frosted, or smutty grain is inferior to sound, clean, plump grain. Much has been done on the protein content of grain, and the best millers today purchase grain for its protein content. Few give any consideration to its minerals. Yet do two bushels of sound, plump, clean grain of known protein content grown under the same or different conditions, have the same mineral content? If not, it is of importance to both the producer and consumer: to the consumer because it governs the nutritive value of the product; to the producer because it represents …

The Relation Of The Bean Thrips Heliothrips Fasciatus Pergande To The Non-Setting Of Fruit, Clifton H. Smith May 1929

The Relation Of The Bean Thrips Heliothrips Fasciatus Pergande To The Non-Setting Of Fruit, Clifton H. Smith

Biology

The great losses in bean production in the vicinity of Logan during the summer of 1928, brought about an investigation as to the cause for such losses. In some fields there was a total loss of the crop while in others the injury was less severe. An examination of the infested plants showed that the flowers had withered and fallen, and the leaves were drying up and would fall at the slightest touch. This condition was uncommon in this region and its cause unknown. However, it was noted that on plants where this condition occurred numerous small thrips were present …

The Growth And Development Of Ephestia Kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera) And Tribolium Confusum Duval (Coleoptera) Under Controlled Conditions Of Temperature And Relative Humidity, Tom A. Brindley May 1929

The Growth And Development Of Ephestia Kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera) And Tribolium Confusum Duval (Coleoptera) Under Controlled Conditions Of Temperature And Relative Humidity, Tom A. Brindley

Biology

The confused flour beetle (Tribolium confusum Duval) and Mediterranean flour moth (Ephestia kuehniella Zeller) have long been recorded as serious pests of stored grain products (Riley. 1839, Chittenden 1896). In recent years they have served as very valuable material for laboratory experiments on insect nutrition (Chapman 1924, Richardson 1926). In spite of the economic and scientiric importance of these two insects the writer could find little detailed information on their growth and development under carefully controlled conditions of temperature and relative hunidity, on a normal whole weat diet. This investigation is a study of the growth and development …

Bionomics Of The Clover Leaf Weevil, Hypera Punctata (Fabr.), In Utah, Lorin C. Fife May 1929

Bionomics Of The Clover Leaf Weevil, Hypera Punctata (Fabr.), In Utah, Lorin C. Fife

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Clover Leaf Weevil, Hypera punctata (Fabr.),* is a foreign pest introduced from Europe into New York, which first became noticeable in 1881. The insect has rapidly spread westward reaching Utah at least by 1912. Since this time several out-breaks have occured. In 1927 the injury to alfalfa, Medicago sativa, was severe in limited areas in Hooper, Weber County, and in 1927 and 1928 the infestation was very pronounced in certain parts of Salt Lake City.

Municipal Lighting Of Logan City, Maya M. Fonnesbeck May 1929

Municipal Lighting Of Logan City, Maya M. Fonnesbeck

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Municipal lighting in Logan City is a contemporary development of municipal lighting in other American cities, because it has involved public opinion and lawsuits and competition between a private corporation and a municipality owning and operating an electric light plant. It is perhaps one of the most eventful and serious conflicts between owners of a public utility which has come before public and legal observation in the State of Utah. The case of Logan City vs. Utah Power & Light Company was brought before the Utah State Utilities Commission and the Utah State Supreme Court and the Court decided that …

A Study Of The Financial Considerations, Offered Teachers Of Utah, As Inducement For Professional Growth With Comparisons Drawn From Some Other States, Alvin Hess May 1929

A Study Of The Financial Considerations, Offered Teachers Of Utah, As Inducement For Professional Growth With Comparisons Drawn From Some Other States, Alvin Hess

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Much has been written on the subject of supervision and the improvement of teaching. It is the general opinion of authors on this subject that it is a much better procedure to retain the services of competent teachers over long tenure than to follow any of the uneconomical plans of adapting large numbers of new teachers to the task of establishing the necessary teacher-pupil contacts for successful learning. But, of course, these authors do not suggest long tenure without active improvement of teachers while in service. Tenure laws are of such importance in some states as to take the form …
