Bulletin No. 347 - The Life History And Management Of The Mountain Whitefish Prosopium Williamsoni (Girard) In Logan River Utah, William F. Sigler
UAES Bulletins
In 1948 a comprehensive fishery investigation on Logan River was initiated by the Department of Wildlife Management, Utah State Agricultural College, and the Utah Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit. Three masters' theses have been completed on life histories and populations to date (Thoreson, 1949; Fleener, 1950; Pechacek, 1950). One phase of this investigation is a study of the mountain whitefish Prosopium williamsoni (Girard).
Life History Studies Of The Snipe Fly Atherix Variegata Walker, Wallace P. Murdoch
Life History Studies Of The Snipe Fly Atherix Variegata Walker, Wallace P. Murdoch
Biology
Atherix variegata Walker is a snipe fly (family Rhagionidae) of the Nearctic region associated with rapid streams in mountainous or semi-mountainous areas. Naturalists and sportsmen have frequently expressed interest in the large masses of eggs and females which can be readily observed in early summer on the undersides of bridges and on rocks and branches overhanging water. As one reads the fragmentary accounts of the biology of snipe flies it becomes apparent that a need for life history studies exists for most genera of this family. Although the life history of Atherix variegata is better known than that of many …

The Relationship Between Antibody Titer And Resistance To Staphylococcal Synovitis, Keith Mckay Budge
Biology
The turkey industry is one of the major agricultural pursuits in the state of Utah. Synovitis is one of the most costly diseases in the turkey industry and causes considerable economic loss to the growers. Although much research has been done on synovitis, little is known of the serology of the disease. This paper consists of a study of antibody titer by use of complement fixation and agglutination tests during the course of vaccination of turkeys, as related to survival, crippling, and death. A field study of twenty birds is reported to show the relationship of antibody titer of apparently …

A Brief Survey Of Biotic Distribution And Its Physical Environment In A Transect Across Yosemite Valley, California, Wayne W. Bryant
Biology
Yosemite Valley, though famed for its scenic beauty and geologic history, is also of outstanding biological interest, especially to nature-lovers and scientists. A favorable climate produces a vast variety of life forms. The varied physiography of the area effects a great diversity of plant communities and vertebrate animal habitats. The number of plant and vertebrate animal species is particularly large for so small an area. The distribution of these species should reflect both general and local environmental conditions. In this paper it is the endeavor of the writer to (1) survey briefly the distribution of plants and vertebrate animals within …

Soil Nitrate, Total Nitrogen And Organic Matter In Relation To Dry-Farming, Krishnappa Ramaiah
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Dry farming has been defined as production of useful crops, without irrigation, on lands that receive an annual precipitation of 20 inches or less. In some regions the term dry farming is applied to farming without irrigation under annual precipitation of 30 inches or less. Although there is no sharp demarkation between dry farming and humid farming, the term dry farming always means farming under difficulties due to limited annual rainfall.

In about half of the angiosperm species the gamete chromosome number is a multiple of that found in some related species. This and the fact that polyploidy has such a pronounced effect on plant physiology and growth, as pointed out by Noggle, serve only to emphasize the importance of understanding more about polyploid genetics.
Varietal Response In Alfalfa For Seed Production As Affected By Lygus Infestation And Related Factors, A. Glenn Wahlquist
Varietal Response In Alfalfa For Seed Production As Affected By Lygus Infestation And Related Factors, A. Glenn Wahlquist
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Alfalfa is one of the most valuable of our forage crops. A dependable source of seed is therefore a primary essential to the success of our present system of agriculture. More than 70 million pounds of alfalfa seed are required each year in the United States to maintain the present hay and pasture acreage of this crop; and the annual demand for seed would increase to more than 100 million pounds if the acreage were expanded to the extent recommended for soil conservation and a balanced agricultural security.
A Population Study Of The South Cache Elk Herd, Roger James Mccormack
A Population Study Of The South Cache Elk Herd, Roger James Mccormack
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Elk, because of their wide ranging habit and frequently inaccessible habitat, are among our least known big game animals. As a result the management of elk herds has been handicapped by a lack of essential information. Population numbers remain unknown, ranges undefined, and decimating factors unevaluated to cite but three conditions which hamper efficient management on a long range basis.

Academic Mortality And Survival Of Students Of The Freshman Class Of 1946 Through Senior Year 1950 At The Utah State Agricultural College, Marvin T. Bell
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In the vernacular of higher education, withdrawal from college before graduation is known as student mortality. Staying for the full course of study is called survival. "Students and their parents so often fix their attention on the business of gaining admission to college that they fall into the easy error of thinking that a degree will automatically follow from the allotted time spent there. The fact is that, on average, half of the class will have fallen by the wayside."
This study is not an attempt to set down the reason for the student mortality at the Utah State Agricultural …
An Evaluation Of Necessary Elements For Desirable Industrial Arts Instruction In The Elementary Schools Of Utah, Lee W. Ralphs
An Evaluation Of Necessary Elements For Desirable Industrial Arts Instruction In The Elementary Schools Of Utah, Lee W. Ralphs
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
An essential part of the elementary school curriculum is the creative activity program connected with it. Educators believe that the fullest development of the child can best be attained through a program which provides a series of well selected experiences and activities. At present education considers the whole child--his abilities, needs, and interests--as vital factors in the development of a good curriculum, instead of merely the concrete and formal subject matter. Recently there has been an expressed view, by administrators of elementary school systems and many authorities and industrial arts teachers, that there is a definite need for formulating an …

Canal Seepage Loss Investigations In The Lewiston Area, Utah, Robert V. Thurmond
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
With population, industry, and irrigation ever increasing in the arid west, there arises new and greater demands for water. Much of the water now urgently needed is lost as seepage from the many miles of canals in the western states.
Rohwer and Stout (18) have estimated that in the western states from one-third to one-half of the water diverted for irrigation is lost before it reaches the farmers' fields. Of these losses, seepage probably accounts for the greatest loss. It is reported by the Bureau of Reclamation (14) that, of the 14,600,000 acre feet of water diverted on 36 projects …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The first organized program in physical education appeared in American colleges at the University of Virginia between the years 1850 and 1860. The first public school program appeared somewhat later. Since these beginnings, school and college programs have advanced steadily, keeping pace with our advancement in the philosophy of education and biological science. At the present time, almost all schools include physical education as an element in the curriculum.
Inheritance Of 16 Barley Characters And Their Linkage Relationships, Tejpal Singh Gill
Inheritance Of 16 Barley Characters And Their Linkage Relationships, Tejpal Singh Gill
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The assignment of genetic factors to definite loci in the hereditary mechanism has been a great step in the progress of biology. Of the cereal crops, barley (Hordeum sp.), a crop of economic importance, offers a superior opportunity for genetic studies. Its adaptation to wide varieties of conditions, with a wealth of easily differentiated characters and only seven pairs of chromosomes, the barley plant provides excellent material for linkage studies.
Although there is a vast amount of literature dealing with inheritance in barley, yet knowledge of the subject is still very limited. The mode of inheritance of about one hundred …
