Diseases which in the sixteenth century were found to be related to a deficiency of some substance in the natural foods consumed in the diet were later known as deficiency diseases. As early as 1881, Lunin found that rats could not live on a purified diet of carbohydrate, fat, protein and minerals, but could exist on a diet supplemented with certain natural foods. These findings were found to be in agreement with records of early descriptions of deficiency diseases. Scurvy was recognized very early in voyages made across oceans where ships had no means of being re-provisioned. Progress was very …

The Effect Of Feeding Sucrose To Beef And Swine On The Percentage Of Carbohydrate, Ph, Color, Texture, And Flavor Of Muscle And Liver, Margaret B. Merkley
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Carbohydrates have long been a part of animal feeding rations. Grains are included in all animal feeding formulas. The by-products of sugar beets have been used for many years in livestock feeding (Kutish 1950b). The use of molasses in commercial feed mixes in 1899 made possible its extended use in animal feeding practices (Hall 1950).
Protein feeds for cattle are relatively high in price and not available in adequate supply. With these facts in mind Culbertson of Iowa State College set up experiments in 1950 to find out whether part or all of the protein supplement could be replaced with …
Marketing Of Chickens In Utah, Glen Downs
Marketing Of Chickens In Utah, Glen Downs
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Chickens and eggs rank fourth among the farm enterprises in Utah as a source of farm cash receipts. In 1949 about 21 million dollars of cash receipts were received from sales of chickens and eggs which represented 13.2 percent of total receipts from farm marketings (table 1). In the same year 17.7 percent of total receipts were derived from cattle and calves, the largest enterprise. Receipts from dairy products represented 15 percent and sheep, lambs, and wool 13.8 percent.
Receipts from chickens and eggs have increased in comparison with other enterprises since 1924. In that year only 5 percent of …

Geology Of The Mink Creek Region, Idaho, Allen S. Keller
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Mink Creek region is centered 14 miles northeast of Preston in Franklin County, Idaho (see Index Map, Figure 1). The area of this report comprises approximately 70 square miles. It is bounded on the north and south by parallels 42°17' and 42°11' North Latitude and on the east and west by meridians 111°37' and 111°49'. The easternmost part of the area is located in the Bear River Range and is part of the Cache National Forest.
The region is readily accessible. A paved Idaho State Highway goes through the center of the area and State Highway 34 skirts the …
A Comparative Study Of Raw, Pasteurized, And Hydrogen Peroxide Treated Milk In The Production Of Swiss Cheese, John Darold Johnson
A Comparative Study Of Raw, Pasteurized, And Hydrogen Peroxide Treated Milk In The Production Of Swiss Cheese, John Darold Johnson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
At the present time the Swiss cheese making process is a prolonged one requiring several operations and considerable space. The cheese is made in wheels weighing approximately 200 pounds and is covered by a thick rind. There is considerable waste in cutting these large wheels to fit the present merchandising methods.
The Discharge Coefficient In The Coordinate Method For Measuring Pipe Flow, Day L. Bassett
The Discharge Coefficient In The Coordinate Method For Measuring Pipe Flow, Day L. Bassett
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Agriculture, industry, and community life continue to impose great demands upon available sources of water, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Efficient utilization of water, demanding careful distribution and use, implies flow measurement.
The coordinate method for measuring pipe flow finds some application in industry where estimates must be made of the flow of fluids containing relatively large amounts of suspended solids that would render other measuring devices ineffective. Widest application may be found, however, in agriculture where a simple, quick, and inexpensive means for estimating well flow, pump discharge, drain efflux, etc., is necessary if the farmers are to …

The Occurrence And Seasonal Activity Of Vertebrates In The Norris And Gibbon Geyser Basins Of Yellowstone National Park, Merrill David Beal
Biology
Studies upon which this paper was based were made during 1950-51. Daily field observations were made during the summer months, and periodic visits were made during the spring and fall. It was found that all of the vertebrates which inhabit the general locality of the study area were also to be found in the areas of hydrothermal activity These included five species of fishes, two species of amphibians, two species of reptiles, fifty-two species of birds, and thirty species of mammals. Many vertebrates were found to benefit from the secondary influences of thermal waters, which keep streams from freezing in …

Bulletin No. 346 - Irrigation Waters Of Utah, J. P. Thorne, D. W. Thorne
Bulletin No. 346 - Irrigation Waters Of Utah, J. P. Thorne, D. W. Thorne
UAES Bulletins
Irrigation waters are never pure. All contain some dissolved salts. The amount may vary from a trace to concentrations so great that the water is unfit for use. The kind of salt in irrigation water may be even more important than the total amount. Borates in extremely low quantities, for example, may injure or kill crop plants. If the proportion of sodium in irrigation water is high, the soil may be gradually rendered unproductive. On the other hand, the salts may consist in part of essential plant nutrients or other helpful salts that aid in keeping soils productive.

Bulletin No. 348 - Cost And Efficiency Of Producing Canning Corn In Cache County, Utah, 1949, Earnest M. Morrison, Willis G. Kearl
UAES Bulletins
The canning corn enterprise is becoming increasingly important to the farmers of Utah. For two decades prior to 1940, the acreage used in canning corn production varied between 400 and 800 acres; however, it has increased from 600 acres in 1942 to 6,300 acres in 1949. This increase has been larger, both in percentage and in absolute amount, than for any other intertilled or orchard crop in the state during the same period of time. In 1949 the farm value of canning corn sold was $567,000. Peas and tomatoes were the only canning crops which exceeded it in value.

Bulletin No. 349 - Management Of Irrigation And Drainage Enterprises In Utah: With Special Reference To The Northern Cache Valley Area, J. Howard Maughan, O. W. Israelsen
UAES Bulletins
The purposes of this study on the management of irrigation and drainage enterprises in northern Cache Valley, Utah, are to assist farmers in the area and in other similar areas to learn the causes of their irrigation and drainage problems and to determine the best approach toward their solution. The bulletin first presents some of the general problems connected with irrigation and drainage organizations, and then discusses the problems of the local area, known as the Cub River area.
