Nectar Sugar Concentration As A Measure Of Pollination Of Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa L.), William P. Nye, M. W. Pedersen Jan 1962

Nectar Sugar Concentration As A Measure Of Pollination Of Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa L.), William P. Nye, M. W. Pedersen

All PIRU Publications

The "visitation rate of honeybees on alfalfa may possibly be measured by determining the sugar concentration of nectar in the honey stomachs of foraging bees. This concentration is shown to be largely controlled by the relative humidity and the time available for nectar evaporation in the alfalfa blossom, which in turn depends on the rate of visitation by honeybees. An adjustment for relative humidity may be necessary in order to compare readings widely separated in time or location. Where conditions are relatively constant from day to day, it may be sufficient to measure the nectar sugar concentration and relative humidity …

Management Of Honeybee Colonies For Pollination In Cages, William P. Nye Jan 1962

Management Of Honeybee Colonies For Pollination In Cages, William P. Nye

All PIRU Publications

The use of bees for pollination is extending in various directions, and each extension brings with it new problems to be solved. Infields and orchards, the main problem may be to get the bees to visit all the flowers. In a small plot, this can be ensured by enclosing the plot and a hive of bees in a cage, but special steps are then needed to ensure the well-being of the bees. In this article Mr. Nye, who is on the staff of the Entomology Research Division of the United States Department of Agriculture, describes the colony management necessary. The …

A Matrix Formulation Of The Least-Squares Method And Its Application To Nuclear Decay Schemes, Otto Harry Otteson Jan 1962

A Matrix Formulation Of The Least-Squares Method And Its Application To Nuclear Decay Schemes, Otto Harry Otteson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many people call physics an ''exact science". This may be true depending on our definition of exact. Most dictionaries include as a definition of exact the words "strictly accurate". The average man thinks of an "exact science" as one which yields "strictly accurate'' results. Physics then is exact only to a degree.

Water Requirements For Waterfowl Areas Near The Great Salt Lake Parts V-Vi, J. E. Christainsen, Ming Chang Tsai, D. K. Kaushik, J. B. Law, J. W. Teeter

Reports

This report reviews activities on this project since the Progress Report, Part IV, June 1961.

The summer of 1961 has been one of the driest on record for Ogden Bay and Howard Slough Refuge. The extreme shortage of irrigation water has resulted in very little flow in the Howard Slough which originates from return flow. The available water from the Weber River for the Ogden Bay Refuge was also the lowest on record. The scarcity of water at these two refuges has resulted in increased salinity.

Most of the routine work on the project during the summer was done by …

In addition to the agricultural phases, this report deals with the impacts of the project on the national forests and the relationship of watershed conditions to the project.

This report also is intended to aid the Bureau of Reclamation in developing their Definite Plan Report, and to provide …

The Comparison Of Bacteriophage Sensitivity Of Staphylococcal Isolates From Turkeys, Turkey Processors, And Dairy Workers, Daryl Eugene Peterson May 1961

The Comparison Of Bacteriophage Sensitivity Of Staphylococcal Isolates From Turkeys, Turkey Processors, And Dairy Workers, Daryl Eugene Peterson

Biology

There have been several surveys made throughout the State of Utah that indicate the presence of staphylococcal synovitis in many of the turkey flocks. Bagley (1949) and Blommer (1950) indicated that from 1947 to 1949, there was a widespread occurrence of the disease throughout the State. Dr. M. L. Miner (1960), Head of the Department of Veterinary Science (Utah State University), indicated that staphylococcal synovitis in turkeys has actually been continuous in Utah since the late nineteen-"thirties." Staphylococcus aureus was found by Prahl (1891) to be the etiologic agent of this synovitis in geese. Synovitis may occur in many other …

Population Structure Of Peromyscus Maniculatus In Two Areas In Green Canyon, Cache County, Utah, John O. Sullivan May 1961

Population Structure Of Peromyscus Maniculatus In Two Areas In Green Canyon, Cache County, Utah, John O. Sullivan

Biology

Mammalogists in recent years have demonstrated an increased interest in the population dynamics of small mammals. Many small mammals are nocturnal and consequently are difficult to observe directly. A technique of live-trapping and marking is the most feasible method of studying such animals (Blair 1942; Calhoun and Casby, 1958). This permits the consideration of individual animals. The recognition of individuals contributed to the development of other techniques used in the interpretation of small mammal populations. The "home range" concept discussed by Burt (1943) and Stickel (1954) and the "center of activity" method as described by Hayne (1949) also contribute to …

The Morphology And Cultural Characteristics Of Bovine Cecal Trichomonads, Emron A. Jensen May 1961

The Morphology And Cultural Characteristics Of Bovine Cecal Trichomonads, Emron A. Jensen

Biology

No extensive investigation has been made of the trichomonads living in the cecum of cattle. Two species of trichomonads found in the intestinal tract of cattle have been described. Trichomonas bovis was described by Pavlov and Dimitrov (22). Trichomonas enteris was described by Christl (5). The descriptions given were not complete in that no mention of parabasal bodies was made and specimens stained by methods other than iron-hematoxylin were not described.

Hormone Content Of Subcellular Fractions Of Beef Anterior Pituitary Tissue, D. Reed Jensen May 1961

Hormone Content Of Subcellular Fractions Of Beef Anterior Pituitary Tissue, D. Reed Jensen

Biology

For some time the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland has been known to occupy a commanding position in the hierarchy of the endocrine system, and consequently has been the focus of intensive investigation. Subsequent to progress in the cytological identification of cell types in the anterior lobe, and with the knowledge that various hormones are released by the anterior lobe, it became the ambition of investigators to determine the cellular site of each hormone. The concensus was that the physiology of the gland could not be fully understood unless a relation was established between its cellular morphology and the …

The Behavior Of Certain Genes Associated With Tumorous Head In Laboratory Populations Of Drosophila Melanogaster, William D. Berseth May 1961

The Behavior Of Certain Genes Associated With Tumorous Head In Laboratory Populations Of Drosophila Melanogaster, William D. Berseth

Biology

The tumorous head trait first appeared in a stock of flies maintained at the University of Texas which had previously been collected at Ocahuizolta, Mexico. The tumorous head trait is evidently deleterious to the individual expressing it so it was not evident if the trait would continue to be expressed if it was not selected for. Later investigations indicated that alleles of the tumorous head trait were uniformly absent in some and present in other "wild" laboratory stocks. Different alleles had varying effects on the percentage of expression of the trait. It was not known why alleles of the trait …

The Semantics Of Stress And Pitch In English, George A. Meyer May 1961

The Semantics Of Stress And Pitch In English, George A. Meyer

Faculty Honor Lectures

Have your ears, not to mention your sensibilities, and your reverence for long established familiar rhythms and meanings been quite rudely jolted?

If each individual present here were to read these well-known lines from the printed page, or recite them from memory, I'm sure that you would, in each case, almost invariably reproduce them with the same stress, pitch, and rhythm patterns. There is comfort and relaxation of mind in rolling out the familiar phrases, with the stresses, relaxation from stress, and variations in pitch, that make them full of meaning.

Contrariwise, when you heard them spoken as I read …
