Canada Goose Production And Population Stability, Ogden Bay Waterfowl Management Area, Utah, Norman H. Dey
Canada Goose Production And Population Stability, Ogden Bay Waterfowl Management Area, Utah, Norman H. Dey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Since the development of Ogden Bay Waterfowl Management Area in 1937, the Canada goose (Branta canadesis moffitti) population increased to a peak in 1949 and then declined slightly. Nelson (1954) noted that the decrease in population was probably due to either a change in habitat or increased hunting pressure. In recent years, direct band returns have indicated a high mortality rate in the population. This project was initiated to determine the relative stability of the Canada goose population and to measure, as closely as possible, the effect of a high mortality rate upon the nesting population.

Effects Of Temperature On Moisture Conductivity In Unsaturated Soil, Richard O'Bannon Meeuwig
Effects Of Temperature On Moisture Conductivity In Unsaturated Soil, Richard O'Bannon Meeuwig
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Water moves in soil in response to potential gradients. The basic equation for this movement is the generalized v=-K▽Φ in which v is volume of water passing through a unit area in unit time, K is the conductivity coefficient, ▽, is the gradient operator (vector), and ▽Φ is the potential gradient.
Estimation Of Optimum Size, Shape, And Replicate Number Of Safflower Plots For Yield Trials, David Ernest Polson
Estimation Of Optimum Size, Shape, And Replicate Number Of Safflower Plots For Yield Trials, David Ernest Polson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The success of a breeding program depends upon the ability of the plant breeder to not only develop new lines, but also to determine which lines or varieties are superior. For this purpose, yield trials are an important yardstick for determining the value of the trial in assessing the merits of the different lines.
Variation encountered is due to several factors; with true genetic differences, environment, and human error being of major importance. In order for yield trials to give meaningful information on a line or variety, it is essential that variation due to human error and environment be reduced …
Morphology, Fertility, And Cytology Of Diploid And Colchicine-Induced Tetraploid Fairway Crested Wheatgrass, William Tai
Morphology, Fertility, And Cytology Of Diploid And Colchicine-Induced Tetraploid Fairway Crested Wheatgrass, William Tai
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Fairway crested wheatgrass, which is identified taxonomically as Agropyron cristatum (L.) Gaertn. (45), A. cristatiforme (38), or A. pectiniforme Roem. and Schult (22), is an economically important range grass belonging to the "crested wheatgrass complex" (24, 38). The crested wheatgrass complex includes diploid, 2n = 14, tetraploid, 2n = 28, and hexaploid, 2n = 42, forms (1, 11, 22). The variety Fairway and Fairway-like derivatives are the only known diploid members of the species complex (24, 38). Meiotic chromosome behavior of Fairway diploids appears to be typical of other diploid species; however, the number of plants examined …
A Study Of Thailand's Balance Of Trade 1953-1962, Suchin Worawongwasu
A Study Of Thailand's Balance Of Trade 1953-1962, Suchin Worawongwasu
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
International trade theory suggests that trade can be advantageous to the industrial as well as to the underdeveloped countries. For the latter, specialization and exchange brings about an increase in total productions.
Thailand, an underdeveloped country, has for the past decade experienced an unfavorable balance of trade. A primary producing country, Thailand principally exports rice, rubber, tin, and teak. Her principal imports are manufactured goods, machinery and transport equipment, mineral fuels, lubricants and chemicals.
The thesis is intended to investigate the causes of this adverse balance of trade. Thailand's four principal exports accounted for an average of 74.7 percent of …
The Economic Contribution Of The Out-Of-State Student To The Economy Of Utah, Joseph Thomas Markowski
The Economic Contribution Of The Out-Of-State Student To The Economy Of Utah, Joseph Thomas Markowski
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Is the out-of-state college student in Utah paying his own way? Many legislative debates within recent years have centered themselves upon this controversial question without obtaining any definite answers. Articles have been written both pro and con concerning the amount of financial responsibility in higher education that should be assumed by governmental bodies, i.e.: should the state institutions be supported more by taxes or should a greater portion of its costs be covered by student fees with the possible result that fewer students will attend because of higher fees.

An Economic Study Of Adjustment Possibilities In Farm Organization And Resource Allocation In The Sevier River Valley In Piute County, Utah, 1961, Gordon L. Langford
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Problems that confront the farmer are varied, but one of the most important is the combination of his possible enterprises so that maximum financial return from farming is obtained. This problem has been made more important in the last decade by the severity of the agricultural price-cost squeeze.
Farmers' total net income, on a national basis, has declined from more than 16 billion dollars to about 13 billion dollars. In Utah, total net farm income has dropped from 91.3 million dollars in 1951 to 36.5 million dollars in 1961. Average net income of Utah farm operators dropped from $5.89 per …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In 1959 there were 49,006 acres of corn grown in the state of Utah. Included in this were 4,232 acres of grain corn, 38,770 acres of silage corn , and 4,470 acres of sweet corn. The remaining acres of corn were used for pasture, cut as fodder, or any miscellaneous use.
Studies On The Relationship Of Serum Lipids And Dietary Intake Of Fat In Senior Citizens, Lina Wu
Studies On The Relationship Of Serum Lipids And Dietary Intake Of Fat In Senior Citizens, Lina Wu
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A number of research studies have shown that aging is a continuous and cumulative process of biological changes which frequently result in cardiovascular diseases in the older age group. Degenerative diseases of old age such as atherosclerosis and coronary artery diseases appear to be related to abnormal lipid metabolism. The findings which indicate serum cholesterol values rise with age are by no means unanimous. The combined evidence in the literature points out that serum cholesterol of newborn infants is low, then rises steadily with age in both sexes from adolescence through middle age with a higher value in males than …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The movements of salt and water, particularly in fairly dry soils or compacted shales, are important processes in both agronomic studies and hydraulics of deep ground water which is important in the location of oil.
A Study On The Biochemistry Of Riboflavin In Higher Plants As Influenced By Iron, Dayna L. Stocks
A Study On The Biochemistry Of Riboflavin In Higher Plants As Influenced By Iron, Dayna L. Stocks
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Riboflavin, 6,7-dimethyl-9-(D-1'-ribityl) isoalloxazine, has been studied extensively by workers in many fields of interest. Because of its almost universal occurrence in plants and its requirement by most animals as a vitamin, it is of interest to both the botanist and the zoologist. It is also of interest to the photochemist and its photo chemistry is currently being studied by several groups (27, 35, 47, 49). In addition riboflavin has been implicated in the photo inactivation of indole-acetic acid (16) and 2,4-D (20). It is also thought to be involved in the processes of bioluminescence (33, 48) and phototropism (17). At …
Graduate Recital, Scott Gordon Jessop
Graduate Recital, Scott Gordon Jessop
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The writer's presentation of the recital was concerned with improving and demonstrating playing technique on the french horn also introducing some original ensemble compositions to both performers and listeners which might be used by music students. It is the belief of the writer that many qualities of good musicianship can be developed more rapidly through solo and small ensemble performance than through larger organizations because literature can be selected which is more suitable for the capabilities and developmental needs of the individual performer. It is hoped that these ensembles will be useful and worthwhile contributions to the demand for ensemble …
Graduate Recital, Arlan Randall Baird
Graduate Recital, Arlan Randall Baird
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
When the author commenced his Y~ster ' s program in the summer of 1959, it was decided that a lecture-recital project would be more desirable in his case than the alternative procedure of doing original research and writing a thesis . The writer has never regretted the decision, but it must be confessed he felt more than once that a thesis would have been the easier project. (Naturally, those who have written theses do not usually agree with this statement.) In fulfillment of all expectations, and despite the difficulties encountered, or rather because of them, the performance of the recital …
A Study Of Certain Convenience Foods With Reference To Purchaser, Cost, And Nutritive Value, Naomi Jensen
A Study Of Certain Convenience Foods With Reference To Purchaser, Cost, And Nutritive Value, Naomi Jensen
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The various activities associated with the provision of food for feeding of the family traditionally have been functions of the home . One of the major enterprises of the homemaker in past years was to plan , produce or purchase , preserve , and prepare food daily for the family. The role of the homemaker today has changed from one of producer to one of purchaser. Hence, at least weekly, the selection of food at the market place involves not only the best use of her time but wise expenditure of her food budget. The market is changing so rapidly …
School District Reorganization And Consolidation In Cache County, Utah, Grant Richard Bagley
School District Reorganization And Consolidation In Cache County, Utah, Grant Richard Bagley
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A historical study of school organization and school district consolidation enables both educators and lay citizens to have a better understanding and appreciation of schools as they are today. By studying past developments of a given institution, one can better evaluate current requirements and affect future changes as the needs arise.
The Cache County School System as presently constituted has evolved over the years from a cluster of small independent village schools with separate boards of education to a highly centralized system with one board of education and consolidated schools. The purpose of this study is to trace and analyze …
Effects Of Chilling, Chemicals And Pruning On The Rest Period Of Peach Trees, Ataollah Yazdaniha
Effects Of Chilling, Chemicals And Pruning On The Rest Period Of Peach Trees, Ataollah Yazdaniha
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Many deciduous trees enter a stage each year when their visible growth ceases. This is not always associated with cold weather or lack of water, and may occur with many species in mid-to-late summer. Trees entering this phase are said to be in rest. Rest is caused when internal factors are unfavorable for growth, while dormancy is defined as external factors being adverse for growth.
Rest in woody plants was first thought, about 1910, to be caused by cold temperatures. However, Coville (1920) states that deciduous trees enter rest regardless of cold temperature, with a certain period of effective chilling …
Temperature Dependence Of Soil-Moisture Potential, Jacob Willem Kijne
Temperature Dependence Of Soil-Moisture Potential, Jacob Willem Kijne
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Teachers have noticed that children draw only those objects which they know by name. Doubtless the adult has a similar tendency, exemplified by the researcher, to limit his observations or to relate them to that which can be expressed in the terminology of an existing or newly developed theory. In this thesis the data obtained from studies of the temperature and pressure dependence of the relative vapor pressure over moist soil samples are analyzed by a thermodynamic approach. Not all of the results can be explained completely by means of this tool. Natural systems, such as a moist soil, are …
An Analysis Of Prices At Utah Livestock Auctions, Mcneil Glenn
An Analysis Of Prices At Utah Livestock Auctions, Mcneil Glenn
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
From the time of Don Hernando Cortez, livestock has been one of America's greatest industries. The cattle in Cortez's time were Moorish stock which had been bred for centuries in the Andalusian Plains of Spain.
Following this beginning in about 1521, cattle were bred and brought from South America to Mexico. By 1583 the first herds were grazing in what is now Texas.
This was the beginning of the livestock industry and with it carne the endless search for fertile valleys, waterholes, feed in the winter, long trail drives, cattle rustlers, railroads, range wars, and a great American institution, The …
The Role Of Cooperative Societies In The Economic Development Of India, A. M. Rananavare
The Role Of Cooperative Societies In The Economic Development Of India, A. M. Rananavare
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The idea of cooperation is not new to man. It is as old as man himself. Cooperatives are an almost universal form of organization today found in practically all countries and used by people in many ways. The cooperatives are formed to secure low cost credit, to purchase supplies and equipment for farming and household needs, to market products, even to secure many services, like electric power, irrigation, health, and insurance. Cooperatives can be used in many ways to benefit people in the everyday needs of life.
The meaning of cooperation is that isolated and powerless individuals can, by combining …
Demand For Household Water In Northern Utah, 1962, Seth H. Schick
Demand For Household Water In Northern Utah, 1962, Seth H. Schick
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Water is not a single use resource. It can be used for completely unrelated purposes. There are four general uses for water: household, industrial, agricultural, and recreational. Since water is an economic good it must be properly allocated among the four uses to maximize the returns to society. Also, There must be proper allocation among competing units within each major use.
History Of The Japanese-American Relocation Center At Hunt, Minidoka County, Idaho, Donald E. Hausler
History Of The Japanese-American Relocation Center At Hunt, Minidoka County, Idaho, Donald E. Hausler
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the event which hurled the United States into the throes of the Second World War, convinced many military strategists that precautions should be taken to guard the West Canst against possible invasion. The erection of a formidable defense system along the coast was complicated by the fact that 110,000 Japanese lived in Washington, Oregon, and California, a situation that could be hardly ignored by a suspicious public who rapidly formed the opinion that most Japanese-Americans harbored disloyal attitudes and would prove to be a menace to the war effort unless measures were immediately taken …
Simulation Of Mathematical Models In Genetic Analysis, Dinesh Govindal Patel
Simulation Of Mathematical Models In Genetic Analysis, Dinesh Govindal Patel
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In recent years a new field of statistics has become of importance in many branches of experimental science. This is the Monte Carlo Method, so called because it is based on simulation of stochastic processes. By stochastic process, it is meant some possible physical process in the real world that has some random or stochastic element in its structure. This is the subject which may appropriately be called the dynamic part of statistics or the statistics of "change," in contrast with the static statistical problems which have so far been the more systematically studied. Many obvious examples of such processes …
Some Effects Of Modern Weapons Systems Development On The American Economy, Maurice Braginsky
Some Effects Of Modern Weapons Systems Development On The American Economy, Maurice Braginsky
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Cold War goes on! And the use of military strength by the United States as a backdrop to other forms of persuation--political, ideological, diplomatic, and economic--continues. The use of a military backdrop as an instrument of national policy will probably continue indefinitely because it is unlikely that the Soviet Union or Communist China will change their objectives of expansionism; it is too much an integral part of their ideology. The easing of tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union since the Cuban crisis in 1962 is perhaps an indication of a change in tactics and diplomacy, but …

Effects Of Physiological Maturation And Storage On Physical And Biochemical Changes In Peach (Prunus Persica S. And Z.) And Apricot (Prunus Armeniaca L.) Fruits, Pralhadrao Bhimarao Deshpande
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Peaches and apricots are important fruit crops in Utah. They are shipped to distant markets in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, and several other places. These fruits may stay in the market channels for 2 to 4 weeks before they reach the consumer, and sometimes are held at the retail center at temperatures as high as 70-90° F. Decay of these fruits has been a serious problem facing shipping agencies, grocery stores, and the roadstand industry (Salunkhe, 1960).
The quality of fresh as well as processed fruit is influenced by the stage of maturity at picking. Bedford and Robertson (1955), …

Degenerative disease of old age such as atherosclerosis and cerebral hemorrhage appear to be related to abnormal lipid metabolism. Many investigators have studied the role of steroid hormones on lipid and cholesterol metabolism in rats and chickens. The results have consistantly indicated that both corticosteroids and sex hormones play an important role in the regulation of lipid and cholesterol metabolism, in vivo. Serum cholesterol values in humans have been decreased by estrogens, while androgen administration tends to increase circulating cholesterol. Estrogens have been shown to decrease circulating cholesterol and prevent cholesterol-induced coronary atherosclerosis in chickens. A study of the …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Attitudes are usually defined as feelings for or against something (Remmers and Gage, 1955). They are very important in the lives of people because they help determine future success in an individual's life. Because of them one works to get the things he wants, one votes for or against certain issues, one joins a cause, opposes something, or attempts to influence others.

Evaporation And Potential Evapotranspiration In Central Iraq, Ala H. Al-Barrak
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The principal objectives of this study were to compare several formulas for estimating pan evaporation and evapotranspiration and to derive new formulas or modify existing formulas that will better fit the data for central Iraq. Computed evaporation was compared with measured evaporation by determining the differences and the ratios. The pan evaporation formulas were also compared by expressing them all in the form
Ev = K CRCTCWCHCDTCSCM
Three pan evaporation formulas were modified. For the Meyer and Utah formulas, the constants were changed and expressions were derived …
Effect Of Fluoride On The Respiration Of Leaves From Higher Plants, Ming-Ho Yu
Effect Of Fluoride On The Respiration Of Leaves From Higher Plants, Ming-Ho Yu
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Studies concerning the effects of fluoride on the metabolism of both animals and plants have been of interest to many workers. In plants, it has been known that fluoride will inhibit the growth, that it will induce chlorosis as an evidence of visible injury, and that necrosis will eventually result. The economic importance associated with fluoride damage has been widely recognized, and, as a consequence, fluoride has become a major problem of air pollution.

Influence Of Sodium And Calcium Chlorides In The Nutrient Solution On Secretions Of Salt Glands Of Tamarix Species, Don L. Chadwick
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Salt glands are an adaptation for living in saline habitats possessed by several species of plants. In the family of Plumbaginaceae at least three mangrove genera, Aegialitis, Aegiceras, and Avicennia, possess salt glands according to Scholander (1962). Salt glands of the small ornamental shrubs, Statice gmelini, and Limonium latifoluim of the same family, were studied by Ruhland (1915) and Arisz (1955). Spartina townsendii of the Graminaceae and Tamarix petandra, Tamarix hispida, and Tamarix aphylla of the Tamaricaceae families also have the glands.
Studies Of The Incorporation Of 5-Fluorouracil Into Tobacco Mosaic Viral Rna By Cell-Free Synthesing Systems Isolated From Infected Tobacco Plants, Helen Lu-Sheng Wang
Studies Of The Incorporation Of 5-Fluorouracil Into Tobacco Mosaic Viral Rna By Cell-Free Synthesing Systems Isolated From Infected Tobacco Plants, Helen Lu-Sheng Wang
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Research on biosynthesis of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) ribonucleic acid in vitro has been reported by a number of laboratories (8, 16, 17). Bonner et al. postulated that ribonucleic acid could be synthesized from nucleotides by chromatin extracted from nuclei of pea seedlings (5, 14, 22). The evidence from in vitro synthesis of viral RNA suggested that an enzyme, RNA polymerase, links the four nucleotides (ATP, UTP, CTP, GTP) with viral RNA present as a primer and magnesium ions participating as a catalyst (7, 8).
