The radiation climate of Cache Valley was established from the continuous recordings of global and diffuse sky radiation at Utah State University campus from June 1968 to July 1969 and August 1968 to July 1969, respectively. The influence of topographic features during summer and winter conditions at seven representative locations running on an east-west direction across the valley were determined by making short term measurements on clear days.

Some of the factors influencing the performance of bromoxynil, 4(2,4-DB), or a companion crop for weed control in seedling alfalfa were studied in the greenhouse and at field locations in Farmington and Logan, Utah. The effect of application rate, stage of growth, temperature, and soil moisture on the phytotoxicity of bromoxynil and 4(2,4-DB) to alfalfa and weeds were studied.
Alfalfa yields were increased by 4(2,4-DB) at all rates and stages of application. All rates and stages of bromoxynil treatment except the one-fourth pound per acre three to four trifoliate application resulted in alfalfa yields below that of the control.

Morphological, anatomical, and histochemical effects of S-ethyl dipropylthiocarbamate (EPTC) on Avena sativa var. overland were studied after treatment of seeds at various EPTC concentrations.
The oat seed germination percentage was not affected by EPTC treatment. EPTC delayed initial root and coleoptile development at all concentrations used. Two or three days after treatment, however, the roots of seedlings treated with EPTC concentrations lower than 3 ppm grew at the same rate as the untreated seedlings and showed no abnormalities. Primary and adventitious root growth of seedlings treated with 3 ppm and higher was inhibited. Most of the adventitious roots remained in …

The objective of this study was to examine the extent to which congruent role expectations on 50 selected variables were held for the secondary school principal about his role in professional administration and in collective negotiations by representatives of Utah's educational enterprise. A survey was performed to compare basic health education knowledge between sophomore students at Utah State University and sophomore students at the University of Utah. This was performed through the use of a questionnaire consisting of 40 questions covering the following eight areas of prominence in health education:
1. Alcohol and tobacco
2. Community health and communicable disease
3. Consumer health
4. Drugs and narcotics
5. Food fads and medical quackery
6. Mental health
7. Personal health
8. Sex education

The reading abilities of trade and industrial education students enrolled in the six trade and industrial education courses of automotive mechanics, building construction, drafting, electronics, machine shop, and welding in the six high schools of Granite School District were studied in relation to the rated readability of basic textbooks used in those courses. Additional relationships were studied between student reading abilities and intelligence, between course grades and intelligence, and between course grades and reading abilities.

Information on the Future Homemakers of America at the national, state, and local level was studied and compiled, such as publications, scrapbooks, personal material, and other records.
It was found that the Utah organization of the Future Homemakers of America has followed the nationally outlined program for projects, activities, and meetings. The projects worked on within the state seem to have supported the eight stated purposes of the Future Homemakers.
It was shown that Future Home makers representing Utah have attended all of the national meetings for the past twenty-five years. Utah has contributed only five national officers. Student officers …

The annual demography of a population of antelope ground squirrels in Curlew Valley, Utah was studied by measuring population density, natality, and mortality. Capture- recapture techniques yielded lower estimates than the Hayne strip- census. The estimates suggested 1968 was a year of population decline.
One hundred seventy- three squirrels were collected and autopsied to obtain sex ratio, age structure, natality, and mortality data. The seasonal sex ratios for adult and yearling squirrels showed 82 percent females in spring 1968, this gradually changed to 56 percent by winter. The seasonal sex ratios of the young squirrels showed 59 percent females upon …

The purpose of this study was to determine if cross-country is a desirable sport for the Utah High School Activities Association to include as an interscholastic sport.
In order to determine practices, standards, and regulations of a desirable cross-country program, reasons for not including cross-country, and what the status of c ross-country is in Utah, questionnaires were sent to the states having a state sanctioned cross-country program , the states that do not have a state sanctioned cross-country program, and the track coaches in Utah.

The primary objective of this study was to develop demand equations at retail for selected Venezuelan food commodities. Commodities included for analysis were rice, refined sugar, crude sugar, flour, potatoes, beef, pork, black beans, corn, and powdered milk.
The basic statistical technique employed in the analysis was least squares multiple regression. Although several mathematical forms for these demand equations were evaluated, a log-log transform was found to be most useful. Independent variables included own price, prices of substitutes and complements, time and income. Observations were taken from Venezuelan time series data over the period 1945-1965.

In the administration of justice in the Territory of Utah the United States marshal served an important role, especially because of the conflict between Mormons and non-Mormons. The marshal was an officer of the federal court, and as such he served warrants, obtained witnesses, helped select jurors, conducted executions upon order of the court, collected the census, served as warden of the territorial penitentiary, and in addition. performed many minute and tedious duties.

This study was designed to provide information about: (1) Utah State University students' impressions of counseling, (2) the sources of these impressions, (3) students' awareness of the University Counseling Center, and (4) the effect of the foregoing factors on student use of the counseling facilities.
The sample consisted of a group of 107 freshmen and 43 sophomores randomly selected from the general psychology courses at Utah State University, Logan, Utah. Student information was obtained by a questionnaire and students' impressions of counseling were assessed by a semantic differential. The data were analyzed by t-test, chi-square and analysis of variance.

A study was made to determine the relative profitability and competitive position of cattle fattening, lamb fattening, and milk production in the state of Utah for 1968.
Production costs of cattle fattening ranged from $22.10 to $32.28 per hundred pounds of gain. Net return amounted to $19.65 per head. Lamb fattening costs ranged from $24.25 to $29.76 per hundred pounds of gain. Net return from lamb feeding operations averaged $2.06 per head. Cost of producing milk amounted to $4.90 per hundredweight while net return amounted to $.61 per hundredweight.

Five long-run average cost curves were derived from questionnaire and interview data by connecting points corresponding to the per unit production costs and levels of beef output for four cattle ranch sizes (50, 150, 300, and 500 head of breeding cows). Analysis of the long-run average cost curves in combination with the 1968 weighted Utah beef price revealed that all four ranch sizes studied are capable of meeting cash costs. If the goal of the ranch operator is to meet both cash costs and depreciation, a cattle ranch supporting 105 breeding cows is the minimum size necessary. If provision is …

The response of grass, forb, and shrub seeds to the subalpine environment during the fall and under winter snow and under laboratory conditions at 20/28 C was observed for 3 consecutive years at an elevation of about 3000m on the Wasatch Plateau in central Utah.
Seeds in nylon sleeves were planted under 2 cm of soil before snowfall. Under snow plantings were made directly on the soil surface and under 2 cm of soil. A factorially designed experiment had 18 Hereford and 18 Holstein steers on individually fed, high-grain diets. One diet included 59% rolled barley, 30% CSF beet pulp, 5% protein, vitamin, mineral, and stilbestrol supplement, and 6% chopped hay and straw. The other diet had corn silage (11% air dry matter equivalent) substituted for the chopped roughage and 5% of the beet pulp. The Holsteins were heavier at the start, 752 lb. as compared to the Herefords 686 lb. average. The weight differential was maintained throughout the approximately 180-day trial. The Holstein's feed consumption and rate of gain, 23.4 and 2.71 lb. …

This study was designed to determine the relative profitability of sugar beet production relative to other enterprises competing with sugar beets for limited resources and to estimate a production response of sugar beet growers in the beet producing areas of Utah.
Sugar beet producing areas in Utah were delineated. Representative farm units for beef-crop, dairy-crop, and all-crop farms were synthesized. Enterprise budgets were formulated and analysed to ascertain the relative profitableness of sugar beets compared to competing enterprises in each production area.

An analysis of four Utah retail selling areas was made to determine the changes in the market structure of the retail grocery industry of these markets. The study markets were Logan, Ogden, Salt Lake, and Provo-Orem. This study was an ex tension of the National Commission Food Marketing study of the retail food marketing industry.
The major changes observed in the study markets were increasing population, dollar food sales, supermarket saturation levels and concentration ratios. The number of retail food outlets was decreasing. The barriers to entry in the study markets increased during the study period.

The American College Testing Program's Institutional Self-Study Survey was used in this study to consider USU students' goals, achievements, and evaluations of their collegiate experience. Goals included were students' educational majors, vocational plans, final college degree sought, and the relative importance attached to attaining Vocational, Academic, Social, and Non-Conventional goals. This paper presents the results of the analysis of 10 years of information 1957-1966 on three phases-- begin, peak and end bloom-- of the purple common lilac (Syringa vulgaris L.) using data recorded at approximately 1,000 locations throughout the Western Region of the United States.
The pattern of geographical advance of the various bloom phases is determined by both a manual mapping procedure developed by the author and by standard statistical methods. The effect of teaching critical thinking as part of a continuous progress packet in American history was studied at Cedar High School during the 1969-70 school year. An experimental group using the critical thinking packet was compared with a control group that used a continuous progress packet that taught only American history.
The dependent variables for the study were the STEP (Sequential Test of Educational Progress), Social Studies portion, and the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal. No statistically significant differences were found between the groups in either American history or critical thinking.

A determination was made of the degree to which the four requirements of Gault were met in District I of the Utah Juvenile Court between July 1, 1967 and June 30, 1969. The requirements handed down in 1967 by the U. S. Supreme Court were as follows: (a) guarantee to the right of notice given to the juvenile himself and to his parents; (b) right to counsel, representation by counsel in juvenile delinquency proceedings; (c) right to confrontation and cross-examination by prosecuting witness; and (d) privilege against self-incrimination in juvenile delinquency proceedings.

Runoff and rainfall data have been taken from three high mountain Utah watersheds and subjected to runoff to rainfall comparisons. The resulting Q/P ratios have been compared to the average volumes of runoff curve numbers (CN) computed from this data for each watershed. Runoff curve numbers were also estimated on the basis of the soils and vegetation data available for the watersheds.
An attempt has been made to estimate the watershed lag characteristics by computing synthetic hydrographs for successively larger values of time to peak estimates until the best fit comparison was achieved between the snythetic and the actual hydrographs. …

As the railroad and mining industries brought non-Mormon settlers into the territory of Utah, a conflict developed which led to the creation of a separate system of education by the Protestant newcomers. Their purposes were to provide a quality education for their own children free from Mormon influence and to convert children of Mormon families. The Presbyterian Church led in the creation of graded schools from elementary, through secondary, and culminating in the Sheldon Jackson College in Salt Lake City.

The purpose of this study was to determine :
1. What actions sixth grade children think should be taken in situations that contain certain elements of civil rights.
2. The reasons given by the sixth grade children for choosing these actions.
A measuring instrument was constructed from 14 court cases containing certain elements of civil rights. These court cases were then rewritten so that sixth grade students could comprehend the vocabulary and situations described. Statements for students responses were developed from the case itself, newspapers, and magazine articles.

A marked population of Spermophilus armatus averaging 529 individuals per year was studied for two and a half seasons on a 22-acre tract in northern Utah. The average date of emergence from hibernation of the first squirrel was 9 April. Mating occurred as soon as animals emerged from hibernation. The average date of appearance of the first litter was 31 May. Emergence sizes of litters were from 5.2 for yearling females to 6.3 for adult females. Few instances of predation were observed. Purpose
The purpose of this study was two-fold: (1) to determine the educational needs of the personnel of the five directorates at Hill Air Force Base; and, (2) to design an educational program to meet those needs.
Procedure
This study consisted of three phases:
Phase One. This phase consisted of identifying the behavioral items that were used in developing the Q-Sort instrument. This was accomplished by a review of job requirement data, by an examination of Project Hy Production, and by personal interviews of the Air Base educational specialists.
