An Analysis Of The Taxonomic Status Of A New Taxon In The Genus Salsola, H. Lamont Arnold May 1972

An Analysis Of The Taxonomic Status Of A New Taxon In The Genus Salsola, H. Lamont Arnold

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

An attempt was made to determine the taxonomic status of a Salsola taxon new to Utah but found quite extensively in parts of Nevada, and California. The disciplines of cytogenetics, morphology, anatomy, chemotaxonomy, and palynology were employed.

It is the consensus of some taxonomists that this new taxon, referred to as Salsola X and which has lax perianth tips, is a variant of the Salsola Salsola paulsenii Litv. or barbwire Russian thistle taxon. Accepted taxonomic authorities on the Cheopodiaceae, Aellen and Botschantzev, consider the erect, spinose perianth tips to be a morphological character used in delimiting S. paulsenii. If …

The Action Of Antibiotics And Antimetabolites On The Tobacco Mosaic Virus Infection Process In Bean Leaves, Virendra Nayyar May 1972

The Action Of Antibiotics And Antimetabolites On The Tobacco Mosaic Virus Infection Process In Bean Leaves, Virendra Nayyar

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The action of 28 antibiotics and antimetabolites at varying concentrations was studied in coincidence with the bioassay of tobacco mosaic virus on detached bean leaves by using an ultrasonic method of inoculation developed by Lamborn, Cochran and Chidester.1 All tested chemicals were classified, in regard to the virus infection process, as inhibitory or stimulatory and their optimal concentrations in the inoculum were determined. Of the 28 antibiotics and antimetabolites studied, eight were found to stimulate while twenty inhibited TMV infection in bean leaves. From the results of these experiments, an attempt was made to characterize the nature of the …

Xenobiotic Detoxication Potential And Drug Induced Changes In Carbaryl Toxicity In The Alfalfa Leafcutter Bee, Megachile Rotundata (Febricius), Richard M. Lee May 1972

Xenobiotic Detoxication Potential And Drug Induced Changes In Carbaryl Toxicity In The Alfalfa Leafcutter Bee, Megachile Rotundata (Febricius), Richard M. Lee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The alfalfa leafcutter bee, Megachile rotundata, one of the most important pollinators of alfalfa, generally became more susceptible to carbaryl as the adults aged. LD50 values for carbaryl toxicity were 240,166, 109, and 51 μg carbaryl/gram for the 1, 2, 3, and 4 days-old adult male bees. For the female bees, these were 245 , 551, 289, and 262 μg car-baryl/ gram. Lipid content and microsomal enzyme activity (measured by EPN detoxication in vitro) decreased in both sexes as the bees aged.

Synergist ratios, defined as the ratio of the LD50 of carbaryl alone …

Chris Argyris And Organizational Behavior, Richard L. White Apr 1972

Chris Argyris And Organizational Behavior, Richard L. White

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

This paper is about organizational behavior and one man's research and ideas about this subject. That man is Chris Argyris.

Chris Argyris has been at Yale University for nearly two decades as a professor of Industrial Administration until recently moving to Harvard. During that period of time he has evolved from a beginning student of the behavioral sciences to a respected scholar and research authority in the field of organizational behavior. His own ideas have changed from a beginning theoretical framework to more established and accepted commentaries on organizational behavior.

The purpose of this paper is to dissect and explain …

Values And Schooling, Perspectives For School People And Parents, James P. Shaver Apr 1972

Values And Schooling, Perspectives For School People And Parents, James P. Shaver

Faculty Honor Lectures

One of the most perplexing issues facing school people is posed by the question, "What should the school's role be in regard to students' values?" Some version of that question may even on occasion provoke concern among parents. When they do become involved in related disputes over what the .school should be doing - usually as part of an aroused minority reacting to a new element in the school program - parents are .likely to make such declarations as, "The school has no business messing with the values of our children!" Individually, they are likely to think, but not say …

Methodological And Validation Study Of Seed Reserves In Desert Soils, David W. Goodall, Stuart Childs, Herman Wiebe Apr 1972

Methodological And Validation Study Of Seed Reserves In Desert Soils, David W. Goodall, Stuart Childs, Herman Wiebe

Memorandum

The development of a method for separating seeds from desert soils, and enumerating them, is described.

In the Great Basin desert, species differed greatly in their depth distribution, some having a peak at or just below the surface, while others were still abundant below 5 cm. Much higher seed densities were found beneath the canopies of shrubs and of tussock grasses than in the inter-spaces; no consistent differences were found, however, associated with the species of the canopy plant, or with distance from its center.

Tentative estimates are given of the seed population in the four validation sites in Curlew …

Forest Fuel Accumulation -- A Growing Problem, Marvin Dodge Jan 1972

Forest Fuel Accumulation -- A Growing Problem, Marvin Dodge

The Bark Beetles, Fuels, and Fire Bibliography

Discusses the problem caused by accumulation of forest fuels in the wild-land forests of the western USA under the policy of total fire protection pursued there for many years, and emphasizes the need to find economical and practical ways of reducing fuel hazards in these forests, especially by means of prescribed burning under conditions in which low-intensity fires can be achieved.

The Colorado Plateau, Robert Durrenberger Jan 1972

The Colorado Plateau, Robert Durrenberger

Canyonlands Research Bibliography

The Colorado Plateau was one of the last areas in the United States to be developed economically. Before the 1880s it was virtually empty except for Indians. Today the vast scenic and energy resources of the area are under development, and projections for future development are frightening. Problems of land use management are directly related to the fragmented nature of landholdings. Present methods of consolidation are inadequate, and new approaches to the organization of space must be devised if further degradation of the environment is to be prevented.
