A Survey Of Awareness Programs Regarding Infant Hearing Loss, Ronald Rao Bateman May 1972

A Survey Of Awareness Programs Regarding Infant Hearing Loss, Ronald Rao Bateman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Hearing conservation specialists are aware of the need for early identification and diagnosis of impaired hearing. This awareness of need has led to the development of several identification methods in the United States. Public awareness programs designed to inform laymen and professionals of the danger signals of infant hearing impairment currently are coming into focus, both as a separate entity and as part of total identification procedures.

Current public awareness programs regarding infant hearing loss were surveyed in the present study and recommendations on a model awareness program of this type were obtained. Fifty-one hearing conservation specialists participated in the …

Population Ecology Of Uinta Ground Squirrels, Norman A. Slade May 1972

Population Ecology Of Uinta Ground Squirrels, Norman A. Slade

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The behavior and ecology of Uinta ground squirrels (Spermophilus armatus) at the Utah State University Forestry Field Station northeast of Logan, Utah were studied from 1964-1971 to determine the role of behavior in population regulation. From 1965 to 1968, data were collected to establish population norms. In 1968, the population density was reduced experimentally to help elucidate regulatory processes. This paper compares the dynamics of the population before and after the population reduction.

Before the density reduction, juvenile survival was lower than that of yearlings and adults. The disappearance of juveniles was associated with their tendency to disperse …

Inferred Values Of Clothing Related To Adjustment Among Pregnant Women, Violet Elizabeth Dowdeswell May 1972

Inferred Values Of Clothing Related To Adjustment Among Pregnant Women, Violet Elizabeth Dowdeswell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The first objective of this study was to investigate the adjustment of women during pregnancy through various indices, namely: level of anxiety, attitudes to pregnancy, and perception of body-image boundaries, and to investigate the relationship among these indices. A second objective was to determine if a significant rank order of values inferred through clothing exists among pregnant women, and to relate these values to the measures of adjustment. The comparison of women by trimester and gravidity on the measures of adjustment and the inferred values, was a third objective.

The theoretical framework proposed that adjustment to the stress of pregnancy …

The Tertiary intrusives are exposed in an area 10 miles long and 2 miles wide between Bear River and Maple Creek in the foothills of the Bear River Range east of Preston, Idaho. They trend north-northwest. The intrusives are mostly diabase but include a small body of syenodiorite and several small andesite dikes. The intrusives seem to be emplaced along early Basin and Range faults. They are limited to the Cache Valley Member …

Geology Of The Wildcat Hills, Utah, Ronald C. Howes May 1972

Geology Of The Wildcat Hills, Utah, Ronald C. Howes

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Wildcat Hills, located in Curlew Valley of northwestern Utah, are composed of a series of late Tertiary extrusive and dike rocks. Five volcanic rock types have been identified: an andesite, a rhyolite, a perlite, a basalt, and a welded tuff. Hydration of obsidian pellets contained in the flows has produced some of the perlite. Diatremes in the andesite attest to the high-volatile content and the explosive extrusion of some of the lavas. A compound basalt neck indicates that basalt was extruded at the Wildcat Hills and is not an erosional remnant of the basalt flow from the base of …

Verbal expression was measured by an analysis of stories told by each subject before and after tutoring, in response to sequence pictures and standup figures. Measures of vocabulary, sentence structure and evidence …

The Young Child's Concept Of Human Conception And Birth, Julie Ann Broberg Puzey May 1972

The Young Child's Concept Of Human Conception And Birth, Julie Ann Broberg Puzey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The views held by children about the ere at ion and birth of babies are of importance in child development and developmental psychology. However, most of the research done in this area has been of a theoretical nature rather than empirical. The research shows controversy in the child's concept of human conception and birth, and because of this controversy a study was deemed necessary to find out more of what the young child's concept is of human conception and birth.

The purpose of this study, therefore, was to attempt to determine the extent of children's awareness of the nature of …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Parental preference of girls and boys was studied in this research. Situations of recreation, personal and moral needs, places and things, and social events constituted the range of choices in the children's selection for one parent or the other as a companion for the activity.

Ninety children (30 preschool, 30 third graders, and 30 sixth graders) were tested individually by an interview schedule. The Parent-Affinity Perception Scale developed for this research contained 30 items. Children were asked to choose "Mother" or "Father" as a response for each item.

The findings indicated a significant difference in preference for "Mother" rather than …

Family Planning Of Mormon Women In Three-Generation Families, Brent C. Miller May 1972

Family Planning Of Mormon Women In Three-Generation Families, Brent C. Miller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This intergenerational study compared the family planning and related attitudes of females who were daughter-mother-grandmother relatives. Questionnaire responses of eighty-one subjects in twenty-seven three-generation families were analyzed regarding birth control, abortion, and population crisis attitudes. Other variables studied included Mormon orthodoxy, education, and place of residence.

Except for abortion, the generations had significantly different attitudes. The oldest generation's attitudes, which were the most conservative, differed significantly when contrasted with the more similar attitudes of the middle and younger generations. Mormon orthodoxy was the most dramatically significant factor in attitude differences. Education and residence were not significant sources of attitude variance; …

The motivating effects of positive and negative verbal reinforcement and researcher attitude on the performance of preschool children were studied in relation to socioeconomic level. Forty children from the Utah State University Child Development Laboratory and forty from Head Start classrooms in northern Utah served as subjects. Each child performed the simple task of placing pegs in a pegboard during a 60- second time interval; once under conditions of positive verbal reinforcement and positive attitude, and again, under one of four experimental conditions: control; positive reinforcement/positive attitude; negative reinforcement/positive attitude; or negative reinforcement/ negative attitude.

The findings seemed to indicate …

Effect Of Sex Orientation Of Stimulus Objects On Sex Differences In Language Development, Cathy Walters May 1972

Effect Of Sex Orientation Of Stimulus Objects On Sex Differences In Language Development, Cathy Walters

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The objective of this study was to aid in discovering whether or not the sex differences in language development are at least partially a result of the differential effect of the environment on the two sexes by determining whether the sex orientation of stimulus objects presented to preschool children would influence the quantity and quality of verbal responses emitted by the children. Twenty preschool children, 10 boys and 10 girls, were each presented with neutral, masculine oriented, and feminine oriented stimulus objects and were asked to respond to them in the form of a story. Quantity of verbal responses was …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The effects of the Home and Hospital Program upon entry, as contrasted with termination, on the neurotic tendencies and attitudes of pregnant school-age girls were studied using a sample of 25 pregnant junior and senior high school students in the Ogden City School District.

Of the Four areas tested for neuroticism no difference was found between the time of entry and exit from the program. These pregnant girls did not test in the neurotic range and rate above the general population in only one component of neuroticism, "Submissiveness". The other components tested in the average range.

Of the 8 areas …

An Economic Analysis Of Nitrogen And Phosphorus Fertilization On Several Utah Range And Meadow Sites, Thomas M. Quigley May 1972

An Economic Analysis Of Nitrogen And Phosphorus Fertilization On Several Utah Range And Meadow Sites, Thomas M. Quigley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Previous research has shown that rangeland forage production can be increased through fertilization. A study was conducted to determine if fertilization of various Utah range sites was economically feasible. Six range sites were selected for analysis. The addition of nitrogen increased forage production on three sites. Phosphorus had no effect in increasing production. Production functions of the form, Y = a + bN - cN2 , where Y is pounds of forage per acre and N is pounds of nitrogen per acre, were estimated for both fall and spring applications. Using current prices of Y and N the optimum …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since its inception, the National Wildlife Refuge System has been administered for management and restoration of habitat essential to the propagation and welfare of resident and wintering wildlife species. Acquisition of additional System units has been primarily directed to the benefit of the migratory bird resource. As of July 1, 1968 about 250 of the 321 refuge units were managed for the waterfowl resource (U. S. Department of Interior, 1968a). However, this growth of the System has been accompanied by an increase in recreational use of the refuges. In 1962, Public Law 87-714, the Refuge Recreation Act, was passed to …

Stratigraphy And Environmental Analysis Of The Swan Peak Formation And Eureka Quartzite, Northern Utah, George Gregory Francis May 1972

Stratigraphy And Environmental Analysis Of The Swan Peak Formation And Eureka Quartzite, Northern Utah, George Gregory Francis

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Swan Peak Formation in north-central Utah thickens westward, from zero feet near Logan to 687 feet in the Promontory Range. The unit is subdivided into three distinct members: 1) A lower member of interbedded shales, limestones, and quartzites; 2) A middle member of interbedded shales and brown quartzites; and 3) An upper member of white quartzites. The Swan Peak thins southward toward the east-west-trending Tooele Arch in the area of study; this thinning probably reflects both lesser deposition and greater subsequent erosion there than elsewhere. The lower member in northern Utah probably was deposited in shallow-shelf and/or traditional shoreface-shelf …

A Study Of Supply And Demand For Elementary School Teachers In Venezula, Evilexis Betancourt May 1972

A Study Of Supply And Demand For Elementary School Teachers In Venezula, Evilexis Betancourt

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In Venezuela, as in most Latin American countries, education is one of the most important factors in the development process. Within the educational structures, primary schooling is especially important due to the large share of the population under age 12, the great percentage of people of lower social status (who are content with primary schooling for their children), and a still high rate of illiteracy. Fortunately this rate has been declining due to emphasis on and importance of primary education.

The Indentification Of Work Adjustment Problems Of The 1970 And 1971 Manpower Development And Training Program Trainees At Utah State University, Mary Ann Jensen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

There is a tradition in vocational education which emphasizes teaching technical knowledge and skills while neglecting the development of attitudes and social skills which have been shown to be important causes of problems for office workers. The terms in general use to identify these skills and attitudes are work adjustment and occupational adjustment. Borow calls them " ... the work ethos, a set of attitudes, rules of etiquette, and interpersonal skills involving relations with fellow workers, supervisors, and clients." He goes on to say that:

It is astonishing to what degree the school and the community assume that any student …

Graduate Recital, Saralyn M. Gibson May 1972

Graduate Recital, Saralyn M. Gibson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

J. S. Bach, in his Italian Concerto, has the solo keyboard carry on a dialogue with itself. The work appeared in 1735 in Bach's Clavierubung, Volume II, which had to excuse its printed existence by explaining that it had instructional value. And so, along with this Concerto Nach Italiaennischen Gusto, or concerto "following the Italian taste," it also included an Overture (or Partita) " in the French manner. "

A Study Of A Portion Of The Distributive Education Teacher Preparation Program At Utah State University, Darrel Q. Dixon

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The major purpose of distributive education is to prepare the student for entry-level employment in distributive occupations. This preparation should help workers become successful and advance in their chosen field of distributive occupations.

No matter how instruction is organized, when it is identified as vocational distributive education, there are no differences in the results desired. Students are to be able to meet employment qualifications with the confidence and the competencies necessary to begin marketing and management careers.

To meet this goal, the student should qualify himself to receive satisfaction and contentment in his work. Sidney P. Marland's deep expression in …

Cooperative Extension Service Organization And Administration In Utah And Thailand, Sommart Chinoim May 1972

Cooperative Extension Service Organization And Administration In Utah And Thailand, Sommart Chinoim

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Thailand is an agricultural country with about 80 percent of the population operating farms. Agriculture is the main source of national income and 90 percent of all exports are agricultural products. The farms are small and a high percent of the farmers are illiterate which accounts for so many people remaining on farms. Even though agricultural development is under the National Economic and Social Development Plan, new methods of farming are not easily accessible to the small farmers. They still follow their ancestor's methods of cultivating, irrigating, and harvesting their crops. Most farmers operate subsistent farm units. They plant enough …

Organization And Administration Of The State Aaa Wrestling Tournament Held At Utah State University, Robert Duane Carlson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Amateur wrestling is one of our finest interscholastic sports. Although it is one of many sports that involves both individual and team competition, the individual wrestler classified according to weight, seems to receive more recognition than in many other sports .

Hence, the ultimate of individual expression in wrestling is the tournament. The growing emphasis on multi-team wrestling tournaments, has presented a problem in organizing and administering such a tournament. Little has been done in the past to help the inexperienced coach obtain the necessary information needed to help him feel confident about volunteering to direct and host a tournament. …

A Survey To Determine Methods Used By Selected Employers Of Cache County, Utah, To Assess Desirable Personal Characteristics Need By Typists, Stenographers, And Secretaries, Gail Verderamo Benson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

One major aspect of business education has always been character training. In many cases, businessmen feel that the technical skills are not as important as good character. Therefore, business educators must consider the wishes of the businessman and train their students to fill the jobs he offers. By trying to instill many of the desirable personal characteristics in students, business educators may help meet this goal.

The character traits needed by business would depend on the needs of the individual business and the personal preferences of the person in charge of hiring. There are differences, both in quantity and quality, …

Graduate Recital, Daniel C. Rich

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

From the beginning of the recital preparation , which began seriously about nine months prior to the performance, certain objectives were established. These objectives dealt with the areas of performance and composition. Concerning the performance, the objectives were to perform on the three "standard" symphonic trumpets -- the Bb , C, and D -- with competency and musicality; to play successfully varying styles from the periods which produced great trumpet literature -- the Baroque and Modern -- and to improve specific personal technique problems. Since composition is an integral part of the music process, it was hoped that an original …

A Work-Study Program For Educable Mentally Retarded In Lincoln Junior High--Salt Lake City, Utah, Jay Elmo Christensen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In the spring of 1968 this writer was assigned to teach a group of seventh, eighth and ninth grade students who had been labeled Educable Mentally Retarded at Lincoln Junior High School. The students ranged from twelve to sixteen years of age, and many of them were from lower income homes.

In attempting to set up a work-study program the administration had decided that they preferred a work-study orientation program for these pupils. It was hoped that this type of program would motivate the students to become more involved in the school program.
