Quantifying The Effect Of Stable Stratification On Low-Reynolds Number Flow Past A Horizontal Cylinder, Holland Kartchner Dec 2023

Quantifying The Effect Of Stable Stratification On Low-Reynolds Number Flow Past A Horizontal Cylinder, Holland Kartchner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

In this research, we study the behavior of flow around a cylinder in the presence of stable stratification, which refers to variations in density throughout the fluid. This phenomenon is observed in natural and industrial settings. We use computer simulations to analyze how stratification affects the flow patterns created by the cylinder. Specifically, we investigate situations where the stratification is perpendicular to the flow direction, and the wake exhibits two-dimensional characteristics. We use spectral-element method based computational fluids dynamics to simulate the phenomena. During the simulations, we vary two important parameters: the Densimetric Froude Number (Fr) and the …

Evaluating Implementer Preference For And Correspondence Between Structured Descriptive Analysis And Trial Based Functional Analysis, Kacy Rodamaker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Determining the function of maladaptive behavior aides in the creation of effective intervention measures to change that behavior. Three assessments that are used to determine behavioral function include the trial based functional analysis (TBFA), structured descriptive analysis (SDA), and antecedent-behavior-consequence (ABC) recording. In the present study, we compared the time it took to conduct each of these assessments as well as the similarity between the functions identified by each assessment. Additionally, we compared procedural acceptability and implementer preference between the SDA and TBFA by collecting survey results from a staff participant who implemented the two measures with the support of …

Optimal Stopping Of Multi-Robot Exploration For Unknown, Bounded Environments, Trey D. Crowther

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Limited resources and uncertainty pose a substantial problem for multi-robot exploration of unknown environments. This research paper looks to determine the optimal time to terminate robot exploration while maximizing information gathered. Whilst making this determination, the system's resources and capabilities must be taken into account. To see if our strategy works, we ran many simulations in varying environments. The results of this research are important for real-world uses like robot exploration, search and rescue missions, and automated surveillance. Determining when to stop exploring can help the system save resources, explore faster, and make better decisions.

Impact Of Moisture Content And Composition On Flow Properties Of Dairy Powders, Katelynn Palmer Dec 2023

Impact Of Moisture Content And Composition On Flow Properties Of Dairy Powders, Katelynn Palmer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Milk protein concentrate (MPC) and isolate (MPI), and milk permeate powder (MPP) are functional dairy powder products that are used in food applications worldwide. It is critical that environmental factors and physical powder characteristics during production and storage are controlled. When dairy powders are exposed to non-ideal conditions (high moisture, varying temperatures,) they can quickly become very sticky, and clumpy. When powders become sticky, their ability to easily flow is reduced. As a result, processing and storing the powders effectively and sustainably becomes very difficult.

In the first study, an analysis method was created to test the general flow behavior …

Designing And Studying Redox-Active Molecules For Energy Storage And Desalination, Wenda Wu

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Since the fast growth of the global population, energy scarcity has become a new threat to modern society. Those commonly seen resources like fossil, coal, and natural gas are nonrenewable energies, which cannot be replenished by human-scale time. In contrast, wind, solar, and hydropower are the three main renewable green energies under development with great efforts around the world. However, the intermittent character of these powers raises a new question: how to store them properly on large scales? By 2021, more than 90% of the electricity storage was taken by Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The usage of lithium brings concerns about …

What Is The Potential Of Non-Battery Energy Storage To Increase Grid Resilience?, Andrew Withers

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

This paper seeks to evaluate different technologies in energy storage to determine which ones have the most potential to benefit the energy grid. Technologies like pumped hydro, thermal, gravity, hydrogen, and compressed air storage will be evaluated based on overall costs, marginal costs, unique applications, and efficiency. This paper compares the technologies to batteries on the previous criteria. I also provide a discussion on the policy and economic barriers to the further use of non-battery technologies to support grid reliability during the transition to a cleaner grid that is more reliant on variable renewable generators.

Compatibility Of Conformal And Projective Structures, Eli Atkin

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

In 1972 Ehlers Pirani and Schild, published a paper The geometry of free fall and light propagation. The authors established a constructive set of axioms for building a relativistic space time geometry based on the compatibility of projective and conformal structures. In recent years two papers have been published addressing the validity of these results. The first of these papers by Matveev and Trautman claim to give the necessary and sufficient conditions for the projective and conformal structures to be compatible, and in doing so conclude that the central claim of the EPS paper is wrong. In 2020 Matveev and …

Instrumentality: How We Develop Relationships With Objects And People, Nathaniel Bee

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

There are many different types of relationships a person will have throughout their life, each being given varying levels of authenticity, weight, and care. One’s attention is primarily placed upon the meaningful relationships in one’s life, but often deeper consideration of one’s “lesser” relationships is neglected. Networking and professional relationships are often impersonal. Family members will often lie to each other in favor of avoiding conflict. The emotional labor of service workers often goes underappreciated and undercompensated. Careers in the political sphere revolve heavily around maintaining a positive public image, and there are well-observed disparities between politicians’ stated values and …
