During 1974 and 1975 a diffuse source salinity study was conducted in east-central Utah. The specific objectives of this study were (a) to determine the role of overland flow on salt movement for selected land types, (b) to determine the relative magnitude of surface erosion associated with overland flow and its role in the salt release process, and (c) develop a non-point source loading function to predict salt production from diffuse sources.

Using greenhouse pot techniques, 32 drilling mud components were tested to see if, at a high rate of addition, they reduced plant growth. Green beans and sweet corn were the test plants. The excellent black, silt loam, slightly acidic, uncultivated Dagor soil (Cumulic Haploxeroll) was used for most tests. Rates used were considered to be abnormal level (high rate) and usual (low rate) amounts that might be added in commonly used drilling muds.

During 1973 and 1974 a water quality study was conducted in San Juan County, southeastern Utah. In 1973, baseline water quality data was collected from study locations which had been chained to remove pinyon-juniper vegetation six years earlier. The area had been chained under two different techniques: (1) doubled chained, with debris-left-in-place and (2) chained, with debris windrowed. An "undisturbed, natural" woodland was left between these two treatments in order to serve as a control area.

In the fall of 1973 and spring of 1974 secondary treatments of burning and grazing were superimposed upon the debris-in-place and windrowed sites, respectively. …

Soil surface treatments consisting of gully plugs and contour furrows were constructed as a means of reducing erosion and holding sediment on site.

To measure the effectiveness of the gully plugs and furrows, angle iron stakes and profile transects were installed to measure soils loss and accompanying change in the soil profile. The profile transects gave a reliable measure of the change in the height of the soil surface in constructed pits and across contour furrows. The effects of temperature, defoliation, light, and certain fall cultural practices on rest and hardiness of Gleason Elberta peach buds were studied. The influence of these factors on abscisic acid concentration in peach buds and a possible role of ABA in rest and hardiness of peach buds were also investigated.

Peach leaf buds enter rest in early fall, reach a rest intensity peak in early winter, then break rest as a chilling requirement is met. Complete defoliation before rest has begun will cause some leaf and flower buds to grow, while defoliation after rest has begun will not cause visible …

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the organic N in silty clay loam soil as an indicator of soil fertility. The incubation method was used in this study. The NO3 -N, the total N percent, and the organic matter were determined. The soil which was used in this study came from Evans Research Farm. The samples were taken from two different N experiments which were adjacent to each other. The soil samples were taken in October-November, 1973, after the crop had been harvested. Studies were conducted to better understand the effect of temperature, photoperiod, cultural practices, and growth regulators on the hardening and dehardening of peach tree wood.

Greenhouses were constructed to control temperatures to which peach trees were exposed. It was noted that hardening and dehardening usually followed the temperature fluctuation fairly closely. However, trees exposed to temperatures above 60 F (15.6 C) became hardy to 0 F (-17.8 C).

A photoperiodic response in regard to an increase or decrease in hardiness was not definitely observed in peach wood. Extended photoperiod did not produce any significant effect on hardiness. Defoliation, bloom date, …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between addition and subtraction as inverse operations, to determine how drill in addition facts will affect knowledge of subtraction facts; to infer, if possible, when addition is conceptualized as an operation with reversibility; and to determine at which grade levels a particular method of drill is effective.

Nitrogen fixation, as measured by the acetylene-ethylene assay, in the surface soils of southern Curlew Valley, Utah-Idaho was studied. The removal of nitrogen from the surface soil by precipitation runoff water was also studied, and the role of the soil-algae crust in preventing erosive loss of nitrogen was evaluated.

Nitrogen fixation during the study year was estimated to be less than 10 kg/ha. This level is probably sufficient to maintain steady-state on an annual basis in standing crop nitrogen in this environment.

Apparent increases in sales and price of rural land, recent changes in land taxing procedure and proposed land-use legislation have brought forth a number of land questions among legislators, public officials and the general citizenry of Utah. Structure of songs and organization of singing in 133 Fox Sparrows Passerella iliaca were studied during 2 breeding seasons in 3 geographically separate populations in northern Utah and southern Idaho. The structure of songs was analyzed with the aid of an audiospectrograph. The organization of the singing of songs in 56 birds was analyzed by applying Markov chain analyses to the sequences of songs uttered.

Songs were composed of syllable-types, of which 49 were recognized. Syllable-types could occur singly or be serially repeated within songs, but they were never fractured so that only a portion of one would be in …

Twenty-six first lactation dairy cattle were sampled biweekly for four months to determine the effect of five levels of nutrition on blood plasma corticoids, total and differential leucocytes, hemoglobin and packed cell volume. Cows completing their 305 day lactation during the four month sampling interval were removed from the experimental herd, but were sampled twice more.

It was hypothesized that cows on rations below NRC requirements for milk production would demonstrate stress symptoms of elevated plasma corticoids, elevated white blood count, neutrophilia and eosinopenia. The purpose of this study was to determine the consistency with which Extension workers in Utah interpret data elements for reporting Extension activities into State Extension Management Information System (SEMIS). Subsequent insight into the areas of greatest inconsistencies and in-service training needs were gained. Extension workers in Utah were asked to report a predetermined list of hypothetical activities on the SEMIS weekly report form. These together with other report forms of previously submitted reports of common activities were studied in detail. The original test and a revised test, written by the investigator, were used as the instrument. Development by man through the last half century has caused a number of changes in Bear Lake. These changes include the diversion of Bear River water into Bear Lake, the pumping of lake water back into the river, and the building of breakwaters and other obstructions along the shore of Bear Lake.

The diversion of Bear River water into the lake has resulted in a yearly addition of an estimated 36,000 metric tons of calcium into the lake, which has caused the precipitation of an estimated minimum 90,000 metric tons of aragonite. The pumping of Bear Lake water back into …

Mapleton, a small rural Utah community located on the benchlands between Hobble Creek Canyon and Spanish Fork Canyon fifty miles south of Salt Lake City, was settled in the late 1860s and early 1870s by Springvllle and Spanish Fork families who built their homes on their individual farms. These families did not follow traditional Mormon settlement patterns with a City of Zion plat as their guide; their community grew along quite different lines. Its inhabitants never heard a "call" nor did they have their land alloted to them by their church.

The effectiveness of two chelated zinc compounds in correcting zinc deficiencies was studied. Soil and foliar treatments were made to study possible residual zinc carry-over from one season to the next. Foliar treatments at various rates were applied to raise plant tissue zinc levels above deficiency levels. It was found that none of the treatments studied resulted in any substantial carry-over of zinc to the following year. All of the foliar zinc treatments resulted in an increase in leaf zinc content in all of the varieties of fruit studied. The level of zinc in the treated trees increased in proportion …

The purpose of this thesis is t o describe the occurrences, interrelationships, and possible origin of the metallic mineral deposits of the Bear River Range. In this study, 21 mineral deposits containing minerals of lead, iron, copper, manganese, and zinc with quartz and carbonate gangue minerals, are described and classified as low temperature epigenetic hydrothermal deposits. The deposits predominantly occur in Cambrian limestone and dolomite formations located below formations with a high shale content. The deposition occurred as fracture filling and replacement along fractures associated with Teritary Basin and Range normal faults and joints which generally trend northerly in the …

An assessment was made to determine the level of awareness among Utah public school special educators concerning the state's child abuse reporting laws and procedures. The assessment was made with a questionnaire developed by the author and mailed to those teachers involved with programs for the learning disabled, the emotionally disturbed, and the trainable and educable mentally retarded. Accompanying each questionnaire was a letter of transmittal and a self-addressed, stamped, return envelope. Two mailings were utilized, fourteen days apart, to achieve a useable 81.9% return.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the attitudes of Elementary Education students and Secondary Education students toward children and teaching differ significantly prior to and after student teaching and whether these attitudes show a significant change as a result of the student-teaching experience. The heat exchange during dry conditions in Curlew Valley for selected clear days is determined from recordings in 10 minute intervals. The two heat budget components, radiative exchange and heat flow in the soil, are studied in detail.

Maximum surface temperature due to radiative exchange above, assuming no heat loss by other components, is determined.

Reduction of surface temperature by heat conduction into the ground was calculated as a second step to solve the heat budget equation.

The purpose of this study was to mea sure secondary distributive education students' perceptions and attitudes toward their teacher coordinators in the Utah secondary schools . The student scores were then analyzed to determine if there were any differences which may be attributed to a specific teacher characteristic such as age, sex, teaching experience, vocational work experience, and academic preparation.

Immediately following the 1971 upland game season a questionnaire booklet was mailed to 2076 Utah farmers and ranchers (landholders) in five southern and six northern counties. Approximately 50 percent were returned containing usable Information.

Five categories of hunter access restriction were considered: 1) fee systems, 2) leases to private clubs, 3) pheasant hunting units, 4) posting ''Hunting by Permission Only," and 5) posting "No Hunting" or "No Trespassing. " Restriction of hunter access to private property occurred twice as frequently in northern counties as in southern counties. Nearly six of every ten northern landholders had an active hunter restriction program. …

The purpose of this paper is to provide interested rural Utah parties with a description of the financial structure and impacts of rural Utah manufacturing firms on the local and state economies. Direct interviews with plant managers were used to gather the necessary data.

Rural Utah manufacturing firms were grouped into nine different categories according to the type of product produced. Mean financial statements of each group were presented, with a breakdown of where each type of expenditure was made, whether locally, in-state, or out of state.

Data for this study was gathered by questionnaires completed by thirteen drill team directors, thirty-eight women physical education department heads at schools not having a drill team, fifty-six girls who were members of the precision drill team at their school and 416 girls who were not members of a precision drill team.

Drill team directors indicated strong feelings of success as to the organization and administration of their groups and also were positive as to the merits of precision drill teams in the junior high schools. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of cryotherapy versus no treatment in preventing blistering and tearing of the hands of twenty-six male college age gymnastics students at Utah State University.

The subjects were tested with a hand dynamometer to determine differences in grip strength between right and left hands. Two groups of thirteen subjects each were formed to equalize the differences in grip strength.
