Late Time Barium Cloud Striations And Their Possible Relationship To Equatorial Spread F, Michael C. Kelley, K. D. Baker, J. C. Ulwick
Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications
An active experiment has been conducted in space that allows a test for the theory of nonlinear development of striations in large barium clouds. The results are in excellent agreement with a computer simulation of the ExB instability reported by Scannapiecoe t al. (1976). The power law irregularity spectrum predicted by the theory and verified by the experiment is shown here to be due to wave steepeninga nd not_top lasmat urbulence.T he barium cloud resultsa re remarkably similar to bottomside equatorial spread F. A possible role of the E x B instability in bottomside equatorial spread F is discussed as …

Fire-Decay: Interactive Roles Regulating Wood Accumulation And Soil Development In The Northern Rocky Mountains, A. E. Harvey, M. J. Larsen, M. F. Jurgensen
Aspen Bibliography
Decay and fire play interactive roles in recycling wood and other organic materials in forest ecosystems, and contribute to the development of high quality soils in the Northern Rocky Mountains. Decayed wood, charcoal, and other decomposed organic matter are the principal media for ectomycorrhizal and nonsymbiotic nitrogen fixing microbes. The activities of these microbes are critical to the growth of forest trees. The balance between decay and fire, as it affects the amount, distribution, and type of organic matter, controls the ability of forest soils to support the growth of trees.

Knowledge of the biotic and abiotic factors producing long and short-term changes in numbers provides the basis for managing wildlife populations. Frequently, evaluation of these factors over a long time period is impossible. the large, well-documented past fluctuations of mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) numbers on Arizona's North Kaibab plateau (Rasmussen, 1941; Russo, 1964; Caughley, 1970; Burk, 1973) make it potentially useful for examining long-term effects.

A Classification Of Spruce-Fir And Mixed Conifer Habitat Types Of Arizona And New Mexico, William H. Moir, John A. Ludwig
Aspen Bibliography
Spruce-fir forests occupy less than 0.5% of Arizona and about 2% of New Mexico. Despite this limited distribution, these high elevation forests are important resources, providing major snow catchement and watershed areas and serving as focal points for winter and summer recreation. The subtending mixed conifer forests, covering about 3% and 4% of Arizona and New Mexico, respectively, are intensively utilized for timber, range and wildlife production, watershed management, and recreation. These forest types respond in complex ways to many man-caused and natural impacts and treatments such as timber harvesting, fire, recreation usage, and foraging by livestock and game.

Grazing impact by elk and moose has been a point of concern in Jackson Hole for many years. Concern has been primarily directed towards sparsely vegetated south aspects, aspen stands, and willow bottoms. Numerous transects have quantified heavy foliage utilization. Trend studies have been mostly inconclusive. Study of historical narratives have quantified heavy forage utilization. Trend studies have been mostly inconclusive. Study of historical narratives, early photographs and consideration of plant physiology, soils data, and fire ecology have aided interpretations of vegetal trend and plant succession in recent years. Photographs show little change on sparsely vegetated sites. Soils information on …

Phytoalexin Production By Aspen (Populus Tremuloides Michx.) In Response To Infection By Hypoxylon Mammatum (Wahl.) Mill. And Alternaria Spp, G. Flores, M. Hubbes
Aspen Bibliography
Freshly wounded stem sections of P. tremuloides Michx. produce phytoalexin when inoculated with mycelium of Hypoxylon mammatum (Wahl.) Mill., and Alternaria sp. These exudates are inhibitory against spore germination of these two fungi and, although inhibitory against mycelial growth of Alternaria sp., have no effect on the mycelial growth of H. mammatum. It was possible to correlate the amount of phytoalexin elicited by different strains with the inhibitory activity.
