Social Interaction Patterns Among Employees In Sheltered And Nonprofit Business Settings, Benjamin Lignugaris / Kraft, Charles L. Salzberg, J. J. Stowitschek, E. K. Mcconaughy

Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling Faculty Publications

Recently, researchers have identified a number of social behaviors considered important for job success. Important social skills for entry-level employees include following instructions, clarifying instructions, providing assistance, and providing job-related information to co-workers (Buehler, 1969; Johnson & Mithaug, 1978; Rusch, Schutz, & Agran, 1982; Salzberg, Agran, & Lignugaris/Kraft, in press). Researchers have also recognized that these behaviors must be examined in the context in which they occur in the workplace (Berkson & Romer, 1980; Brody & Stoneman, 1977).

The context of a social interaction might be described in terms of the job setting in which the interaction occurs (e.g., restaurant, …

The application of the Monte Carlo method on the estimation in Gumbel extreme value distribution was studied. The Gumbel extreme value distribution is used to estimate the flood flow of specific return period for the design of flood mitigation project. This paper is a programming effort (1) to estimate the parameters of Gumbel distribution using the observed data and (2) to provide a random variate generating subroutine to generate random samples and order statistics of a Gumbel distribution random variable. The mean squared error is used to measure the accuracy of the estimation method. Finally, an example of the use …

Optimizing The Rapid Evolution Of Target Groundwater Potentiometric Surfaces, Richard C. Peralta, Krzysztof G. Kowalski Jan 1986

Optimizing The Rapid Evolution Of Target Groundwater Potentiometric Surfaces, Richard C. Peralta, Krzysztof G. Kowalski

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

THE long-term availability of adequate groundwater for sustainable irrigated agricultural production can be assured by causing the evolution and maintenance of an appropriate potentiometric (piezometric) surface in utilized aquifers. By providing adequate saturated thickness and hydraulic gradients and heads. such a surface affords some protection from the effects of drought. economic: hardship, and environmental or legal complications. Procedures for determining desirable or optimal regional steady-state groundwater potentiometric surfaces have been reported by several researchers. An existing polcmiometric surface can be forced to evolve into a desirable 'target' surface if it is subjected through time to the proper combination of recharges …

The Role Of Plant Hormones In Grass Tiller Development, Marit Snow Jan 1986

The Role Of Plant Hormones In Grass Tiller Development, Marit Snow

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Two bunchgrass species commonly found in the Intermountain West, Agropyron spicatum and A. desertorum, are morphologically similar but respond to defoliation very differently. A. desertorum produces more daughter tillers and is more hardy than A. spicatum. Hormones were applied to experimental plants to observe changes in tillering rates, growth rates, and response of plants to the stress of exogenous hormone application. Gibberellic acid treatments were related to increased tiller height in both species, but also a decrease in daughter tiller production in A. desertorum and an increase in senescence in A. spicatum. Kinetin increased senescence in A. desertorum. Auxin showed …

Potential Arkansas And White Rivers Water Available For Diversion To The Grand Prairie, W. Douglass Dixon, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

At the present time. the rate of groundwater use in the Grand Prairie region of Arkansas exceeds natural replenishment of the underlying aquifer. Most of the groundwater is used for agricultural production. [f current agricultural water needs of the region are to be satisfied under sustained yield conditions. supplemental surface water will be required. The objective of this study is to assess the viability of the Arkansas and White Rivers as sources of supplemental water for meeting water needs in excess of those which can be met with groundwater.

Maintaining Target Groundwater Levels Using Goal‑Programming: Linear And Quadratic Methods, Amin Yazdanian, Richard C. Peralta Jan 1986

Maintaining Target Groundwater Levels Using Goal‑Programming: Linear And Quadratic Methods, Amin Yazdanian, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Sustained-yield groundwater management strategies can be designed to closely maintain preassigned 'target' levels. Quadratic and linear goal-programming objective functions are used in two distinct models which minimize the sum of differences between 'target' and regionally optimized sets of groundwater levels. Constraints and bounds imposed on extractions, recharge and heads in each model assure that developed strategies are physically feasible and sustainable. The linear model is computationally more time-efficient, but numerical difficulties due to equality constraints are encountered when it is applied to large groundwater systems_ The quadratic model requires less computer storage and is applied to the Grand Prairie of …

Optimal Modification Of Regional Potentiometric Surface Design For Groundwater Contaminant Containment, Bithin Datta, Richard C. Peralta Jan 1986

Optimal Modification Of Regional Potentiometric Surface Design For Groundwater Contaminant Containment, Bithin Datta, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

A procedure for optimal modification of a regional potentiometric surface designed solely on the basis of quantitative considerations, is presented. The modification in the potentiometric surface is necessary to incorporate groundwater quality criteria in a critical subsystem of the entire region. The resulting optimal regional potentiometric surface ensures: sustained groundwater yields from the aquifer, compliance with water quality constraints at critical cells of the sub· system (which are identified by a solute transport simulation model), and the most economic conjunctive management of surface and groundwater.

Automatic Ordering Of Program Units For Execution, Ronald D. Williams Jan 1986

Automatic Ordering Of Program Units For Execution, Ronald D. Williams

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

A program written in today's sequential programming languages must be written according to a rule which states that source instructions must be written in their exact order of execution. A better rule would be to let the programmer write the instructions in any order he wants- - then let a program figure out the proper order of execution. Such a system applies not only to individual instructions in a procedure or program, but to procedures in a program and to programs in a job stream.

This paper and its associated automatic ordering program introduce a method by which instructions can …

Comparison Of Preparative Techniques For Scanning Electron Microscopy Examination Of Soybean Seed Coats In Sectional View, Daniel M. Baker, Harry C, Minor, Merton F. Brown Dec 1985

Comparison Of Preparative Techniques For Scanning Electron Microscopy Examination Of Soybean Seed Coats In Sectional View, Daniel M. Baker, Harry C, Minor, Merton F. Brown

Scanning Electron Microscopy

Various scanning electron microscopy preparative techniques have been used by researchers to examine sectional views of dry, mature soybean (Glycine~ CL.) Merr.) seed coats. Such previously employed techniques were utilized In our preliminary investigations of seed coat structure, but often yielded unacceptable preservation. Consequently, eight preparative techniques were evaluated In an effort to define conditions required to obtain consistently high quality preservation of soybean seed coats In sectional view. Of the eight procedures tested with the cultivar Williams 82, razor sections and mechanical fractures of dry seed coats yielded the poorest definition of anatomical features. Samples soaked In water prior …

Long Term Effects Of Radiation And Combined Modalities On Mouse Lung, David P. Penney, Paul Van Houtte, Dietmar W. Siemann, Wayne A. Rosenkrans Jr., Philip Rubin, Robert A. Cooper Jr. Dec 1985

Long Term Effects Of Radiation And Combined Modalities On Mouse Lung, David P. Penney, Paul Van Houtte, Dietmar W. Siemann, Wayne A. Rosenkrans Jr., Philip Rubin, Robert A. Cooper Jr.

Scanning Electron Microscopy

The lung appears to be the major dose-limiting organ in radiation of the thorax. Early responses (<1 week) involve the type II pneumocyte and increased surfactant biosynthesis and secretion. Later changes, which appear to be related to the surfactant response, lead to classical radiation pneumonitis, which is often fatal. Animals which survive radiation pneumonitis develop progressive fibrosis, a late-appearing response, which reduces compliance and available air space, and is usually fatal. This study centers on the fine structural changes in the lungs of LAF1 mice, 63 weeks following various radiation exposures (5-13 Gy). Doses which are subthreshold in evoking surfactant and pneumonitic responses precipitate fibrosis and atelectasis by 63 weeks, and involve type II pneumocyte sloughing and degeneration. Of the two major deterrents to lung irradiation (pneumonitis and fibrosis), these results suggest that fibrosis always follows pneumonitis, but pneumonitis is not a necessary preliminary step to fibrosis. Bleomycin elicits several morphological alterations characteristic of radiation, and, when combined with the latter, appears to exacerbate radiation effects.

Characterization Of Small Metallic Clusters By Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy, M. Acheche, C. Colliex, P. Trebbia Dec 1985

Characterization Of Small Metallic Clusters By Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy, M. Acheche, C. Colliex, P. Trebbia

Scanning Electron Microscopy

Small spherical tin and gallium clusters (diameters in the range 2 to 80 nm), prepared with a liquid metal ion source, were analysed in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Both volume and surface plasmon excitations were investigated and their dependence on the cluster size interpreted by classical and quantum mechanical models. A blue shift of the volume plasmon energy with decreasing radius R of the cluster was clearly detected. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the peak, related to the damping of the volume plasmon excitation, showed a dependence in 1/R. …

Kinematics Of Great Basin Intraplate Extension From Earthquake, Geodetic And Geologic Information, Paul Kendall Eddington Dec 1985

Kinematics Of Great Basin Intraplate Extension From Earthquake, Geodetic And Geologic Information, Paul Kendall Eddington

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Strain rates assessed from brittle fracture, associated with earthquakes, and total brittle-ductile deformation measured from geodetic data have been compared to paleostrain from Quaternary geology for the intraplate Great Basin of the western United States. These data provide an assessment of the kinematics and mode of lithospheric extension that the western U.S. Cordillera has experienced in the last 5-10 million years. Strain and deformation rates were determined by the seismic moment tensor method using historic seismicity and fault plane solutions. By subdividing the Great Basin into areas of homogeneous strain it was possible to examine regional variations in the strain …

Measuring Local And Group Benefit From Subsidized (Public) Subsidy, Allen D. Lebaron Dec 1985

Measuring Local And Group Benefit From Subsidized (Public) Subsidy, Allen D. Lebaron

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

It is convenient to divide publicly supported investments into those having primarily productivity enhancement goals and those that have welfare (consumption) goals. By and large, "production" type projects are the main target of feasibility analysis. This is primarily due to the fact that production projects by definition can gwenerate measurable benefits and maybe partially to the fact that the more a project appears to create a public good (generate wholly consumptive [ion] benefits) the less concern the general taxpayer has about the incidence of subsidy.

Estimating Employees' True Cost-Of-Living Indexes In The Southwestern Region: Case Of Metropolitan Denver, Charles A. Diamond, Peter J. Saunders Dec 1985

Estimating Employees' True Cost-Of-Living Indexes In The Southwestern Region: Case Of Metropolitan Denver, Charles A. Diamond, Peter J. Saunders

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Many times, advances at the frontiers of econometrics take a long time before being put to work solving practical business problems. This is not the case with the recently published generalized Fechner-Thurstone (GFT) direct utility function which enables decision makers to estimate more accurately changes in the true cost of living. The cost-of-living indexes presented here require no statistical estimation and, therefore, can be constructed from available published sources. The indexes are calculated for the U.S. and the Denver metropolitan are and compared with the published CPI-U and CPI-W for both areas. To show the cost savings possible by a …

Interactive Modification Of Quadratic Multiobjective Water Resources Planning Strategies, Paul J. Killian, Richard C. Peralta Dec 1985

Interactive Modification Of Quadratic Multiobjective Water Resources Planning Strategies, Paul J. Killian, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

An interactive method is presented for modifying a mtltiobjective water resources planning strategy by changing constraining conditions on regional objectives and local variables. The method is illustrated by modifying a conjunctive use. sustained groundwater withdrawal strategy for minimizing the cost of meeting regional water demand on the Arkansas Grand Prairie. The strategy was developed using a model in which the finite difference form of the two-dimensional groundwater flow equation is embedded in an optimization process. The quadratic optimization is accomplished by utilizing the General Differential Algorithm to obtain values of drawdown. pumping. and recharge in each finite difference cell. Results …

(E,2e) Spectroscopic Investigations Of The Spectral Momentum Densities Of Thin Carbon Films, John Robert Dennison Dec 1985

(E,2e) Spectroscopic Investigations Of The Spectral Momentum Densities Of Thin Carbon Films, John Robert Dennison

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

An (e,2e) electron scattering spectrometer has been constructed and used for the first time to investigate the spectral momentum density of the valence bands of a solid target. This technique provides fundamental information about the electronic structure of both crystalline and amorphous solids. The three fundamental quantities, the band structure, electron density of states, and electron momentum distribution can be simultaneously derived from the measured (e,2e) cross section.

A review of single electron and (e,2e) scattering theory is given with an emphasis on scattering from solids. The effects of multiple scattering are discussed and a method of deconvoluting those effects …

Opportunities For Electron Microscopy In Space Radiation Biology, J. T. Lett Nov 1985

Opportunities For Electron Microscopy In Space Radiation Biology, J. T. Lett

Scanning Electron Microscopy

Densely ionizing, particulate radiations in outer space are likely to cause to mammalian tissues biological damage that is particularly amenable to examination by the techniques of electron microscopy. This situation arises primarily from the fact that once the density of ionization along the particle track exceeds a certain value, small discrete lesions involving many adjacent cells may be caused in organized tissues. Tissue damage produced by ionization densities below the critical value also afford opportunities for electron microscopic evaluation, as is shown by the damage produced in optic and proximate tissues of the New Zealand white rabbit in terrestrial experiments. …
