- Resveratrol is a antioxidative phytoalexin which has been shown to be beneficial to embryos in certain conditions by reducing oxidative stress. [1]
- Previous studies have shown that use of resveratrol in in vitro culture (IVC) media significantly increased blastocyst rate. [2]
- The aim of this study is to determine the effect of resveratrol supplementation in in vitro maturation (IVM) media in addition to IVC supplementation on cleavage rates and blastocyst rates
Effect Of Medium On Epigenetics In Fertilized And Cloned Embryos, Ethan Loertscher
Effect Of Medium On Epigenetics In Fertilized And Cloned Embryos, Ethan Loertscher
Student Research Symposium
- The metabolic pathways that oocytes and embryos take during early development have an important effect on epigenetic events. This leads to the question of whether different cultures affect epigenetics.
- There are some concerns that serum-containing mediums may be correlated with poor health outcomes.
- Acetylation of lysine 9 on histone 3 is associated with chromatin configurations. The intensity of H3K9ac is much lower in cloned embryos (somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT)) than what is seen in normal embryos
- This study was aiming to compare IVF and SCNT embryos cultured in a medium containing serum and a medium …

A Comparison Of Gray Wolf Home Range Estimates, James Dye
A Comparison Of Gray Wolf Home Range Estimates, James Dye
Student Research Symposium
For this study we use GPS collar data from two wolf populations in Turkey and Croatia to compare their home ranges in order to determine which populations home ranges are larger. These two populations live in similar climates but have different impacts from human activity. The wolf population in Turkey experiences larger human presence and almost no natural prey availability, while in Croatia the wolf population exists in a more natural habitat with a substantial natural prey base. This creates an interesting comparison between the two populations and raises the question which average home range would be larger.
Searching For Commonalities In Secondary Structure Of Prmt Targets With Python Programming, Emeline Haroldsen
Searching For Commonalities In Secondary Structure Of Prmt Targets With Python Programming, Emeline Haroldsen
Student Research Symposium
PRMT is an enzyme that:
- Methylates protein targets without use of a consensus sequence
- Has implications in embryonic development, carcinogenesis, cardiac health and many other diseases1,2,3
- Has 9 isoforms. Native PRMT1 is tetrameric (figure 1)
The mechanisms underlying PRMT target recognition and binding are unknown, limiting the study of PRMT related diseases. However: •
- Proteomics have identified thousands of PRMT targets4
- Commonalities in secondary structure may indicate a recognition element2
- Prior research predicted (with JPred5) a surprising proportion (20.35%) of target methylation sites within alpha helices of proteins (figure 2).
Leavening Agents Substitution In Chocolate Chip Muffins, Cassie Alder, Ashley Dawes, Savannah Harbison
Leavening Agents Substitution In Chocolate Chip Muffins, Cassie Alder, Ashley Dawes, Savannah Harbison
Student Research Symposium
The primary function of leavening agents in baking is to cause the dough or batter to rise, allowing the baked product to be less dense, have more volume and be more aesthetically pleasing.1 The three main types of leavening agents are baking powder, yeast, and the production of carbon dioxide steam as the product is baked.2 These different types of leavening agents behave very differently and the purpose of this experiment was to discover and record the differences that occur in chocolate chip muffins. This research is important because if baking powder is unavailable the research shows what …

Thickened Carbonated Beverages, Adam Hair, Marissa Cook, Clarissa Richins
Student Research Symposium
Dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, affects many individuals around the world with an array of underlying medical conditions, and rates of dysphagia are expected to increase as the population ages1,2. Dysphagia affects the swallowing reflex, which can lead to a greater risk of aspiration and subsequent infections. In order to mitigate this, thin liquids are thickened following IDDSI standards so they can be more easily swallowed by those with dysphagia. Research has shown that carbonation in beverages improves the swallowing reflex over non-carbonated beverages1. There are different methods and products that can be used to thicken beverages …
Effects On Cytokine Supplementation On Bovine Embryo Development, Pratt Griffeth
Effects On Cytokine Supplementation On Bovine Embryo Development, Pratt Griffeth
Student Research Symposium
- Artificial reproductive techniques (ARTs), such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF), allow for embryo production beyond what is naturally possible.
- To conduct IVF oocytes must reach maturity via in-vitro maturation (IVM), be fertilized by IVF, and the resulting embryos cultured via in-vitro culture (IVC).
- Modifications in maturation media and culture media are often tested experimentally to increase effectiveness of ARTs.
- Researchers have found that supplementing a group of three cytokines (fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2), leukemia inhibiting factor (LIF), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1), together known as FLI) in maturation media improved oocyte maturation in pigs and bovine cloning success.1-2

Voltage Scaled Low Power Dnn Accelerator Design On Reconfigurable Platform, Rourab Paul, Sreetama Sarkar, Suman Sau, Sanghamitra Roy, Koushik Chakraborty, Amlan Chakrabarti
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
The exponential emergence of Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) has accelerated research on hardware implementation of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs). Among all DNN processors, domain-specific architectures such as Google’s Tensor Processor Unit (TPU) have outperformed conventional GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) and CPUs (Central Processing Units). However, implementing low-power TPUs in reconfigurable hardware remains a challenge in this field. Voltage scaling, a popular approach for energy savings, can be challenging in FPGAs, as it may lead to timing failures if not implemented appropriately. This work presents an ultra-low-power FPGA implementation of a TPU for edge applications. We divide the systolic array of …
A Scalable Approach To Minimize Charging Costs For Electric Bus Fleets, Daniel Mortensen, Jacob Gunther
A Scalable Approach To Minimize Charging Costs For Electric Bus Fleets, Daniel Mortensen, Jacob Gunther
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Incorporating battery electric buses into bus fleets faces three primary challenges: a BEB’s extended refuel time, the cost of charging, both by the consumer and the power provider, and large compute demands for planning methods. When BEBs charge, the additional demands on the grid may exceed hardware limitations, so power providers divide a consumer’s energy needs into separate meters even though doing so is expensive for both power providers and consumers. Prior work has developed a number of strategies for computing charge schedules for bus fleets; however, prior work has not worked to reduce costs by aggregating meters. Additionally, because …
Revitalizing Soil Health For Climate Resilience In Africa: The Need For High Rates Of Carbon Inputs, Idowu A. Atoloye
Revitalizing Soil Health For Climate Resilience In Africa: The Need For High Rates Of Carbon Inputs, Idowu A. Atoloye
Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications
Enhancing soil health is critical to improve crop productivity, fertilizer use efficiency, and resilience to climate change impacts for smallholder farmers in Africa. Increasing the use of mineral fertilizers is critical for achieving higher crop yield and residue return. However, it is crucial to consider the simultaneous use of carbon (C)-rich organic materials alongside mineral fertilizers to support soil health and enhance fertilizer use efficiency. It is proposed that increasing mineral fertilizer use without a concurrent increase in C-rich organic materials may not enhance soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil health in the long term. When the labile pool of …

Language Shapes Your Reality, Emily Staley
Language Shapes Your Reality, Emily Staley
Student Research Symposium
Culture and Language walk hand in hand. Cultural stereotypes exist abundantly, and part of that stereotype exists within the cultural language. Certain speech patterns correspond to particular behaviors. Italians, for example, are known for being very passionate, loud, and romantic. One might say that they are very ‘Italian’.
In fact, most cultures with Latin rooted languages are stereotyped for being passionate and expressive. German, Dutch and Russian cultures are known for being direct and straightforward. Japanese, Korean, and Chinese cultures are known for having more passive, non-confrontational stereotypes. Cultures with similar languages tend to have similar stereotypes.
Color Dynamics: An Exploration Of Language And Color, Elizabeth Stanger
Color Dynamics: An Exploration Of Language And Color, Elizabeth Stanger
Student Research Symposium
There is evidence that color terms develop in a specific order in each language. This order can be seen in the hopscotch above. First, a term for black and white (or dark and light in general), then red, yellow and green interchangeably, blue, and then brown. The colors pink, purple, orange, and grey develop around the same time and don't display hierarchical trends. Finaly, a color term for light blue is developed. In languages like Spanish and Russian, their term for this color is completely separate from blue.

My mother has always been a maker. My entire life, I have heard her sewing machine whirring as often as I have seen her face. She was, in particular, an amazing quilter, spending hours, weeks, months on intricate & exquisite compositions, often just to give them away to friends or family after. It’s always been a part of her, so when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in January of 2022, her imminent loss of her ability to sew was devastating. In the wake of this news, I began to take my first real interest in her quilts. I even …
Dynamics Of Rotating 2d Ellipse In Stratified Flow, Anton Kadomtsev
Dynamics Of Rotating 2d Ellipse In Stratified Flow, Anton Kadomtsev
Student Research Symposium
-
In nature, there exist innumerable flows with varying density, known as stratified flows.
-
The density variation is caused by salt content or temperature variation.
-
Submersibles in stratified flows approximated by spheroid.
-
Fluid parcels perturbed from their neutral position gain potential energy, which becomes kinetic energy. Inherent oscillation is Brunt-Väisälä frequency.
-
Stratification affects the flow structures and forces on bodies.

Visuality Of Sound, Janelle Clark
Visuality Of Sound, Janelle Clark
Student Research Symposium
Graphic design is simply a visual representation of abstract concepts and communication to help people understand a message. Humans have created language and used sound to represent visuals, yet it goes much deeper than that. While sound and language can represent human defined objects based on cultural experience, there is an actual visual language behind sound itself. This field is called Cymatics, termed by Dr. Hans Jenny, a pioneer in the study of the visuality of sound. His research, along with more to follow have laid the groundwork of a previous unseen language. In this research, elements of the natural …
