Climate change insurance: planting aspen seedlings as fuel breaks
Catherine Schloegel, Program Manager, The Nature Conservancy, Boulder, Colorado
Jordan Mead, Resource Specialist, Summit County Open Space and Trails Department, Frisco, Colorado
As climate impacts accelerate, mountain communities living near forested areas across the West will be at increasing risk of more frequent wildfires. To protect neighborhoods from high-severity wildfires, land managers frequently clear strips of forest around homes and roads. We examined the potential to plant true aspen seedlings in these fuel breaks to increase habitat diversity while maintaining a reduced risk of wildfire. Historically, aspen has acted as a …

This thesis is a collection of poetry that mixes formal and free verse in order to convey the speaker’s spiritual journey in content as well as form. The work introduces a speaker who is deeply religious and who expresses her spirituality in the form of formal poetry such as sonnets as she adheres to certain principles of faith. The use of form in the thesis represents her adherence to those principles, while breaking form is symbolic of her breaking away from those principles. Through the work, the speaker experiences a shift from frustration with the world and its apparent obfuscation …
Squaring The Circle, Carter Pasma
Squaring The Circle, Carter Pasma
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
“Squaring the circle” is often used as a metaphor for trying to do the impossible. In many ways, this relates directly to my life and the path I have chosen as a ceramic artist. Living in a world of mass production, people often overlook and under appreciate handmade objects. The pots I create are designed to make the person using them notice and appreciate the thoughtfulness of something handmade.
It is comforting to make objects that will ultimately be used to enhance someone’s daily routine. Reflecting on this as a ceramic artist is what drives me to create pots that …
Drip Irrigation And Water Conservation In Onions; An Economic Analysis, Jenny De Boer
Drip Irrigation And Water Conservation In Onions; An Economic Analysis, Jenny De Boer
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
Water diversions for irrigated agriculture have contributed to increased water stress in drought prone areas across the globe. Previous research finds that farmers increase irrigation intensity per unit of product grown, increase total area under irrigation, and switch to more water intensive crops to increase yields and compensate for the cost of drip irrigation installation. Other studies have shown that drip irrigation can produce yields that parity surface irrigated yields or even surpass them using less water and increasing profits. Ultimately this plot trial showed drip irrigated onion yields were 6.31% greater than surface irrigated onion yields using an average …

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
The goal of the American education system is to prepare students for college. I wondered, “Do students feel ready?” That question led me to investigate the literature on the development, implementation, and effectiveness of our current standards. The gap I found was that the standards do not address an important aspect of student achievement, that of student self-efficacy. Self-efficacy in writing helps students have the confidence to engage in the task of writing, regardless of the situation. I focused my study of student writing self-efficacy on one English 1010 class. I administered a self-efficacy evaluation in class and conducted a …

Do Poor Countries Catch Up To Rich Countries? Structural Change In The World-Economy, 1816-1916, Jared Walker
Do Poor Countries Catch Up To Rich Countries? Structural Change In The World-Economy, 1816-1916, Jared Walker
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Do poor countries catch up to rich countries? To answer that question, countries were divided into upper class (core), middle class (semi-periphery), and lower class (periphery) based on degree of industrialization as indicated by primary energy consumption data. Findings indicated twenty-three upward transitions and five downward transitions during the period examined. Asymmetrical upward mobility was understood in the context of geographic expansion of the system. This sufficiently increased the population of the lower class (periphery) to support larger populations in the middle class (semi-periphery) and upper class (core). Nevertheless, probability analysis indicated a stable system characterized by high levels of …

For instance, training BSS to implement empirically supported behavioral strategies, such as functional behavior assessment and function-based intervention selection, may have benefits for both staff and students alike. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to develop an interactive …
The Effects Of Aboveground Herbivory On Root Traits And Root Decomposition, Emily A. Chavez
The Effects Of Aboveground Herbivory On Root Traits And Root Decomposition, Emily A. Chavez
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Soil holds more carbon (C) than the Earth's atmosphere and vegetation combined. Soil loses carbon through soil respiration and releases CO2 from the soil. The soil respiration rate can vary based on the chemistry of the plant litter inputs and physical factors, such as soil temperature and nutrient content. In Alaska's Yukon-Kuskokwim (YK) Delta, grazing by geese affects the chemistry of plants and the soil's physical qualities, thus altering the rate of soil respiration. Although we know that goose herbivory leads to changes in the rate of soil respiration, we know very little about how goose herbivory affects the …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
With the growing population of linguistically, racially, and culturally diverse students in U.S. public schools, there is increasing disjuncture between current standardized policies and practices and the varied ways of knowing, being, and languaging of heterogeneous youth. Social studies researchers and educators have implemented culturally responsive, relevant, and sustaining pedagogies as tools to combat inequities within schooling for linguistically minoritized youth. To explore how the field of social studies has operationalized these pedagogies in research and practice, I conducted a critical interpretive synthesis of literature from 1995-present. In so doing, I used a raciolinguistic theoretical perspective to explore how social …
Evaluating Aspen Seedling Outplanting Success Following High Severity Wildfire In The Southwest, Sarah M. Kapel
Evaluating Aspen Seedling Outplanting Success Following High Severity Wildfire In The Southwest, Sarah M. Kapel
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) is an ecologically important forest species in the western U.S. Aspen forests host a variety of understory species, are critical wildlife habitat, and are considered a "natural fuel break" since they are less likely to support crown fires than conifers. Because of climate change and altered disturbance regimes, populations are declining, and innovative strategies are needed to restore aspen. Planting aspen seedlings is a solution, though not a common practice in the West and has been met with high mortality in past experiments. For aspen planting to be more broadly implemented, managers need guidance …
Exploring The Role Of Near Channel Geospatial Attributes To Predict Suspended Sediment Concentration Patterns Across The Conus Region, Aaron J. Sigman
Exploring The Role Of Near Channel Geospatial Attributes To Predict Suspended Sediment Concentration Patterns Across The Conus Region, Aaron J. Sigman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
High concentrations of suspended sediment (SSC) in a river can represent a critical water quality concern, reduce the storage capacity of reservoirs, and impact aquatic habitat. The total amount of sediment is calculated from a combination of river properties, including the amount of available sediment and the flow of water carrying the sediment. Water flow properties can be found using local information about the channel, however understanding the concentration of sediment in the river requires understanding the supply of sediment from the watershed. To understand where sediment is coming from, we examined over 1000 United States Geological Survey sites with …

Radical Antiracism And Anti-Queerphobia In Politicised Education Environments Through Critical Race Theory And Queer Theory, Mina Aubrey Weeks
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
In 2023, the Utah legislature passed bills that alter how secondary education teachers can talk about “divisive topics,” usually referring to topics of race, LGBTQ, or other systemic topics like classism and nationalism. Many teachers committed to anti-racism and anti-queerphobia do not want to water down topics of race and LGBTQ, but they also do not want to lose their jobs for teaching race and LGBTQ in a way that the law restricts. Critical Race Theory and Queer Theory have typically been framed as anti-White, anti-cishet, or overall divisive by State critics due to their radical ideologies, but this comes …
Advancing Near Surface Soil Moisture Measurements Using Robotics, Automation, And Remote Sensing, Hemanth Narayan Dakshinamurthy
