Feature Selection In Multivariate Time Series Data For Enhanced Solar Flare Classification, Yagnashree Velanki
Feature Selection In Multivariate Time Series Data For Enhanced Solar Flare Classification, Yagnashree Velanki
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Solar flares are powerful eruptions of energy from the Sun that can cause disruptions to technology here on Earth, like communication systems, GPS, and power grids. To help manage these risks, it’s important to accurately identify and classify these solar flares before they cause problems. In our research, we focused on improving how we classify solar flares by looking at large sets of complex data collected over time. We used several techniques to find the most important factors that help us tell different types of solar flares apart. Each method has its strengths, so instead of relying on just one, …
Examining The Impacts Of Demographics, Individual Experiences, And Perceptions On Range Anxiety And Electric Vehicle Road Trips, Joshua Ward
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Range anxiety is perhaps the most widely cited barrier to electric vehicle (EV) adoption and use. Range anxiety is generally defined as a general fear that an EV has insufficient battery range or that there is insufficient charging infrastructure to travel from one place to another. Although this barrier is widely cited, there is little research that investigates how EV drivers experience range anxiety and how it might vary based on personal characteristics, perceptions, and experiences. Data on long-distance EV trips is also scarce in the United States and mainly limited to personal stories of an EV road trip.

Understanding And Influencing Public Concerns About Prescribed Fire Use In Utah, Brooke Richards
Understanding And Influencing Public Concerns About Prescribed Fire Use In Utah, Brooke Richards
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Prescribed fire is beneficial for improving forest health and reducing wildfire risk, which is especially important for residents who live near forested areas. To expand the use of prescribed fire, Utah land managers must first ensure there is public support. Therefore, better understanding public concerns and what shapes their beliefs about prescribed fire can help managers improve outreach and education methods. Through interviews with south-central Utah land managers, private landowners, and Health departments employees, a focus group discussion with Park City natural resource managers, and observation of Summit County public commentary, two outreach messages were suggested to address the five …
Are Universities Adequately Preparing Undergraduate Students For Careers As Professional Wildlife Biologists?, Trevon D. Strange
Are Universities Adequately Preparing Undergraduate Students For Careers As Professional Wildlife Biologists?, Trevon D. Strange
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
The demands for diversely skilled wildlife biologists and scientific researchers in the wildlife profession are projected to increase. Increasing urbanization has affected wildlife management, and the recruitment of future wildlife professionals. Thus, state and federal supervisors in agencies that hire wildlife professionals are concerned that recent graduates of university wildlife programs lack the necessary skill-sets to address these complex contemporary wildlife management issues. My research sought to identify where the educational performance gaps may exist between university wildlife programs, wildlife agencies, and student expectations. To conduct my research, I evaluated undergraduate wildlife curricula offered by 42 accredited universities listed on …
Multidecadal Data Demonstrate The Role Of Climate And Natural History Traits In Shaping Butterfly Phenology, Gbolahan Anthony Reis
Multidecadal Data Demonstrate The Role Of Climate And Natural History Traits In Shaping Butterfly Phenology, Gbolahan Anthony Reis
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Climate change is transforming the natural world, altering the timing of key events in the lives of plants and animals, such as when flowers bloom or when butterflies take flight. These timing changes, known as phenology shifts, can disrupt ecosystems and species interactions, creating ripple effects through food webs and biodiversity. While scientists have studied these shifts for decades, much of the focus has been on simple metrics, like the first or last day a butterfly is seen flying each year. However, these measures do not tell the whole story of how climate change is impacting the entire flight season …

The Geoarchaeology Of An Early Agricultural Landscape On Clear Creek, Fremont Indian State Park, Utah, Michael D. Bianchini
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Clear Creek is a major Fremont early agricultural landscape in central Utah. The Fremont culture occupied the northern Colorado Plateau and the eastern Great Basin for approximately 1,000 years between AD 300–1300. This study builds an alluvial chronology that details the local history of alluvial fan development and erosion and examines the geoarchaeological context at Five Finger Ridge, the major occupation site in the valley. Geochronologic dating of sediment deposits, analyses of sediment types, AMS radiocarbon dating, and optically stimulated luminescence dating (OSL) ages has helped identify geomorphic contexts of Fremont agriculture in Clear Creek Canyon. This study focuses on …
Quantitative Evaluation Of Baseflow Separation Methods Using An Integrated Hydrologic Model: A Case Study In A Snow-Dominated Watershed, Jihad Othman
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
Baseflow, commonly referred to as the groundwater contribution to streamflow, constitutes approximately 50% of streamflow in mountainous regions of the Western United States. Accurately quantifying the amount of baseflow is critical for water management and decision-making, as it significantly impacts stream water quality, low flow availability, and ecosystem health. Traditionally, baseflow has been estimated using conceptual and automated baseflow separation methods, which are known to be both arbitrary and ambiguous, posing a challenge to validate them. In this study, we developed an integrated hydrologic model that seamlessly integrated the exchange between surface and subsurface flows to physically quantify the baseflow …

Quantitative Analysis Of Protective Effect Of Resveratrol Against Nanoplastic-Induced Oxidative Stress, Bryan Gustafson
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
Nanoplastics and microplastics are a growing ecological and health concern due to their widespread prevalence. The effects of these microscopic particles in biological systems primarily relate to their potential to produce reactive oxygen species and interactive effects with other cytotoxic agents. Of particular interest in this work is the effect on mammalian intestinal cells, due to the regular unintentional ingestion of micro- and nanoplastics in the normal western diet. In this study, Caco-2 cells were cultured and exposed to polystyrene particles in vitro as a simple model of the human digestive endothelium.
Resveratrol, a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound, has been …

Evaluating The Stress System Of The Grieving Brain: Corticotropin-Releasing Factors And Partner Loss In Female Coyotes, Rachel Tong Xin Ning
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Forming social bonds is fundamental in helping us foster connections with others. The loss of a loved one often results in grief, stress, and loneliness, and the stress response system of the body has been implicated in the physiological symptoms associated with grieving. Corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) is the hormone that initiates the stress response in the body and acts at two different receptor subtypes CRF receptor (CRFR)1 and CRFF2. Many studies on CRF and social loss have been conducted in monogamous prairie voles, but studies in longer-lived monogamous mammals could improve understanding of the effects of losing pair bonds. …

Asian American Reproductive Rhetorics: A Rhetorical Analysis Of "The Farm" By Joanne Ramos, Mckinlee Armstrong
Asian American Reproductive Rhetorics: A Rhetorical Analysis Of "The Farm" By Joanne Ramos, Mckinlee Armstrong
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Rhetorical scholars have long analyzed the idea of choice in the context of reproductive rights and have concluded that individual choice does not override the systematic barriers women of color face in accessing reproductive healthcare. Most Asian American rhetorical artifacts that have reached this same conclusion are case studies. I propose that analyzing Asian American fiction, specifically The Farm by Joanne Ramos, is just as necessary because fiction demonstrates the barriers that might exist in the future and how to prevent them from happening. The framework I use to analyze this text is the Asian American rhetorical concept of restiveness, …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Cannabis sativa L. is a crop with growing medical and commercial significance. However, cannabis is not as well studied or understood as many of the most common crops. A novel area of research surrounds how much light the plant can tolerate or use to keep increasing flower yield. In agriculture, light intensity is often measured by how many light particles interact with a given area in a second, referred to as photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). For example, at Utah State University in Logan, Utah, during the peak of summer, the sun's light intensity can reach about 2000 μmol·m-2 …
