Despite growing interest in applying human-centred design methods to create learning analytics (LA) systems, most efforts have concentrated on initial design phases, with limited exploration of how LA tools and practices can coevolve during the actual learning and teaching activities. This paper examines how a human-centred LA dashboard can be further refined and adapted by teachers while actively using it in a real-world scenario (i.e., design-in-use), beyond its intended design (i.e., design-for-use). We use instrumental genesis as a theoretical lens to analyze the temporary and permanent instrumentalization of design features and individual and collective instrumentation of the LA …

A New Conceptual And Analytic Framework For Collective Engagement In Mathematics, Tye G. Campbell, Michael A. Lawson
Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications
This paper proposes a new social construct and conceptual-analytic framework for the study of group engagement in mathematics, which we call collective engagement structures. This new framework is offered to address research and practice-identified needs to better understand how individual student dispositions and preferences might interact with group processes to inform student engagement and learning. We demonstrate the collective engagement structures framework using a case study analysis of three middle school students working in a group on a complex mathematics problem. Our analysis details how three students’ individual engagement structures and positional influence interact to form two collective engagement structures: …

Critical Comparison Of Potential Machine Learning Methods For Lightning Thermal Damage Assessment Of Composite Laminates, Juhyeong Lee, Scott L.J. Millen, Xiaodong Xu
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
The present study assesses the potential of using machine learning (ML) methods to predict the extent of lightning thermal damage in fiber-reinforced composite laminates using three supervised machine learning (SML) algorithms: (1) linear regression (LR), (2) decision tree (DT)-based, and (3) MLP models. These models were based on the 10 most significant factors that influence the severity of lightning damage, including three current waveform parameters, four material configurations, and three orthogonal electrical conductivities of each composite. All models demonstrated good performance with coefficient of determination (R2) values between 0.84 ~ 0.96. The multilayer perceptron (MLP) regression model trained …

Users' mental models influence secure and privacy-preserving behavior in a computing environment. Prior studies on users' mental models of Internet, security tools, and digital privacy show that there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to security and privacy design. However, little study to date has explored the ways to translate users' mental models into interactive security and privacy designs. As we begin to address this gap, we focus on privacy policy in this paper. The typical text-based privacy policy suffers from poor readability and usability. A recent study proposed a Visual Interactive Privacy Policy (VIPP), showing promise to offer …

Treatment for trichotillomania is notably limited, preventing suffering individuals from having access to treatment. To address this need, researchers have developed and tested asynchronous online interventions for adults with trichotillomania. A factor that may impact the efficacy of these programs is the use of phone check-ins (or similar coaching support) to improve treatment adherence in website treatment delivery. In the current study we evaluated the role of check-ins on treatment adherence and efficacy of a website delivering acceptance and commitment therapy-enhanced behavior therapy (A-EBT). A sample of 101 adults with trichotillomania were randomly assigned to an A-EBT web-based intervention with …

Misophonia is characterized by intense emotional reactions to specific repetitive sounds. The clinical characteristics and developmental course of misophonia remain underexplored, particularly in treatment-seeking adults. In this study, we characterized the onset, symptom progression, trigger noises, and psychiatric comorbidities associated with misophonia. Additionally, we investigated the relationships between these clinical attributes and the severity of self- and clinician-rated misophonia symptoms. The sample included 60 adults with misophonia enrolled in a randomized controlled trial. Most participants (79%) reported symptom onset in childhood and early adolescence, with symptoms often worsening over time. All participants reported being bothered by human produced sounds. However, …

The concept of game design is often associated with a computational creative task or a creation with technology. Automatically linking game design to computational activity or technology may have contributed to the scarce research on the interaction between place and game design. The focus on technology may have excluded indigenous games from game design conversation in the game design literature. This article explores design in the context of two classic African board games. We examine the influence of place on the design of these games. Building on game design and place literature, the article shows the situatedness of game design …

Diagnostic Overshadowing: A Delayed Diagnosis Of Autism Spectrum Disorder In A Deaf Child, Quynh-Chi Dang, Michael Hoffman, Rachel St. John
Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention
Diagnostic overshadowing occurs when a patient with a pre-existing diagnosis presents with symptoms that are attributed to the diagnosis, but actually reflect a separate issue. This diagnostic overshadowing can lead to delays in diagnosis, as well as disparities in health care and outcomes. The following case will provide an example in which diagnostic overshadowing contributed to the delay of an autism diagnosis in a child who is deaf. With at least 40 to 50% of children who are deaf or hard of hearing having at least one co-existing medical/developmental condition, and the current prevalence of autism at 1 in 36 …

Understanding Barriers To Timely Enrollment Of Early Intervention Services For Children Who Are Deaf And Hard Of Hearing, Krystal L. Werfel, Eddie Okosi, Brittany Grey, Cora Swindale, Emily Lund
Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention
Although the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing guidelines recommend that children who are deaf and hard of hearing should begin early intervention by six months of age, prior work has revealed a substantial percentage of children who receive a diagnosis of hearing loss by three months of age but do not enroll in early intervention by six months of age (Grey et al., 2022). To further understand barriers to enrollment in early intervention for these families, we completed qualitative semi-structured interviews with 10 caregivers of children who were diagnosed with hearing loss by three months of age but did not …

How Environmental Accidents Influence Consumer ‘Green’ Behavior: An Econometric Analysis, Rick Hardcopf, Suvrat Dhanorkar
How Environmental Accidents Influence Consumer ‘Green’ Behavior: An Econometric Analysis, Rick Hardcopf, Suvrat Dhanorkar
Management Faculty Publications
Environmental accidents (EAs) are firm operational failures that harm human health, the natural environment, and offending firms. We propose they also initiate a subtle form of activism among consumers living near the accident by stimulating increased ‘green’ behavior. Using annual county-level data in California from 2000-2015, we show that following an EA, consumers reduce the trash/garbage they generate and the energy they consume. The impact is long-lasting and stronger when EAs are more severe and when consumers have pro-environmental beliefs, ready access to information, and convenient access to ‘green’ options, such as recycling. Since affected consumers may also refuse to …

Impact Of County-Level Urbanicity On Quality Of Life For People With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities In A Rural State., Alyssa M. Smith, Allison Caudill
Developmental Disabilities Network Journal
People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) face challenges, such as decreased access to physical, environmental, and social health-related services that can negatively impact their overall quality of life (QoL). Additionally, people living in rural communities may experience geographic distancing and other factors, like decreased transportation and available housing, that contribute to increased isolation and decreased health outcomes, overall. It is important to consider the QoL of people with IDD living in these communities given the additional intersectional constraints of rurality and having an intellectual disability or other co-occurring conditions. A secondary data analysis reviewed closed and open-ended survey data …

The growing research on narrative interventions is promising but has gaps regarding cultural/linguistic diversity and outcomes beyond language. We evaluated whether a structured, oral narrative intervention affects narrative language, problem behaviors, and self-concept in a diverse group of children with developmental language disorder. A 10-session intervention was implemented within routine care. Baseline and follow-up data included: (a) Narrative recordings—coded by therapists using the CUBED Narrative Language Measure, (b) Child Behavior Checklist—a parent-reported behavioral assessment, and (c) the Piers-Harris Children’s Self-Concept Scale. Among the sample’s n = 33 children, aged 6-16, 55.6% were bilingual. Post intervention, participants’ narrative language scores improved …

Developmental Disabilities Network Journal
This paper presents findings from a study utilizing Latent Profile Analysis to examine the value-based principles of transition professionals from two distinct disciplines: special education and Centers for Independent Living (CIL). Specifically, this paper aimed to identify profiles emerging from the value orientations of special education and CIL professionals, and to explore how individual factors such as professional role, disability status, education, and years’ experience differ across these profiles. Findings revealed a taxonomy comprising four distinct profiles within the transition professionals sampled. These profiles delineate varying dominant values that encapsulate the convergence of special education and independent living philosophies. Implications …

Inclusion In Disability Evaluation And Surveillance Projects: Reflections And Recommendations For Inclusive Project Teams, Tamara M. Douglas, Nathan J. Rabang, Marlene A. Attla, Tasha Boyer, Vanessa Hiratsuka
Developmental Disabilities Network Journal
Disability rights advocates emphasize “Nothing about us without us,” yet a program evaluation or surveillance team’s composition rarely reflects inclusion of the individuals from the disability populations they focus on. Individuals who have lived experience with disabilities should be present during all steps of program evaluation and surveillance projects in meaningful ways to progress the impact of disabilities work. In this paper, we describe a process used by staff at Alaska’s University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) to hire, train, and work with individuals with intellectual, development disabilities (IDD) as team members. The case example for the inclusion …

It is estimated that 25% of adults in the US are living with one or more disabilities. Persons with disabilities (PWD) have unmet health care needs, experience health disparities compared to those without disabilities. Barriers to quality health care include structural barriers such as access to transportation, physical access to facilities, and lack of accessible medical equipment. Other barriers include the knowledge, skills, beliefs, and attitudes of health care providers to meet the needs of PWD. To examine the barriers to health care experienced by adults with disabilities in Connecticut, the University of Connecticut Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities …

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is the federal law that ensures all students with disabilities have access to a free and appropriate public education. In the last IDEA reauthorization in 2004, only 1% of public comments were from individuals with disabilities—the population that IDEA serves. To ensure that the feedback of individuals with disabilities is reflected in the next IDEA reauthorization, it is important to support them to learn about IDEA and advocate. To this end, for this pilot study, 16 transition-aged youth with disabilities participated in a 6-hour civic-engagement program across four states to learn about IDEA …
