Conjunctive Use/Sustained Groundwater Yield Design, Richard C. Peralta Jun 1985

Conjunctive Use/Sustained Groundwater Yield Design, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Assuring the sustained availability of groundwater from all parts of an aquifer system is analogous to assuring that the potentiometric surface does not change over the long term. Such a steady-state surface is maintained by a specific spatially distributed pattern of groundwater withdrawal. The finite difference form of the linearized Boussinesq equation for steady two-dimensional flow through porous media is used in models that design optimal regional potentiometric surfaces and the conjunctive water use/sustained yield strategies that maintain them. Presented objectives of such models include minimization of unmet water needs. minimization of the regional cost of attempting to satisfy water …

Regional Target Level Modification For Groundwater Quality, Bithin Datta, Richard C. Peralta Jun 1985

Regional Target Level Modification For Groundwater Quality, Bithin Datta, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

A procedure for modifying an optimal regional potentiometric surface designed solely on the basis of quantitative considerations, is described, These modifications are based on quality considerations in a sub-system of the-regional system. The affected changes in the water levels are shown to satisfy optimality criteria under specific conditions. An illustrative example is also provided

Early Development Of The Vertebrate Limb: An Introduction To Morphogenetic Tissue Interactions Using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Robert O. Kelley May 1985

Early Development Of The Vertebrate Limb: An Introduction To Morphogenetic Tissue Interactions Using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Robert O. Kelley

Scanning Electron Microscopy

The developing limbs of most vertebrates serve as a model system for studies of morphogenesis, pattern formation, cell and tissue interactions and cell differentiation. Mesoderm in the flank of the embryo induces overlying ectoderm to form a thickened, stratified or pseudo-stratified epithelium which becomes the highly specialized apical ectodermal ridge. In turn, the apical ridge specifies individual limb parts (first from structures proximal to the body axis, then to more distal components) and is required for those elements to form. If the ridge is removed, subsequent limb development ceases and no further limb parts appear. The series of ectodermal-mesodermal interactions …

The Use Of The Scanning Electron Microscope In Studying The Heat Treatment Of Prehistoric Lithic Artifacts From The North Florida Weeden Island Period Mckeithen Site, G. Michael Johnson May 1985

The Use Of The Scanning Electron Microscope In Studying The Heat Treatment Of Prehistoric Lithic Artifacts From The North Florida Weeden Island Period Mckeithen Site, G. Michael Johnson

Scanning Electron Microscopy

In this paper, I discuss a study in which I attempted to determine whether or not the inhabitants of the McKeithen site, a Weeden Island Period mound and village complex in what is today northern Florida, employed heat treatment as part of their lithic reduction technology, and if so, at what point in the reduction sequence it was conducted. I used a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to photograph raw and heat treated control samples of northern Florida chert, then debitage and tools of chert and silicified coral from the McKeithen site which represented the range of colors and luster present …

An Inflation Forecasting Model For The 1980s, Peter J. Saunders May 1985

An Inflation Forecasting Model For The 1980s, Peter J. Saunders

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The 1970s and early 1980s were characterized by accelerating inflation associated with increasing levels of unemployment. The traditional demandpull and cost-push theories of inflation failed to satisfactorily explain the prevailing situation. Instead, a plausible explanation for this unusual economic occurrence was offered by the rational expectations theory. It could conceivably be argued that under the conditions of increasing uncertainty about future price movements, the economic participants may adopt rational type in favor of the traditional adaptive approach.

Habit Reversal Treatment Of Bulimia Nervosa, Ken Small May 1985

Habit Reversal Treatment Of Bulimia Nervosa, Ken Small

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Although several writers have emphasized the habit-like characteristics of bulimia nervosa, no study has investigated the extent to which bulimia responds to treatment specifically for habit disorders. Habit reversal is a general treatment plan which teaches individuals to regain lost awareness of all aspects of a habit. The habit is then interrupted at the earliest movement in the chain by a physically competing response. Habit reversal (Azrin & Nunn, 1973) has been effective in treating other habits (e.g., stuttering, tics, bruxism). In the present study, habit reversal was adapted for the treatment of bulimia.

In response to newspaper advertisements, ten …

The Welfare Impacts Of Environmental Regulation In An Open Economy, Nicole Glineur May 1985

The Welfare Impacts Of Environmental Regulation In An Open Economy, Nicole Glineur

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The major theoretical and practical economic issues on pollution have apparently been sorted out. However, the bulk of the literature in environmental economics shares a shortcoming: the disregard of the welfare implications and consequences of pollution control.

Traditionally, pollution is viewed as a joint product. In this study, the issue of trade and environmental regulations is cast as a problem of input regulation, and the subsequent welfare implications of input regulation are then derived. The purpose of the present research is to emphasize the welfare consequences of pollution control in the context of international or interregional trade. The Batra and …

Beta-Endorphin And Running Addiction: Use In The Treatment Of Schizophrenia, Mania, Depression, And Anxiety, James Glenn Rogers May 1985

Beta-Endorphin And Running Addiction: Use In The Treatment Of Schizophrenia, Mania, Depression, And Anxiety, James Glenn Rogers

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Neither Glasser's (1976) survey data nor popular magazine articles (which seldom cite references) have provided conclusive evidence regarding the existence of running addiction or established causality between this addiction and Beta-endorphin. An integration and summarization of research on the effects of opiates, Beta-endorphin and running will answer the following question, or indicate where evidence is insufficient and explore avenues that require further research.

  • Question 1: Is distance running addictive and if so, what is the role of Beta-endorphin in this addiction?

Secondly, prior reviews of research of the effects of opiates and Beta-endorphin on psychopathological illnesses will be combined with …

Cavitation Limits And The Effect Of Aeration On Cone Valves, Bart "L" Mumford May 1985

Cavitation Limits And The Effect Of Aeration On Cone Valves, Bart "L" Mumford

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Cavitation in cone valves can cause eventual valve failure. However, little data are available on cavitation limits for solid plug cone valves. Flow conditions were identified for a 6 inch cone valve where incipient, critical, incipient damage, and choking cavitation limits occurred at valve openings between 20 and 70 degrees. A description of how these limits are used to predict cavitation intensity is given. Air was used to reduce the damage levels. Aeration increased the allowable pressure drop for damage free operation 6 to 72 percent for valve openings less than 70 degrees. A chart is given for predicting when …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Dynamics of soil water use by two cool-season Agropyron bunchgrasses during the warm season depletion of soil water reserves were monitored for two years in experimental plots in the field. Agropyron desertorum, an introduced, competitive species from Eurasia, extracted more water from the deeper ( > 50 cm) soil layers than the native, less competitive Agropyron spicatum. Agropyron desertorum both extracts this water earlier and to lower soil water potentials than Agropyron spicatum. From the water extraction dynamics of the grasses in monocultures and in their two-way (50:50) mixtures with a shrub they commonly co-occur with, Artemisia tridentata …

Summary Of The Results Of Analysis Of Obsidian Artifacts From The Maya Lowlands, F. W. Nelson Apr 1985

Summary Of The Results Of Analysis Of Obsidian Artifacts From The Maya Lowlands, F. W. Nelson

Scanning Electron Microscopy

The analytical method of X-ray fluorescence spectrometry has been used to analyze obsidian artifacts from Cerros, Belize and from Yaxchilan, Chiapas, Mexico. The results of these analyses are compared to the results of analysis of obsidian geologic sources using graphical and statistical methods in order to identify the probable source from which the obsidian for the artifacts came. These results are then summarized along with results of analysis by others of obsidian artifacts from several archaeological sites in the Lowland Maya area. Using these data, possible trade routes and how they may have changed through time have been postulated.

Scanning Electron Microscopy

The backscattered electron imaging (BEI) mode of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been applied to study various histo-cytochemical reactions in biological specimens since the early seventies. Due to numerous, recent technical improvements the BEI mode of SEM now belongs to the routine of many SEM laboratories.

For cytochemistry, BEI has been mainly used to: visualize intracellular structures and organelles; recognize the different cell types in heterogeneous populations or tissues; study the correlations between enzymatic activities and cell surface features.

We have evaluated the most relevant results obtained in the study of blood cells and the possible future applications of these …

An Empirical Note On The Effects Of Monetary Changes On The Price Level And Real Output, Basudeb Biswas, Peter J. Saunders Apr 1985

An Empirical Note On The Effects Of Monetary Changes On The Price Level And Real Output, Basudeb Biswas, Peter J. Saunders

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

One of the key controversies in economic theory involves the effects of changes in the money supply on the price level and the economy's output. In this respect, two major opposing views can readily be identified: the monetarist view and the income expenditure view. Monetarists regard money as an independent source of economic disturbance. In their view, the money supply is exogenously determined and changes in it exert no lasting influence on any real economic variables. Keynesians, on the other hand, assert that under the conditions of unemployment, changes in the money supply may lead to permanent changes in real …

A Guide To William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" Or "What You Will", Deborah Morris

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

William Shakespeare's family came from the area surrounding Stratford-upon-Avon. William's father, John Shakespeare, was the son of a respectable farmer at Snitterfield, just a few short miles from Stratford. John arrived in Stratford with a moderate inheritance and set up business as a local merchant and landowner. He is described as being a wool dealer and a glover in Stratford. He purchased two houses; one in Green-hill Street and another in Henley Street.

In 1557, John married Mary Arden, daughter of a wealthy land owner, who brought with her an estate called "Ashbies" and an interest in two Snitterfield tenements. …

Measurement Of Factors Affecting Crop Production, Terrence F. Glover Mar 1985

Measurement Of Factors Affecting Crop Production, Terrence F. Glover

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper is concerned with characterizing the effect that environmental and induced factors have on crop yields. In this sense, a framework is outlined which can be used to estimate the characteristics of the probability distribution function (pdf) of crop yields which may not be normal or log-normal as usually is assumed. The paper is methodological in nature, but several pieces of empirical work are being done under the sponsorship of the Utah Experiment Station, particularly modeling alfalfa yield response to changes in pest control and environmental factors which influence alfalfa yields. The methodological framework developed here is in the …
