Applying Machine Learning To Equatorial Plasma Bubble Now Casting On Cubesats, Benjamin Lewis, Shawn Jones, Charles Swenson, Kevin Moon, Mario Harper

Small Satellite Conference

Equatorial plasma bubbles are a space weather phenomenon that occur at low latitudes within the Earth’s ionosphere. These bubbles are regions of low-density plasma that form at the base of the ionosphere and expand upward through the peak and into the topside. They form in the early evening and persist through the nighttime, stretching north and south along magnetic field lines and effecting a sector of longitudes a few degrees wide. These bubbles cause scintillations on radio signals that pass through them, disrupting the performance of systems, such as GPS, throughout the night in regions around the Earth. Due to …

Canada’s northern Inuit and Indigenous communities are experiencing climate change four times faster than the rest of the planet, impacting their traditional means of travel, hunting, and fishing. As temperatures rise, the sea ice forms later and melts earlier, allowing less time to perform these activities safely. While current satellite radiometry data can provide insight into the safety of the ice, Inuit communities require more timely and open access to this data. ArcticSat is a 3U CubeSat being co-developed with the Hamlet of Chesterfield Inlet, Nunavut, Canada, made to accomplish these goals. Community co-development ensures that community members lead the …

Earth observation (EO) is currently a major application area of satellite operations. As more powerful imagers become more accessible and see increased use, these EO images will increase in size, which also increases the computational complexity of classifying them. Using neural networks for this task has limitations due to the small memory and compute capability possessed by embedded platforms. Instead, this research investigates a shift in machine-learning paradigms from neural networks to hyperdimensional computing (HDC). HDC uses very large vectors to represent and draw relations from data. HDC often has a lower latency, power usage, and memory footprint than neural …

Modelling Climate Effects On Site Productivity And Developing Site Index Conversion Equations For Jack Pine And Trembling Aspen Mixed Stands, Mahadev Sharma

Aspen Bibliography

Forest site productivity estimates are crucial for making informed forest resource management decisions. These estimates are valuable both for the tree species currently growing in the stands and for those being considered for future stands. Current models are generally designed for pure stands and do not account for the influence of climate on tree growth. Consequently, site index (SI) conversion equations were developed specifically for jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) trees grown in naturally originated mixed stands. This work involved sampling 186 trees (93 of each species) from 31 even-aged mixed stands (3 …

We describe an astronomical 6U CubeSat mission VERTECS (Visible Extragalactic background RadiaTion Exploration by CubeSat). The scientific purpose of VERTECS is to reveal star-formation history of the universe by observation of the extragalactic background light (EBL) in visible wavelengths. Earlier observations by sounding rockets and infrared astronomical satellites have shown that the near-infrared EBL is several times brighter than the integrated light of known galaxies. As candidates for the excess light, first-generation stars in the early universe or low-redshift intra-halo light have been proposed, but it has not been concluded. Since these objects are expected to show different emission spectra …

Design, Characterization, And Testing Of Hert, A Miniaturized High-Energy-Resolution Relativistic Electron Telescope For Cubesats, Hong Zhao, Will Teague, Lauren Blum, Xinlin Li, Jared Cantilina, Will Edgar, Tyler Bishop, Patricio Ramos, Skyler Krantz Aug 2024

Design, Characterization, And Testing Of Hert, A Miniaturized High-Energy-Resolution Relativistic Electron Telescope For Cubesats, Hong Zhao, Will Teague, Lauren Blum, Xinlin Li, Jared Cantilina, Will Edgar, Tyler Bishop, Patricio Ramos, Skyler Krantz

Small Satellite Conference

Earth's outer radiation belt is filled with relativistic electrons in the MeV energy range and above. These highly energetic electrons pose significant threats to avionics and humans in space, and understanding their dynamics has been an urgent need. As CubeSats increasingly play a more prominent role by executing missions at a far lower cost, they become ideal vehicles for conducting such scientific investigations. The miniaturized High-Energy-Resolution relativistic electron Telescope (HERT) is a compact telescope designed for a 6U CubeSat mission in a geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO). HERT aims to provide high-energy-resolution (dE/E < 12%) measurements of 1 - 7 MeV electrons at GTO. These measurements will enable a novel method to differentiate the two main acceleration mechanisms, inward radial transport and local acceleration, and solve the longstanding question of how electrons in the Earth's radiation belts are accelerated to relativistic energies. Building upon the heritage of the Relativistic Electron Proton Telescope (REPT) instrument on the Van Allen Probes and the REPTile-2 instrument on CIRBE, HERT iS comprised of a stack of nine solid-state silicon detectors in a telescope configuration with a beryllium window to block lower energy electrons and a tantalum collimator to enforce the required FOV (33°). The instrument responses were investigated using Geant4 simulations, and the results project HERT to have a nominal energy resolution of ~5% for 1.5 - 3 Me V electrons and < ~12% for other core energy channels. Radiation testing has been conducted with a Cobalt-60 source, and the results suggest that HERT electronics can sustain a total ionizing dose of ~65 krad, meeting the instrument performance requirement in a GTO. Random vibration simulations have also been conducted, which suggest that HERT's reaction stresses and displacements are within a significant safety factor relative to yield strength from each component. Bench testing with muons and an SR-90/Y-90 radioactive source is ongoing to test HERT's performance. With a high energy resolution and a miniaturized design, HERT will greatly advance the quantitative understanding of relativistic electron acceleration in the outer radiation belt.

In recent years, CubeSat projects have initiated plans to conduct astronomical observations by deploying mission payloads. CubeSats present a promising solution for swiftly addressing critical challenges in astrophysics with flexibility. Within Cubeats, where both the bus system and mission payload occupy about half of the volume, there is a necessity to miniaturize mission equipment. The critical factor in astronomical observations, light-gathering ability, is determined not only by the aperture size but, more importantly for diffuse emission, by the optical throughput, i.e., the product of the aperture area and the observing solid angle. Consequently, even with a compact optical system, specializing …

Coronagraphs are the only instruments that can capture the development of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) throughout the near-Sun space. Thus, they provide critical information for the physics of CME evolution and propagation and consequently for space weather forecasting. It makes strategic sense to lower the technological and logistical barriers for maintaining space-based coronagraphic observations. MiniCOR is an ambitious coronagraph design to address these challenges. The technical goal of MiniCOR is to demonstrate that a low-cost miniaturized 3U coronagraph, can return data with higher cadence and equal or better sensitivity than currently operating full-size coronagraphs. MiniCOR is a funded project under …
