Vegclassify: A Hybrid Deep Learning–Ndvi Greenspace Classification Tool And Gui, Huaqing Wang, Yawen Zhang, Jiaojiao Fu

Browse all Datasets

VegClassify is a hybrid, high-resolution greenspace classification tool integrating a fine-tuned deep learning model with automated NDVI threshold optimization. The tool improves accuracy and reduces subjectivity in vegetation classification using NAIP imagery. This graphical user interface (GUI) was developed to extend and simplify the use of the previously established greenspace image classification tool. The GUI provides an accessible, user‑friendly environment for running the VegClassify workflow without requiring users to interact directly with Python scripts or command‑line tools. It supports loading NAIP or other high‑resolution imagery, running deep‑learning–assisted NDVI threshold optimization, visualizing classification outputs, and exporting vegetation masks.

The underlying Python …

Comparison Of The Impact Of Probabilistic Versus Deterministic Ground Motions On Structural Responses Of A Steel Moment Building In Salt Lake City, Utah, O. Murphy, M. Zaker Esteghamati, B. R. Cox Mar 2026

Comparison Of The Impact Of Probabilistic Versus Deterministic Ground Motions On Structural Responses Of A Steel Moment Building In Salt Lake City, Utah, O. Murphy, M. Zaker Esteghamati, B. R. Cox

Civil and Environmental Engineering Student Research

Earthquakes on the Wasatch Fault pose a significant hazard to Utah’s people and built environment. Code-based seismic design of civil infrastructure in Utah is governed by ground motions determined from regional probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA). However, with a large earthquake overdue along several segments of the Wasatch Fault, there is growing concern among Utah engineers that PSHA-based ground motions are significantly lower than those from a deterministic scenario. This study compares the structural responses of a four-story steel moment frame in Salt Lake City, Utah, under two ground-motion sets derived from risk-targeted probabilistic and deterministic seismic-hazard analyses. The preliminary …

Precise estimation of evapotranspiration (ET) is essential for sustainable water management in arid agroecosystems, particularly for high-water-demand crops such as rice. This study integrated very-high-resolution UAV thermal–multispectral imagery with a Two-Source Energy Balance model (UAV–TSEB) and a field-calibrated AquaCrop model to quantify daily ET and its components under continuous flooding on the arid Peruvian coast during the 2024–2025 season. A network of 24 drainage lysimeters provided an independent observational benchmark (ETlys); to represent the treatment-level response, lysimeter observations were aggregated as the mean across the 24 units for each UAV campaign. Thirteen UAV surveys supplied radiometric surface temperature …

Predicting Tart Cherry Stem Water Potential Using Uav Multispectral Imagery And Environmental Data Via Symbolic Regression, Anderson L. S. Safre, Alfonso Torres-Rua, Kurt Wedegaertner, Brent Black, Brennan Bean, Burdette Barker, Matt Yost

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Tart cherry is an important fruit crop in Utah, where irrigation is essential due to arid conditions. Precision irrigation requires reliable indicators of plant water status, and stem water potential (Ψstem), is among the most sensitive though labor-intensive and spatially limited. This study develops Ψstem estimation models using high-resolution multispectral Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) imagery combined with meteorological and soil moisture data, applying Symbolic Regression (SR). Results show a stronger correlation between optical bands and Ψstem during the pre-harvest period. Among 85 vegetation indices, the Red Chromatic Coordinate (RCC) index performed best (R2 = 0.67). …

Demonstration Of Coherent Optical Phase-Shift Keying With A Watt-Class 1550 Nm Tapered Diode Laser Amplifier For Free-Space Optical Communication Applications, Charlotte K. Duda, Aaron Cross, Chadwick Lindstrom, Julie Smith

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

High-power semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are a promising alternative to erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), which typically amplify the weak signals used in free-space optical (FSO) communications. In this work, we demonstrate that an Aura TM SOA operating with 1 W output power can be used to transmit phase-shift key (PSK) protocols required of next-generation FSO communication networks. Firstly, we demonstrate successful transmission of binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) for bit rates up to 50 Gbps. Secondly, we demonstrate successful transmission of quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) for bit rates up to 100 Gbps. For both PSK protocols, we demonstrate comparable constellation error-vector …

Evaluating The Response Of Ageing Rc Bridge Piers To The 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquake Using Bouc-Wen Hysteretic Models, Negin Fayaz, S. Kocakaplan Sezgin, E. Ahmadi, M. M. Kashani, M. Zaker Esteghamati

Civil and Environmental Engineering Student Research

This study examines the seismic response of reinforced concrete (RC) bridge piers subjected to ground motion (GM) records from the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake by comparing the impact of pulse-like versus no-pulse records. A suite of 300 nonlinear Bouc-Wen hysteretic models was developed to represent piers with varying nonlinear behavior. Each Bouc-Wen model was assessed under 24 pulse-like and 28 no-pulse GMs, resulting in 15,600 nonlinear time-history simulations. Subsequently, the relationship between Bouc-Wen parameters (i.e., period and yield displacement) and seismic responses (i.e., maximum displacement, residual displacement, and maximum acceleration) was analyzed. The results show that pulse-like records produce 5 times …

When The Student Surpasses The Teacher: Better Generalization In Ai-Based Seismic Waveform Quality Assessment Using Knowledge Distillation, Ali Namin, F. Jalaeifar, A. Kottke, M. Zaker Esteghamati Mar 2026

When The Student Surpasses The Teacher: Better Generalization In Ai-Based Seismic Waveform Quality Assessment Using Knowledge Distillation, Ali Namin, F. Jalaeifar, A. Kottke, M. Zaker Esteghamati

Civil and Environmental Engineering Student Research

This paper presents a knowledge distillation (KD)-based approach to reduce computational expenses and improve the generalizability of deep learning-based models for quality assessment of seismic waveforms. Using two different waveform datasets, teacher models are distilled into lightweight student models from two families of time-series-based and image-based models. Models from both student families are trained on a development dataset and evaluated on the testing portion of the development dataset, as well as on an entirely different external testing dataset. Results indicate that KD can provide student models with substantially reduced size (5%-10% of the teacher model's size) and latency while preserving, …

A Context-Aware Computer Vision-Based Approach For Post-Earthquake Damage Assessment Of Bridge Inventories, Parham Bakhtiari, S. Ratna Pandey, M. Zaker Esteghamati Mar 2026

A Context-Aware Computer Vision-Based Approach For Post-Earthquake Damage Assessment Of Bridge Inventories, Parham Bakhtiari, S. Ratna Pandey, M. Zaker Esteghamati

Civil and Environmental Engineering Student Research

Post-earthquake damage assessment is crucial to evaluate the safety and serviceability of bridges after an earthquake. Conventional screening methods rely on manual inspection, which is costly, time-consuming, and poses safety risks to inspectors. To address these challenges, this study presents a context-aware vision transformer framework for integrating structural element details into multi-defect identification through a late-fusion approach. The model is trained on a post-earthquake image dataset collected from three major earthquakes in Italy, consisting of 356 images. Five structural elements of reinforced concrete bridges are selected, where concrete spalling and reinforcement corrosion were chosen as target defects. The framework achieved …

In addition, insufficient funding for improvements and low public engagement were identified as key challenges in addressing water quality issues. Results revealed current unmet needs with regional variation to inform Extension resource allocation and programming.

On Signifiable Computability: Part Iii: A Note On Unnameable Functions On Natural Numbers, Vladimir A. Kulyukin Mar 2026

On Signifiable Computability: Part Iii: A Note On Unnameable Functions On Natural Numbers, Vladimir A. Kulyukin

Computer Science Faculty and Staff Publications

A writing system 𝔚 on an alphabet 𝒜 is a tuple (ℜ,𝔐), where ℜ is a finite set of text formation rules and 𝔐 is a finite rule application mechanism that generates texts on 𝒜. A natural writing system forms natural language texts on an alphabet such as Sanskrit on Devanagari. An artificial writing system generates formal language texts on an alphabet such as Lisp on Unicode. Let ℕ ={0,1,2,…} be the set of natural numbers. A function on natural numbers 𝑓 :ℕ𝑘 ↦ ℕ, 0 < 𝑘 ∈ ℕ, is nameable by a writing system on an alphabet if, and only if, the system can generate a text on the alphabet that names f and no other function. We show that there exist functions on natural numbers unnameable in principle in that they cannot be named by any writing system on any alphabet. Our results imply the following computability-theoretic hierarchy of functions on natural numbers: computable ⊊ partially computable ⊊ nameable ⊊ 𝔉, where 𝔉 is the set of functions on ℕ.
