The sugar-beet nematode has now become of importance in Utah. It occurs in spots in practically all of the older beet-growing districts and in a few parts of the state in much larger areas. The intensity of infestation varies from mere traces to nearly complete occupation. One of the areas of severe infestation in Utah on a large area is in the Lewiston district, of northern Cache Valley. The survey here reported was undertaken in order to find the extent of nematode infestation in Cache Valley and the possibility of its control by ordinary cultural practices.

Correlation Studies In Wheat, Joseph Reed

Considerable work has been done by plant breeders and investigators in the study of individual plant characters, but only a few have attempted to work out correlations between characters in crop plants. One reason for this seems to be, that many investigators have felt that correlation studies were of very little practical value. This attitude was due perhaps to the interpretation given correlation data, especially the nature of the casual agency or agencies to which the correlation was attributed. It is managed by the Poultry Department with an experienced poultry raiser in direct charge of the feeding and care ,of the hens in the contest. The buildings, grounds, and fences were built and furnished by the Experiment Station.

Cache County Water Conservation District No. 1 lies on the west side of the valley about eight miles from and a little northwest of Logan, Cache County, Utah. Figure 1 shows the location of the project with respect to Salt Lake, Ogden, Brigham City, Logan, and Cache County. Cache County, with a population in 1920 of 27,000 people, is located in the north-central part of the state and occupies the greater part of the fertile Cache Valley. The data presented in this thesis are the results obtained from a study of the F₂ and F₃ generations from a cross between the wheat varieties, Dicklow and Hard Federation. Toward the end of the summer of 1922 this problem was assigned to me by Professor George Stewart. The plants then growing in the field were in the F₂ generation, the cross having been made in 1920 by Professor Stewart. Two methods of crop improvement are open to the plant breeder. Pure-line selection, which might be mentioned first, deals with the natural variability in plant populations. Thru selection, isolation, and comparative yield tests superior individuals are located. Nothing, however, can be added which the plant does not already have. Here hybridization provides a new starting point. Increased variation, new combination of characters, and thus greater opportunities are provided for improvement. The present investigation has for its purpose a study of the latter phase of this subject.

In Utah are somewhat more than fifty-two and a half million acres of land. Of this about five million acres are in farms, but only 1,371,000 acres, or 2.6 per cent, are irrigated. In addition there are about 344,000 acres under dry-farm culture, making a total of 1,715,000 acres of improved land. This leaves all of Utah's fifty-two and a half million acres, except about 3.5 per cent, to be utilized by some means other than crop-growing.
