An Evaluation Of The College Football Show Band With Particular Reference To The Institutions Of Higher Learning In The Rocky Mountain Area, Grant F. Andersen
An Evaluation Of The College Football Show Band With Particular Reference To The Institutions Of Higher Learning In The Rocky Mountain Area, Grant F. Andersen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This research study and evaluation is based on educational philosophy that acknowledges the values of music education in the institutions of higher learning in the United States, also the place of instrumental music as a part of the music education program. There is, however, a feeling of controversy over the values and place of the football show band within the instrumental music program.
In the Rocky Mountain area, every college and university has a football show band. To many administrators and music educators, including band directors, it may seem that the importance of the show band has been exaggerated, and …
The Effect Of Limited Moisture Supply At Various Stages Of Growth On The Development And Production Of Hybrid Corn, Ralph E. Campbell
The Effect Of Limited Moisture Supply At Various Stages Of Growth On The Development And Production Of Hybrid Corn, Ralph E. Campbell
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Corn occupies from 25 to 30 percent of the crop land harvested in the United States. In recent years the acreage devoted to corn in this country has been decidedly greater than that devoted to any other cultivated crop. In 1944 its dollar value exceeded the combined values of wheat, barley, rye, grain sorghums, and cotton.
Although South Dakota lies on the northwestern fringe of the corn belt, the corn crop is one of the most important in that state. Corn production in that area is somewhat unstable because of drought. Corn often fails to reach full maturity before the …
Inheritance Studies Of A Wheat Cross To Six Races Of Covered Smut, Douglas R. Dewey
Inheritance Studies Of A Wheat Cross To Six Races Of Covered Smut, Douglas R. Dewey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Covered smut is a fungus disease that has caused serious losses of wheat for centuries. Its origin is not known, but it was well known to early Romans as evidenced by the fact that they had a god, Robigus, whose special work was to watch over crops to "avert the mildew" (45). It is often referred to as "bunt" or "stinking smut of wheat". Throughout this paper the term "bunt" will be used to designate this disease in order to avoid confusing it with other smuts of wheat.
Bunt is worldwide in its distribution, but it is especially prevalent in …

Student Management Practices In The Secondary School Shops Of Utah, U. Sterling Cheney
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Background
It is wrong to think that industrial education had its beginning recently. Merely because industry has made revolutionary changes and advancements during recent years does not mean that industrial education has not been in existence for a long time. Industrial education in some forms is probably as old as the human race.
In the development of industrial education it is interesting to note that both anciently and during modern times the emphasis has been placed on the value of handwork. The cave man's life depended upon his skill and ability to make and use the various types of primitive …
The Place Of The General Shop In The Industrial Arts Curriculum In The Secondary Schools Of Utah, Max E. Mckinnon
The Place Of The General Shop In The Industrial Arts Curriculum In The Secondary Schools Of Utah, Max E. Mckinnon
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The primary purpose of education is to develop happy and successful citizens. Industrial arts, being a phase of general education, should in every way possible contribute toward achieving this primary purpose. Because of the rapidly changing methods of industrial production and the increasing areas of industry, it is therefore necessary, that to keep abreast of this industrial advancement, industrial education must employ every possible means to justifiably incorporate these new industrial methods and products into the industrial education program.
It is the intention of the writer that this study will bring forth evidence of the practical usability of the general …
A Study Of Elementary Physical Education At The Whittier School, Logan, Utah, Phyllis C. Jacobson
A Study Of Elementary Physical Education At The Whittier School, Logan, Utah, Phyllis C. Jacobson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Since the First World War, there has been an increased recognition for the need of physical education in the elementary school. Although educators recognize and agree on the need, they are not in agreement as to how to best achieve this need. Some educators believe that physical education should be taught as a specialized subject. Through this means, instruction is provided by a specialist who is trained in physical education. Some educators believe that physical education should be integrated with every other phase of the school program and taught by the classroom teacher. There are other educators who believe that …
Determining The Extent, In Terms Of Behavior Growth To Which Industrial Arts Teachers In Utah Are Achieving The Objectives Of Industrial Arts, A. Kent Randall
Determining The Extent, In Terms Of Behavior Growth To Which Industrial Arts Teachers In Utah Are Achieving The Objectives Of Industrial Arts, A. Kent Randall
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It is evident that, if industrial arts teachers have subscribed to a set of objectives to guide or give direction to their teaching program, they should be used. It is not sufficient to formulate the aims then lay them aside to collect dust. Rather these aims or objectives should be used effectively as a learning guide. Upon these objectives the teacher should build his whole program.
It has been said that objectives really mean behavioral growth on the part of the students. If such is the case, the objectives must be translated into a desired behavior pattern outcome. The student's …
A Study Of Administrative Policies And Procedures For Girls' Physical Education In Selected Secondary Schools Of Southern Utah, Ann L. Lamb
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Each person in education from the Commissioner of Education down to the classroom teacher is concerned with administration. Each has administrative duties. The way these duties are conducted and carried out will have a direct influence on the outcome of any physical education program and each child within this program.
Through the Tenth Amendment responsibility for the administration of education has been turned over to the various states. Most of the states through their constitutions place the responsibility upon the legislature to provide for organization and maintenance of public school systems. This body then draws up the statutory laws and …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly referred to as the Mormon Church, is one of the few religious organizations in the world today that constructs temples, since its founding in the year 1830 these sacred edifices have exerted a definite influence upon its members, and have played an important part in the religious activities of the church and fulfilled a definite role in its gospel teachings. A number of these temples have been constructed under varying circumstances in different parts of the country where the need has arisen. These buildings were more than houses of worship, for …

Weed Control Investigations On Some Important Aquatic Plants Which Impede Flow Of Western Irrigation Water, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation
Weed Control Investigations On Some Important Aquatic Plants Which Impede Flow Of Western Irrigation Water, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation
Elusive Documents
During the past 50 years, the acreage of land placed under irrigation in the western United States has increased greatly to meet the growing demand for food and fiber production. To provide this water for crop production it is necessary not only for river waters to be impounded and irrigation canal distribution systems established but also for the irrigation waterways to be free of obstructing plant growths which impede the flow of water. This requires various types of weed control measures in order that originally designed carrying capacities of the waterways may be maintained. Methods involving new techniques developed mostly …

The Effect Of Partial Sterilization Of Soil With Ethylene Dibromide Upon The Microbial Activities Of The Soil, Robert E. Lee
The Effect Of Partial Sterilization Of Soil With Ethylene Dibromide Upon The Microbial Activities Of The Soil, Robert E. Lee
Biology
The use of ethylene dibromide to control nematodes and wireworms in Utah soils where sugar beets and potatoes are grown has become an accepted practice. Where this soil fumigant has been used a greater plant growth and an increase in crops has been noted. This increased yield of crops has occurred following its use in the Lewiston area of Cache Valley. We have reason to believe that this increase is due to stimulation of beneficial soil microorganisms, as has been shown when older soil fumigants such as carbon disulphide and toluene have been used.
An Analysis Of School Drop-Outs At Tooele High School, Franklin Whitehouse
An Analysis Of School Drop-Outs At Tooele High School, Franklin Whitehouse
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study of approximately 50 early school drop-outs is an effort to find out why so many boys and girls leave school before they complete their high school course. We need to know the basic reasons that prompt their decisions, not the superficial excuses that appear on many school records. The study was undertaken in the belief that when the causes are understood, they can be remedied through measures to provide adequate programs of student aid. If it is because of lack of interest in school, this, too, can be remedied through changes in school programs to make them mean …

Studies In The Life History And Ecology Of The American Pintail (Anas Acuta Tzitzihoa Vieliot) In Utah, Robert W. Fuller
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Wildlife management has been defined as lithe manipulation of wild populations of vertebrate animals in their relation to man and his interests" Wildlife management, then, could not exist in the absence ot either wildlife or humans. Converting this idea to the waterfowl situation, we can say that there are no waterfowl problems other than as they exist in the minds of men. (Wil1s, 1951) These words by the Chief of the IllinoIs Natural History Survey precede a plea for fundamental facts and a basic understanding of waterfowl upon which sound management can in turn be based. l"or only through sound …
The Cinnamon Teal (Anas Cyanoptera Vieillot): Its Life History, Ecology, And Management, Howard E. Spencer Jr.
The Cinnamon Teal (Anas Cyanoptera Vieillot): Its Life History, Ecology, And Management, Howard E. Spencer Jr.
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It takes but a perusal of literature pertaining to waterfowl to realize the paucity of information regarding the Cinnamon Teal. The Redhead, Blue-winged Teal, and Canvasback have all been exhaustively studied by Low (1941). Bennett (1938), and Hochbaum (1944), respectively; and other species are now receiving attention from other workers. In order to help round out these studies of particular species, the writer undertook the project of a detailed study of the life history, ecology, and management of the Cinnamon Teal.

The importance and growth of campus recreation is being felt by leaders throughout the country. Daniels (2, p. 38) summarizes the importance of the total organism in modern education as follows: "Ample justification for a consideration of, the problem of recreation may be found in the latest and most authoritative literature in the field of educat1on, as well as in a direct study of conditions found on many college campuses throughout the country. Rooted firmly in the philosophy of modern educatlon is the thought that the total organism must be given the opportunity for experiences of an all-round nature, with …

Personnel Practices Governing The Selection And Appointment Of Elementary Teachers In Utah, Jack Russell Tittensor
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In America the men of influence who have provided leadership to our country have always been concerned with the schooling of the nation's children because they have recognized education of the people to be a vital means of preserving and improving our democratic way of life. Our country's educators, in meeting their great responsibility, in turn have long been concerned with the improvement of educational methods and with the quality of teaching that is provided to these children.
A specific problem that has come to be recognized as one of great importance to the school systems and to the communities …

An Evaluation Of The Willard School As A Community-Centered School, Vaughn Wassom
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Every community must be provided with an educational program attuned to community life. It must provide for increased efficiency in production and widom in consumption. It must train in the ideals, the skills, and the habits essential to the highest level of home and community life. To this end there must be well trained, resourceful teachers who work under conditions that elicit their best efforts. There must be a curriculum that embraces community experiences and physical facilities that promote economy and efficiency of effort (12).

In 1888, Representative Anthon H. Lund of Sanpete County introduced the bill to create a college in Utah. The idea of education for the people of rural Utah came to him while he was on a mission to Denmark. July 29, 1889 upon the sagebrush and wild grass-covered bench of Old Lake Bonneville, high enough above the valley to provide a marvelous view, the founders laid the cornerstone of a building to be used for the education of western democracy - a rural college for the masses.

Bulletin No. 358 - The Rainbow Trout In Relation To The Other Fish In Fish Lake, William F. Sigler
Bulletin No. 358 - The Rainbow Trout In Relation To The Other Fish In Fish Lake, William F. Sigler
UAES Bulletins
The coast rainbow Salmo gairdnerii irideus Gibbons is not indigenous to Utah. Its original range is Pacific North America from Alaska to Mexico. The coast rainbow was first introduced into Utah in 1883 from McCloud River, California.
The rainbow is used more extensively for artificial propagation than any other trout in North America, both for sport fishing and as a commercial food fish. Its natural habitat is big lakes and rivers; it can adapt itself to relatively small ponds, but it does not reproduce in these ponds.
Limnological and fishery investigations on Fish Lake were initiated in 1922 and have …
