Selenium Poisoning Of Wildlife And Western Agriculture: Cause And Effect, N. E. Korte Feb 2000

Selenium Poisoning Of Wildlife And Western Agriculture: Cause And Effect, N. E. Korte

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

This project examined the hypothesis that selenium contamination is not the principal cause of the decline of endemic fish species in the Upper Colorado Basin. Activities employed to test this hypothesis included a reconnaissance of locations altered by recent road construction, a reinterpretation of available literature regarding selenium toxicity, and the interpretation of unpublished data obtained from the Upper Colorado Basin Fish Recovery Program. The project demonstrates that most of the evidence implicating selenium is circumstantial. Specifically, this research demonstrates that neither the historical record nor the technical literature consistently supports the emphasis given selenium toxicity. For example, many locations …

Final Environmental Impact Statement - Iron Point Exploraton License - Iron Point Coal Lease Tract - Elk Creek Coal Lease Tract, Volume 2, United States Department Of Agriculture -- Forest Service, United States Department Of The Interior -- Bureau Of Land Management

Environmental Assessments (CO)

This appendix documents BLM and Forest Service activities to involve and consult with other government agencies and the public in the preparation of the Final EIS for the potential leasing of the Iron Point and Elk Creek Coal lease tracts, as well as the issuance of a coal exploration license for an area within and surrounding the Iron Point Coal lease Tract.

Final Envrionmental Impact Statement: Iron Point Exploration License -- Iron Point Coal Lease Tract -- Elk Creek Coal Lease Tract, Volume 1, United States Department Of Agriculture -- Forest Service, United States Departement Of The Interior -- Bureau Of Land Management

Environmental Assessments (CO)

The Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) describes the physical, biological, social, and economic resources that would be potentially affected by leasing of the Iron Point and Elk Creek Coal Lease tracts as well as issuing an exploration license for an area within and surrounding the Iron Point Coal Lease Tract. The federal decisions to be made involve the approval or disapproval of coal leasing (the Iron Point and Elk Creek tracts) and of an exploration license. Some of the key issues for these proposed actions include: the potential effects of transporting over 19 million tons of coal per year from …

Development And Evaluation Of Predictive Models For Measuring The Biological Integrity Of Streams, Charles P. Hawkins, R. H. Norris, J. N. Hogue, J. W. Feminella Jan 2000

Development And Evaluation Of Predictive Models For Measuring The Biological Integrity Of Streams, Charles P. Hawkins, R. H. Norris, J. N. Hogue, J. W. Feminella

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

The ratio of the number of observed taxa to that expected to occur in the absence of human-caused stress (OIE) is an intuitive and ecologically meaningful measure of biological integrity. We examined how OIE ratios derived from stream invertebrate data varied among 234 unimpaired reference sites and 254 test sites potentially impaired by past logging. Data were collected from streams in three montane ecoregions in California. Two sets of River Invertebrate Prediction and Classification System (RIVPACS) predictive models were built: one set of models was based on near-species taxonomic resolution; the other was based on family identifications. Two models were …

Territorial Use Rights: A Rights Based Approach To Spatial Management, Keith R. Criddle, Mark Herrmann, Joshua A. Greenberg Jan 2000

Territorial Use Rights: A Rights Based Approach To Spatial Management, Keith R. Criddle, Mark Herrmann, Joshua A. Greenberg

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The advantages of increasingly fine scale management of fisheries may be offset by increased enforcement and management costs, reduced catch-per-unit-effort and increased running costs for harvesters, and by an intensification of the race for fish. An alternative to regulated open access would be to lease or permanently transfer, spatially defined harvest privileges. Exclusive spatial use privileges have been used to control grazing on public rangelands, and the exploitation of forest, petroleum, and mineral resources on state and federal lands and on the submerged lands of the outer continental shelf. Individual and community based spatial use privileges have been used to …

An Analysis Of Persistence, Resilience, And The Conservation Of Keystone Species, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal Jan 2000

An Analysis Of Persistence, Resilience, And The Conservation Of Keystone Species, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Ecologists and economists are increasingly in agreement that ecological and economic systems are linked and that these systems should be viewed as one system. However, because this recognition has been recent, there are very few formal studies of jointly determined ecologicaleconomic systems (ecosystems). Consequently, this paper has two objectives. First, the ecological concepts of persistence and resilience are characterized in the context of a stylized ecosystem. Next, these concepts are used to study a conservation problem with two noteworthy features. In this problem, the obj ects of interest are keystone species, and society is assumed to derive benefits from the …
