It is well known that the anterior pituitary gland exerts through its gonadotrophic hormones a definite stimulationg effect on the gonads and that the gonads in turn have a reciprocal endocrine effect on the anterior pituitary. This importance of the anterior pituitary to gonadal function was first demonstrated by P. E. Smith (34). Other prominent early workers who further elucidated the reciprocal endocrine relationship were Moore and Price (25). Following a great deal of study and experimental work by many groups, A. E. Previous literature indicates the opercular bone as a useful tool for the determination of age and growth of fish. The reliability and validity of this method is tested for two populations of Utah chub. Age and growth are calculated for 222 Utah chub collected from Panguitch Lake and 212 Utah chub collected from Navajo Lake, southern Utah, in 1952-1953 from both scales and opercular bones. Scales are measured with the aid of a projector. Opercular bones are measured directly. The center of growth of the opercular bone is posterior to the posterior lip of the fulcrum. The most important prerequisite of linings for controlling seepage losses from irrigation canals is their watertightness. In addition to being watertight, a lining must be relatively durable if it is to be economical. Rigid materials provide satisfactory linings for canals with well-drained and stable subgrades. Under other conditions, where expansive soils are encountered and ground water is a problem, a rigid lining such as concrete is not durable. A severe outbreak in the Sierra Blanca Mountains of New Mexico several years prior to 1907 was reported by Hopkins (1909). Hopkins in 1909 also found evidence of an epidemic that occurred about 50 years prior to that date on the Pike National Forest, and one 20 years prior to 1909 on the White River National Forest, both in Colorado. The bullfrong Rana catesbeiana Shaw, the largest of the American frogs, is not natural to Utah, but has been introduced into several areas within the last 3 decades. Most people of Utah have never heard of bullfrogs, and fewer have seen them. The bullfrog is so different from the little leopard frog Rana Pipiens, that people who know the latter, cannot comprehend a frog having such a giant size.

The Effect Of Partial Sterilization Of Soil With Ethylene Dibromide Upon The Microbial Activities Of The Soil, Robert E. Lee

The use of ethylene dibromide to control nematodes and wireworms in Utah soils where sugar beets and potatoes are grown has become an accepted practice. Where this soil fumigant has been used a greater plant growth and an increase in crops has been noted. This increased yield of crops has occurred following its use in the Lewiston area of Cache Valley. We have reason to believe that this increase is due to stimulation of beneficial soil microorganisms, as has been shown when older soil fumigants such as carbon disulphide and toluene have been used.
