The Development Of A Practical Method For The Histological Preparation Of Adult Mammalian Bone, John F. Noble May 1956

The Development Of A Practical Method For The Histological Preparation Of Adult Mammalian Bone, John F. Noble

Biology

Histological demonstration of bone has long presented a special and most difficult problem in histopathological laboratories. Many and varied techniques are described in the literature, but most of them concern only special phases of the total process. Also, many techniques which are applicable to the processing of small and yound animal bones are not suitable to routine processing of larger or adult mammalian bones.

The Physiological Effects Of Feeding Systox Residues To Cows And Calves, Le Grande C. Ellis May 1956

The Physiological Effects Of Feeding Systox Residues To Cows And Calves, Le Grande C. Ellis

Biology

Since World War II there has been an increase in the number of new insecticides on the market. One group, the organic phosphate insecticides which were developed during the war by Schrader (2, 20), is effective in controlling plant-feeding insects (19). Soon after these new insecticides were introduced, reports indicated that residues remained on forage crops after harvest which could be directly harmful to animals consuming them, or indirectly to man. It has been shown by Biddulph et al. (5) and Sheppard et al. (31) that DDT residues appear in the milk of cows eating DDT treated alfalfa. …

Fluctuations In Size And Concentration Of Tritrichomonas Foetus In Preputial Samples, George A. Jeffs May 1956

Fluctuations In Size And Concentration Of Tritrichomonas Foetus In Preputial Samples, George A. Jeffs

Biology

It has been established that Tritrichomonas foetus is an important organism in causing abortion and infertility in cattle. The disease produced by this flagellate results in an annual loss of over one million dollars in the United States alone. The importance of the disease warrants further investigation of this organism. The investigation was undertaken in order to obtain information concerning fluctuations in size of Tritrichomonas foetus, concentration of the organism in preputial samples, and the pH of the preputial fluid in which the parasite occurs; and to observe any possible relationship between these.

A Follow-Up Study Of Utah State Agricultural College Graduates In 1948, 1951, And 1954, Who Obtained Secondary Teaching Certificates, Wendell Blair Low

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many educators consider the shortage of qualified teaching personnel as one of the most serious problems in education. In the past this shortage has been primarily confined to the elementary level. However, the United States Department of Education states:

Long-run forecasts of population indicate that employment of secondary teachers should be higher throughout the forty-year period 1960-2000 than in 1950. The long-range trend for a rising proportion of young people to attend high school is expected to continue. Greatly increased Federal and State aid to education might expand enrollments considerably. The trend toward enriching curriculum, offering special subjects, and extending …

Seasonal Distribution Of Mosquitoes In A Mile-Square Area West Of Logan, Utah, Takeshi Miura May 1956

Seasonal Distribution Of Mosquitoes In A Mile-Square Area West Of Logan, Utah, Takeshi Miura

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Mosquitoes are one of the most important groups of insects, because of their blood-sucking habit and their ability to transmit a number of serious diseases, such as malaria, yellow fever, dengue, encephalitis, and filiariasis.

The most important mosquito-borne disease in Utah is probably equine encephalomyelitis, which is a serious disease in man, horses, and mules. According to Spendlove and others (1953), this disease occurs every year in Utah:

Cases among horses usually are scattered, but severe horse epidemics in past years have destroyed hundreds of animals. Since this disease in humans is difficult to distinguish from other similar diseases, such …

The Political Process, Milton R. Merrill Apr 1956

The Political Process, Milton R. Merrill

Faculty Honor Lectures

The a priori basis on which this discussion rests is that individual human freedom is desirable. The defense of this thesis is not extensive nor profound-it is rather elementary and personal. There is a further assumption, for which limited historical argument is made, that freedom, the sine qua non of political life, is best achieved and cherished in the atmosphere of parliamentary democracy. There is recognition that such freedom is limited and controlled, but there is full acceptance that in degree it does and should exist.

The argument then proceeds to the analysis of the essential element in a democratic …

Bulletin No. 381 - The Organization And Structure Of Egg Marketing In Utah, Roice H. Anderson Apr 1956

Bulletin No. 381 - The Organization And Structure Of Egg Marketing In Utah, Roice H. Anderson

UAES Bulletins

Sale of eggs is one of the major sources of farm income in Utah. In 1954 egg receipts represented 8 percent of the farm cash income. This was the lowest percentage since 1929; receipts reached a high of 13 percent in 1935.

The relative importance of egg production doubled from 1924 to 1929 when the proportion of cash farm income from eggs increased from 4 to 9 percent. Since 1929 it has fluctuated without apparent trend. The percentage of cash income from eggs was high in years when egg prices were high relative to the other agricultural products and low …

Some Effects Of Inorganic Fluoride On Plants, Animals, And Man, Delbert A. Greenwood Mar 1956

Some Effects Of Inorganic Fluoride On Plants, Animals, And Man, Delbert A. Greenwood

Faculty Honor Lectures

~~~ in the compounds of fluorine may be traced to one or more of the following factors: ( 1) the consumption of a drinking water containing one part per million of fluorine as a soluble flouride during the period of calcification and eruption of the teeth causes a reduction in the incidence of tooth decay; however, an intake of drinking water containing more than two parts per million of fluorine causes dental fluorosis of varying degrees in man and certain animals; (2) a continuous intake of excessive amounts of fluorine as mineral supplement, in contaminated forage, or the grazing of …
Bulletin No. 384 - Virus And Viruslike Diseases Of Stone Fruits In Utah: A Handbook For Their Identification And Control, B. L. Richards, L. C. Cochran Jan 1956
Bulletin No. 384 - Virus And Viruslike Diseases Of Stone Fruits In Utah: A Handbook For Their Identification And Control, B. L. Richards, L. C. Cochran
UAES Bulletins
Intensive research over the last 20 years has shown that many of the previously unexplained and seemingly mysterious disorders of stone fruit trees in Utah are infectious diseases caused by viruses. Others were shown to be the result of noninfectious genetic abnormalities or of adverse chemical and physical factors in the environment of the plant. The purpose of this handbook is to help orchardists and others recognize these diseases and disorders and understand better their etiology or cause. The handbook will also bring together basic information which will aid in their control.
Bulletin No. 379 - Biology And Control Of The Peach Twig Borer (Anarsia Lineatella Zeller) In Utah, Charles J. Sorenson, Farrell H. Gunnell Dec 1955
Bulletin No. 379 - Biology And Control Of The Peach Twig Borer (Anarsia Lineatella Zeller) In Utah, Charles J. Sorenson, Farrell H. Gunnell
UAES Bulletins
The peach twig borer, Anarsia lineatella Zeller, sometimes called the peach worm, annually damages peach, apricot, nectarine, prune, and plum orchards in Utah. Many buds and twig terminals are destroyed each spring by the overwintered generation of partially grown larvae. These emerge from their winter quarters almost as soon as host trees begin their spring growth. From the time the fruit becomes about half grown until it is harvested, later generations of twig-borer larvae feed on it causing irregular, gummy cavities which make it unfit for market.
In order to work out a control program for any insect, its life …
Some Preliminary Investigations In The Montia Perfoliata Complex, Stephen S. Tillett May 1955
Some Preliminary Investigations In The Montia Perfoliata Complex, Stephen S. Tillett
Biology
The Montia perfoliata complex has long been an interest and puzzle to taxonomists. Even as early as 1893 a collection was "Sent from Cal. Acad., … , to show variation on a single hillside."* Various authors have lumped the complex into as few as one, and split it into as many as 18 species, not to mention the numerous varieties. Many field workers have noted the similarities and variation present, and the need for a study of the complex has been felt for some time. For these reasons, what might be considered a 'preliminary investigation' was undertaken to throw some …
Effects Of The Insecticide Endrin Upon The Alkaline Phosphatase Level Of The Albino Rat, S. Clive Nelson May 1955
Effects Of The Insecticide Endrin Upon The Alkaline Phosphatase Level Of The Albino Rat, S. Clive Nelson
Biology
Numerous studies have been made regarding the amount of distribution of chlorinated insecticides in the tissues and organs of the animal body in an attempt to determine their harmful effects. The majority of these studies have been concerned with histological observations and accumulation rates. This has suggested that other ways could be used to study the effects of the insecticides on animal tissues which might supplement histological and accumulative studies. The use of liver function tests might yield additional information in regard to the possible toxicity of the insecticide endrin. The test which was selected for this study was the …
