Near-Full-Scale Physical Modelling And Open-Channel Flow Velocity In A Fish-Friendly Culvert With Full-Height Sidewall Baffles, J. Hu, Y. Li, H. Chanson
Near-Full-Scale Physical Modelling And Open-Channel Flow Velocity In A Fish-Friendly Culvert With Full-Height Sidewall Baffles, J. Hu, Y. Li, H. Chanson
International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures
A near-full-scale physical modelling was performed on the oscillation and instability of open-channel flow in a fish-friendly culvert equipped with full-height sidewall baffles. High-resolution measurements of the instantaneous flow velocity were conducted using a Vectrino+ acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV). The physical results were marked by the existence of some low-frequency seiche phenomenon. A well-established triple decomposition technique was applied to the time series of free-surface and velocity time-series. The low-pass components confirmed a unique flow structure, consisting of a high-velocity zone in the main channel and a low-velocity flow reversal within the lateral cavities. The band-pass components corresponded to the …

Jet Scour In Cohesive And Non-Cohesive Soil, J. Di Nardi, M. Palermo, S. Pagliara, F. A. Bombardelli
International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures
A safe design of hydraulic structures depends on reliable estimations of the scour generated by the interaction between flow, structure, and bed sediments. Non-cohesive and cohesive soils are characterized by very different scour processes. Consequently, the behavior of the two soil types under scour has usually been studied separately. More specifically, cohesive soils are subjected to significant interparticle forces, which affect the properties of the material, resulting in different erosion mechanisms. Because of the complexity of the problem, erosion processes have been mainly investigated experimentally, resulting in a variety of case-dependent predicting equations. Recent theoretical advancements contributed to clarify the …
Prediction Of Discharge Coefficient Of Circular Side Orifice Through Machine Learning Technique, Syed Ahmed Noman, Ajmal Hussain, Mohd. Danish, Rashid Ali
Prediction Of Discharge Coefficient Of Circular Side Orifice Through Machine Learning Technique, Syed Ahmed Noman, Ajmal Hussain, Mohd. Danish, Rashid Ali
International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures
A sharp-crested circular side orifice is a crucial element when it comes to diverting flow from primary source to its subordinate source. Such a flow measurement instrument technique is of immense value in conservation and evaluation of drainage and irrigation networks. Usually, it is placed towards the side of a channel in order to regulate the flow of the fluid. Traditionally, coefficient of discharge was predicted through regression methods which are time-consuming and lack accuracy. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its applications in this domain have bridged this gap by providing novel alternative methods which prove much more efficient. Repeated studies …

Settler-On-Settler Violence: Ritual Protocols In Youtube Street Fight Videos - Part Two, Kelly Menzel, Tyson Yunkaporta
Journal of Indigenous Research
This is part two of a series of two papers exploring a project was conducted by two Australian Aboriginal researchers, one male and one female, and might be described as ‘reverse anthropology’, in the same way that people sometimes refer to positive discrimination as ‘reverse racism’. But we would just call it anthropology; a tidal river is still a river when it flows back the other way. The project could hardly be acknowledged as anthropology though, as it was based on Indigenous methods of inquiry that do not yet belong to a formal discipline. Initially the goal was to disrupt …
Sustaining Water Conservation: A Synthesis Of Research On Motivators, Message Construction, And Tactics, Mahmudur R. Aveek, David E. Rosenberg
Sustaining Water Conservation: A Synthesis Of Research On Motivators, Message Construction, And Tactics, Mahmudur R. Aveek, David E. Rosenberg
Civil and Environmental Engineering Student Research
Urban water managers face the challenge of sustaining conservation behavior. A review of 77 papers across water, energy, and environmental conservation was conducted to understand how programs encourage reduced water use. Motivators were external or internal. Theories of behavior change targeted different social-psychological factors. No single model addressed all aspects. Different message contents (water use, self-comparison, social comparison, leak information) and tactics (communication medium, frequency, program duration) reduced use by 0.5% to 25%. Reductions typically lasted less than a year. Quantifying the effects of specific motivators, message contents, and tactics was difficult due to varied contexts. Effective conservation messages included …

Assisted Migration Is Plausible For A Boreal Tree Species Under Climate Change: A Quantitative And Population Genetics Study Of Trembling Aspen (Populus Tremuloides Michx.) In Western Canada, Chen Ding, Jean S. Brouard
Aspen Bibliography
A novel method was tested for improving tree breeding strategies that integrate quantitative and population genetics based on range-wide reciprocal transplant experiments. Five reciprocal common garden tests of Populus tremuloides were investigated including 6450 trees across western Canada focusing on adaptation traits and growth. Both genetic parameters and home-site transplant models were evaluated. We found a genetic trade-off between growth and early spring leaf flush and late fall senescence. Coefficients of phenotypic variation (CVp) of cell lysis (CL), a measure of freezing injury, shrank from 0.28 to 0.10 during acclimation in the fall, and the CVp slope versus …

Water Banking Can Help Great Salt Lake, Sarah E. Null
Water Banking Can Help Great Salt Lake, Sarah E. Null
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
Utah’s Great Salt Lake is a treasured resource, yet dedicated flows have not been established to preserve the economic, ecological, and cultural values that the lake provides. Utah’s prior appropriation law allocates water rights based on time of first use, meaning agricultural water uses typically have senior rights. Utah’s Water Banking Act, which was adopted in 2020, presents an opportunity to reallocate some water to the environment within existing appropriative rights water law.
Under the act, water users can create local water banks to temporarily lease water. Leased water can be used for various purposes, including environmental or agricultural uses. …

Type I interferons (IFNs) initiate immune responses to viral infections. Their effects are mediated by the type I IFN receptor, IFNAR, comprised of two subunits: IFNAR1 and IFNAR2. One or both chains of the sheep IFNAR were disrupted in fetal fibroblast lines using CRISPR/Cas9 and 12 lambs were produced by somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT). Quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction for IFN-stimulated gene expression showed that IFNAR deficient sheep fail to respond to IFN-alpha. Furthermore, fibroblast cells from an IFNAR2−/− fetus supported significantly higher levels of Zika virus (ZIKV) replication than wild-type fetal fibroblast cells. Although many lambs have …

Evaluation Of Hydrograph Separation Techniques With Uncertain End-Member Composition, Eileen Page Lukens, Bethany T. Neilson, Kenneth H. Williams, Janice Brahney
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
Hydrograph separation is one of many approaches used to analyse shifts in source water contributions to stream flow resulting from climate change in remote watersheds. Understanding these shifts is vital, as shifts in source water contributions to a stream can shape water management decisions. Because remote watersheds are often inaccessible and have poorly characterized contributing water sources, or end-members, it is critical to understand the implications of using different hydrograph separation techniques in these data-limited environments. To explore the uncertainty associated with different techniques, results from two hydrograph separation techniques, mass balance and principle component analysis, were compared using 3 …

Mammals have displayed spectacular evolutionary success ever since an asteroid impact caused the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event ~66 million years ago, when the non-avian dinosaurs disappeared. Now another mass extinction event is underway because of another major planetary disturbance, but this time it is directly caused by just one over-achieving species among all those mammals: Homo sapiens.

Social Predictors Of Doctoral Student Mental Health And Well-Being, Feng Zhang, Kaylee Litson, David F. Feldon
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
Graduate students' mental health and well-being is a prominent concern across various disciplines. However, early predictors of mental health and well-being in graduate education, specifically doctoral education, have rarely been studied. The present study evaluated both the underlying latent classification of individuals' mental well-being and predictors of those classifications. Results estimated two latent classes of students' mental health and well-being: one class with generally high levels of mental well-being and one with lower levels of mental well-being. Regression analyses showed that mentoring in the second year of doctoral study, certainty of choice in the thrid year, and both academic development …
Pando's Pulse: Vital Signs Signal Need For Course Correction At World-Renowned Aspen Forest, Paul C. Rogers
Pando's Pulse: Vital Signs Signal Need For Course Correction At World-Renowned Aspen Forest, Paul C. Rogers
Aspen Bibliography
Upland aspen (Populus spp.) forests contribute significantly to biodiversity in their circumboreal role as keystone species. As aspen ecosystems flourish or diminish, myriad dependent species follow suit. The 43-hectare Pando aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) clone in Utah, USA, is thought to be the largest living organism on earth, but is faltering due to chronic herbivory. Long-term resilience in aspen communities, including Pando, rests on successful recruitment of vegetative suckers that are nutritiously desirable to browsing ungulates. Here, I evaluate aspen reproduction alongside numerous vital indicators of Pando's status in the first trend assessment of this embattled iconic forest. …

Ungulate Herbivores As Drivers Of Aspen Recruitment And Understory Composition Throughout Arid Montane Landscapes, Elizabeth S. Reikowski, Tyler Refsland, J. Hall Cushman
Aspen Bibliography
Herbivory by wild and domestic ungulates can influence tree recruitment and understory forest communities throughout the world. Herbivore-driven declines in tree recruitment have been observed for quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides), a foundation species whose health and management is recognized as a critical priority throughout much of its range. Livestock fencing is commonly used to promote aspen regeneration, but its effectiveness is rarely assessed, especially across large spatial scales. Using a livestock-reduction experiment, we evaluated the effects of ungulate herbivory on aspen in the Great Basin and southern Cascades, an expansive and environmentally heterogeneous region where aspen faces the …

Psychology Faculty Publications
Research on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and its application to various clinical issues have proliferated across the world. Despite very active clusters of ACT research occurring worldwide, the science that is disseminated through the literature does not fully reflect this scope and diversity, with Iran serving as a prime example of this issue. To increase awareness of ACT research findings in Iran, we conducted a systematic review of 110 randomized trials and extracted data on key study features. RCTs were identified, suggesting the efficacy of ACT in Iran for a wide range of clinical areas, including anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive …

Invasive species can dramatically alter ecosystems, but eradication is difficult, and suppression is expensive once they are established. Uncertainties in the potential for expansion and impacts by an invader can lead to delayed and inadequate suppression, allowing for establishment. Metapopulation viability models can aid in planning strategies to improve responses to invaders and lessen invasive species’ impacts, which may be particularly important under climate change. We used a spatially-explicit metapopulation viability model to explore suppression strategies for ecologically-damaging invasive brown trout (Salmo trutta), established in the Colorado River and a tributary within Grand Canyon National Park. Our goals …

Integrated Pest And Pollinator Management, Ann Mull, Lori R. Spears, Marion Murray, Ricardo Ramirez
All Current Publications
An inextricable link exists between humans and pollinators, with benefits that include ecosystem health and function and human food security. Bees, butterflies, moths, wasps, flies, and beetles are responsible for most the world's pollination services. Considering the mounting scientific evidence denoting global pollinator declines, there is a critical need to prioritize pollinators and the essential services they provide. This fact sheet provides information about integrated pest and pollinator management (IPPM), which goes beyond integrated pest management (IPM) to include proactive, preventive measures that consider pollinators as well as pests in horticulture management.

We conducted a range-wide investigation of the dynamics of site-level reproductive rate of northern spotted owls using survey data from 11 study areas across the subspecies geographic range collected during 1993–2018. Our analytical approach accounted for imperfect detection of owl pairs and misclassification of successful reproduction (i.e., at least one young fledged) and contributed further insights into northern spotted owl population ecology and dynamics. Both nondetection and state misclassification were important, especially because factors affecting these sources of error also affected focal ecological parameters. Annual probabilities of site occupancy were greatest at sites with successful reproduction in the previous year …
