Relationships Between Foster Home Placement And Later Acculturation Patterns Of Selected American Indians, Robert Dean Smith

A survey was made of the graduates of an educationally-oriented church-sponsored foster home placement agency. The subjects for the study had been graduated from high schools in Idaho, Arizona, Canada, and throughout Utah. There were 235 students graduated during the period 1954-1967. The survey of these subjects was made by the use of the mailed questionnaire method. Responses were received from 165 (70.21 percent) of the subjects.

The investigator was searching for modal patterns of behavior among the graduates. Some significant trends seem to be emerging in their post-high school activities. Implications for future studies of the culturally disadvantaged are …

The relationship between breadth of perspective, defined as the range of alternative solutions that one is able to bring to mind when presented with a problem, and selected aptitude and background factors was studied. Scholastic aptitude was the chosen aptitude factor. The background factors chosen were: (1) size of home town; (2) number of towns lived in; (3) number of children in the family of origin; (4) the subject's perception of his travel experience; (5) number of books read during the past year; and (6) number of friends of other nationalities.

Occurrence And Distribution Of Invertebrates In Lower Logan River, Nancy A. Erman

A study of bottom invertebrates on the lower Logan River, Logan, Utah was conducted from June 1966 to July 1967. One objective was to evaluate on a qualitative and quantitative basis the invertebrate populations above and below a sewage entry in the river. Another objective was to study the year-round fluctuations in the invertebrate population.

The greatest variety of invertebrates was found in the summer. Chironomidae and Baetis were the only two groups found in abundance over the entire year.

Populations were reduced during autumn when water levels rose, and they declined even more sharply during the spring flood.

Agonistic behavior of ground squirrels was studied for two years in north-eastern Utah at an elevation of 6,300 feet. The main objective was to determine what role agonistic behavior had in regulating density in a population. All individuals in an unconfined population were trapped I marked I and observed from towers. Detailed data on behavior and density were recorded.

Dinosaur National Monument, in northwestern Colorado and northeastern Utah, is comprised of 206,409 acres and contains several deer winter ranges. A need for deer studies developed because of winter deer mortality and deteriorating range conditions on some parts of the Monument.

Approximately 500 deer winter on the Yampa Bench and approximately 300 deer winter on the Island Park winter range. These are the two main winter ranges within the Monument.

The study was initiated to determine how sheep ranches were physically and economically organized in 1964 and to select range and livestock management alternatives which would be profitable to sheep ranches. With data collected from the ranches three model ranches, representing the three most prominent strata, were constructed. These strata were determined by number of breeding ewes that were on the ranch and by the season of grazing on government land, i.e., winter, summer, or year around. A descriptive study was made of the administrative provisions, teaching qualifications and characteristics, subjects and topics being taught, and resources used in teaching family life education in the high schools of Utah.

"Some" family life education was being taught in 98 per cent of the high schools. Of these schools, 82 per cent were teaching it as a unit in a regular class varying widely from Home and Family Living to Livestock Management.

A comparative study of phytoseiid populations was made of two well-cultivated and regularly sprayed apple orchards with two unsprayed orchards in Cache Valley, northern Utah.

Two phytoseiid species, Typhlodromus mcgregori Chant and T. occidentalis Nesbitt were observed on the apple leaves, under the bark, and occasionally in the litter and soil. Amblyseius cucumeris (Oudemans) occurred in the soil and litter and occasionally under bark. T. mcgregori was dominant in the unsprayed orchards, and T. occidentalis in the sprayed.

Of the phytophagous mites, which served as food for the phytoseiids, the two-spotted mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch was dominant. Other phytophagous mites …

The purpose of this study was to examine and compare some of the personality characteristics of junior high school students as they related to the students' later vocational choices. More specifically selected personality characteristics observed in girls who later made typical or atypical vocational selection were compared. Both typical and atypical girls were also compared to boys on these selected personality characteristics.

The characteristics of tourists visiting Utah that are pertinent to defining target markets for the direction of state promotion programs were studied and analyzed during the summer of 1966.

Five significant geographical-party composition target markets were identified as prospective tourist markets. These were California families, East-West North Central families, Western families, East-West North Central couples, and California couples.

Target markets of enroute tourist parties were also identified for instate promotional efforts. The markets identified were divided on their relative degree of vacation planning and willingness to deviate from a planned route to visit additional attractions.

Four non-licking guinea pigs were reinforced with water for successive approximations to licking an operandum feeder. Once all subjects had obtained their total liquid intake for a three-week period by licking, an optimum deprivation schedule was determined.

Fixed ratio and variable interval schedules were found to affect licking behavior of the guinea pig in a similar way as with the rat, mean lick rate of guinea pigs being slightly lower than that of the rat. Precise control over the onset and offset of licking was demonstrated through discrimination training.

This study attempted to investigate the relationship of occupational choice to ego identity achievement, to self-concept, and to academic achievement, as these are related to Eric Erikson's contention that is adolescents' inability to settle on an occupational choice which disturbs them and results in a sense of identity diffusion (lack of solidified ideas of self, goals for life, and a need to seek external supports).

The effects of learning upon the rate of conservation attainment and its transference to other areas of performance were studied using 17 mentally retarded subjects.

Subjects found to be non-conservers on pretests were taught conservation and correspondence using a variety of tasks modeled from Piaget's experiments. They were also pretested on the WISC Information and Picture Arrangement Sub-tests and a number concept test. Following the learning experiences, the subjects were posttested using the same measures used for pretesting with the exception of the number test where an alternate form was used.

Grading within a single school was studied by comparing the grades with the policy of grading recommended by the high school, and the relationship between the grades and two tests administered by the school.

Six hundred fifty-five graduates from the 1964, 1965 and 1966 graduating classes made up the sample. The grades used were those received during their three years in high school. The tests were the Henmon-Nelson Test of Mental Ability administered in the tenth grade and the American College Test which was taken in the twelfth grade. A method was developed for the extraction of rennet from fresh frozen vells. Frozen vells were partially thawed and minced in a Hobart "Wonder worker." The tissue was treated with 2.0 per cent potassium alum and allowed to stand for 20 hours before sufficient 0.45 M disodium phosphate was added to bring the pH of the mixture to 5.7. Dry sodium chloride was added until the salt concentration in the moisture of the mixture was 10 per cent. The tissue was then mixed with 3/4-inch pumice gravel in a volume ratio of 1 to 2 and packed into extractor columns. …

The effect of oven temperature, dry-roasting, and breed on the eating quality of beef was determined by sensory and objective methods. Two adjacent standing rib and two adjacent chuck roasts of prime, choice, and good grades from animals of Hereford, Shorthorn, and Charolais breeding were dry-roasted. Control roasts (9-12th ribs) were cooked at 325 F. Experimental roasts (6-8th rib and two chucks) were assigned an oven temperature of 325 or 250 F at random. All roasts were allowed to reach ah internal temperature of 155 F as recorded on a potentiometer.

Five normal healthy young university women while on self-chosen diets and living under normal conditions served as experimental subjects in this study. Urinary pregnanediol was measured for 10 days of the menstrual cycle. Meal frequency (3 meals vs. 2 meals with no breakfast) was also included in the study.

A modification of the method of Eberlein and Bongiovanni on thin layer chromatography was used to determine pregnanediol in the urine sample.

Three Hundred and nine specimens of Gila from the Colorado River basin were studied. A form of numerical taxonomy, taximetrics, was used to help classify the specimens. The data from these fish indicate that many of the present hypotheses concerning their taxonomy are not valid. The concept of ecosubspecies or ecological subspecies does not fit the Colorado basin Gila. The roundtail and bonytail chubs, G. robusta Baird and Girard and G. elegans Baird and Girard respectively, currently treated as subspecies, are well separated morphologically, ecologically and reproductively and therefore are better considered two valid species. The effect of temperature and inoculum density on the incidence of disease on radish caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kühn was studied. The fungus attacks radish at one or more stages during host development and causes pre- and pose-emergence damping-off, root rot, and storage-organ decay. The isolate of the fungus used in the study was obtained from infected radishes grown in Salt Lake County, Utah.

Synthesis of piperidine-2-carboxylic acid (pipecolic acid) in soybean was studied by infiltration of radioactive carbon labeled precursor and by experiments using enzyme extracts from control and fluoride-fumigated plants.

Pipecolic acid was synthesized from lysine in both control and treated plants. Normal plants, in which pipecolic acid had not been detected by conventional procedures, were capable of synthesizing pipecolic acid. Greater pipecolic acid synthesis was shown in treated plants than in controls, and was attributed to increased enzyme concentration induced by fluoride treatment.

Experiments have demonstrated that Verticillium dahliae is capable of direct cortical penetration of roots and of subsequent distribution throughout plants of both resistant (Loran Blood) and susceptible (Meteor) varieties of tomato. Plants were inoculated by the root dip method and planted in sterile soil. After one week the fungus was isolated from the upper portions of both the susceptible and resistant varieties as indicated by growth petiole sections plated on PDA. The distribution of the fungus in the resistant plants was irregular, but in susceptible plants the fungus was isolated regularly from all petiole sections. In experiments using disposable growth …

A study was performed using isolates of Verticillium albo-atrum which were reported as varying in their pathogenicities to a susceptible and resistant tomato variety. Also included as objectives in this undertaking were cross-protection and effects of spore density in the inoculum on the development and severity of Verticillium wilt of tomatoes.

After retesting the strains which were reported as pathogenic variants, results suggested that reported variabilities were non-existent in most of the isolates and instead there were only two pathogenic type-categories: (a) strains pathogenic to both resistant and susceptible tomato varieties; and (b) strains pathogenic only to the susceptible variety. …
