The increased demand for more school counselors since World War II raised many questions concerning their preparation and training. One of the most controversial topics has been that of requiring teaching experience as a prerequisite for counselor certification. We find ourselves in a milieu of controversy in which some advocates are proposing that teaching experience can handicap the counselor in his effectiveness while others are saying that teaching experience is a vital prerequisite for counselor effectiveness.

Microenvironmental Effects Of Erosion Control Treatments On Seedling Survival In A Southeastern Utah Salt Desert Area, Ross W. Wein

A study of the microclimate of erosion control treatments was carried out in two habitat types in a semiarid southeastern Utah, salt desert shrub area. The soils are highly eroded Mancos shale and support a low density of salt desert shrub species which offers little protection against high intensity summer convectional rainstorms.

Gully plugs and contour furrows had been installed by the Bureaus of Reclamation and Land Management to prevent runoff of soil laden water which results from these summer rainfalls. Formerly this sediment was carried to the Colorado River and deposited in Lake Powell.

Analysis Of Fruit Juices And Drinks Of Ascorbic Acid Content, Anna Man-Saw Liu

A total of 33 common fruit juices and drinks representing 15 different fruits were analyzed for ascorbic acid content by a slight modification of the method of Loeffler and Ponting (1942). The juices ranged from 0.96 to 50.88 mg per 100 ml. The drinks ranged from 2.12 to 66.10 mg. All the citrus juices ranked high in ascorbic acid content. One drink was fortified with sufficient ascorbic acid to contain considerably more vitamin than was found in pure orange juice.

Biology

Technical parathion, 98.5 per cent pure, was further purified by column chromatography in a darkened room. The purity of this parathion was measured by a manometric technique (Nakatsugawa and Dahm, 1962; 1965). Only 5 per cent inhibition at 2.5 x 10^-5 molar parathion was observed with horse serum cholinesterase. Alkali bee prepupae were dug from their natural sites, and reared under the laboratory conditions until they emerged. The bees were kept in one quart mason jars, and they were fed a 25 per cent aqueous sucrose solution. All biological assays were conducted by topical application of 1 microliter of …

Cell line and established cell line cultures were tested for their ability to support in vitro development of Eimeria bovis. Among the cell types tested were embryonic bovine kidney, spleen, thymus, testicle, intestine and trachea cells, embryonic human intestine cells, mouse L cells, and Madin-Darby adult bovine kidney cells. Monolayer cell cultures were serially propagated in disposable prescription bottles and transferred to Leighton tubes for use in experiments. Coverslips from Leighton tube cultures inoculated with sporozoites were examined with phase-contrast or Zeiss Nomarski interference contrast microscopy for as long as 21 days after inoculation. The biology, life history, oviposition behavior, and host synchronization pattern of Amblymerus bruchophagi (Gahan) were studied under laboratory conditions. The possibility of rearing this parasite on unnatural hosts was also investigated. The development of the parasite from egg to adult was 10.5 days at 27 C; one generation requires less than two weeks. The average life span of the male was 20.7 days, almost 10 days less than that of the female. Females laid an average of 251 eggs over a period of 35 days. Equations, tables, and graphs for estimating evaporation from sheltered evaporimeters were developed, based on data from 20 stations in Colombia.

Computer programs and plottings were the basic tools to work out the equations. The form of the simplified final equation is

• Ev is the evaporation in millimeters per day
• K is a constant
• C_VPD is the vapor pressure deficit coefficient
• C_T is the temperature coefficient

Statistical parameters were determined to compare the measured evaporation with the Christiansen-Guillen formula and the newly developed formulas.

Waterfowl utilization was recorded by observing study units at different elevations from the time water areas were thawed in the spring until they were frozen in the fall.

Sixteen species of waterfowl were observed in the Uinta Mountain; mallards, green-winged teal, pintails, and ring-necked ducks were breeders.

Ninety-eight percent of all waterfowl observed were below 10,000 feet.

Waterfowl numbers were highest during migratory periods and lowest in the breeding season.

Adult waterfowl were observed most often on natural water areas and beaver ponds greater than one acre.

Water areas at lower elevations had high indices of aquatic invertebrates and contained …

A study of nucleic acid changes influenced by gibberellic acid and chilling treatments in peach seed was performed in an attempt to reach a better understanding of the mechanism involved in breaking seed dormancy.

Gibberellic acid and the chilling treatment increased the RNA content. These two treatments which break dormancy also increased RNA, suggesting a similar mechanism involving RNA. Chilled seeds contained more RNA than did the gibberellic acid treated seeds.

DNA content remained unchanged regardless of treatment.

Dry seed had a greater ribonuclease activity than with soaked seeds. Enzyme changes did not correlate well with the RNA content in …

Nine populations of sixty-eight individuals representing the distribution of Petrophytum caespitosum (Nutt.) Rydb. (Rosaceae) in the Intermountain Region were investigated for taxonomically significant variation using numerical techniques. On the basis of 19 morphological characters 3 subspecific taxa are recognized. Two taxa are existing subspecies: P. caespitosum (Nutt.) Rydb. var. caespitosum and P. caespitosum (Nutt.) Rydb. var. elatius (S. Wats.) Tides. One new subspecies is described: P. caespitosum (Nutt.) Rydb. var. latifolium. The ecology of the species is discussed. A study of the adaptive changes of some enzyme activities to the dietary protein intake was made in the liver, kidney, and pancreas of rats and serum of humans.

The rats fed the 40 per cent casein diet had a higher rate of weight gain and the weights of the liver and kidney were higher than in the rats fed the 10 per cent casein diet.

Three enzymes involved in the elimination of excess nitrogen from the body were found to show a similar response to increased dietary protein intake. These enzymes were: D-amino acid oxidase in the kidneys, arginase …

This study attempted to discover some parameters in terms of mental age at which young children, ages five through eight, begin to utilize effectively their mental imagery in the learning process. Using Piaget's principles of conservation as a learning task, subjects were taught in one of two groups: Group one was instructed in conservation concepts by use of concrete example, in which case they were allowed to see, handle and manipulate materials as they underwent transformations. Group two received identical instruction but were called upon to use their mental imagery to visualize the materials undergoing transformations.

Four of them are, water level fluctuation, pollution, turbidity and the close proximity of other recreation sites of possible high desirability. This thesis explores these four problems and offers solutions and recommendations to solve or otherwise control their effect on recreation at Utah Lake.

A group of hospitalized psychiatric patients and a randomly selected non-therapy group responded to the Schedule of Recent Experiences questionniare. In order to determine the magnitude of life change events for the two groups, Life Change Unit totals were derived for the years 1966 and 1967.

To test the hypothesis that patients in psychiatric treatment have experienced a quantitatively significant greater amount of life change than a group of non-therapy subjects, an analysis of variance was used to determine whether there were significant differences between the scores for the two groups.

This study dealt with the Intermountain aconites of which the chromosome number of n = 8 was obtained.

The bumblebees, Bombus rufocinctus Cresson, B. appositus Cresson, and B. centralis Cresson, are the major pollinators of the allogamous and autogamous aconites.

Two-dimensional thin layer chromatography of cauline leaf extracts showed that the Intermountain aconites studied here consist of one chemical group.

The overall evidence indicates that the Intermountain aconites consist of one species, Aconitum columbianum Nutt., with two varieties, variety columbianum and variety ochroleucum A. Nels.

A new species of planaria in the genus Phagocata was found in several springs and spring-fed streams in Logan Canyon, Cache County, Utah. This species was named Phagocata crenophila because it greatly prefers to live in springs and it seems to be adapted behaviorally to this type of habitat. Serial sections and whole mounts were made by standard methods in order to study the anatomical features which are necessary for identification of planarians.
