To analyze the effect of potential energy development on water allocation and water quality in the Upper Colorado River Basin, a linear programming model is formulated. Using the model, changes in salinity are predicted. Further, least-cost strategies to maintain the established numeric salinity criteria through both structural and nonstructural alternatives are developed. The effectiveness of alternative control measures are examined within given institutional constraints. Based on cost-benefit analysis, optimal salinity levels over time are proposed. The economic feasibility of presently planned strucutral measures to reduce salinity is investigated and contrasted with nonstructural alternatives.

The purposes of this study were to evaluate virus removal in treatment of water supplies by an in-line direct filtration pilot plant system and to suggest a system design to enhance virus removal. Isotherm and jar tests were conducted to evaluate the effects of pH, sodium ion concentration, and coagulants (alum and cationic polyelectrolytes Cat-Floc T, Nalco 8102, and 8103) on the bacteriophage MS2 contained in water. Isotherm studies were also conducted to assess the kinetic adsorption of MS2 to sand, anthracite, and garnet. Several models were developed to predict the efficiency of the intermittent sand filter (ISF) in removing algae from wastewater stabilization pond effluent; volatile suspended solids (VSS) was the analytical technique used to identify algal concentrations. The first (ISF model) and second (modified ISF model) models consisted of two distinct portions: a surface algal layer (SAL) component and a sand phase component. The effects of oil shale leachate and salinity additions on the productivity of freshwater algae were studied in the laboratory using batch bioassays. These batch bioassays were used to screen variations of ten salts in single and multiple additions of all possible combinations of the ten salts; water extractions of different processed and unprocessed oil shales; and the concentration effects of both the salts from 0.3 N to 0.05 N as NaCl and the oil shale extractions on the growth of standard test algae and indigenous algae from Lake Powell. A probabilistic river water quality model is developed with the capability of determinging the joint and marginal probability density function of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and dissolved oxygen (DO) at any point in a river. The one dimensional steady-state model can be applied to a river system with any reasonable number of point loads and diversions and lateral surface and subsurface inflow. The model can simultaneously consider randomness in the intital conditions, inputs, and coefficients of the water quality equations. Workers usually ignore damage to alfalfa by feeding adult alfalfa weevils because: (1) weevil feeding is prolonged and relatively undramatic, (2) it is difficult to sample adults because they drop to the ground, and (3) most adults, during summer, feed at night. Adult weevils were studied on caged alfalfa in the field and in the laboratory using alfalfa leaf disks. Feeding intakes were determined after 2 days, using dry weight. Both newly developed adults and old adults immediately following overwintering, were studied under various light and temperature conditions. The effects of prostaglandins (PGs) F2α and E2, 3 ',5 '-guanosine monophosphate (C-GMP), testosterone and 2,4'-dibromoacetophenone (DBA) on the contractility of rat seminiferous tubules in vitro were ascertained, measuring contractile frequency, magnitude of contractions and tubular diameter. PGF2α increased the frequency and tonus in a dose dependent manner, but magnitude of contraction was not significantly modified by PGF2α. Frequency and tonus were decreased in a dose-dependent manner by PGE2 while the magnitude of contractions was not significantly affected. C-GMP increased the frequency of contractions and tonus whereas the magnitude of contractions decreased with increasing concentrations. Testosterone decreased the frequency of …

The Chorus Girl Hypothesis (CGH) is presented to explain the rapid transfer of information through a flock during synchronous maneuvers. The primary feature of the hypothesis is that flock members receive information concerning the maneuver in advance of the leading edge of the maneuver wave. This advance warning allows flock members to time their own execution of the maneuver to coincide with the arrival of the maneuver wave, essentially eliminating the relatively large time lags that would be associated with a neighbor-to-neighbor transfer of information.
