Intraventricular Hemorrhage Sequelae In Low Birthweight Infants: A Meta-Analysis, Shannon G. Thompson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Technological advances in neonatal care have dramatically improved the survival and disability rates among low birthweight infants (LBW). One common factor associated with later problems among these babies is intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). A meta-analysis was conducted among LBW infants with and without IVH to determine developmental outcome. More than 450 studies were located. Only 125 studies met inclusion criteria.

Mean effect sizes were computed by comparing the LBW group to either a fullterm control group or to test norms. When compared to fullterm children, LBW children scored worse in all areas except gross motor skills.

Cognitive assessment was done commonly …

The Cache Valley Shoshones: Cultural Change, Subsistence, And Resistance, To 1870, John W. Heaton May 1993

The Cache Valley Shoshones: Cultural Change, Subsistence, And Resistance, To 1870, John W. Heaton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the xii Shoshones of Cache Valley evolved from scattered pedestrian hunter-gatherers to large, armed, mounted bands that hunted and gathered from the Great Basin to the Plains. Trade with European Americans helped initiate this evolution. However, Shoshones did not respond passively to the presence of European Americans. Shoshones actively sought change, and incorporated trade goods into their culture within a Shoshone context. They adapted to each wave of European Americans that they encountered. When Mormons dispossessed them of their land, Cache Valley Shoshones resisted by going on the offensive. Finally overwhelmed, the remnants of …

A Philosophical Investigation Of Sexual Jealousy And Jealousy In Shakespeare's Othello, Cymbeline, And The Winter's Tale, Greg P. Miner May 1993

A Philosophical Investigation Of Sexual Jealousy And Jealousy In Shakespeare's Othello, Cymbeline, And The Winter's Tale, Greg P. Miner

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Many poets, social scientists, and philosophers have tried to understand, explain, and define jealousy. The methods employed in their pursuits are as varied as the different conclusions they have given. Three of the difficulties involved in the pursuit of jealousy are: the complex nature of jealousy, the significant role jealousy plays in interpersonal relationships, and the labyrinth encountered when trying to distinguish between jealousy and envy. The most common questions asked about jealousy are: What is jealousy? and, How can jealousy be helped? This paper will focus on the question: What is jealousy? Specifically, the following questions will be answered. …

Gregarious Behavior In Large Mammals: Modeling, Methodology, And Application, Thomas L. Morton May 1993

Gregarious Behavior In Large Mammals: Modeling, Methodology, And Application, Thomas L. Morton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Gregarious behavior of ungulates was considered in four ways. The first concern was W. D. Hamilton's hypothesis that a simple movement rule could reduce predation risk and encourage grouping behavior. Simulations showed little effect of this nearest-neighbor rule on predation risk. Similar, more complicated rules reduced predation risk by up to two thirds.

The second focus was on the accuracy of ground observers in diagramming individual animal locations in small herds of elk. A remotely controlled airplane was used to photograph the herds from above. A substantial distance discrepancy was found between "true" and "observed" animal locations. This discrepancy increased …

Influence Of The Ruminant Digestive Process On The Germinability Of Range Forage Species, Mohammed S. Al-Mashikhi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Ingestion and dispersal of seeds of desirable species by domestic livestock is potentially important as a range improvement practice, but the passage of seed by livestock has only been studied in a fragmented way, particularly for species adapted to rangelands of western North America. The objectives of this research were to examine the effects of different periods of exposure to in vitro and in vivo digestion processes in cattle on the germinability of several grass species, and determine if the in vitro incubation technique is a good predictor of seed fate following passage through the ruminant digestive tract.

Seeds of …

Analysis Of Cutthroat Flume Discharge Ratings, Liyan Ren May 1993

Analysis Of Cutthroat Flume Discharge Ratings, Liyan Ren

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Sixteeen sets of original laboratory data collected by many investigators for various Cutthroat flume sizes are thoroughly reviewed and organized. Best-fit discharge parameters are obtained by performing the free-flow analysis and the submerged-flow analysis. Then, the transition submergence can be calculated. Afterwards, the unified free-flow and submerged-flow discharge parameters are developed for each flume size in order to generalize the calibrations for Cutthroat flumes. This is a very tedious process requiring a trial-and-error approach. Finally, comparisons are made of the measured laboratory discharges with the predicted discharges for both free flow and submerged flow using both the best-fit and the …

I studied nutrient reserves, digestive organs, molt intensity, diets, and seasonal changes in food resources available to postbreeding adult male Northern Pintails (Anas acuta) and Cinnamon Teal (Anas cyanoptera) in marshes near Great Salt Lake, Utah. Total lipid and protein reserves of Northern Pintails were lower during the flightless period than before or after. For Cinnamon Teal, total protein was lowest during the flightless period, and total lipid showed a similar trend. Total mineral did not differ among plumage classes in either species. Use of nutrient reserves in these species may be an endogenous rhythm in …

Competitive Interaction Between Crested Wheatgrasses And Cheatgrass, Mark G. Francis May 1993

Competitive Interaction Between Crested Wheatgrasses And Cheatgrass, Mark G. Francis

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Current revegetation practices in the lntermountain West include the use of Nordan (Agropyron desertorum) and Hycrest (A. cristatum x desertorum) crested wheatgrass on rangeland susceptible to cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) invasion, although little quantitative data exists that compares their competitive abilities. We evaluated both the competitive ability of Hycrest and Nordan in two-species mixtures with cheatgrass, and evaluated seedling establishment characteristics for all three species in a greenhouse study. Linear and nonlinear models were developed for a range of densities for each species to predict median above-ground biomass and tiller numbers. In both experiments, increasing …

To study the effect of NaCl stress on gene expression in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), greenhouse and laboratory experiments were conducted with 22 cultivars during germination and post-germination growth. The ability of alfalfa cultivars to germinate at the different NaCl concentrations was not related to their postgermination performance (salt tolerance) under those conditions.

Genetic effects were evident for Na and Cl ion uptake and accumulation in alfalfa shoots and roots. The strategies of alfalfa cultivars to cope with NaCl stress includes exclusion of Na from shoots and Cl from roots or from the whole plant depending on cultivar and …

The Relationship Between Marcia's Ego Identity Status Paradigm And Erikson's Psychosocial Theory, Lawrence Anderson May 1993

The Relationship Between Marcia's Ego Identity Status Paradigm And Erikson's Psychosocial Theory, Lawrence Anderson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

While Erikson's psychosocial theory continues to dominate theoretical explanations of adolescent identity development. Marcia's ego identity status paradigm has become the primary basis to empirically measure such notions. Though Marcia's paradigm has its roots in psychosocial theory. questions have surfaced regarding the communality of Marcia's and Erikson's notions on identity. Issues of scope. connectedness. definition. terminology. and measurement have marked a potential divergence among the two approaches-views which until recently seemed almost unified. This study addressed the relationship between Erikson's psychosocial theory and Marcia's ego identity status paradigm. By administering identity and psychosocial stage-specific measures to a sample of college-age …

Characterization Of A Dexamethasone-Immunosuppressed C57bl/6n Mouse Model For Chronic Cryptosporidiosis, Edward G. Martin May 1993

Characterization Of A Dexamethasone-Immunosuppressed C57bl/6n Mouse Model For Chronic Cryptosporidiosis, Edward G. Martin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Cryptosporidium parvum is a coccidian protozoan that colonizes epithelial cells lining respiratory and digestive tracts of animals and humans. Cryptosporidiosis is a well-recognized zoonotic disease infecting primarily neonates and immunocompromised hosts, including human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients. Clinical disease is manifested as a chronic diarrheal illness that is self-limiting in immunocompetent hosts and prolonged and often life-threatening in hosts with compromised immune systems. The lack of a suitable small animal model for screening anti-cryptosporidial drugs and for examining the pathogenicity and immunobiology of chronic cryptosporidosis was the impetus for this research effort.

The objectives of the present study were three-fold: to …

Morphological And Histochemical Changes In Intercellular Junctional Complexes In Epithelial Cells Of Mouse Small Intestine Upon X-Irradiation: Changes Of Ruthenium Red Permeability And Calcium Content, Z. Somosy, J. Kovács, L. Siklós, G. J. Köteles Apr 1993

Morphological And Histochemical Changes In Intercellular Junctional Complexes In Epithelial Cells Of Mouse Small Intestine Upon X-Irradiation: Changes Of Ruthenium Red Permeability And Calcium Content, Z. Somosy, J. Kovács, L. Siklós, G. J. Köteles

Scanning Microscopy

Changes of calcium-content and permeability of tight junction following X-irradiation were investigated in mouse intestinal epithelial cells by electron microscopy. In the control animals the lower parts of tight junctional area as well as the other junctional elements and the intercellular space are labeled by pyroantimonate precipitates, which contain calcium as revealed by electron spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectrometry. X-irradiation, parallel with morphological changes, lead to rapid decrease of pyroantimonate precipitable calcium content and increase of the permeability of tight junctions indicated by the penetration of ruthenium red into the intercellular space. These changes were readily reversible following 0,5 …

The process that will lead to the complete clean-up of the facility is ongoing. The site was added to the National Priorities List (NPL) in October 1992. Exposure of humans to contaminants in soil and air is thought to have occurred near Petrochem. The source(s) of those contaminants in …

Non-Equilibrium Surface Diffusion Measurements In Systems With Interactions, M. C. Tringides, K. R. Roos, A. Jesina, J. Haas, P. Levenberg Apr 1993

Non-Equilibrium Surface Diffusion Measurements In Systems With Interactions, M. C. Tringides, K. R. Roos, A. Jesina, J. Haas, P. Levenberg

Scanning Microscopy

Diffusion in surface overlayers with adsorbate-adsorbate interactions is described in terms of coverage-dependent diffusion coefficients. The measured phenomenological Arrhenius parameters (activation energy and prefactor) depend on the initial configuration of the system. Since different experimental methods probe the system in different states, the measured diffusion coefficients depend on the method used. Experimental results demonstrating this dependence are presented for O/W(110) -p(2x1) + p(2x2) and Ag/Si(111) -√3 x √3 R30°. They were measured during the evolution of the system to attain a new equilibrium state of different symmetry. In addition, simulations on lattice gas models with interactions, modeling …

Electron Beam Induced Current Studies Of Defect Induced Conductivity Inversion, Z. J. Radzimski, A. Buczkowski, T. Q. Zhou, C. Dubé, G. A. Rozgonyi Apr 1993

Electron Beam Induced Current Studies Of Defect Induced Conductivity Inversion, Z. J. Radzimski, A. Buczkowski, T. Q. Zhou, C. Dubé, G. A. Rozgonyi

Scanning Microscopy

Defect induced inversion of conductivity type was studied both at the surface and at a network of interfacially confined misfit dislocations in heteroepitaxial Si(Ge) on Si structures. The inversion was achieved by controlled contamination with Au and Ni metallic impurities introduced by diffusion from backside evaporated layers. A theoretical explanation of the defect electrical activity and the inversion effect is presented, along with temperature dependent beam induced current observations.

Analysis Of Heavy Metals In Mouse Uterine Secretion By X-Ray Microanalysis, Zhengzhu Jin, B. Ove Nilsson Apr 1993

Analysis Of Heavy Metals In Mouse Uterine Secretion By X-Ray Microanalysis, Zhengzhu Jin, B. Ove Nilsson

Scanning Microscopy

A method for the detection of heavy metal ions in the uterine secretion of the mouse was tested. Mice received an intravenous injection of lead, and beads of an analytical grade resin, Chelex 100, were deposited in the uterine lumen to absorb heavy metals present in the secretion. X-ray microanalysis of the flushed beads showed that lead was present in a dose-related way in the uterine secretion of mice that had received 0.05, 0.1, or 0.15 mg lead per g body weight. Thus, the technique allows quantitative analysis of lead in the uterine secretion. The amount of lead present in …

Use Of Ultra-Thin Window Detectors For Biological Microanalysis, A. T. Marshall, A. Patak Mar 1993

Use Of Ultra-Thin Window Detectors For Biological Microanalysis, A. T. Marshall, A. Patak

Scanning Microscopy

Films and bulk samples of Nylon, gelatin, Makrofol, epoxy resin, aminoplastic resin and sodium acetate have been used as models of biological samples. It is shown that the use of ultrathin window (UTW) detectors in scanning transmission and scanning electron microsopes permits the quantitative analysis of light elements, yielding a total element analysis with hydrogen estimated by difference or "guesstimated".

Comparison with known concentrations or concentrations obtained by chemical analysis shows that X-ray microanalysis of sections by the peak to continuum ratio model and bulk samples by the φ(pz) model gives sufficiently accurate results for biological purposes. It …

Hyperplasia And Fluid Accumulation In Epithelial Cyst Formation And Growth, Andrew P. Evan, James A. Mcateer, Kenneth D. Gardner Jr. Mar 1993

Hyperplasia And Fluid Accumulation In Epithelial Cyst Formation And Growth, Andrew P. Evan, James A. Mcateer, Kenneth D. Gardner Jr.

Scanning Microscopy

Epithelial cysts may develop in virtually any epithelium. All cysts, regardless of their origins, are characterized by epithelial hyperplasia and fluid accumulation. Additional features may include tubular atrophy, basement membrane alterations and association with inflammatory cells. In spite of the intense research effort in recent years directed at uncovering the cellular mechanisms of cyst development and growth, we still do not know the primary events that lead to cyst formation. However, there are at least three candidate mechanisms. These include: 1) increased cell proliferation (epithelial hyperplasia) in the cyst wall, 2) net fluid accumulation in the cyst cavity and 3) …

Evaluation Of The Use Of Tannic Acid In Preparation Of The Rabbit Knee Meniscus For Scanning Electron Microscopy, Daniel Levanon, Haim Stein Mar 1993

Evaluation Of The Use Of Tannic Acid In Preparation Of The Rabbit Knee Meniscus For Scanning Electron Microscopy, Daniel Levanon, Haim Stein

Scanning Microscopy

The femoral faces of medial and lateral menisci of the rabbit knee were structurally reinforced with tannic acid and studied using the scanning electron microscope. Significant improvement in preservation of the meniscal surfaces, as compared to previous studies, was brought about by the structural reinforcement technique. Menisci, although detached from tibial plateaux, retained well their shape, dimensions, and microarchitecture. Differences in surface morphology between medial and lateral menisci and between longitudinal sectors on menisci were recorded. Appearances of surface irregularities were reduced to a very low level, and the possibility that this minimum exists in situ is forwarded.
