Telephone Crisis Intervention: Empathy And Conceptual Level, Paul J. Seymour May 1976

Telephone Crisis Intervention: Empathy And Conceptual Level, Paul J. Seymour

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The telephone crisis intervention service at Utah State University (Help-Line) was evaluated in order to make the training program accountable and to produce recommendations for improvement in volunteer training.

Help-Line training teaches a "non-directive" counseling model and incorporates experiential sensitivity type exercises, didactic discussion, and role playing.

Help-Line volunteers were assessed by two methods. The first was a pretest-posttest control group design. Training was the independent variable and the discrimination of core conditions (as measured by the Crisis Center Discrimination Index) and the communication of empathy (as measured by the Crisis Center Communication Index) were the dependent variables. The Indexes …

Some Aspects Of Winter Social Behavior In Dark-Eyed Juncos, Martha Hatch Balph May 1975

Some Aspects Of Winter Social Behavior In Dark-Eyed Juncos, Martha Hatch Balph

Biology

The purpose of this study was to examine some aspects of winter social behavior in Dark-eyed Juncos (Junco hyemalis) in an effort to understand the accommodation which members of a flock must make between the need to compete for limited resources and the need to mediate resultant aggression. The specific objectives of the investigation were: (1) to analyze the form and function of visual and auditory signals used by juncos in a social context; and (2) to determine quantitatively the relationship between agonistic behavior and each of several factors including season, time of day, sex, rank, degree of …

The Development Of Selected Vocalizations Of The Black-Capped Chickadee, Vivian Telford Anderson May 1975

The Development Of Selected Vocalizations Of The Black-Capped Chickadee, Vivian Telford Anderson

Biology

The development of the contact-flight, fright and chickadee-dee calls and song of 20 Black-capped Chickadees, Parus atricapillus, reared in various degrees of social and acoustic isolation was described. A previous study (Anderson, 1970) demonstrated that these vocalizations develop normally in captive-reared Black-capped Chickadees housed with conspecific adults. The present study demonstrated that the contact-flight and fright calls developed normally in birds reared in all forms of isolation. Only the rearing of birds permanently in acoustic isolation cabinets curtailed the development of chickadee-dee calls that fell within the range found in wild populations. Individuals not exposed to conspecific adults …

Are Pschological Principles Useful?(A Guid To The Study Of Human Learning), David R. Stone Nov 1969

Are Pschological Principles Useful?(A Guid To The Study Of Human Learning), David R. Stone

Faculty Honor Lectures

To some extent, each person is his own doctor, his own economist, his own historian, his own counselor, his own psychologist, and his own teacher.

It is said that a man who is his own lawyer has a fool for a client. Can the same be said of a man's other roles? At least for learning (which professionally intersects education and psychology) any person may have the goal of helping himself to appreciate and evaluate the role of the learning professional.

A knowledge explosion has taken place in the area of learning, as in the many fields of science in …

A Proposed Equipment Development Plan For Closed Circuit Television As It Relates To The Existing Curriculum At College Of Southern Utah, Don Lee Blanchard May 1968

A Proposed Equipment Development Plan For Closed Circuit Television As It Relates To The Existing Curriculum At College Of Southern Utah, Don Lee Blanchard

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A study of closed circuit television systems was made which could be utilized to supplement conventional teaching methods at College of Southern Utah.

A basic, but complete studio installation for production work and radio-television class room instruction in addition to four, individual, self-contained installations are recommended for regular classroom use. All equipment is to be compatible and provide for complete interchangeability of tapes within the system.

Present costs of distribution systems indicate that video tapes produced in the classroom, in the field, or in the studio and played back in the classroom would provide better utilization of available funds. It …

The Corporate Image Of Utah State University, Jon I. Anderson May 1968

The Corporate Image Of Utah State University, Jon I. Anderson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During the past four years it has been easy to see that there has been no art direction in the visual communications of Utah State University. Recently the university has become aware of the importance of a good public relations program and has taken steps in that direction. Very little thought has been given to the visual design of these public relations though. Advertising gives information, plants ideas, and provokes interest in a service and company, but it must be designed well to be noticed. Corporate image includes many things, but I shall only deal with the visual or graphic …

The Effects Of A Programed Text Of Contingency Management Procedures On The Ability Of Teachers To Write Behavioral Prescriptions, Lanny E. Morreau May 1968

The Effects Of A Programed Text Of Contingency Management Procedures On The Ability Of Teachers To Write Behavioral Prescriptions, Lanny E. Morreau

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

An informational source where teachers and teacher-candidates could gain a functional knowledge of contingency management techniques had not been developed. A programed text was written to provide this source. Five teachers and teacher-candidates were exposed to the text for a period of three days. As a result of this exposure, learning gains, significant at the 0.01 level, were found in the students' abilities (a) to write behavioral prescriptions and (b) to write the principles of contingency management when presented with open-ended questions pertaining to these principles.
