Reimagining The Rhetorical Canons For Professional Communication Pedagogy, Jocelin A. Gibson
Reimagining The Rhetorical Canons For Professional Communication Pedagogy, Jocelin A. Gibson
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
One of the most significant challenges for professional communication educators is identifying and providing the skills students need to succeed in their careers. The rapidly evolving professional landscape complicates this identification; the skills a college student needs when she enters the program could be dramatically different from what she needs when she graduates. A crucial change in the past decade is the shift from a largely solo composing environment to one featuring distributed work, in which professional communicators “find themselves becoming "dividuals" – one part writer, one part project manager, one part programmer, one part student”; this has them involved …

Representations Of Us Acts Of Extra-Territoriality As Illustrated In Pakistani-English Political Cartoons, Aina S. Niaz
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The significance of Pakistan as an international state cannot be downplayed. Not only is Pakistan the first Islamic state to develop its nuclear power, but Pakistan has served as an important geostrategic state to the US on several occasions. The US-Pakistan geopolitical relationship was most vividly highlighted during the final years of the Cold War; and has reemerged again in the Global War on Terror. This thesis will examine Pakistani-English political cartoons to examine the way US extra-territoriality is represented visually. Approximately 2940 political cartoons are collected from four Pakistani-English newspapers: Dawn, The Express Tribune, The Nation, …

A parent’s passing will always generate drama within a family, but when you add a family heirloom with a potential value in the millions of dollars, the stakes are quickly raised. Theresa Rebeck’s gripping, anxiety-producing play, Mauritius, introduces tension through a subject most theatre patrons are unlikely to suspect: philately, the study or collection of postage stamps.
A Visually Determined Deutschland: Visual Rhetoric Analysis Of German Culture, Taylor Halversen
A Visually Determined Deutschland: Visual Rhetoric Analysis Of German Culture, Taylor Halversen
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Within the field of Communication Studies, researchers attempt to define culture and often explain it as shared meanings and values among a group of people. Another subsection of Communication Studies includes the study of how images communicate: the field of visual rhetoric. This paper combines concepts from intercultural communication and visual rhetoric in order to better understand German culture. By examining two culturally significant eras of German artwork through the lens of visual rhetoric analysis, this study seeks to better understand German culture and its values. By analyzing the visual communication of historically significant photographs, one can find common meanings …

The purpose of this series of white papers is to report on the findings of an initial evaluation of Utah’s Care About Childcare program (CAC) using an implementation science framework. Care About Childcare is Utah’s version of the federal Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS) for child care providers, but unlike other states’ QRISs, Utah’s QRIS is a Quality Recognition and Information System. CAC was developed by the Utah Office of Child Care (OCC). It is a strengths-based, voluntary program in which providers identify and report the quality that they have achieved beyond the basic licensing requirements.
Effective Poster Design, Kaylee S. White
Effective Poster Design, Kaylee S. White
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
It is claimed that a poster has about three seconds to catch the attention of a passer-by. The success of that poster teeters on those few seconds. If it fails to attract attention, then it is ineffective. However, if it catches the interest of its viewer, then half of the battle is won. Having caught attention, the poster must next deliver a swift, effective, convincing message, which then leads the viewer to a desired thought or action. Quite an ambitious to-do list for one poster, right? Quickly arrest the attention of the viewer, deliver a swift clear message, effectively accomplish …

Technological Evolution And Its Effects On Graphic Design And Textbook Design, Danielle Renae Allen
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Technological Evolution and its Effects on Graphic Design and Textbook Design Although fundamental principles of art and design have been around for thousands of years, the development of new technology has greatly altered how designers must use these foundations. This paper investigates how this complex history has changed graphic design practices and specifically the design of textbooks. It also discusses technology’s huge role in changing the way design fundamentals are taught and practiced and how this affects where the profession is headed. Through researching the history of graphic design and then examining three editions of the textbook, Design Basics by …

Educational Policies Committee
This new interdisciplinary certificate program proposes to leverage the existing networks, resources, reputation and knowledge-base associated with the Utah State University (USU) Department of Art‟s Annual Summer Art and Design Program in Switzerland, into a consolidated “Design Thinking” learning experience. Principally, it invites undergraduate students from the Department of Art‟s graphic design emphasis to join with students from the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business to cross-fertilize the analytical and intuitive strengths of both disciplines. Also, because of the broad-based application and appeal of Design Thinking processes, all USU students (both undergraduate and graduate students) from all majors are invited …

Queering Gender: How Transgender College Student Navigate Gender, Rachel Jaggi
Queering Gender: How Transgender College Student Navigate Gender, Rachel Jaggi
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
In response to the “Doing Gender” theory as proposed by West and Zimmerman, some scholars have argued that the theory perpetuates gender inequality and leaves no room for social change. These scholars argue that research needs to be directed towards deconstructing the gender system, thereby “undoing gender.” Transgender individuals, who appear to be playing with the system of gender, provide an important conduit through which to examine the possibility of transcending the gender binary. I conducted semi-structured interviews and focus groups with transgender college students to examine the extent to which these individuals are able to overcome the dichotomous gender …
Applying Information Visualization To Computer Security Applications, Robert Bruce Whitaker
Applying Information Visualization To Computer Security Applications, Robert Bruce Whitaker
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This thesis presents two phases of research in applying visualization to network security challenges. The first phase included discovering the most useful and powerful features in existing computer security visualizations and incorporating them into the AdviseAid visualization platform, an existing software package. The incorporation of such a complete feature set required novel resolution of software engineering, human factors, and computer graphics issues. We also designed additional novel features, such as plugin interfaces, allowing for rapid prototyping and experimentation with novel visualization features and capabilities. The second phase of the research focused on the development of novel visualization techniques themselves. These …
Storytelling Through Brushstrokes: Minerva Teichert's Visualization Of The Mormon Pioneer Experience And Messages To Her Audience, Amy L. Williamson
Storytelling Through Brushstrokes: Minerva Teichert's Visualization Of The Mormon Pioneer Experience And Messages To Her Audience, Amy L. Williamson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
"We must paint the great Mormon story of our pioneers in mural decorations so that 'he who runs may read,'" remarked Minerva Teichert. When she created her pioneer panorama, Teichert attempted to do something different; whereas other Mormon artists had drawn on their personal pioneer experiences or sought inspiration from Church-approved publications regarding the trek, her visual inspiration came from the oral narratives she heard as a child. Because she used these narratives, Teichert portrayed the Mormon pioneer experience from a woman's perspective and voiced their experiences to male and non-Mormon audiences. Not only did Teichert offer a counterpoint to …
Has Technical Communication Arrived As A Profession, Kathy Pringle, Sean Williams
Has Technical Communication Arrived As A Profession, Kathy Pringle, Sean Williams
English Faculty Publications
This article examines the design and technology components of technical communication by investigating how practitioners imagine their work and the profession, specifically with respect to technology. In short, we wanted to interrogate the duality of “core design skills” and “technology skills” by asking practitioners to reflect both on the definition of technical communication and on the role technology plays in their work. We wanted to weigh claims that communication and rhetorical skills are important for success in the field against claims that knowledge of specific tools is likewise vitally important to success in the field. Technical communication historically has been …

Use Of Alarm/Alert Call Playback And Human Harassment To End Canada Goose Problems At An Ohio Business Park, Philip C. Whitford
Use Of Alarm/Alert Call Playback And Human Harassment To End Canada Goose Problems At An Ohio Business Park, Philip C. Whitford
Wildlife Damage Management Conference
Burgeoning resident Canada goose (Branta canadensis) populations have led to increased goose/human conflicts. Playback of recorded goose alarm/alert calls coupled with human harassment was used to attempt removal of resident geese from a 24.2 ha business park, Dayton, Ohio, 26 February-15 August 2002. Many geese present were reusing nest territories of previous years. Removal efforts began following territorial establishment. Call playback used 3 "Goosebuster" units (Bird-X Corp. Inc., 300 N. Elizabeth, Chicago IL 60607). Goose use of the property dropped from an estimated 1600-1800 goose hrs/day before testing to fewer than 150 goose hrs/day by week three and to 0 …

Multimedia In Communication Education: A Survey Of Communication Educators, Michelle Hales
Multimedia In Communication Education: A Survey Of Communication Educators, Michelle Hales
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This project was an attempt to determine if and how educators are adapting their curriculum to reflect changes in technology. The survey revealed that the respondents, for the most part, are incorporating multimedia technologies into their curriculum. Results also showed an interesting pattern to that integration. This pattern involved two concepts of multimedia: 1) multimedia as a new form of communication (HTML, CD-ROMs, etc.), and 2) multimedia as a tool to enhance traditional forms of communication (broadcast news, print journalism, etc.). It was found that educators considered multimedia applications to enhance traditional forms of communication (i.e. image creation software, desktop/non-linear …
Gregarious Behavior In Large Mammals: Modeling, Methodology, And Application, Thomas L. Morton
Gregarious Behavior In Large Mammals: Modeling, Methodology, And Application, Thomas L. Morton
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Gregarious behavior of ungulates was considered in four ways. The first concern was W. D. Hamilton's hypothesis that a simple movement rule could reduce predation risk and encourage grouping behavior. Simulations showed little effect of this nearest-neighbor rule on predation risk. Similar, more complicated rules reduced predation risk by up to two thirds.
The second focus was on the accuracy of ground observers in diagramming individual animal locations in small herds of elk. A remotely controlled airplane was used to photograph the herds from above. A substantial distance discrepancy was found between "true" and "observed" animal locations. This discrepancy increased …
Photo Manipulation And Its Effect On Future Credibility Of Documentary Photojournalism, Douglas M. Lind
Photo Manipulation And Its Effect On Future Credibility Of Documentary Photojournalism, Douglas M. Lind
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
With today's increased use of computers and computer technology in newspaper photo departments, digitally transmitted and managed images are quickly becoming standard practice. In one sense, this is a tremendous boon for the industry. On the other hand, the electronic age is potentially harmful to the documentary nature of photojournalism. Unlike advertising or fine art photography, documentary photojournalism is a record, a visual witness if you will, of actual events and happenings. People consider such photos as being a view of the facts.
With the new technology comes the ability to change those facts, to create a lie. Therein rests …
Morphological Three-Dimensional Analysis, C. Gratin, F. Meyer
Morphological Three-Dimensional Analysis, C. Gratin, F. Meyer
Scanning Microscopy
This paper presents the main results of our research on mathematical morphology for three-dimensional images. The first issue is to decide which grid must be used. The face-centred cubic grid and the centred cubic grid seem to be more suitable than the cubic grid in terms of possible rotations. For these two grids we derive the formulae for the basic Minkovski measures. Then we show through several examples that extension from 2D to 3D is straightforward for most transformations. The efficiency of direct 3D processing is illustrated by applications to filtering, overlapping particle separation and grey-scale image segmentation.
The Watershed Transformation Applied To Image Segmentation, Serge Beucher
The Watershed Transformation Applied To Image Segmentation, Serge Beucher
Scanning Microscopy
Image segmentation by mathematical morphology is a methodology based upon the notions of watershed and homotopy modification. This paper aims at introducing this methodology through various examples of segmentation in materials sciences, electron microscopy and scene analysis.
First, we defined our basic tool, the watershed transform. We showed that this transformation can be built by implementing a flooding process on a greytone image. This flooding process can be performed by using elementary morphological operations such as geodesic skeleton and reconstruction. Other algorithms are also briefly presented (arrows representation).
Then, the use of this transformation for image segmentation purposes is discussed. The …
Will Mammalian Pheromones Be Useful In Wildlife Damage Control?, Dietland Müller-Schwarze
Will Mammalian Pheromones Be Useful In Wildlife Damage Control?, Dietland Müller-Schwarze
Wildlife Damage Management Conference
Rodents, lagomorphs and cervids are the most important herbivorous mammals that cause economic damage in North America. Farmers, foresters, trappers and gardeners have since time immemorial used various concoctions to attract wild mammals or repel them from certain sites or crops. The chemical industry has often used food odors in their animal control products. Currently no pheromone is being used in wildlife damage control.
Synchronous Flocking In Dunlins (Calidris Alpina): The Chorus Girl Hypothesis, Wayne K. Potts
Synchronous Flocking In Dunlins (Calidris Alpina): The Chorus Girl Hypothesis, Wayne K. Potts
Biology
The Chorus Girl Hypothesis (CGH) is presented to explain the rapid transfer of information through a flock during synchronous maneuvers. The primary feature of the hypothesis is that flock members receive information concerning the maneuver in advance of the leading edge of the maneuver wave. This advance warning allows flock members to time their own execution of the maneuver to coincide with the arrival of the maneuver wave, essentially eliminating the relatively large time lags that would be associated with a neighbor-to-neighbor transfer of information. Predictions from the CGH and the alternative Quick Reaction Hypothesis are tested. Observations suggest 11 …

A Comparative Evaluation Of Listening Skills Of Hearing Impaired Preschool Children Treated By The Home Auditory Program, Utah Project Ski*Hi, 1972-75, Susan Gail Crant Carne
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Home Auditory Program of Project SKI*HI on the listening skills of its students during the years 1972-1975. The scores of two groups of children, as measured on the SKI*HI Listening Skills Scale were compared. The statistical evaluation indicated that: 1. Significant improvements in listening skills were demonstrated by one group of children during three to eleven months of treatment, and 2. The scores of this treated group were significantly superior to the non-treated group, despite a similarity in age and degree of hearing loss between the two groups. …
Portraits Of Logan, Leroy Lawson
Portraits Of Logan, Leroy Lawson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this thesis is to explain some of the historical and personal developments in the painting of portraits.
For this project, eleven models were selected all of whom showed a wide range of emotional types and were painted in oil on canvas. The subjects were placed in shallow space, and color was explored as an emotional element. The personal experiences were evaluated and ideas for future development were suggested.
