Some Assembly Required: How Scientific Explanations Are Constructed During Clinical Interviews, Bruce L. Sherin, Moshe Krakowski, Victor R. Lee

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

This article is concerned with commonsense science knowledge, the informally-gained knowledge of the natural world that students possess prior to formal instruction in a scientific discipline. Although commonsense science has been the focus of substantial study for more than two decades, there are still profound disagreements about its nature and origin, and its role in science learning. What is the reason that it has been so difficult to reach consensus? We believe that the problems run deep; there are difficulties both with how the field has framed questions and the way that it has gone about seeking answers. In order …

Environmental Toxins And Depression In An American Indian Community, Gayle Skawennio Morse, Glen Duncan, Carolyn Noonan, Eva Garroutte, Azara Santiago-Rivera, David O. Carpenter, Alice Tarbell

Journal of Indigenous Research

Abstract

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a public health problem affecting many minority communities. We examined relationships between PCBs and depression among 306 adults on the Akwesasne Reservation (68% females; 18-79 years) exposed to PCBs through industrial contamination. Blood was collected to measure total PCB levels, which also were categorized based on level of chlorination and dioxin-like structure. The Center for Epidemiology Studies of Depression (CES-D) scale scores increased as terciles of measured PCB blood level increased, though increases were not significant (p>0.05). While there are documented health effects of PCBs, these results, consistent with one previous study, demonstrate depression …

Making Sense Of Integer Arithmetic: The Effect Of Using Virtual Manipulatives On Students' Representational Fluency, J. Bolyard, Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham Jan 2012

Making Sense Of Integer Arithmetic: The Effect Of Using Virtual Manipulatives On Students' Representational Fluency, J. Bolyard, Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

This study investigated how the use of virtual manipulatives in integer instruction impacts student achievement for integer addition and subtraction. Of particular interest was the influence of using virtual manipulatives on students’ ability to create and translate among representations for integer computation. The research employed a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design. Ninety-nine sixth-grade students participated over a four-week period. Six classes were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups. Students increased in integer computation achievement and demonstrated facility with pictures and written representations. Students had more difficulty creating symbolic representations and making connections among this and other representational forms.

“First You Must Master Pain:” The Nature And Purpose Of Apprenticeship, David F. Lancy Jan 2012

“First You Must Master Pain:” The Nature And Purpose Of Apprenticeship, David F. Lancy

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The goal of this study is to distill from a large body of literature on children learning crafts, such as pottery and weaving, the characteristics of apprenticeship as a distinct phenomenon. Currently apprenticeship is considered indistinguishable from other, more informal, means of skill transmission. From the literature survey, eleven attributes are identified as belonging to the archetypal apprenticeship. The analysis then advances to consider the genesis or raison d’etre for the apprenticeship. The argument is advanced that the apprenticeship is designed to simultaneously train novices in specific craft or trade skills while socializing them to join the social and cultural …

The Impact Of A Secondary Market On A Consumer's Intention To Buy New Video Games, Nicole Forsgen-Velasquez Jan 2012

The Impact Of A Secondary Market On A Consumer's Intention To Buy New Video Games, Nicole Forsgen-Velasquez

Data Analytics & Information Systems Faculty Publications

The secondary market for video game purchases is a multi-billion dollar industry that some believe is unfair to video game developers. Using the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), we investigated user attitudes and subjective norms and their affect on a consumer’s intention to buy new video games. While TRA has been used to study purchase intentions of material goods and digital goods, our study extends this work to investigate video games, which have both a physical and digital component. Based on a survey of 118 undergraduate students, two of the hypothesized relationships are significant predictors of intention to purchase: previous …

Through The Eyes Of The Novice Teacher: Perceptions Of Mentoring Support, Sarah K. Clark, D. Byrnes Jan 2012

Through The Eyes Of The Novice Teacher: Perceptions Of Mentoring Support, Sarah K. Clark, D. Byrnes

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

This study examined the perceptions of elementary school beginning teachers (n = 136) across a Rocky Mountain state in the US regarding the mentoring support they received during their first year teaching. Beginning teachers were asked to report the types of mentoring support they received and to rate the helpfulness of this support on the Mentoring Support Survey. Individual item scores and scale scores are reported. An analysis of variance was then used to compare the scale scores of teachers with the administrator-facilitated mentoring supports of common planning time with their mentors and/or release time to observe other teachers. …

The Chore Curriculum, David F. Lancy Jan 2012

The Chore Curriculum, David F. Lancy

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The term “curriculum” in chore curriculum conveys the idea that there is a discernible regularity to the process whereby children attempt to learn, then master and finally, carry out their chores. While the academic or “core” curriculum (of Math, English, Science) found in schools is formal and imposed on students in a top–down process, the chore curriculum is informal and emerges in the interaction of children’s need to fit in and emulate those older, their developing cognitive and sensorimotor capacity, the division of labor within the family and the nature of the tasks (chores) themselves. The primary theme of this …

Why Anthropology Of Childhood? A Short History Of An Emerging Discipline, David F. Lancy Jan 2012

Why Anthropology Of Childhood? A Short History Of An Emerging Discipline, David F. Lancy

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The paper has four goals: to refute the claim that anthropologists have not studied childhood; to provide a cursory history of the field; to provide an organizational schema for reviewing the literature in the field and; to suggest a strategy for future scholarship in the anthropology of childhood.

Unmasking Children's Agency, David F. Lancy Jan 2012

Unmasking Children's Agency, David F. Lancy

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The goal of this paper is to identify (unmask) and critique the movement to promote children’s agency as a cornerstone of research, care, education and intervention with children. The article makes a case that this movement is harmful to a scientific approach to the study of childhood, distorts or ignores key understandings of the evolution of childhood and culture. The article demonstrates that the agency movement is ethnocentric, classist and hegemonic representing the dominance of contemporary bourgeoisie child-rearing. It imposes a single, privileged ethnotheory of childhood upon the diverse societies of the world with alternative ethnotheories and practices. Lastly, the …

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Cultural ecosystem services (ES) are consistently recognized but not yet adequately defined or integrated within the ES framework. A substantial body of models, methods, and data relevant to cultural services has been developed within the social and behavioral sciences before and outside of the ES approach. A selective review of work in landscape aesthetics, cultural heritage, outdoor recreation, and spiritual significance demonstrates opportunities for operationally defining cultural services in terms of socioecological models, consistent with the larger set of ES. Such models explicitly link ecological structures and functions with cultural values and benefits, facilitating communication between scientists and stakeholders and …

“I Just Wikipedia It”: Information Behavior Of First-Year Writing Students, Megan Whitney Olsen, A. R. Diekema Jan 2012

“I Just Wikipedia It”: Information Behavior Of First-Year Writing Students, Megan Whitney Olsen, A. R. Diekema

English Faculty Publications

First-year writing students are a very large, diverse, and ubiquitous information user group, as writing courses are typically required of all undergraduate students, regardless of major. While in their institution's writing program, students frequently must utilize research (information) in their writing assignments. While this formal, task-related information behavior is important for stakeholders in the fields of information science and the humanities to understand, little research has been done on this significant group of students. This study arrived at key exploratory findings by collecting data and context from first-year writing students through semi-structured interviews. The researchers found that students continue to …

The Frying Pan Or The Fire: Public Attitudes About Using Herbicides To Manage Invasive Weeds, Mariah Evans, Kimberly Rollins Jan 2012

The Frying Pan Or The Fire: Public Attitudes About Using Herbicides To Manage Invasive Weeds, Mariah Evans, Kimberly Rollins

Articles

How do we balance risks? This paper assesses hypotheses derived from instrumental rationality and risk society theories about the reasoning strategies that people will use to develop views supportive or oppositional to the use of herbicides to manage cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), an invasive weed. Cheatgrass is well-known in the population of the American West to increase wildfire risks substantially and to harm the environment in other ways. But are the cures worse than the disease? One demonstrably effective method of cheatgrass suppression is the use of herbicides, and the paper explores sources of support for and opposition to …

Suggestive Characters: Hypnotism And Subjectivity In Blanca De Los Ríos’S Las Hijas De Don Juan (1907), Ryan A. Davis Jan 2012

Suggestive Characters: Hypnotism And Subjectivity In Blanca De Los Ríos’S Las Hijas De Don Juan (1907), Ryan A. Davis

Decimonónica

In July of 1906, Blanco y negro published a brief story by Blanca de los Ríos entitled “Metempsicosis: De las ‘memorias’ del doctor Hipnos,” which dramatizes the ominous dangers of hypnotism.1 In the story, a medical student, driven by his obsession for Susana, pays a traveling hypnotizer to “infundir mi alma en [el] cuerpo [de Alberto de San Andrés],” Susana’s husband (“Metempsicosis” 51). His subsequent confession to Susana about his actions precipitates her death, which in turn causes the student to go insane. In the final lines of the story, Hipnos reflects on the tragic outcome and the perils …

Reinterpreting Hysteria Under Patriarchy In Emilia Pardo Bazán’S “La Novia Fiel” And “Error De Diagnóstico”, Jennifer Smith

Decimonónica

In the nineteenth century there was an explosion of medical discourses on the illness of hysteria, particularly in relation to women. While there were many theories on the origin and nature of the disease that were circulating throughout Spain in the nineteenth century, the prevailing theory was that the cause of hysteria was the female sexual reproductive organs and that only women suffered from the disease (Jagoe, “Sexo” 341- 43). In fact, some Spanish doctors, such as Baltasar de Viguera, considered by many to be Spain’s first gynecologist, continued to subscribe to ancient Greek conceptions of the disease as an …
