American Indian Hope: A Potential Protective Factor Against Suicidal Ideation, Victoria M. O'Keefe, Raymond P. Tucker, Laricka R. Wingate, Kathy A. Rasmussen

Journal of Indigenous Research

American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) suicide is a major public health concern. Although suicide statistics continue to be high, there is relatively little research investigating the factors associated with AI/AN suicidal behavior. A new approach to studying suicidal behavior is through using positive psychology concepts, such as hope and optimism. To our knowledge, this is the first research study to investigate the relationship between hope, optimism, and suicidal ideation amongst American Indian (AI) college students. Results of regression analyses statistics showed that hope was a significant negative predictor of suicidal ideation, but optimism was not. The results suggest that AI college …

We applied the event-related brain potential (ERP) technique to investigate the involvement of two neuromodulatory systems in learning and decision making: The locus coeruleus–norepinephrine system (NE system) and the mesencephalic dopamine system (DA system). We have previously presented evidence that the N2, a negative deflection in the ERP elicited by task-relevant events that begins approximately 200 ms after onset of the eliciting stimulus and that is sensitive to low-probability events, is a manifestation of cortex-wide noradrenergic modulation recruited to facilitate the processing of unexpected stimuli. Further, we hold that the impact of DA reinforcement learning signals on the anterior cingulate …

Site Planning Using Gis: University / Agency Service Learning Collaboration, Rob Porter Mar 2012

Site Planning Using Gis: University / Agency Service Learning Collaboration, Rob Porter

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

This case study presentation outlines an ongoing partnership between Western Illinois University and the Army Corps of Engineers Mark Twain Lake (ACOE) that allows students to integrate classroom knowledge into field-based work. While attending a series of classes students receive appropriate natural resource management curriculum, practice GIS skills through labs, and engage in the planning and implementation of an actual facility. First, the students visit the area, engaging in a tour giving them an overview of the area. Second, they create an open space plan for a recreation area that is devoid of facilities or underutilized. GIS is utilized in …

The Cliff, The Rope And The Safety Net: Teaching Through Service Learning, Marc J. Stern Mar 2012

The Cliff, The Rope And The Safety Net: Teaching Through Service Learning, Marc J. Stern

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

One strategy for a service-learning course is basically to push the students off of a cliff, dangle a rope, and hope they can not only find the rope, but also climb back up. This generally means getting students out there as quickly as possible, equipping them with some basic tools and knowledge to make sense of their experience along the way, and seeing if they can put it all together. A different strategy at the other end of the spectrum involves holding the students’ hands throughout the process – that is, being present when they are out in the real …

Factors Influencing Undergraduate Enrollment Trends In Natural Resources, Terry Sharik, Robert Lilieholm, William Richardson

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

Our 30-year record of undergraduate enrollment trends in natural resources shows pronounced cyclical swings over time, well beyond those for enrollments across all disciplines in four-year U.S. institutions of higher learning. Despite large increases in overall student enrollments, current natural resources enrollments are at about the same level as historic highs in the early 1980s and mid 1990s, and are increasingly dominated by broad degrees in natural resources. The reasons for these cycles are many and complex, and appear to be influenced by the political climate, unemployment rates, changing public values towards forests, a perceived lack of jobs and low …

Latinos constitute the largest ethnic minority group in the United States. However, the cultural adaptation and dissemination of evidence-based parenting interventions among Latino populations continues to be scarce despite extensive research that demonstrates the long-term positive effects of these interventions. The purpose of this article is threefold: (1) justify the importance of cultural adaptation research as a key strategy to disseminate efficacious interventions among Latinos, (2) describe the initial steps of a program of prevention research with Latino immigrants aimed at culturally adapting an evidence-based intervention informed by parent management training principles, and (3) discuss implications for advancing cultural adaptation …

A Preliminary Report On The Relationships Between Collective Self-Esteem, Historical Trauma, And Mental Health Among Alaska Native Peoples, Tina Marie Woods, Ruth Zuniga, E. J. R. David Mar 2012

A Preliminary Report On The Relationships Between Collective Self-Esteem, Historical Trauma, And Mental Health Among Alaska Native Peoples, Tina Marie Woods, Ruth Zuniga, E. J. R. David

Journal of Indigenous Research

Abstract

Alaska Native Peoples have experienced historical trauma and contemporary oppression, which may negatively affect their well-being. We present preliminary results from a project that investigated the relationships between historical trauma, cultural pride and connectedness, and mental health among Alaska Native Peoples, with the specific intention of exploring the potential benefits of cultural pride and connectedness in protecting and enhancing mental health. Using culturally-responsive and appropriate research protocol, the research team collected information from 66 Alaska Native participants. Preliminary findings suggest that individuals who have more thoughts about historical trauma and who experience more negative emotions related to historical trauma …

Bennis and Goldsmith (2003) argued that “immediate demands for leadership confront us daily. Our cities are in crisis, our communities face turmoil, our political, religious, and business leaders are repeatedly charged with ethical violations, and the world’s multiple demands require our immediate attention” (pp. xi-xii). With such critical needs in society today, leadership development has become an important area of inquiry within human resource development (HRD), and is now emerging as foundational to our field. According to Rosser (2007), leadership development is a unique aspect of HRD “because it is important to both scholars and practitioners and is a common …

Receiving the benefits of postsecondary education is important to nations throughout the world. A more educated citizenry results in, among other things, less crime and poverty, increased physical and mental health of individuals, and greater economic growth (e.g., American Human Development Project, 2009; Pascarella, & Terenzini, 2005). These benefits are felt at all levels of society (i.e., individual, community, and national) and essentially define the social and economic structure of a nation. According to a Lumina Foundation (2009) report “college-attainment rates are rising in almost every industrialized or postindustrial country in the world, except the U.S.” (p.1). The graduation rate …

14 Rainfall Prediction Using Teleconnection Patterns Through The Application Of Artificial Neural Networks, Gholam Abbas Fallah-Ghalhari

Modern Climatology

All aspects of human life are, directly or indirectly, affected by climatic processes. This effect is especially noticeable in such fields as agriculture, irrigation, economy, telecommunications, transportation, traffic, air pollution and military industries (Haltiner & Williams 1980). A number of researchers have studied the possibility of forecasting rainfall several months in advance using climate indices such as SOI, PDOI and NPI (e.g. Silverman and Dracup 2000). A well-known atmospheric phenomenon is the Southern Oscillation (SO). The SO is an atmospheric see-saw process in the tropical Pacific sea level pressure between the eastern and western hemispheres associated with the El Niño …
