Native Species Establishment On An Oil Drill Pad Site In The Uintah Mountains, Utah: Effects Of Introduced Grass Density And Fertilizer, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Habitat Ecology

This study examined the effects of introduced grass seeding density and fertilizer on native species establishment on an oil drill pad site in the Uintah Mountains, UT. Differences in first-year seedling density and 3-year standing crop biomass among treatments were evaluated for seeded introduced grasses and native species and for unseeded colonizers. Aerial cover was measured all 3 years and the effects of fertilization on soil NO3-N, available P, and exchangeable K were examined 2 years after application. Recommendations for reclamation of similar sites are given.

Body Size, Population Metabolism, And Habitat Specialization Among Large African Herbivores, Johan T. Du Toit, N. Owen-Smith Jan 1989

Body Size, Population Metabolism, And Habitat Specialization Among Large African Herbivores, Johan T. Du Toit, N. Owen-Smith

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Large species generally occur at lower population densities than small species but, being larger, use more energy per individual. The balance between population density and energy use per individual determines how evenly community resources are shared by species of different size. Analyses of large data sets, covering a wide range of body sizes, have found that population metabolism (the product of population density and energy use per individual) scales either neutrally (Damuth 1981, 1987) or negatively (Peters 1983) with body mass. However, different scaling relationships may occur in certain communities within specific biogeographic regions. Brown and Maurer (1986) found that …

Microstructure Of Extruded Mixtures Of Cereals And Oil Seed Processing Residues, A. Salgo, Sz. Torok, Sz. Sandor Jan 1989

Microstructure Of Extruded Mixtures Of Cereals And Oil Seed Processing Residues, A. Salgo, Sz. Torok, Sz. Sandor

Food Structure

The utilization of valuable by-products of seed processing residues as coextrusion materials was investigated. By mixing sunflower, pumpkin, corn or rice germ presscake with cereals (wheat, corn, rice), the good protein quality of the former group might improve the biological value of the resulting coextrudates. The microstructure of such coextruded products was analysed with reference to their chemical compositions, nutritional characteristics and functional properties. As seed processing residue was increased, the microstructure of the products became more compact and uniform and the air/solids ratio decreased considerable. The results showed that the highest acceptable concentration of the additive was not more …

Organisms known to cause bovine mastitis, Enterococcus faecalis ssp. liquefaciens ATCC 27959, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29740, Streptococcus agalactiae ATCC 27956, Streptococcus equinus ATCC 27960, Streptococcus dysgalactiae ATCC 27957, Streptococcus uberis ATCC 27958, and the neotype Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 14990 were examined for their susceptibility to die small peptide antibiotic, nisin. Using a disc assay, minimum inhibitory concentrations of nisin ranged from 10 to 250 μg/ml among the strains. Examination of die antimicrobial effect of 50 μg/ml nisin in milk showed nisin inhibited all gram-positive pathogens tested.

Fine Structure And Organ Culture Of Chick Embryo Dorsal Aorta, C. Ward Kischer, Michael Jaqua Dec 1988

Fine Structure And Organ Culture Of Chick Embryo Dorsal Aorta, C. Ward Kischer, Michael Jaqua

Scanning Microscopy

Embryonic blood vessels have not been grown in organ culture, in a way which might easily submit them to studies of vascular organogenesis. The chick embryo dorsal aorta is easily accessible and relatively simple to explant to culture. Its organ culture may provide a model for wounding and repair of the intima and/or media and provide a model for studies of growth (or maintenance) and differentiation. Fresh dorsal aorta and its organ culture from the chick embryo was characterized morphologically by light microscopy scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) from days 4 to 18. Explants were incubated up to …

Ultrastructural Characteristics Of The Fetal And Neonatal Rat Urinary Bladder, Samuel M. Cohen, Martin Cano, Takao Sakata, Sonny L. Johansson Aug 1988

Ultrastructural Characteristics Of The Fetal And Neonatal Rat Urinary Bladder, Samuel M. Cohen, Martin Cano, Takao Sakata, Sonny L. Johansson

Scanning Microscopy

The embryologic and neonatal development of the normal rat urinary bladder was investigated in Sprague-Dawley rats by light, transmission, and scanning electron microscopy from day 11 of gestation through 21 days of age. The epithelium at day 11 of gestation is composed of small, loosely-connected, rounded cells with occasional short microvilli on their surfaces. The large polygonal cells characteristic of the adult bladder begin to appear by day 15, but the microridges are not apparent until day 17. By day 20, the epithelium appears morphologically similar to the adult bladder. Several morphological features are observed at different times of gestation …

Studies Of Intestinal Lymphoid Tissue. Xi – The Immunopathology Of Cell-Mediated Reactions In Gluten Sensitivity And Other Enteropathies, Michael N. Marsh Jun 1988

Studies Of Intestinal Lymphoid Tissue. Xi – The Immunopathology Of Cell-Mediated Reactions In Gluten Sensitivity And Other Enteropathies, Michael N. Marsh

Scanning Microscopy

Computerised image-analysis was used to quantitate small intestinal mucosae from celiac sprue and dermatitis herpetiformis patients, Gambian children with tropical-sprue-like malabsorption, first-degree celiac sprue relatives, and treated celiac sprue patients during challenge with a peptic-tryptic digest of gluten. A wide range of mucosal appearances was observed. Typically, 'flat' lesions (Type 2) revealed a reduced number of epithelial lymphocytes that were large and mitotically active. At the other extreme, mucosal architecture was relatively well preserved (Type 1) but surface epithelium contained an expanded population of small, non-mitotic lymphocytes, with or without crypt hyperplasia. Similar changes were observed in one-third of celiac …

Preparation Of Cultured And Isolated Cells For X-Ray Microanalysis, K. Zierold, D. Schäfer May 1988

Preparation Of Cultured And Isolated Cells For X-Ray Microanalysis, K. Zierold, D. Schäfer

Scanning Microscopy

Various electron microscopical preparation techniques are compared with regard to the preservation of the intracellular element distribution as determined by X-ray microanalysis in scanning and scanning transmission electron microscopy. By use of chemical agents for fixation and dehydration ions are redistributed and washed out. This is also true for freeze-substitution. Whole cells are prepared by cryofixation followed by freeze-drying. Interference of intracellular measurements by extracellular elements can be avoided by appropriate washing the cells before cryofixation. The washing medium has to be carefully selected in order to avoid distortions of the original intracellular element content. These problems are circumvented by …

Effects Of Macrocyclic Trichothecene Mycotoxins On The Murine Immune System, Brian J. Hughes May 1988

Effects Of Macrocyclic Trichothecene Mycotoxins On The Murine Immune System, Brian J. Hughes

Biology

The macrocyclic trichothecenes are a unique group of toxins which have some antileukemic properties. In the first study, verrucarin A and roridin A were examined. Both mycotoxins were administered intraperitoneally at an equitoxic dose of 0.35 mg/kg to CD-1 mice. Lymphocyte proliferation was studied on days 2, 4, and 7 after animals were dosed with verrucarin A. After day 2, no differences in 3HThymidine (3H-TdR) incorporation were observed using concanavalin A (Con A), phytohaemagglutinin (PHA), pokeweed mitogen (PWM), or lipopolysaccharide (LPS). On day 4, DNA synthesis induced by Con A, PHA, and PWM increased significantly. On day …

Colonization Of Roots By Pseudomonas Putida And Its Role In Control Of Fusarium Wilt, Pouran Habibzadegah-Tari May 1988

Colonization Of Roots By Pseudomonas Putida And Its Role In Control Of Fusarium Wilt, Pouran Habibzadegah-Tari

Biology

Pseudomonas putida is a soil saprophyte that suppresses certain fungal root pathogens. The bacterium is an aggressive colonizer of plant root surfaces and the bacterial cells are agglutinated by a root surface glycoprotein, termed an agglutinin. To study the relationship between agglutination and root surface colonization, mutants of P. putida were derived which demonstrated enhanced or decreased agglutinability. In short-term binding studies, non-agglutinability. In short-term binding studies, non-agglutinable (Agg-) mutants obtained by ethyl-methanesulfonate mutagenesis adhered to sterile bean seedling roots at levels 10-15 fold less than parental cells. Tn5-Agg- mutants adhered at levels comparable to that of …

Maternal, Obstetric, And Neonatal Correlates Of Short-Term Neurodevelopmental Outcome In Newborn Infants With Intraventricular Hemorrhage, Richard Elghammer May 1988

Maternal, Obstetric, And Neonatal Correlates Of Short-Term Neurodevelopmental Outcome In Newborn Infants With Intraventricular Hemorrhage, Richard Elghammer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The attempt to identify risk factors or correlates of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) has been constrained by conflicting research findings, changing hypotheses about the etiology of IVH, and by the exceedingly complex nature of this neurological disorder. In addition, few studies have investigated the possibility that antenatal factors might predispose the infant to IVH. Thus, research aimed at identifying IVH correlates from all time periods in which stress could occur to the neonate needs to be undertaken. This study was conducted for the purpose of identifying and quantifying correlates of IVH by constructing an interactive statistical model to predict the occurrence, …

Inter-Seasonal Range Relationships Of Spanish Goats And Mule Deer In A Utah Oakbrush Community, Robert Alexander Riggs May 1988

Inter-Seasonal Range Relationships Of Spanish Goats And Mule Deer In A Utah Oakbrush Community, Robert Alexander Riggs

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Three experiments were conducted to assess the potential for using Spanish goats to manage Gambel oakbrush winter range, dominated by Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii), for mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus). Summer-time food selection of goats, effects on plant community composition, and consequent effects on mule deer nutrition and foraging behavior were examined.

An apparent preference for juvenile oak browse, and low use of oak twigs was observed. Selection for juvenile browse may have been facilitated by the retarded phenology of oak as compared to that of associated flora. This differential was maintained by repeated browsing. Animal performance, …

The Effects Of Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone And Milk Production On Pregnancy Rates In Repeat Breeder Dairy Cows, Laura Maureen Mitchell May 1988

The Effects Of Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone And Milk Production On Pregnancy Rates In Repeat Breeder Dairy Cows, Laura Maureen Mitchell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One hundred sixteen third- and fourth-service lactating dairy cows from five cooperating herds were used to compare the pregnancy rate of cows given Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone five minutes following insemination with pregnancy rate of control cows. In addition, milk production level, age at service and days in milk at time of service were used to compare pregnancy rates. Milk production level was expressed as relative value (percent of herd mature equivalent production). There were no differences between treated and untreated control cows in pregnancy rate. In addition, there were no differences between service number (3 or 4), relative value group, …

Messages To Homemakers As Consumers Regarding Food Preparation As Conveyed By Women's Magazines 1947-1986, Carmen Dobson Steggell May 1988

Messages To Homemakers As Consumers Regarding Food Preparation As Conveyed By Women's Magazines 1947-1986, Carmen Dobson Steggell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to define the messages related to food preparation that are conveyed by women's magazines to homemakers as consumers during the post-World War II period, and to analyze any changes of those messages over time. A content analysis of food related articles and advertisements in representative issues of Ladies' Home Journal and Good Housekeeping magazines from 1947 to 1986 was conducted. Both manifest and latent content were coded and agreement between the two measures was analyzed.

Of eighteen messages defined, five were found to account for 78.9 percent of the messages conveyed,. The five messages, …

Pastoral Development Strategies In The Sahel And East Africa: Can The Mistakes Be Corrected?, Ahmed Musa Haji Ahmed May 1988

Pastoral Development Strategies In The Sahel And East Africa: Can The Mistakes Be Corrected?, Ahmed Musa Haji Ahmed

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

There is much controversy on the definition given to those people who raise livestock on the natural vegetation. Differences in the degree of their dependence on livestock and livestock products for food, as well as differences in the patterns of their movements, create the controversy. "Pure-pastoralists", "nomadic pastoralists", "semi - pastoralists", "semi-nomadic", "transhumant", and "semisedentary" are but some of the many terms used in the literature to describe them (see, for example, Johnson, 1969; Jacobs, 1965; McGee, 1986; Horowitz, 1981). To avoid much of the confusion created by the use of these terms, we use the definition of pastoralists as …

Structure-Activity Relationships Of Retinoids In Developmental Toxicology, W. Brian Howard May 1988

Structure-Activity Relationships Of Retinoids In Developmental Toxicology, W. Brian Howard

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The teratogenic potency of retinoid analogs was determined in Syrian hamsters and compared to the teratogenic potency of all-trans-retinoic acid (all-trans-RA, ED50 = 10.5 mg/kg). A total of 15 analogs having variations in the cyclohexene ring were evaluated following various amounts of single oral doses on day 8 of gestation. Retinoids containing a five- or six-membered ring were as teratogenic as all-trans-RA, provided they had sufficient lipophilic substituents on the ring. The same pattern emerged for retinoids that had six-membered aromatic ring substitution for the natural cyclohexene ring of vitamin A. Incorporation of a supplementary …
