From 9-11 April, 1994, the Aquatic Ecology Laboratory Class (FW462) of Utah State University sampled the upper reaches of Lake Powell to assess if a trophic gradient existed. We °ampled physical and chemical parameters (temperature, oxygen, conductivity, and total phosphorus), phytoplankton chlorophyll a, littoral and pelagic zooplankton biomass and composition, littoral and profundal benthic invertebrates, and fish abundance measured in the littoral zone (gill nets) and the pelagic zone (hydroacoustics). Data was collected along the upper 50 miles of the reservoir between Bullfrog and the Hite marina near the Colorado River inflow.

Our field trip was done just prior to …

Physical And Functional Characteristics Of Cellclumping In Lactose-Positive Transconjugants Of Lactococcus Lactis Ssp. Lactis Ml3, H. Wang, Jeff Broadbent, J. K. Kondo

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Transconjugants of Lactococcus lactis ssp. lactis ML3 that acquire the ability to utilize lactose often exhibit self-aggregation and become able to transfer the ability to utilize lactose at frequencies 102 to 105 times higher than strain ML3. Our laboratory investigated the physical and functional characteristics of cell aggregation in ML3 transconjugants. Results showed that donor cell auto-aggregation was dissociated when cells were suspended in buffers that contained EDTA or when they were briefly exposed to proteinase K or α-chymotrypsin. Conjugation studies revealed that disruption of donor cell aggregation substantially decreased the efficiency of lactose plasmid transfer. Dissociation by EDTA or …

Rejex-It™Ag-36, A Potential Tool To Protect Seeds From Bird Depredation, Peter F. Vogt Oct 1993

Rejex-It™Ag-36, A Potential Tool To Protect Seeds From Bird Depredation, Peter F. Vogt

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

The ever increasing bird populations (e.g., Black birds, geese etc.) are known to cause considerable losses to agriculture. This problem has reached serious proportions for crops that are farmed on large tracts and are seeded by aerial application such as rice and canola. ReJeX-iT™AG-36, a non-toxic, biodegradable bird aversion formulation, derived from food grade ingredients, has been proven in pen tests and field trials to be effective as a seed treatment to prevent birds from eating the treated seeds. The product does not harm the seeds or the effected birds in any way, even if ingested; it just makes the …

Can We Landscape To Accommodate Deer? The Tracy Estate Research Garden, Helen H. Heinrich, Susan Predl Oct 1993

Can We Landscape To Accommodate Deer? The Tracy Estate Research Garden, Helen H. Heinrich, Susan Predl

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

The landscape of New Jersey is remarkably rich in vegetation and open space, despite the state's reputation as the nation's most populous state. This landscape is increasingly the product of intense interaction between the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and both native and cultivated vegetation, particularly in suburban communities, where both the whitetail and the vegetation coexist in abundance. Nearly extirpated at the tum of the century due to over-hunting, the state's white-tailed deer population today exceeds 140,000 because habitat is ideal and hunting seasons are carefully regulated. In many instances, where landowners choose not to use hunting as …

Balancing The Needs Of Society: Listening To The Public, Robert H. Schmidt Oct 1993

Balancing The Needs Of Society: Listening To The Public, Robert H. Schmidt

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

Wildlife damage management, as a professional activity, is involved in a broad range of management issues affecting agricultural productivity and profitability, human health and safety, and endangered and valued species management. Surveys by S. Kellert and others have indicated that the general public is agreeable to resolving wildlife damage issues, even utilizing lethal technologies. However, surveys and case histories have also indicated that the process involved in resolving wildlife damage issues invokes much public concern. By process I mean the specific methodologies, strategies, and resource and social tradeoffs involved in developing and implementing a wildlife damage management program.

Ascorbic Acid Is An Abettor In Calcium Urolithiasis: An Experimental Study, P. P. Singh, R. Kiran, A. K. Pendse, Reeta Ghosh, S. S. Surana

Scanning Microscopy

Two sets of animal experiments using guinea pigs were planned to evaluate the effect of ascorbic acid supplementation on the lithogenic process. In the first set of experiments, 10, 40, and 60 mg doses of ascorbic acid/100g body weight/day were given for 105 days. Neither of the ascorbic acid doses given induced crystalluria, calcification or stone formation, thereby confirming our previous findings that ascorbic acid in the doses used by clinicians does not cause urolith formation. In the second set of experiments, ascorbic acid was supplemented in hypercalciuric (induced by calcium carbonate feeding) and hyperoxaluric (induced by sodium oxalate feeding) …

The Syringomycins: Finding Their Role In Nature, Jon Takemoto May 1993

The Syringomycins: Finding Their Role In Nature, Jon Takemoto

Faculty Honor Lectures

About ten years ago, I began looking for a research problem in the field of plant-microbe interactions. As the name implies, this is the study of how plants and microorganisms associate-either for their mutual benefit or at the expense of one partner. An example is symbiotic nitrogen fixation between leguminous plants and root-colonizing bacteria. Both benefit-the plant gains nitrogen in a useful form and the bacteria gain nutrients and protection. A better understanding of a plant-microbe interaction system could be used to benefit agriculture. For example, boosting nitrogen fixation would mean less petroleum-derived nitrogen fertilizers. These interactive biological systems and …

Transformation And Gene Isolation By Functional Complementation In Cryphonectria Parasitica, The Chestnut Blight Fungus, Alice C. L. Churchill May 1993

Transformation And Gene Isolation By Functional Complementation In Cryphonectria Parasitica, The Chestnut Blight Fungus, Alice C. L. Churchill

Biology

An efficient DNA-mediated transformation system has been developed for the chestnut blight fungus Cryphonectria parasitica. Twelve vectors, each containing one of three dominant selectable antibiotic genes, were tested for their ability to confer resistance to either hygromycin B, benomyl, or G418 sulfate. Transformants were obtained with each vector screened, and in each case, transformation occurred by integration of the transforming DNA into the host genome. The cosmid vector pMOcosX conferred hygromycin B resistance to transformants at an efficiency of greater than 104 transformants/µg DNA and was utilized for the construction of a wild-type genomic DNA library. This library …

The Cache Valley Shoshones: Cultural Change, Subsistence, And Resistance, To 1870, John W. Heaton May 1993

The Cache Valley Shoshones: Cultural Change, Subsistence, And Resistance, To 1870, John W. Heaton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the xii Shoshones of Cache Valley evolved from scattered pedestrian hunter-gatherers to large, armed, mounted bands that hunted and gathered from the Great Basin to the Plains. Trade with European Americans helped initiate this evolution. However, Shoshones did not respond passively to the presence of European Americans. Shoshones actively sought change, and incorporated trade goods into their culture within a Shoshone context. They adapted to each wave of European Americans that they encountered. When Mormons dispossessed them of their land, Cache Valley Shoshones resisted by going on the offensive. Finally overwhelmed, the remnants of …

The Relationship Between Perceived Parenting Styles And Adolescent Locus Of Control And Self-Concept, Lisa Ann Mcclun May 1993

The Relationship Between Perceived Parenting Styles And Adolescent Locus Of Control And Self-Concept, Lisa Ann Mcclun

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Relationships between adolescents' perceptions of their parents' responsiveness and demandingness, adolescents' locus of control orientation, and adolescents' self-concept ratings were investigated. Subjects included 198 students from a middle school in northern Utah. Subjects were given the Nowicki-Strickland Internal-External Control Scale for Children, the Harter Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents, and the Perceived Parenting Style Survey.

Results indicated that subjects who perceived their parents as being authoritative had significantly (p < .001) more internal locus of control scores than subjects who reported either the permissive or authoritarian styles. Also, self-concept scores were significantly higher (p < .001) for the authoritative group than the authoritarian group on the Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents subscales of Scholastic Competence, Social Acceptance, Physical Appearance, Behavioral Conduct, Close Friendship, and Global Self Worth. The permissive group reported significantly lower scores (p < .05) on the subscales of Scholastic Competence and Behavioral Conduct. There was also a significant negative correlation (p < .001) between locus of control scores and the subscale scores on the Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents.

Although there were some limitations in the study methodology, the significant differences found between the groups indicated that the authoritative parenting style positively correlates with higher self-concept and …

Intraventricular Hemorrhage Sequelae In Low Birthweight Infants: A Meta-Analysis, Shannon G. Thompson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Technological advances in neonatal care have dramatically improved the survival and disability rates among low birthweight infants (LBW). One common factor associated with later problems among these babies is intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). A meta-analysis was conducted among LBW infants with and without IVH to determine developmental outcome. More than 450 studies were located. Only 125 studies met inclusion criteria.

Mean effect sizes were computed by comparing the LBW group to either a fullterm control group or to test norms. When compared to fullterm children, LBW children scored worse in all areas except gross motor skills.

Cognitive assessment was done commonly …

Sensory And Functional Properties Of Wheat Stored Under Home Conditions, Marilyn M. Shumway May 1993

Sensory And Functional Properties Of Wheat Stored Under Home Conditions, Marilyn M. Shumway

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Samples of wheat that had been stored in homes up to 48 years were collected with information about age and storage conditions. Germination, weight per bushel, protein, moisture, grade, and aroma were investigated. Volumes of gluten balls and bread made from ground whole wheat samples were measured. Sensory attributes of bread were evaluated by Quantitative Descriptive Analysis (QDA) for eight flavor and seven texture characteristics. Because of the tremendous variation in samples, generalizations on cause and effect are difficult to make. No one criterion was a perfect indicator of quality. A high percentage of germination was one of the better …

Effect Of Salinity (Nacl) On Germination, Growth, Ion Accumulation, And Protein Synthesis In Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa L.), Thamir S. Al-Niemi May 1993

Urinary Calculi: Review Of Classification Methods And Correlations With Etiology, M. Daudon, C. A. Bader, P. Jungers, O. Beaugendre, M. P. Hoarau Feb 1993

Urinary Calculi: Review Of Classification Methods And Correlations With Etiology, M. Daudon, C. A. Bader, P. Jungers, O. Beaugendre, M. P. Hoarau

Scanning Microscopy

Current physical and chemical methods available for urinary stones analysis are critically reviewed. No one method is sufficient to provide all the clinically useful information on the structure and composition of the stones. We show that a combination of refined morphological and structural examination of stone with optical microscopy, complemented by compositional analysis using infrared spectroscopy of the core, cross-section and surface of calculi, provides a precise and reliable method for identifying the structure and crystalline composition, and permits quantification of stone components while being highly cost effective. Using such morphoconstitutional studies leads to a classification of urinary stones in …

Preparation Of Dinosaur Fossils For Scanning Electron Microscopic Evaluation Of Bone Histology, C. Barreto, R. M. Albrecht Feb 1993

Preparation Of Dinosaur Fossils For Scanning Electron Microscopic Evaluation Of Bone Histology, C. Barreto, R. M. Albrecht

Scanning Microscopy

The quality of preservation is a major determinant of the amount and kind of information to be derived from a paleontological specimen. Various fossilization regimes may produce specimens that contain biological information on a microscopic level. Light microscopic inspection of adolescent fossil dinosaur bones from the Two Medicine Formation (northwestern Montana) revealed that precise preservation of tissue may occur at a cellular level. In the following report, we test and compare techniques of specimen preparation for examination by scanning electron microscopy and illustrate an example of faithful preservation of dinosaur bone histology.

Fungiform Papillae Of The Pig And The Wild Boar Analyzed By Scanning Electron Microscopy, C. A. Chamorro, P. De Paz, J. G. Fernández, L. Anel

Scanning Microscopy

Fungiform papillae of wild boar and pig were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Four regions were defined on the tongue: rostral, medial and caudal thirds and lateral sides. Morphologically the fungiform papillae correspond with their denomination. Rostral and lateral tongue regions presented the largest average number of fungiform papillae. Taste pores opened onto the upper surface of the papillae and were easily identifiable by SEM. The total number of fungiform taste pores from both animals was the highest reported in the literature. The lateral papillae of wild boar and pig contained the largest average number of pores per papilla. …
