A Culturally Situated Embodied Activity For Professional Development And Workshop Feedback, Jessi Lajos
Empowering Teaching Excellence Conference
In conjunction with the USU STEAM EXPO, USU Math and Stats faculty, graduate students, collaborators, and teachers in rural Utah districts came together for a cultural-exchange event. In collaboration with Jessica Benally (UC Berkeley) and Sindura Kularajan (USU), we facilitated a two day workshop for educators as part of this event. The purpose of the workshop was to address the need for teacher supports in rural districts of Utah (Bundock, 2023), respond to Coles et al. (2024) calls to make "gestures" towards socio-ecological practices in mathematics education, and promote epistemic pluralism-multiple ways of knowing and doing mathematics. The professional development …

Urban areas in Utah have suffered from poor air quality since Euro-American settlement in 1847. Because today’s harmful air pollutants and carbon dioxide—the most significant driver of contemporary climate change—are often emitted together, a carbon tax could improve air quality while also mitigating climate change. Here, we explore how Sweden has successfully implemented a carbon tax and consider the viability of a similar approach for Utah. While a carbon tax would pressure Utah’s transportation and energy sectors to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, revenue from the tax could finance renewable energy infrastructure to support companies transitioning away from fossil fuels …

Evaluating the impact of weight exerted by settled snow (i.e., snow load) on structures poses numerous statistical challenges, including missing data, biased distribution parameters, and the influence of climate change. This dissertation aims to address challenges related to the use both direct and indirect measurements of snow load (or equivalently, snow water equivalent), as well as the anticipated impact of climate change on future extreme snow loads. The first paper within this dissertation investigates short-term snow loads by comparing various techniques for estimating extreme values of short-term snow accumulations. Additionally, the first paper includes a comparative analysis of short-term and …

The growing research on narrative interventions is promising but has gaps regarding cultural/linguistic diversity and outcomes beyond language. We evaluated whether a structured, oral narrative intervention affects narrative language, problem behaviors, and self-concept in a diverse group of children with developmental language disorder. A 10-session intervention was implemented within routine care. Baseline and follow-up data included: (a) Narrative recordings—coded by therapists using the CUBED Narrative Language Measure, (b) Child Behavior Checklist—a parent-reported behavioral assessment, and (c) the Piers-Harris Children’s Self-Concept Scale. Among the sample’s n = 33 children, aged 6-16, 55.6% were bilingual. Post intervention, participants’ narrative language scores improved …

Serious flooding can happen when rain falls on snow, which we call a rain-on-snow (ROS) event. Increasing our understanding of the behavior of floods resulting from ROS events can help us design better systems to manage flood water and prevent it from causing damage. This thesis explores how ROS events affect streamflow in the Western United States by examining the weather conditions that precede a streamflow surge. We classify stream surges as ROS or non-ROS induced based on these weather conditions, which helps us separate floods caused by ROS events from those caused by other factors. By comparing these different …
Dynamic Optimization With Timing Risk, Erin Cottle Hunt, Frank N. Caliendo
Dynamic Optimization With Timing Risk, Erin Cottle Hunt, Frank N. Caliendo
Economics and Finance Faculty Publications
Timing risk refers to a situation in which the timing of an economically important event is unknown (risky) from the perspective of an economic decision maker. While this special class of dynamic stochastic control problems has many applications in economics, the methods used to solve them are not easily accessible within a single, comprehensive survey. We provide a survey of dynamic optimization methods under comprehensive assumptions about the nature of timing risk. We also relax the assumption of full information and summarize optimization with limited information, ambiguity, imperfect hedging, and dynamic inconsistency. Our goal is to provide a concise user …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
In the field of composite materials, many reports have shown that catastrophic structural damage is caused by lightning strikes. In this study, new design concepts were proposed for the lightning-strike protection of nickel-coated glass/epoxy foam-core composites. Instead of using a neat metal mesh, glass fibers were modified with nickel particles via a plating technique to improve their thermal and electrical conductivities. In addition, a thin Invar plate was inserted at the middle of the structure and a foam core was introduced to reduce damage to the structure. Three models with different materials and stacking sequences were used in this study. …

We examine deformed crystalline bedrock in the upper parts of the active San Andreas and ancient San Gabriel Faults, southern California, to 1) determine the nature and origin of micro-scale composition and geochemistry of fault-related rocks, 2) constrain the extent of fluid-rock interactions, and 3) determine the interactions between alteration, mineralization, and deformation. We used drill cores from a 470 m long inclined borehole through the steep-dipping San Gabriel Fault and from seven inclined northeast-plunging boreholes across the San Andreas Fault zone to 150 m deep to show that narrow fault cores 10 cm to 5 m wide lie within …

Malivhu: A Comprehensive Bioinformatics Resource For Filtering Sars And Mers Virus Proteins By Their Classification, Family And Species, And Prediction Of Their Interactions Against Human Proteins, David Guevara-Barrientos, Rakesh Kaundal
Computer Science Student Research
COVID 19 pandemic is still ongoing, having taken more than 6 million human lives with it, and it seems that the world will have to learn how to live with the virus around. In consequence, there is a need to develop different treatments against it, not only with vaccines, but also new medicines. To do this, human-virus protein-protein interactions (PPIs) play a key part in drug-target discovery, but finding them experimentally can be either costly or sometimes unreliable. Therefore, computational methods arose as a powerful alternative to predict these interactions, reducing costs and helping researchers confirm only certain interactions instead …

Assimilating Satellite-Derived Snow Cover And Albedo Data To Improve 3-D Weather And Photochemical Models, Colleen Jones, Huy Tran, Trang Tran, Seth Lyman
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications
During wintertime temperature inversion episodes, ozone in the Uinta Basin sometimes exceeds the standard of 70 ppb set by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Since ozone formation depends on sunlight, and less sunlight is available during winter, wintertime ozone can only form if snow cover and albedo are high. Researchers have encountered difficulties replicating high albedo values in 3-D weather and photochemical transport model simulations for winter episodes. In this study, a process to assimilate MODIS satellite data into WRF and CAMx models was developed, streamlined, and tested to demonstrate the impacts of data assimilation on the models’ performance. Improvements …

Balancing Results From Ai-Based Geostatistics Versus Fuzzy Inference By Game Theory Bargaining To Improve A Groundwater Monitoring Network, Masoumeh Hashemi, Richard C. Peralta, Matt Yost
Plants, Soils and Climate Student Research
An artificial intelligence-based geostatistical optimization algorithm was developed to upgrade a test Iranian aquifer's existing groundwater monitoring network. For that aquifer, a preliminary study revealed that a Multi-Layer Perceptron Artificial Neural Network (MLP-ANN) more accurately determined temporally average water table elevations than geostatistical kriging, spline, and inverse distance weighting. Because kriging is usually used in that area for water table estimation, the developed algorithm used MLP-ANN to guide kriging, and Genetic Algorithm (GA) to determine locations for new monitoring well location(s). For possible annual fiscal budgets allowing 1-12 new wells, 12 sets of optimal new well locations are reported. Each …

Starling Formation-Flying Optical Experiment: Initial Operations And Flight Results, Justin Kruger, Simone D'Amico, Soon S. Hwang
Small Satellite Conference
This paper presents initial flight results for distributed optical angles-only navigation of a swarm of small spacecraft, conducted during the Starling Formation-Flying Optical Experiment (StarFOX). StarFOX is a core payload of the NASA Starling mission, which consists of four CubeSats launched in 2023. Angles-only methods apply inter-satellite bearing angles obtained by on-board cameras for navigation, increasing satellite autonomy and enabling new mission concepts. Nevertheless, prior flight demonstrations have only featured one observer and target and have relied upon a-priori target orbit knowledge for initialization, translational maneuvers to resolve target range, and external absolute orbit updates to maintain convergence. StarFOX overcomes …

Estimation And Control Of Dynamic Mass-Moment Parameters For Spacecraft Attitude Simulator, Oleksii Padun, Ye Lu
Small Satellite Conference
Spacecraft attitude testbed has been a popular platform for the development, testing, and validation of real-time attitude determination, estimation, and control, algorithms. The focus of this paper is the development of a dynamic mass moment estimation algorithm and an automatic mass balancing control system with numerical validations. Two estimation layers are implemented: one for attitude estimation and another for mass-moment parameter estimation. Attitude estimation follows the existing literature of quaternion estimators with a nonlinear Kalman filter. Dynamic mass-moment parameter estimation is formulated as batch estimation with a nonlinear filter. The initialization process of the EKF parameter estimator is enhanced by …

This paper introduces the Open-source Python Tool for Awareness of Spacecraft and Analysis of Telemetry, or OPTASAT, software for spacecraft mission operations and planning. OPTASAT is modular and extensible, and incorporates multiple tools to contextualize spacecraft data. The increasing access to space is also growing the pool of spacecraft operators. There is a need for spacecraft operations tools that are open source and accessible. The best tools for modeling and understanding the situation of a satellite in space currently have high barriers to entry including cost, learning curves, and complex interfaces. Missions that cost over $100M and last for years …

A Low-Cost, Hardware-In-The-Loop Simulator Facilitating Cubesat Star Tracker Development, Hongrui Zhao, Adrian Zhuang, Michael F. Lembeck
Small Satellite Conference
CubeSats are increasingly used to support complex missions requiring accurate attitude knowledge and pointing control. To meet these requirements, miniature star trackers are being manifested with CubeSat attitude control systems. Accurate performance verification of these trackers can be facilitated using a low-cost, hardware-in-the-loop simulator. The simulator covered in this paper incorporates a high-resolution monitor and a collimating lens to project a simulated star field for the star tracker under test. Based on a systematic accuracy analysis, this simulator is shown to be precise enough to allow for successful star identification and attitude determination in a closed loop test. An empirical …

Low-Cost Hold-Down And Release Mechanism For Small Satellite Deployable Solar Wings, Alexandre Florio
Small Satellite Conference
Deployable structures increase mission capabilities and this applies particularly to microspace missions which are subjected to tight volume constraints. Nonetheless, these deployable structures come at an increase in risk and financial costs. In fact, problems associated to deployable solar wings are one of the main contributors to early mission failure. This paper presents the development of a reliable low-cost hold-down and release mechanism for a two-segment small satellite solar wing. This mechanism was valuable in the effort of bringing the overall solar wing cost down by 30% to 60% in comparison to what is commercially available. Its main components are …
Bootstrap Methods For Bias-Correcting Probability Distribution Parameters Characterizing Extreme Snow Accumulations, Kenneth Pomeyie, Brennan Bean
Bootstrap Methods For Bias-Correcting Probability Distribution Parameters Characterizing Extreme Snow Accumulations, Kenneth Pomeyie, Brennan Bean
Mathematics and Statistics Student Research and Class Projects
Accurately quantifying the threat of collapse due to the weight of settled snow on the roof of a structure is crucial for ensuring structural safety. This quantification relies upon direct measurements of the snow water equivalent (SWE) of settled snow, though most weather stations in the United States only measure snow depth. The absence of direct load measurements necessitates the use of modeled estimates of SWE, which often results in the underestimation of the scale/variance parameter of the distribution of annual maximum SWE. This paper introduces a novel bias correction method that employs a bootstrap technique with regression-based models to …

Very Low Swap-C Robotics Using Autodynamic Flexible Circuits, Jerome K. Fuller, Todd F. Sheerin
Small Satellite Conference
Spacecraft robotic appendages typically reflect terrestrial robots in that they are usually based on boom-and-joint designs. Here we present a radical departure from tradition in the form of an Autodynamic Flexible Circuit (AFC). While their more static flexible (flex) circuit progenitors have been used in space for decades, they are usually fixed, or are moved only by external forces. Here, a specific lacing of shape memory alloy actuator wire endows an otherwise-ordinary flex circuit with dexterous motion, to be positioned on command. AFCs have thus far been demonstrated in the laboratory and in space at < 1U and 6U CubeSat scales, stowing flat in a practically two-dimensional configuration. Selected applications envisioned include orbital debris mitigation, in-space servicing, assembly, and manufacturing, extraterrestrial exploration systems, individual payload and spacecraft subsystem pointing, and large area, reconfigurable deployables. As such, AFCs promise a new era in low size, weight, power, and cost space robotics and space systems by enabling circuits to function both as conduits for electricity and a means of articulating large area, low mass structures.

Autonomous Multi-Mission Orchestration For Small Satellite Constellations, Skylar Cox, Thomas Kost, David Fish, Jonathan Maier
Small Satellite Conference
The accelerating proliferation of space vehicles in LEO presents a significant operational and security challenge in coordinating operations between vehicles and across constellations. The growing operational complexity demands a reliable automation approach capable of orchestrating multiple agents, potentially across different domains. No longer is it sufficient to automate a single vehicle in isolation since many of the tasks being conducted by these constellations require cross-schedule coordination. To address the current operational demands and limitations, the Multi-Mission Orchestrator, or MMO, provides a methodology and framework for coordinating space vehicle operations and secure data transfers across heterogeneous constellations and even multi-domain systems …

The first Delta launch vehicle to launch multiple secondary payloads was Δ-104. Carried, as the 2nd piggyback payload on that mission was an amateur radio Smallsat, AMSAT-OSCAR-7 (AO-7). The launch, on 15 November 1974, was to a 1460 km SSO. This spacecraft, as its name suggests, was the 7th in an on-going series of spacecraft operating in the Amateur Satellite Service. The amazing story associated with the mission of this small satellite is being reported elsewhere in these proceedings. While the particulars of this satellite's lifetime are exciting, we didn't particularly expect this "old bird's set of tricks …

Development Of A Methodology For Optimizing Satellite Durability By Coupling Advanced Orbit Propagation With High Fidelity 3d Thermal-Electrical Simulation, Corey D. Packard, Logan R. Canull, Zachary J. Edel, Timofey Golubev, Michael L. Larsen, Nate Mccoun
Small Satellite Conference
In the rapidly evolving landscape of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology, this study presents a pioneering approach for analyzing satellite durability through advanced orbit propagation and high fidelity 3D thermal-electric simulation. Small satellites, packed with high power components and rapidly transitioning between sunlit and eclipsed orbit segments, often feature limited thermal control systems that make thermal management a challenging (but critical) task. Additionally, the durability of battery cells and photovoltaic (PV) panels over the mission lifetime of small satellites is an important concern. Cycling and calendar fade take their toll on battery lifetime, and PV degradation reduces operational efficiency …

The Great Salt Lake entered the zeitgeist of environmental concern in 2022 when a coalition of scientists and activists warned in a highly publicized report that the lake might be just five years away from complete desiccation, a possibility one state official warned was tantamount to an “environmental nuclear bomb”. Shortly thereafter, an unpredicted and unprecedented pluvial winter resulted in an increase in inflow, temporarily halting the lake’s decline and prompting Utah’s governor to mock the dire prediction as “a joke”, an outcome that speaks to the tension between agenda-setting and trust-building that researchers face when sharing worst-case warnings, particularly …

Planet is a leading provider of global, daily satellite imagery and geospatial solutions. Planet's mission is to image the world every day and make change visible, accessible, and actionable. To enable this mission, Planet operates the world's largest constellation of Earth Observation satellites (about 180 Doves and 20 Skysats) in the LEO environment of 400-550 km. However, this latitude regime became a challenging environment as we approached the solar maximum of the 25th solar cycle. The solar cycle describes an 11-year rotation period of the Sun's magnetic poles, which is characterized by several activities like solar flares and coronal mass …

Forest site productivity estimates are crucial for making informed forest resource management decisions. These estimates are valuable both for the tree species currently growing in the stands and for those being considered for future stands. Current models are generally designed for pure stands and do not account for the influence of climate on tree growth. Consequently, site index (SI) conversion equations were developed specifically for jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) trees grown in naturally originated mixed stands. This work involved sampling 186 trees (93 of each species) from 31 even-aged mixed stands (3 …

This study aims to undertake the development of the SPIRONE Cube-satellite. The technical mission involves the development and validation of an S-band navigation signal generator for Low Earth Orbit (LEO), and the scientific mission is to observe marine plastics using Long-Wave Infrared (LWIR) and Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) cameras. Traditional satellite navigation systems operate at medium Earth orbits around 20,000 km, where signals can weaken and become vulnerable to interference, impacting air navigation, shipping, and autonomous vehicles, potentially causing severe accidents. To address this, the project aims to explore LEO-based navigation by operating CubeSats in LEO to collect experimental data and …

Recent advances in hardware and software technology have made it possible to implement more resource-demanding deep learning algorithms in lighter hardware environments. This creates opportunities to use deep learning for space applications on increasingly lighter and smaller spacecraft. The goal of this work is to demonstrate the viability of implementing a Neural Network Execution Framework (NNEF) that can facilitate a cross-platform and unified deployment of any neural network onboard a spacecraft hardware and flight software. The NNEF generalizes the neural network inference process, regardless of the original framework in which they were created. This allows users to focus on the …
