On The Multi-Modal Psychological Experience Of Competence In Youth Sport, Liam O'Neil May 2025

On The Multi-Modal Psychological Experience Of Competence In Youth Sport, Liam O'Neil

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Over the past half century, beliefs about athleticism (i.e., sport competence) have been thought of as central to motivation for youth sport. In this time, however, these competence beliefs have been narrowly studied which has limited their value in explaining youth sport participation. To expand our understanding of competence beliefs and their motivational significance in youth sport, the three studies of this dissertation tested a longstanding but understudied idea that competence beliefs encompass both judgments of, and emotions about, competence. In Study One, existing research on judgments of competence in youth sport was reviewed. This study showed that many personal …

Learning Outdoors: A Pilot Program For Early Childhood Educator Professional Development, Cari Lee Gongora May 2025

Learning Outdoors: A Pilot Program For Early Childhood Educator Professional Development, Cari Lee Gongora

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Research supports the use of outdoor spaces as a learning environment for child development; however, some early childhood educators may struggle to support learning when outdoors with young children. Reframing teacher mindset towards outdoor environments, gaining a knowledge of child development, and understanding how it applies within the context of naturalist studies have been identified as three key areas supportive for early childhood educators as they work outdoors with young children. Additionally, designing professional development sessions with targeted material, opportunities for observations, and providing time with a coach for support may further support learning and implementation of targeted material.

The Impact Of Visually Presented Distractor Taboo Words During A Bilateral Attention Task, Chloe Taylor May 2025

The Impact Of Visually Presented Distractor Taboo Words During A Bilateral Attention Task, Chloe Taylor

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Attention is a limited resource. Some events are able to capture one’s attention more efficiently than others, such as swear or sexual words. These events have preferential access to attentional resources and increase our arousal levels due to the activity of a neurotransmitter called norepinephrine. We investigate how well swear/sexual words capture peoples’ attention and interpret these effects in terms of norepinephrine activity.

Participants performed a visual task where they responded to different shapes presented while ignoring neutral or swear/sexual words presented on opposing sides of the computer screen.

Participants were significantly more inaccurate in identifying the shape present when …

Domestic Challenges, Cultural Factors Driving Ecuador's Authoritarianism Acceleration, Benjamin F. Berlin May 2025

Domestic Challenges, Cultural Factors Driving Ecuador's Authoritarianism Acceleration, Benjamin F. Berlin

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Using the Cultural Topography (CTops) methodology, this paper provides insight to US policymakers into the cultural factors, combined with current domestic challenges, that are driving Ecuadorians toward authoritarianism. The CTops methodology requires practitioners to conduct primary research on a specific group, which is the population of Ecuador in this paper. To conduct this research, cultural texts and artifacts such as newspaper articles, monuments honoring national heroes, websites and blog posts, and many others were analyzed. Secondary research and an evaluation of current operational realities were also used to inform this paper. Once considered an “Island of Peace,” Ecuador is in …

Color Expressions In Euripides’ Ion, Erik Shelley May 2025

Color Expressions In Euripides’ Ion, Erik Shelley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

This analysis explores color expressions in the play Ion by the ancient Greek playwright Euripides. Because the ancient Greeks experienced color differently, I examined words used in the play, including light, dark, fire, green, water, blood, and gold. These expressions imply different themes and concepts that Euripides uses to portray the duality between his two main characters, Ion and Creusa. This thesis showed how the mother-son pair acts as a foil for the different aspects of color found throughout the play that reflect ancient Greek culture.

Translating Political Cartoons: The Fight For Peace In Central America, Eden Ward

Student Research Symposium

In 1987, the Esquipulas II treaty was established by Costa Rican President Oscar Arias. Political cartoonists celebrated the peace it was trying to establish in a variety of different fashions. An olive branch, a suitcase, a white dove and a bag of teddy bears all represent peace in these cartoons.

Audiovisual Translation Bridges Cultural Gaps, Annalee Thompson Apr 2025

Audiovisual Translation Bridges Cultural Gaps, Annalee Thompson

Student Research Symposium

Audiovisual translation includes dubbing, subtitling, surtitling, and voiceover of media. Each variation has different implications and considerations considered in the translation.

• Subtitling/Surtitling requires condensing of dialog and descriptive messaging to fit in the space. Translators may choose to adapt the message to the target audience or not.

• Dubbing/Voiceover requires creative solutions to match up the translation with the exact timing of the original gestures and body language. More domestication of the message is required to make the media flow for the target audience in the same way it flows for the original audience.

Grapholinguistics In Graphic Design, Cameron Schumann Apr 2025

Grapholinguistics In Graphic Design, Cameron Schumann

Student Research Symposium

Writing systems function as more than linguistic tools; they serve as powerful cultural and aesthetic symbols that influence branding, fashion, and multimedia design. Through an examination of typographic symbolism, foreign scripts evoke themes of mystery, exoticism, brutalism, constructivism, and authoritarianism, shaping consumer perception and artistic narratives.

Can Genai Evaluate Social Themes In Global Cinema? An Introductory Exploration Using French Ivory Coast Film To Evaluate Religious And Familial Social Themes, Andrew Hyde

Student Research Symposium

GenAI is rapidly evolving, making it crucial to investigate its uses and limitations. Popular films can shape social themes globally, yet many of these influences remain unexplored due to cultural barriers. This project's research has important applications, including:

  • Enhanced film analysis for less popular films in various countries and languages
  • Cultural preservation and lowered linguistic boundaries in film
  • Potential for future statistical analysis to determine correlation between social themes and popularity of films
  • Broader implications for the film industry and film studies

My hypothesis was that GenAI would be able to accurately analyze important social themes in niche French films.

The Roles And Challenges Of Child Language Brokering, Anaid Martinez Sánchez Apr 2025

The Roles And Challenges Of Child Language Brokering, Anaid Martinez Sánchez

Student Research Symposium

Child Language Brokering (CLB) refers to the informal act of interpreting and translating performed by bilingual children, often referred to as "child interpreting". This typically arises in response to cultural and linguistic divides, which can have varying effects on the individuals involved. CLB is especially common among immigrant Latino families, because the children adapt to the culture much faster.

Examining Cultural Competency In Audiologists Across The United States: A Pilot Survey, Olivia Montoya Apr 2025

Examining Cultural Competency In Audiologists Across The United States: A Pilot Survey, Olivia Montoya

Student Research Symposium

• Cultural competency refers to the ability of systems to provide care to patients with diverse values, beliefs, and behaviors, including tailoring delivery to meet patients' social, cultural, and linguistic needs (Betancourt, 2002).

• Limited studies to date have explored the implementation of cultural competence in audiology, which begs the question of how audiologists are fighting against—instead of contributing to—healthcare disparities among ethnic minorities.

Streamlining Field Note Analysis: Leveraging Gpt For Further Insights, Saríah López-Fierro, Umar Shehzad, Alireza (Sina) Zandi, Jody Clarke-Midura, Mimi Recker

Publications

As an integral part of qualitative research inquiry, field notes provide important data from researchers embedded in research sites. However, field notes can vary significantly, influenced by the researchers' immersion in the field, prior knowledge, beliefs, interests, and perspectives. As consequence, their interpretation presents significant challenges. This study offers a preliminary investigation into the potential of using large language models to assist researchers with the analysis and interpretation of field notes data. Our methodology consisted of two phases. First, a researcher deductively coded field notes of six classroom implementations of a novel elementary-level mathematics curriculum. In the second phase, we …

Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education Faculty Publications

This paper examined the interaction between narrative performance, language exposure, and standardized measures of morphosyntax and semantics, in bilingual children tested two times, 1 year apart. We aimed to 1) identify the factor structure of oral narrative measures, and 2) examine the direction and strength of the effects of (i) language exposure and (ii) the relationship between language domains and narrative production. A total of 143 Spanish (L1)-English (L2) bilingual children completed a battery of oral narrative and oral language proficiency assessments in Spanish and English at two time points (kindergarten and Grade 1). Factor analyses yielded an identical two-factor …

Journal of Indigenous Research

The growth of indigenous research methodologies and calls for data sovereignty are reshaping the discourse around evidence-based policymaking. This article summarizes the development and validation of the ‘Imi Pono Hawai‘i Wellbeing Survey, which examines wellbeing from indigenous, holistic, and strengths-based perspectives. The survey is anchored to a Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) model of wellbeing created through a community-participatory process involving diverse stakeholders. Early results show Native Hawaiians to be major contributors to Hawai‘i’s wellbeing, consistently reporting higher rates than non-Hawaiians for civic engagement, family relationships, and spirituality, as well as connections to culture, ‘āina, and community. This project informs strategic …

"It's Definitely New And Different...It's Really Engaging": Understanding The Power Of Storytelling Towards Secure Password Creation, Rizu Paudel, Mahdi Nasrullah Al-Ameen

Computer Science Student Research

There is a dearth in existing literature to attain systematic understanding of leveraging digital storytelling in security designs. As we begin to address this gap, we focused on user authentication where the existing password composition policies and password meters often fail to help users around creating a strong and memorable password. To this end, we conducted a lab study with 19 participants, where we updated our initial designs in an iterative manner based on their feedback. We then conducted a between-subject online study with 104 participants over Amazon Mechanical Turk to evaluate our designs. We found that all of our …

10. The Language Of Teaching Excellence: Describing Pedagogical Expertise Through A Framework Of Care, Beth Buyserie

Documenting Teaching Excellence

During my 20 years of college-level teaching, I have engaged in countless conversations where instructors communicate their passion for teaching, their commitment to student learning, the depth of their disciplinary expertise, their continued pedagogical innovations, and their thoughtful reflective practices. Yet often these same teachers confide that they find it quite challenging (sometimes nearly impossible) to write about their teaching for promotion—not because they are not strong teachers, but because the language expectations for documenting teaching accomplishments can be formidable. For example, at my particular institution, teaching-centered instructors are specifically directed in our role statements to “demonstrate excellence” in our …

Implementing Reading Mastery As A Component Of Tiered Literacy Instruction, Kristen R. Rolf, Peter Ehlen, Teresa Buttars

Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling Faculty Publications

Despite attempts at reform over the decades, many students with and without disabilities in the United States struggle to learn to read. Bear River Charter School is a K-6 public charter school in Utah that has effectively used Reading Mastery Signature Edition to teach most students to read at grade-level by the end of third grade. Data from the 2022-2023 school year show that over 80% of students in kindergarten, over 70% of students in Grades 1 and 2, and over 90% of students in Grade 3 met grade-level reading benchmarks by the end of the year. This chapter describes …

Finding a pragmatic process across university programs and disciplines that has the potential to strengthen programs and instruction has promise for adoption because of the possible impact and benefits. Jigsaw Lesson Study (JLS) has that potential and could be expanded into not only a teacher-education classroom but also into any discipline across a university campus. JLS offers opportunities for student engagement and professional development. Here, we used the JLS process, modified from Lesson Study (LS), to strengthen instructional decision-making, lesson planning, and student learning in a teacher-education course. We sought to …

God's Laborers: Missionary Work And Imperialism In The Congo From 1878-1908, Ana Peterson Dec 2024

God's Laborers: Missionary Work And Imperialism In The Congo From 1878-1908, Ana Peterson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

In 1878, Henry Craven opened the first Protestant mission in the Congo. The Livingstone Inland Mission created multiple stations along the Congo River to reach the interior. It stayed active for six years before transferring its stations to Swedish and American missions. Five years after its closure, a sister mission, the Congo Balolo Mission, resumed efforts to teach the people living in the interior. This thesis explores the evolving reaction of the missionaries to state violence. It argues that these missionaries initially supported imperial violence that enforced laws that aligned with their beliefs, such as removing the slave trade. Once …
